Thought by Thought Healing - podcast cover

Thought by Thought Healing

Thought By Thought Healing is a podcast for those looking to overcome chronic pain & symptoms.

I am Jen Johnson, chronic pain coach, and this show is focused on discussing everything related to curing persistent symptoms with evidence-based techniques. I am a Christian and when I first discovered the mind-body syndrome - also referred to as TMS, neuroplastic pain, & neural circuit pain - I was struck by how the neuroscience of pain and the mind body connection align perfectly with scripture. I recovered from my own story of pain as I understood how our thoughts, beliefs, attitudes & emotions played out in the nervous system in ways I never knew was possible. On this show, I interview experts in the field & discuss the intersection of the gospel & mind-body medicine. I also openly share tools I used in my own healing journey, and still use today with my clients.

My hope is that you, too, will learn how to heal. Reversing chronic pain includes emotional, mental and spiritual healing. It truly changes your life; something you don’t want to miss out on. Thought by thought, you can find freedom. Welcome to the journey.

18 - being kind to yourself has an important role in recovery

Changing your inner dialogue and how you talk to and treat yourself. There were three areas that were really important for me to change my language towards myself. 1. How I treated and talked to my pain. Talk to your pain and listen to it. (frustrated with it, angry with it, try to get rid of it) 2. How I talk to and about myself as a person. The things I believed about myself needed to change. Value, intelligence, capability. Start treating yourself with the truth about what God says about us, ...

17 - why western medicine might not help w chronic pain

If your pain is caused by nervous system dysregulation (neural circuit pain/ tms/ mind body syndrome/ or neural circuit pain) the western medical system won’t be able to resolve your pain because it is set up for those with structural issues. When your pain is not resolved by traditional doctors and specialists, it is best to work with someone who understands the mind body connection and how that results in pain or other symptoms. Listen to this podcast for more details.

16 - how indecisions can be a map to healing

Indecision can throw a wrench in our nervous system. When we second-guess, fear, or doubt our ability to make good decisions it is often based in a fear that needs truth. The answer is not to push through and just start making decisions. In my discovery, it can be a tool. Pay attention to what decisions you struggle to make and use it as a guide/a map/ a compass to discover what areas of your life need freedom. You never know how God will heal you if you stop to analyze your indecisions.

15 - the fawn response and chronic pain

The Fawn Response is when we try to please the very people you fear. Instead of fighting or fleeing or freezing we adapt who we are to keep everyone happy or "comfortable". This is very costly to our nervous system because we have to ignore our emotions, needs and boundaries in order to keep others happy. As children, sometimes we don't have a choice. The only way to find safety is to placate our parents or caregivers. As adults we first need to ask if we are still in danger or if our body is re...

14 - interview with physical therapist, tim mchenry

Tim is a physical therapist who believes, as Howard Schubiner does, that 85% of pain is caused by neural-circuit pain. Tim works in Pennsylvania as physical therapists helping others to understand how to heal from pain that is caused by the brain even though it feels like it's originating in the body. I wanted my listeners to start hearing the perspective of others in the medical field who have discovered the power of the brain and the types of symptoms it can control.

13 - how to rewire your brain with the gospel and reverse chronic pain and anxiety

In this video I talk about how the brain is 95% hardwired by the time we are in our adult years, including our pain! But don't give up hope! Through neuroplasticity we can change how it's wired. If we don't choose to interrupt our own thoughts, emotions, behaviors and perceptions, we end up living a pre-programmed life that is based on our past experiences. In order to rewire our brain, we have to teach ourselves a new way of thinking by thinking beyond how we feel. We do not have to be controll...

12 - flip the script; instead of fighting it, come alongside your body

Today I focus on your relationship with your body. It can feel like your body is against you, and you can end up hating it. Before you know it, you are divided. Your mind and your thoughts seemingly in opposition with your body. It is important to realize that you and your body are physically one, and come alongside your body to support it, encourage it, and love it.

11 - we have to choose to heal

When we choose how we think and how we react to things, we slowly re-wire our brains. We get to choose patience, kindness self-control. This is incredibly empowering. When you realize you can control how your brain responds, this is ultimate freedom. One of the gifts God gives us is a sound-mind, but we have to choose it. We also get to choose our boundaries, and how much we allow others to effect our nervous systems. Since our nervous systems are responding as if we are in chronic danger, we al...

10 - listening to your pain meditation

Listening to your pain is a very important part of healing. God uses many ways to speak to us. Our pain is no different. Why is it there? What is the underlying emotion? What is reacting to? Shame, disappointment, anger, fear, another distressing emotion?

9 - we want the body and the brain to be on the same page

Interrupting the cyclical “fight or flight” pain response in the body includes naming it and feeling it. It’s not easy, it’s like breaking any habit. Name it: Calm, peace, confident, Joy. Feel it: What would that feel like in your body? Relaxed eyes? relaxed muscles, calm breathing, etc. Do it: Practice peace in your body by intentionally relaxing your muscles, breathing deep, etc. Deep Breathing can help us to give our brain’s a break from worrying about the past and future....

8 - shame has a nasty role in chronic pain

Shame is a fear response that isn’t based in truth. We know who we are in Christ. But when feel shame take over as our identity, it causes us to not be able to hear God’s voice clearly and causes us to ask the question “what if?” This causes us to live in perpetual fear that makes our brains on edge looking out for ways we are “wrong”. Our brains perceive this as danger and send a warning to our body that we are not safe. BOOM. Chronic Pain.

7 - people pleasing increases chronic pain

In healing, we start to peel back the layers of our pain to discover what is dysregulating our nervous system. When we people- please we get a hit of chemicals that make us feel good and acceptance. But the cost of this is high. Often times in order to keep others happy and pleased with us, we are suppressing our thoughts, opinions, beliefs and emotions. It causes our brains to be on high alert - looking for ways to avoid rejection. This hyper-vigilance causes the brain to be hyper-vigilant. Whe...

6- perfectionism is a layer to chronic pain

We are not perfect, in fact, and we are perfectly safe being flawed. When we operate out of the fact that we have to earn acceptance, love and safety by being perfect, it causes the nervous system to be hyper-vigilant and in a constant state of earning safety. The brain will constantly be looking for rejection and disapproval. This causes hyper-vigilance and pain. The truth is, we are made perfect through the cross and we can stop striving. HIs blood makes us perfect, and therefore we can be saf...

1 - how I healed through the mind body connection - tms

In this episode I discuss how important it is to understand the following four things. 1.pain is produced by the brain. 2. pain is a protector that the brain sends as a warning of danger to us. 3 The brain can produce pain when warning us of not only physical harm, but also of emotional harm. 4. The brain can become hyper-vigilant to feeling unsafe. The good news is that you can retrain this alarm and turn off the pain.
