We tend to think of sleep as something that happens to us, but what if we started to think of sleep as a part of us? I believe that you can prepare for a night of sleep by asking for what you need instead of closing your eyes and just hoping for the best. This episode is my short and sweet rant about a recent idea. I hope it makes sense, and I hope it helps bring you closer to seeing sleep as an ally. Claim your 30-Day Aura Guest Pass and get access to my NEW and growing library of sleep meditat...
It's one year later, and what a year it's been! In this episode, I answer the question, "How are you, really ?" You'll find out where I've been, why I took so much time off, and how I approached sleep in a new way to get through it all. I also let you in on my current sleep projects and how you can work with me in my new insomnia membership at http://www.freedomfrominsomnia.com Hosted on Acast. I used to claim that I couldn’t take short naps, that I had to sleep for at least 40 minutes to feel good, and that’s no longer true. I can nap successfully for a few minutes. I can do the “power nap.” I get it now and I LOVE it. Nothing has changed in my body, I just changed my expectations. BUT I don’t want to discount those who legitimately can’t nap for whatever reason. This episode is for those who would like to practice the art of the power nap and are open to some fun and healthy experime...
I thought I would do something a little different for this episode. I love telling stories and every once in a while, I’ll be in the mood to tell a story in an Instagram caption. I’ll post a pretty picture of a bed or a plant and then use all the space I’m allowed and hope that my followers don’t get bored and stop reading before the last line. The stories are about me, and sometimes they’re remotely related to sleep, but mostly they’re stories I’ve remembered or felt compelled to share because ...
I want to take a step back from sleep topics this week and talk about what’s going on in my own life. How I’m handling grief and loss, and the valuable lessons I’ve learned about support - more specifically, how to show support for people you care about without writing and rewriting awkward text messages or baking pies for days that won’t be eaten. When you don't know what to say, or if your words will mean anything, or how you can help, know that it IS possible to offer support without having a...
I've recorded a meditation to help you fall asleep after the frustration of an unexpected wake-up. It is based on a few of the mindset concepts I covered in episode 81, Can You Manifest Better Sleep? The goal of this meditation is to help you create your own peaceful back-to-sleep practice, so I've kept it simple, but I've also made it super calm and cozy, as usual. This meditation has no intro or ads and can be played from start to finish as you relax in your bed. It starts with a 6-minute guid...
Can you manifest better sleep? Are positive thoughts alone enough to improve your sleep? I'll tell you what I think in this episode. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
If you love essential oils as much as I do, you are gonna LOVE this episode. I recently had a great conversation with Lauren Granville, an oil educator with doTERRA, and we talked about using oils to energize your mornings, ease anxiety during the day, what to diffuse in the evening before bed, and a lot more. I asked my Instagram followers to post their questions, and Lauren gave her best advice right back. This is seriously one of those episodes you will learn so much from that you should prob...
I recently had a call with Andi Campbell about sleep and self-care. Andi is a recreation therapist and mental health advocate. We met online and have connected over our many things in common. This episode has been barely edited and is rather long, but we had so much fun chatting about so many topics that I wanted to let you listen in. Andi was a great guest and shared a lot of great information about finding ways of practicing self-care that speak to you. She also shared a few of her pet peeves ...

Today’s episode is about making mornings a little less brutal. I cover sleep inertia - what it is and why you don't want it in your life, and the steps to ending your struggle with the dreaded snooze button. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Happy new year and happy start of season 4! This episode is about our recent move and how I turned a living room corner into a peaceful and inviting bedroom space. I might have also over-shared a little, as usual, but you should be used to that by now. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
I didn't feel like celebrating my 75th podcast episode the way I originally planned, so instead I got a little vulnerable and shared how my year has been going. Struggling? Me too. Let's take a step back together and learn to rest, not quit. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode, you’ll hear from four of my sleep expert friends on what you should do if you can’t fall asleep within a certain amount of time. Some say you should get out of bed and do something else, while others say you should stay in bed. In episode 73, I shared my opinion, and now it's time for the other experts to weigh in. Surprisingly, they all had a different answer. You'll hear from the following sleep experts: Tina Cufaro Website: https://www.tinacufaro.com Instagram: https://www.in...
This episode is about a topic that is a little controversial in the sleep world. Every sleep coach and sleep professional has a different view, and it’s interesting to me that we can all agree on so many things, like blue light and circadian rhythm, while also disagreeing on this one thing... Should you get out of bed if you can’t fall asleep? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In this episode, I chat with Derek Lacey, The Life Coach for Insomniacs . In this episode, I tell you the story behind my new book, The Calm & Cozy Book of Sleep . I talk about how it all started last spring, the unconventional way I got the book deal, the emotional email I received when the proposal was approved, and how I originally felt about the book title. I also talk about which section of the book is my favourite and how I ultimately busted through writer's block. After all that, I read you the introduction of the book then tell you how you can get addition...
You're gonna love this episode's guest! Dr. Dyan Haspel-Johnson chats with me about the art and science of self-hypnosis for better sleep. As someone who struggled with crippling insomnia and health problems for years, Dr. Dyan speaks from her own experience as well as her professional experience working with clients in her own practice. We talk about some of the myths and misconceptions of hypnosis, how we actually go into a state of hypnosis a few times a day without realizing it, and how to p...
The other day I was asked, "If I read your book, will it fix my sleep?" so this episode is about the frustrating questions I’m asked as a sleep coach, why it’s impossible to fix people’s sleep during a thirty-second conversation, and the advice I would give these people if they actually stayed in the conversation long enough to hear my answers. A reviewer made a comment about my book (after reading an advance digital copy) that I believe was meant to be critical and a little sarcastic. I’m okay with criticism because I understand that not everyone is gonna like me. I’m also okay with sarcasm because everything I say is dripping with it. The comment made me laugh at the time, but days later, I can’t let it go. There’s a part of me that agrees with what she said and I have to talk it out. This episode is a direct response to that negat...
The term chronotype is used to characterize your natural sleep-wake cycle and sleep patterns. It determines whether you’re a night owl or an early bird or something else. Your chronotype is based on your biology and genetic makeup, and it is said that because we’re born with it, it cannot be changed. I want to challenge the idea that you are stuck with the chronotype you have been born with if you feel it is no longer serving you. This episode goes deeper into what the four chronotypes are, and ...
This episode is about the bedtime stressors that plague us at night, and how to deal with them. Because I have struggled with many types of bedtime anxiety and racing thoughts, I have put together some "bedtime mantras" for you to repeat to yourself when you're lying in bed worrying about things you can and can't control. Here is that list, but listen to the episode to hear the story of the time I thought there was a murderer in the basement. 1: Tomorrow is taken care of, tonight I can rest. 2: ...

I went floating in a sensory deprivation tank and didn't freak out...but didn't have a life-changing epiphany either. This episode explores the benefits of floating, what it is, what it felt like, and how Jake and I felt after our recent one hour float session. (I'll give you a hint - one of us wants to go back and the other doesn't.) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This episode is the first of its kind on The CALM+COZY Podcast - An in-person interview recorded while on vacation in Abbotsford, British Columbia. Who can go from being a heavy sleeper her whole life to hearing her child tiptoe across her bedroom floor? A mom of two young girls, of course! My cousin, Laura, has an in-person chat with me about how her sleep has changed since pregnancy, and how being a mom of a two year old and a five year old changes everything, even a 30+ year sleep routine.
