Nine and nine weekend , my friends , five weeks away . Count them five . One hand , yay , you don't have to take off our shoes anymore , just on one hand .

Speaker 5

Crazy . I still like my shoes , but I'm okay with one hand , that's right .

Speaker 6

I like it too . That's good .

Speaker 11

We can hold our race fuel in one hand , yeah .

Speaker 6

Count down the weeks . In . The other Five weeks from today is expo day , gosh , yeah , it's like the first day back at school . You see all your friends . You haven't seen all summer . Yeah , we're looking forward to seeing you , my friend , I promise it'll be . I'll have my rise and run shirt on . Back to the schedule . Nine and nine .

Five weeks away , 35 days . Your long run this weekend on the wine and drying training schedule this is week 13 . It's four miles . It's a down week . You got the big one last week , big one next week . Marathon weekend now is less than 100 days away .

In fact , at the time that you're listening to this podcast , if you listen to it on the Thursday , that it drops 97 days until the 5K . 14 weeks until the 5K . If you're running one of the challenges on marathon weekend . You got to double up this week . 14, .

You've got five and a half miles walk or at the very least , at a really , really , really easy pace . Again , I would encourage you to walk those . Your long run is 15 miles this week , 97 days to go . Yeah , we've talked about it before . We'll talk about it a little bit more here in just a minute .

This is the tough part of the training Disneyland and we're going to talk Disneyland here in this episode . 15 weeks away , the week after marathon weekend 105 days , the long run , disneyland this weekend still three miles . We're just on week three of that training program . Apologies and alibis .

We don't do this every week , but Greg would like to apologize this week .

Speaker 3

As the editor of the Rise and Run podcast , I want to apologize to our wonderful community . In a day and age of where , if you're like Ricky Bobby , if you're not first , you're last , kind of situation , I made a grave editorial mistake . The bear that we featured in last week's episode was actually not the bear that was in the last one .

Speaker 6

Yes , that's clearly what you told me .

Speaker 3

Well , that's the thing . The bear that we talked to had a very , very deep voice . Then , upon news reports coming of the outlets in the greater Orlando area , is that the bear was actually female .

So my guess is either there were two bears in the magic kingdom and we just talked to the wrong one or someone was trying to you know in being an imposter and we just grabbed the wrong one . So from an editorial side of things , I apologize , because we only strive for the absolute , straight facts .

So next time a wild animal is loose in the magic kingdom and we get them for an interview , I will make sure to confirm that that is the actual animal that we feature . So again , for the bottom of my heart , deep apologies .

Speaker 5

Yeah , have rude , greg Good job Greg I know .

Speaker 6

All right , so the next time we have a bear , we'll keep that in mind , greg , thank you . Thank you for setting the record straight . We appreciate it . Hey , we started out . We started talking about the training miles for this week . How they're getting long , they're getting tough as gosh guys .

I mentioned this before my friends In my opinion , these next couple of weeks now through oh golly the middle of December , the end of November maybe the tough part of the training How's the training going ? Any lessons , lexi , you want to kick us off ?

Speaker 7

Sure , my training has been interesting , to say the least , because during the month of August I was going to orange theory four times a week , so I was using that as my endurance and my long runs and I didn't really do any strictly distance , I mostly focused on the speed and the exercises that they had me doing there .

And then I got a puppy , so I haven't been able to leave the house except whenever my boyfriend's home . So it's been an interesting few weeks of September and I have at least gotten about three miles a day just with walking the puppy outside . So that's been interesting .

And then I did my first long run in too many months , to say out loud on Friday and it went really well . I was a little slower than I had anticipated , but it was also like 78 degrees outside by the time that I was in the last couple of miles . So I did my little Galloway calculation of my average pace there , but overall I felt fine .

Afterwards I was a little stiff the day after , but other than that I'm planning on going back to it this weekend so I can be ready for wine . And I think my goal has kind of changed a little bit , because you know , as life happens , your goals have to adapt to what's going on .

And I think for wine and I'm just going easy peasy , just beating the balloon ladies , and then I'll condition my body better for marathon weekend and Disneyland so that I can actually go for time and , you know , really enjoy those kind of phrases .

Speaker 6

I mean , that's the beauty of Disney runs , I think is that's what we're there for is to have a good time . Don't really care about the finish time , what the chip time says , just care that I finish .

Speaker 7

Right , and I think it's been really interesting too , as I've gotten back into exercising consistently and running longer runs . That , as opposed to my end of dopey training . I'm really enjoying it , and I was out there on Friday of this past week and I was like you know what , I'm having fun , I like this , and I haven't felt that in a really long time .

Speaker 6

So that's important . That's really is so good . That's good Lexi .

Speaker 11

My training has also been a little bit I think disjointed is probably the best word to Lexi Like it's been . I've been doing some fitness training . I've been doing some I'm sorry endurance training . I've been doing some weightlifting . I've been doing a lot of skating , but my running has sort of been a little off .

Like I've been doing , I've been missing a lot of my short runs . I've been doing most of my long runs . I've been walking a lot of my runs and so it's been sort of like this training . That's been very different than what I've done in the past and I I know that I've had to change my goals a few times .

I know that the ultra that I was going to run in October is now turned into a training run . So I'm going to run not the ultra distance , but I'm going to use it as a cater training run and just things have sort of evolved for me .

I'm a little nervous because I'm used to doing I'm one of those people that's like check off every box and do every single run and try not to miss any . So this is going to be a little bit of a I don't know a test of my patients to see if I can actually get back on track or be okay with it being a little different and change my goals .

So we'll kind of see how it goes from here . I know I do have , I do have plans to do both of my short runs this week and I have , you know , my long run this weekend that I'm looking forward to doing .

But we'll see every , everything , life happens and I think it's an important thing for people to remember , I also got a new pet and they do take a lot of work when you get them and just life happens . So I think if you just keep moving the needle to the , to the direction that it's supposed to be going , that's all you can really hope for .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I agree , ali . Friends , I'm looking here . I had 14 miles this weekend longest on my training schedule in quite some time . I want to stress something we've talked about in the past . Let's emphasize it a little more right now . I think this is where the training gets really tough . We've got 15 miles this weekend . You'll probably have in two weeks 17, .

It's going to get to 20 soon . The long runs are very important , but there's something in in reading about running and training . I read this all the time and a lot of us don't do it right , and that is most amateurs , most folks like us , most middle of the packers , back of the packers .

We don't go fast enough on our hard days and we don't go slow enough on our slow days and 80% of our training should be at a slow pace . 80-20 is a recognized ratio for for easy to hard . What am I saying On your long runs ? Coach Twiggs is fond of telling us you can't go too slow on your long run .

Same with Jeff Galloway would say the exact same thing . It's okay to walk the greater part of your long runs . What you're doing is is you're you're in the aerobic training environment and you're burning fat at these slower speeds . You're learning to use fat for your fuel at these slower speeds .

It's something that I don't feel qualified to talk about , but would encourage you to look up . Why do I run slow ? Why do I train slow to run fast ? And you'll find a lot of information on that , so go easy on that .

The other thing I learned remember a couple of weeks ago I did 12 miles , I think it was , and it was a disaster because I decided , hey , I'm too tough to need to carry hydration or fuel with me . That was dumb . So I have this nice hydration vest now , took it with me , took some fuel with me . That helped quite a bit , but I I did .

I took it really easily and times are all relative . I can post times and people will say , well , that's not slow . Another people will say , my goodness , you must have been dragging an anchor with you , but it's all relative for you . You need to go easy on the long runs . It will work . I promise it worked for you .

Speaker 5

Yeah , it's been a few weeks since I've been back on , so I ran my first race of the season .

Speaker 6

Yeah , it's a couple , two , three weeks ago , right .

Speaker 5

Two weeks ago I ran the River Run Half Marathon in Burria , ohio . Yeah yeah , and I was . I was trying to do it for a PR , an Attyne race for Disney , unfortunately , like okay . So the race halfway through was I was pretty on target for at least getting a like a 156 or something like that .

My goal was to just get under two hours regardless , but I really wanted to get like a under an hour . 53 would have been really nice , but I didn't make the time . I still made a sub two . I just the second half of the race . I got so into my head about how I was doing it . I don't know . It was weird . I got into my head and it slowed me down .

But I still had a lot of fun , because one of the best things about that race was my sister got to see me run for the first time .

Speaker 6

Oh , I saw the photos .

Speaker 5

Yeah , and she surprised me . I'd even know she was going to come and cheer and she had a sign and everything and I'm like you know what ? That's why I did that race , because it was so much fun being able to see my sister out on the course cheering for me . I'm forever grateful .

Also , I do want to point this out for anybody that's running the Disneyland races . So Disney World proof of time is due , was due on the 26th , one for one and dying .

Speaker 6

No marathon , marathon , that's right yeah .

Speaker 5

So if you didn't submit a proof of time , it would just go off of whatever you put regardless . But if you are trying to submit a proof of time for the Disney land races I believe correct me if I'm wrong , you guys , but I believe it's like October 3rd or something like that . It was like only like a week after the marathon week in proof of time .

So you still have a week to go ahead and submit those times if you have them or like to do a race , to put one in . You still have time for that . But just as a reminder , if you were thinking about doing it or you have a time , you just keep forgetting to put it in . Now is the time .

Speaker 6

Yeah , yeah , that's a good point . A couple of things you said . See , times are all relative . Sub 2 for Jack wasn't quite what she wanted . Sub 2 for me haven't done one of those in 25 years . And Jack was racing , not training .

Speaker 5

It was like . Let me also say like it was a wonderful race . I recommend if anybody ever has a chance to run it . It was beautiful , it was great . I just got into my head a little bit and yeah .

Speaker 6

Yeah , hey , this is not easy , this is not easy .

Speaker 5

Well , going from running ultras and training on the trails and then trying to go back for a speed on the road when you ultra you run slower than you would , technically speaking , on the road for like half marathons and marathons . So trying to get back my speed that I once had is hard .

Speaker 6

No , yeah , you're doing great , though , thank you All right , I appreciate it . So , friends , it's over and over again the training , the training , the training . It's the important part . The race is the reward . That marathon is not 26 miles , is probably about 500 . It just ends with a 26 mile reward at the end after all that training .

Hey , we mentioned on several occasions that Disneyland races are now just 15 weeks away . Let's talk Disneyland a little bit .

Speaker 7

So we are so excited to have two returning guests to the interview . This time , as we talk about Disneyland , we have Kristen B from the run princess family who oh gosh when , what episode . You were on one of the beginning episodes Early beginning because it was like we were talking about COVID .

Yeah , so you know , if you want to listen to that one , we'll put it in the show notes which episode it was . And we also have our good friend Kristen W , also known as Run Fit Mama , on Instagram . Hi , guys , Happy to be here and we are just going to jump right in to talking about Disneyland races .

Now , I know at the time of this recording we do not have an event guide . We don't have very much guidance at all as to what the races are going to be like . But I know , kristen W , you have run at Disneyland before . Yes , and you have done a couple of the weekends , yes .

Speaker 2

I want to say I've done four Disneyland , half three Tinkerbell and one Avengers . I think that's funny .

Speaker 5

I'm so jealous . Oh my God , that had to be epic Of the Avengers one Heck .

Speaker 2

yeah , well , that particular race weekend was extremely windy , and that's when the porta potty fell over . So , oh my God , that's Lexi's worst video .

Speaker 3

I would say that is Lexi's nightmare .

Speaker 2

So I don't know about that one .

Speaker 11

but and Alicia , you've also run . Some run Disney in California , right .

Speaker 1

I have . I did one of the Star Wars , and then I did Tinkerbell as well .

Speaker 7

Awesome . So we are just going to go off past knowledge and , again , as a disclaimer , this is subject to change based on what we hear over the next couple months . But let's start off with the race weekend that happened in January .

Cool , so this is going to be the race weekend in Disneyland back the last time that they ran it , which would have been in 2018 . So what was the race theme ? What parks did they go through ? Like ? Kind of give us a brief overview of what that looked like in comparison to , like , the themes that we have for this coming race weekend .

Speaker 2

So January used to be well long ago , used to be Tinkerbell , but when it , when Ren Disney , disneyland was no longer , it was Star Wars , the light side race , and that was always the weekend after Marathon weekend and I think I don't have the Star Wars like map or information . I've never done the Star Wars race , but I believe it just went .

All of the races were kind of the same . They would start in California Adventure , you would weave through Disneyland and then out through Anaheim , but I believe I don't know if you guys remember I think didn't they cancel it like two months prior , I think , when they ? Finally , does anyone remember this ?

Speaker 3

I don't remember the exact timing . I do remember watching a Res Runs video and him making comments about like when are they gonna tell us about , you know , disneyland races and stuff like that ? So yeah , I have a slight memory of that .

Speaker 2

I think it was when they weren't asking for proof of time , people were getting a little suspicious . And then Twitter , I think . Finally they've tweeted something and everyone's like yeah , we've already canceled our flights . We already kind of assumed .

Speaker 5

So , with you and Alicia having run the Disney races out in California , how long are you in theory in the actual parks ? Cause I mean I tried to watch videos on YouTube but there wasn't too much to kind of see , there weren't that many videos to see about those races . So how long are you actually in the parks ? For ?

Cause it made it seem like with the videos that the 5K and 10K you kind of stay in the parks quite a bit , if not all of it , Whereas the half marathon you may not be in it for really that long at all .

Speaker 2

So okay , so I'm a dork and I still have my maps . But the 5K , at least for Tinkerbell . You started at the castle , which is something I feel that we need to bring back . That needs to happen at some point . So Tinkerbell like flew and they did fireworks , so that was like , yeah , it was pretty awesome .

It started the castle and you go through Tune Town and back around the street and then you go through California Adventure and it ends at the parking lot at the Disneyland Hotel . And same thing with the 10K . You start outside kind of by the finishing area and then you still do miles one , two and three are in Disneyland .

Then you kind of weave in and out and you go back to California Adventure for four and five and then six . You're finishing in downtown Disney . So that one is . I always thought the 10K was the most fun because you got pretty much the most part time . Yeah , I just thought it was really fun .

And then the half you start in the same spot , kind of by the finishing area . You go like kind of up and around the freeway and then mile two is . It looks like , I think , the castle .

They don't really have any of the monuments on here , but you get mile two , three , five and then by six you're out like in neighborhoods and then you don't come back until mile 13 . So you pretty much make it out to Angel Stadium and then you come back .

Speaker 5

So you would say it's what about four , five miles in the parks ?

Speaker 2

Yeah , like I remember very distinctly seeing like mile six when you're sorted in the Disneyland Hotel parking lot , kind of running away from Disneyland .

Speaker 3

Kristen , quick follow up to that . So obviously we know , running at Disney World and as we've you know , as you've recollected and you know as a given that you know when you're running on Disneyland property there are characters , you know that you get in the lines of one , you have that Disney entertainment Can you talk about ?

Is there any entertainment once you get onto the roads of Anaheim ? I mean , obviously I know that's , you know it's not being controlled by , you know city of Anaheim police and everything like that . So you know , can you talk about the differences there ?

Speaker 2

So it is very different in that way , but I will say you will not be disappointed , because there's a lot of car clubs , high school bands , cosplay , like especially for Avengers . They had a lot of people dressed up like Avengers out on the street , but the best thing they always had , and I really hope this comes back .

I think it was like mile nine , but you know the Red Hat Ladies Society . Yes , okay , so they had that . They were aligning all of mile nine and they were just out there and cheering and they had their little clappers and I'm telling you like there was not a dry eye around you . So it's not boring by any means , like they definitely do a good job .

And then in Angel Stadium they had all of the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts kind of like in the stands and cheering us on , so that was really fun too .

Speaker 1

And the year that I did it we actually didn't go through the stadium .

There was plenty to look at through the streets of Anaheim and it was such a different experience than Disney World was that it kept your interest the whole time and just looking at the buildings and , like Kristen said , having the Red Hat Ladies be there was a really big highlight in the band . It was really cool .

Speaker 5

What would you say would be like the biggest differences between the races at Disney World and the races at Disneyland , the entire ?

Speaker 2

production of getting ready for a race is way different at Land vs World because you're up three hours before you got to get on a bus or you got to drive . So I won't say that you don't necessarily have to wake up super early , but the walking time you know that mile walk from the staging to the start . That's not really there .

So you just pretty much have to walk through downtown Disney , get to the Disneyland parking lot area or Disneyland hotel , sorry , parking lot area . So it's in a way way more laid back . It feels a lot smaller , even though you know there's a ton of people at this event .

Speaker 4

And I think also too with like the hotels and stuff like you hear of , kind of like hotel road type , everything is within like a mile within it . So like you will have shuttles in the morning but you are very . It is so easy to walk .

And when we talk about or when Kristen talks about not me because I've never done it but I like live there right , like staying in like either the Disneyland hotel , the Grand Californian or Pixar Pier , which is now like a different hotel , but staying in those like you are right within downtown Disney .

So it was like you wake up , you stumble out of your hotel and you were there . So if it were to start like in like that parking lot or in downtown Disney , it's like so close so you get like definitely a little bit extra shut eye , I'm assuming , I'm hoping .

Speaker 1

I've actually done it both ways .

So when I did the light side race I was off property at a , I think a Hyatt and I took a little shuttle bus that they had and hopefully , if the start and things are the same way , they offered this , they offered free passes for the bus , and then I also stayed on property at one of the Disneyland resorts , which then it is in walking distance .

So there's a little bit of difference in those , but it is really just walking from one end of the property through that downtown Disney area to the start .

Speaker 3

So so it can be just to expand upon this part of the conversation a little bit . One of the phrases that's synonymous with Disneyland in terms of hotel accommodations , everything like that , is good neighbor hotels . I know we have them here in Disney world but it's much more of a bigger thing in Disneyland .

Can you just give us a real brief overview of what a good neighbor hotel is and it's proximity to the parks ?

Speaker 4

Yeah , like they're very , very good hotels that are literally within anywhere between like 0.10 and like maybe a mile , I mean , and they're all within anywhere between $150 to $500 , depending . And then if you have a roommate , I , my girlfriend and I or I bring like a few friends , we'll go up and we'll stay at hotels , just so we can like .

You know , I only live an hour away , but sometimes it's just so nice to be able to spend the night there . I went to Ogie Boogie the opening night in September and we literally stayed across the street of like the entrance of both parks it was . You walked across the street and that was it . It was like 0.10 , I think , and we got it for like $150 .

And then you split it however many ways , but you can easily fit like between two to four girls . I mean , at that point you probably don't want to fit four girls unless you like totally love them .

But you know , with costumes and like everyone taking like six pairs of shoes and stuff , like there's , it's nice and there's like a whole bunch of food there and stuff , but it's downtown . Disney is so much smaller and but within walking distance , which is great .

Speaker 7

And just for the people who may have not ever been out to Disneyland , is the Disneyland area kind of how Disney World is like ? Once you're on property , then you're . You're on property . It's like a whole different world . And is there any like safety concerns , like certain roads that you shouldn't go past or , you know , getting a sketchy part of town ?

I'm just trying to think of like someone who might be going for their first time and not know anything about the Disneyland area .

Speaker 4

I think it's like a super safe area . I mean I think maybe Kristen can expand on that a little bit I stay within like the kind of like the mile hub or whatever . Oregon I just like drive home .

So it's not like huge weekends that I'll stay for like a whole weekend , but everybody there , so like , for example , for Oogie Boogie , when we were walking back it was like well past midnight but literally everybody was walking back with us into the hotels and that's what it'll be for Run Disney , it'll all be Run Disney for those hotels .

So like you don't necessarily have like if you want to stay within the Disney bubble , which is smaller than like the regular , the Disneyland , the grand and then the Paradise Pier , that's like really fun Disney bubble , but you don't have to and it is like a fraction of the cost to stay at something that is almost you'll have a bigger room , almost guaranteed .

Like 90% of the time you'll have a bigger room and then it's just as close , like you're not stumbling out . Maybe you have to walk like five or 10 minutes , but not nearly as far as you would have to get off the bus to go to the start of the race . It's not that far for like an example of that , but definitely safe .

Speaker 2

Just like Kristen said , you know , when the park closes at midnight , everyone is still walking to their hotels . It's almost like it's almost like being outside in Vegas , Like everyone's awake , it's very busy but you don't feel unsafe and we normally stay on Harbor , which is it's a walk across the crosswalk from Disneyland , so it's very close .

We've never had an issue . We do take a car , so we've gone to the Target and done pickups and Walgreens and things like that and we've never had any scary moments or anything like that . We've been walking home at like 1230 . So everything's very close , Everyone's awake . You feel pretty safe , I think .

Speaker 5

Especially since you guys have stayed at good neighbor hotels or stayed nearby . You say the walking distance is pretty close . I've been to Disney a few times . I guess I just never looked to ask the hotels Is there actual transportation that hotels offer to bring you to the front , or how does that work ?

Speaker 2

Okay , so in December I stayed . I have to keep looking at my map for the life of me . If you kidnapped me and said what are the streets and where , like that surround Disneyland , I would confuse them all .

Speaker 4

I have my map up to give you an actual like name , cause I'm like I just know how to get there , like you don't know names .

Speaker 2

When you said Kattella , I was like , oh , that's right , that's right , okay so like , if you see , I know that the audience can't see , but there's Kattella right and it's behind DCA . I can see the roller coasters , I can see like Tower of Terror , but it is a pretty like . It does take a while to walk there . By a while I mean like 15 minutes .

They even offer a shuttle , so they're pretty accommodating with , like getting you to the little front area where the Ubers can like drop off and pick up . It's pretty easy .

Speaker 5

Even on race weekends .

Speaker 2

That I don't know that . I've just walked across a straight half a week . Alicia , I don't know if you drove to any of the races that land , but I did that a few times and actually it wasn't too terrible either . So parking wasn't bad . But again , I don't know how it would be this time .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I did not drive . But as for the bus services and I don't know the answer to question Jack if they would have it during race weekends , the hotel that I stayed at they have .

So the way that Disneyland is set up is Disneyland and California Adventure if you've never been there are literally like right across from each other , with like a little pathway in between , and right in that same area there is a bus circle almost , and so there's city buses and little buses that just go in the neighborhoods , and then that's also where the Ubers

and the Good Neighbor Hotels drop off as well .

Speaker 4

Yeah , and then that's gonna be on .

I think that's Harbor , yeah , south Harbor Boulevard , like , if you're looking because that's what I was gonna say too it's literally 91 feet , depending upon if people because I just like in the rain , if there's people , it's like almost accurate of like 91 feet between gates , so like you don't have to get on a ferry , you don't have to go drive a car , you

don't have to do any of these things . It is literally right in front of you . And then if you go to Harbor , south Harbor Boulevard , it has all of those bus stations , the taxis , the Ubers , everything like that . And I was also gonna say too , there's the convention .

The Anaheim Convention Center is smack dab behind , like Disneyland and California Adventure , so it's like there's just people everywhere . And then , like that's , there's like a hotel , restaurants , like everywhere too , that they recently more or less built , that looks like really , really nice and stuff . So it's there's people everywhere , all with them walking distance .

Speaker 7

So , since you guys have obviously been to Disneyland a lot , is there one particular good neighbor hotel that you like the best , or like what's the favorite ? One is like oh , if you can stay at this one , that's probably you're gonna be your best bet .

Speaker 2

So I see that the candy cane in , and that is I mean pretty much like in right next to Tower of Terror . That was pretty good . I've stayed at the best Western , that's on Harbor across . There's like three best Westerns , but this one is by the McDonald's , if that means anything to anyone .

Speaker 9

That one .

Speaker 2

This best Western Fun fact that Denny's is open 24 hours , so if you need anything after the park , that's a good place to go . This time , though , we're staying at Howard Johnson , which I know has really great reviews too . I don't know , kristin , if you've stayed there , but I'm excited to try that one out .

Speaker 4

I normally stay at either the Hilton at the convention center , which I really , really , really love , but there's only six elevators , so if you're like that's the problem for you standing there , I've stayed at like a few .

So I did the D23 convention last summer and we stayed and I always because I always try to like stay somewhere new , to kind of like see like , oh , would this be like a really fun place . We had like a mini apartment . There was like two beds , we had a whole like , we had a kitchen , we had a living room .

We had and it was just me and my girlfriend and it was fantastic and it was so cheap and I was like we are staying here again . And then we forgot what it was called . There's another one above CVS and for like the same cost you get like a living room . And so that's like a lot of times you can get like these big like rooms .

The grand in Disneyland are made by the same company , and then the Paradise Pier whatever the hotel is , because it's now it's changing again that's made by a different one .

So those rooms are a little bit bigger than , like , the people who made the Disneyland and the grand , and then you take those small rooms and then you like multiply it and they're just so much bigger .

So if you are somebody who maybe does , you're looking for like maybe cost effective , you wanna stay close and you want the room like to be able to bring all of your costumes and stuff , Cause , like most people are not gonna come here for two or three , four days .

You know Like you can go to Walt Disney World and go from like Friday to Monday , tackle your runs and then just leave right , but I feel like , because Disneyland is it's back , finally , you're gonna wanna stay a lot longer .

So you're gonna need a lot more clothes , You're gonna need a lot more room , and having a kitchen really does help because , like there's tons of grocery stores I think there's . I don't remember where the target is , but there's a target that's like super close . I'm like , look at you , Kristen . I'm like where is it ? I'm sorry .

Speaker 2

So it's down down Harpermore it's right here .

Speaker 4

Okay , thank you . Thank you for everybody to sell that too . That's where it is , guys , don't forget okay .

Speaker 2

There's also Panera that's across the street . That's open very late , so that's always a good option too .

Speaker 4

And the Denny's which does taste fabulous at midnight .

Speaker 2

It does . Yes , Salad with some ranch dressing , yeah .

Speaker 4

Girl , you wanna go to Denny's right now ? You should so .

Speaker 11

It sounds like the good neighbor hotels are cost effective , costume effective and also close to the Denny's , which is all very important . And I believe , if I'm not mistaken , one of our sponsors , magic Bound Travel if you like a travel agent , I believe they have access to those hotels as well .

So if you're looking for something that you need a little bit more space that's kind of where I'm at always and a little bit less expensive , although I'd love to stay at the California hotel or any of those Disneyland hotels . Sometimes it doesn't always work with the budget that you have in your pocket for a run Disney . So this is all brand new information .

I honestly thought you had to stay at those hotels to go to Disneyland . I've never been to Disneyland , so this is really helpful information .

Speaker 2

Yeah , I will say all of Catella and Harbor . Pretty much they are just lines of hotels , again like Vegas , but with like churros .

Speaker 5

So it's pretty much like in I love some churros man . You got me so old .

Speaker 4

Wait , can we have a shirt that says like Vegas with churros Like ?

Speaker 10

I'm actually .

Speaker 4

I need a shirt that says like that would be super swell , thanks .

Speaker 2

I mean honestly , I would go if there was some sort of Vegas that just offered you churros . I mean yes , please . But yeah , it's like so if it's a square , there's one L that's more residential , but the other L it's just full of hotels . So you have a lot of options .

Speaker 4

And also , too , it's like the hotels that , like you're used to seeing . Well , I don't . I think so . Now I'm like thinking about it . I'm like wait a second , we're still in California , that's not Florida .

Like the Marriott , the Hilton , the , you know , like best , best Western , like they have like the generic hotels , but always look at reviews and like look and see what the room looks like . Like you are coming here to run . Like you need to make sure that , like you were sleeping right , that you have room for , like extra water bottles .

If you need extra food , does it have the epic in a fridge for you and your friends ?

Like you need to look at like certain things like that , and then , because they are pretty much all roughly around the same price , like go with what you feel works best for you , Cause there are a lot of options , but like don't get over one with it either , though , because they are just you know , if you need help , reach out to one of you guys .

Speaker 7

Okay , so switching gears just a little bit . Let's talk about the expo . So what ? Where has it been in the past , or is it ? How is it compared to the Disney World Expos ?

Speaker 2

Like everything with Disneyland , it's a little smaller and a little cuter in my opinion , but I still felt like looking back . it was definitely still insane to get there at a certain time but there was no club run Disney , so that was like every man for himself .

I remember like white knuckling through the grapevine at like 8 AM being like I have to get there right now . But where it is is in the Disneyland hotel . They have their parking lot and like not convention center but meeting area , ballroom type things , and so that's underground .

You're going to go down like into the parking lot underground and get your bib and then you'll walk up to more of those like ballrooms and that's where everything is set up . And they had you know , they have pretty much everything you have at world , just a little bit smaller .

But they definitely had like Jeff Galloway was there and they had speakers and things like that and all the merch you forgot .

Speaker 8

Like you know , we all know what the Disney World Expos look like . They have a . You can get almost anything you need that you forgot at home . Were those necessities kind of there like you're fueling sneakers , anything .

Speaker 2

Okay , so I love that you said sneakers . I'll come back to that in two seconds , but yes , so I remember very specifically getting fuel , getting my Rothreds tank tops . I wanted to stock up on Pretty much anything I needed was there , but also New Balance used to be there and they used to do race weekend specific shoes and you would have Tinkerbell like they .

What Tinkerbell ? Yeah , you should Google them . Like they had an aerial one .

Speaker 1

They had Mickey Mouse , Goofy , they were so great , they had a Haunted Mansion one . Yes , yeah , they have a Mickey Mouse one . I don't get it .

Speaker 2

I just wanted to tell you that and again , this could change , but the expo did open on the Thursday of that race weekend at 10 am and was open till 8 pm .

Speaker 8

Was there like the run Disney merch , like we see now .

Speaker 2

No , I would say , okay , you know the room where we all have to wait in the queue to get in and the whole thing . It's probably like a quarter of that size . But I also feel like the room they use now is a gigantic stadium type room , so it was smaller , but I don't think I ever remember thinking like that's it .

So I think they had a lot back then .

Speaker 11

So you mentioned the day that it opened and the times it was , and I know that this is gonna change because we haven't seen the event guide for this year . But it's very difficult for people to think about booking their travel when they don't know when they need to arrive by .

So I'm curious is it the same as our run Disney's in Orlando , where you have kind of like shortened on the last day and it's open till ?

Speaker 2

ours is open till seven , I believe the first two days , but yeah , 12 to eight on Friday and then 10 to five on Saturday , which are kind of . These are all very confusing hours . They should all be the same .

Speaker 11

Yeah , yeah , yeah but it does make sense because then when you're on that last day , that's usually just the half , that just the half , as we always say . That's picking up their bids and stuff like that . But I imagine it might be a little bit different , so don't plan on based on this is a couple years ago or a few years ago now .

Speaker 2

So I found something that might be really helpful . A back to the hotel and transportation question . I don't know if you guys can see this long list . These are all the hotels that provide race as an event transportation , so I'm assuming that I mean this is a list of probably what like 30 hotels , maybe .

Speaker 11

Yeah , more than that .

Speaker 2

So I'm assuming that they would try to still do the same , so that's hopeful .

Speaker 4

Can I just say that I'm like super excited with you holding that thing up like every single time .

Speaker 11

I'm like show us more , show us what .

Speaker 4

I look so excited , tell me more .

Speaker 2

I just want to say it's so sad , get it together . I'm trying to see if there's any like they have a whole thing about spectator viewing .

Speaker 5

I hope they have that pamphlet again because it looks honestly super , extremely helpful , especially with the races not having been going on for the past how many years now ? I don't know five or something , but it would be so nice to have be like welcome back . Here's everything you need to know , all at one spot .

Speaker 2

OK , this is very helpful . Again , I'll post this so I know this isn't helpful for people listening , but they have a whole page . It's totally helpful for us though they have a whole page on what mile to be and what time if you want to spectate .

Speaker 4

Do you see that that's so friendly ?

Speaker 5

It's so amazing .

Speaker 10

They didn't like this again .

Speaker 4

Crazy . I cheered for the first time for Marathon Week in this past year and it was like I'm not going to say it was . It was wilds running to and from everywhere with alcohol in your hands because you want to like pass out beer to everyone and you're drinking the beer , so it's like you're just a mess , so that's really nice .

Speaker 2

Look how cute this is . They have a whole page of Jeff Galloway tips and they have a little poem at the bottom for training and Greg , where were we when Kristen was handing out the beer ?

Speaker 8

Yeah , I don't know , I was mile 25 to where I was .

Speaker 4

I remember , specifically because we had a Buffalo Bills . My friend Colleen and I had Buffalo Bills flag and people were buying us beer to pass out beer and it was literally the best experience ever . If you ever get to cheer for a marathon , do it , but only do it at Disney , because Disney is fun .

Speaker 3

Well , john , what we need to do is we need to hop in our Mandalorians , go back in time and then find Kristen on mile 25 , and then we can cheer , we do it , I'll do it , we go .

Speaker 4

It looks like half-drinking , but I will give you a beer .

Speaker 3

But speaking of traveling , though , one of the logistical things is we need to get to the race weekend so that we can experience all of this . A major difference between running at Disney World and Disneyland is that when we come to world , we all fly into one airport .

Ok , maybe two if you count Sanford , when in California as I just learned , because I literally just got back from LA today is the greater Los Angeles area , has LAX or Los Angeles , the big main airport , Then you have smaller airports at John Wayne and then you also have Long Beach .

So , ladies , in terms of I mean , obviously I know it's dependent on where you live and what airlines fly into those airports what recommendations can you give to our listeners of what is the best airport to travel to , if you do have to fly to this event ?

Speaker 4

For me . I normally travel just through LAX , just because it's easy . It's a straight shop for me to get to Walt Disney World , but the smaller ones are nicer . But I think coming east to west is a little bit more expensive from what I've been told from people , and so I think more for your bang for your buck , direct flight LAX is a little bit easier .

John Wayne is closer , it's like 20 minutes , but LAX is only like 30 or 40 minutes just depending upon the traffic and stuff , because it's just always busy because it's our biggest international airport .

Speaker 3

I was going to say my hotel that I just stay . That was only 11 miles from the airport . It took me 55 minutes to get to LAX this morning . It was insane .

Speaker 4

Wow , yeah , it's time consuming , but the other ones are just as great and they're definitely easier to get to and from . But it will be more expensive . But you can with less traffic and stuff , because sometimes I'll fly out of Ontario if I can get a cheaper flight in .

Ontario is so much closer to me and John Wayne is just as amazing in Long Beach , I mean you can even fly into San Diego , take a day in San Diego and then rent a car up or Uber car up or whatever , because San Diego is gorgeous .

It'll be freaking colder than whatever in January , but it's beautiful and by cold I mean it's not snow but cold for California .

Speaker 6

Well , that leads to a question , and we get this all the time what's the weather going to be like on race day ?

Speaker 4

We don't know California's better what it's like Florida , so it's cooler .

Speaker 2

Wait , we're not going to have the humidity .

Speaker 6

You're supposed to know this .

Speaker 2

So people , I feel like Kristin , I feel like people keep asking that on Facebook and like here's the answer . It could be really cold , but it's not going to be humid and it's most likely not going to rain . If I can like knock on wood somewhere , but so it's going to be .

Speaker 6

Yeah , it's going to be . Never rains in Southern California , right See , I'm old enough to remember that song .

Speaker 2

I have a very cute picture of us before Tinkerbell , like in garbage bags , but it's not going to be like Florida , where you just really can't tell . So I would definitely pack layers but I wouldn't be concerned . It's going to be like 90 degrees .

Speaker 4

Yeah , and if you're used to snow , it's not going to be crazy for you , but we're used to between 70 and 100 degrees on any given day . So for me , january , I'm always in pants and socks and a long sleeve shirt and a sweatshirt , and sometimes a beanie , because it's dependent upon where you're at , and then it's like 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning .

It is going to be cold , but it'll end up probably being a beautiful day . But this past year it rained literally every day for a year .

Speaker 5

So in theory , if you're planning on wearing a layered costume , a number of layered costumes , you think you'd be good then yeah , because I don't want to wear that .

Speaker 2

OK , cool . Honestly , I would plan on it being like sweatshirt weather . Oh , ok , you know , like sweater weather , Like it's beautiful .

Speaker 4

Oh my gosh Sweater weather . You said that's so cute . Say it one more time that was adorable .

Speaker 2

Oh , I'm now nervous . Sweater weather , no do it Do it Sweater weather .

Speaker 7

I believe . One last question in regards to the actual Run Disney weekend Do they have Pacers for the races ? Do we know if ? Did they have them in the past ?

Speaker 2

Yes , so they definitely have them in the past . I remember seeing them . I'm trying to see in the book here if they had that shirt , but I love when they do that , but no , they don't have anything about that . But I would assume everything is going to be the same in that regard , especially because of Jeff Galloway .

So I don't see it in here at all , but I'll keep looking . But yes , from my memory , yes , they had Pacers , did they have ?

Speaker 11

a similar size to what we are used to at Run Disney weekends in Orlando , or what was a corral situation like ?

Speaker 2

OK . So from my memory it felt very small . It felt like a local race , even though I know it's not . The corral situation was the same as in the sense of we had A , b , c , d , whatever , but it's very much just like hey , go find your section .

So again , I don't know if now they'll be a little bit more tight with who they're letting in and where they wouldn't let you go up in your corral at all . But it wasn't . Let me just tell you , going from land to world , it felt much more intense and so this was more laid back , especially at the starting area . It just felt a lot smaller .

Speaker 11

And I have a question for both of you , you and Alicia Kristen . What do you prefer ? Which was your favorite ? If you could do just one for the rest of your life , which would you do ?

Speaker 5

Pressure's on man .

Speaker 1

Oh yeah , that's really hard , I mean for me it's Disney World , because Wine and Dine is my favorite . But that being said , there's absolutely things I love about Disneyland .

Speaker 2

I agree I love , I think I would pick Disneyland . I just feel like and , Alicia , maybe you remember this too like running down Main Street felt so small not small but empty and like in the best way , Very small and sweet and easy , and so that's why I like the Disney races .

Speaker 11

I'm going to have to try one . Sounds like we're all going to have to take a little rise and run vacation .

Speaker 6

Maybe next year .

Speaker 11

And I'll do one together , because I would if all of you guys weren't there . It would be a little different and sad for me . So we all have to go together .

Speaker 7

Obviously , we're going to run the races , but most of us are going in the parks and doing some park days , either before or after or during or all of that . So what is like your I don't know five-sin-nits , first timer to Disneyland , tips and tricks or must rides ? I know in Disney World you have this is a loaded question .

Speaker 4

All right , let's get ready for soon .

Speaker 7

I'm ready , but specifically , we have park hoppers or do you do one park per day ? Those specific questions that someone might need to know For sure .

Speaker 4

You only need technically like three days . I think you need one Disneyland day , one DCA day and then you can do a park hopper Because I feel like they're so small to where you can do that and then you kind of play around with that park hopper . You play around with whichever one you like more .

I think obviously Magic Kingdom is a lot like Disneyland and DCA is a lot like Hollywood Studios . We do not have an animal kingdom or an Epcot , but I think that Epcot could probably put into DCA .

So if you're like a really Magic Kingdom person , like head to Disneyland first , if you really love Epcot and you really love Hollywood Studios Except Hollywood Studios is like a 50-50 . Because all of our Star Wars stuff is at Disneyland . So take that into account too . But it is very like .

Dca is my favorite , but I think that it's also just like how people would play with their like I have memories here . That's where I took my kid , like he loves Pixar , so like all of my memories are with DCA . So I would always choose DCA .

And , of course , like y'all , that's where the alcohol is , so like if you like to drink beer or have really fun cocktails or , you know , want to be Baymax , like An Avengers campus is at .

Speaker 7

DCA . Oh my god , you guys Can .

Speaker 4

I just tell you that there is like an amazing Captain America that is like top notch , like it is . If you need to see Captain America , you just hit that park , just hit that one , just do that one , don't even worry about Disneyland what ?

Speaker 2

do you think ? What do you think the interviews for Captain America was ? Do you think it was just like Turn around ? Okay , you're good .

Speaker 7

You got to check , you know . Make sure he has America .

Speaker 6

That's America buttocks .

Speaker 11

It has to be believable Do it .

Speaker 4

Oh , he's beautiful , Kristen . What about you ? Okay ?

Speaker 2

so if I was , I like the whole three day thing . I would do Thursday , friday . I would rest Saturday , if you're concerned about your half , and then do a half or do a park day after the half , and I agree I like that . Like one day Disneyland , one day DCA and then the park hopper . But just remember that the fireworks are amazing , but so is Phantasmic .

If it's running at the time it's way better at land than at world . So if that is something you really want to see , I highly recommend maybe doing two nights at Disneyland One where you can see the fireworks and one where you can see Phantasmic , but two like some things that you should not miss at land versus world .

Like she said , avengers Campus is awesome . Cars Land area is really really good . There's an Alice in Wonderland dark ride that they don't have . Definitely check out the Snow White ride . Now they kind of like added in some seven doors mind train elements into it and then you've got to do like the storyboat canal area in Phantasmic land . So fun .

Speaker 4

I love that , your team Disneyland , because , like you can tell that you've got young kids . I'm like like during Halloween , like the , the ? Oh my gosh . What are they called ? The gardens of the galaxy ? The drop ride oh my gosh .

Speaker 2

Like scream zone at so fun , it's so fun .

Speaker 4

It is so amazing , it's so good , and so is the Incredicoster and the , the wheel of death , like the Ferris wheel . Just do it , just go on the swinging one and just no .

Speaker 2

You're insane All tight . No , I love it , I love it .

Speaker 4

You have a drink and then you go on it and you lift your hands . It's so fun . It's fantastic . It's so good . It's so good .

Speaker 8

Oh .

Speaker 4

I don't forget every time and I text and I and I tag Australia in it , because I made her go with me one time and she was like I hate you for forever . And I was like but you love me though , cause we went on it .

Speaker 3

I know there are some opportunities to ride rides during run Disney races . I mean , as we know , you know they had the tea cups open in the carousel for marathon weekend . Obviously , Everest is always a given . Does Disneyland do anything like that in the parks that they have in the past ?

Speaker 2

And they like to tease you by having Dumbo flying or having other rides going around . In my experience they never have , but I will say they have way more character stops in the parks than we do at world . They're like I mean , there was , I think , my first Tinkerbell .

Every single princess was on that stretch of like little area by small world and we just went to do all the way down the line , every single one . So no rides , but more characters , which is nice , so excited .

Speaker 7

Oh my gosh . You know we've talked about Disneyland , but California itself has a ton of theme parks within reasonable distance of Anaheim itself , and especially if you're coming from the East coast , I know you want to try and hit as much as you can whenever you're over there .

So if , say , we leave Disney World on Monday after the marathon , if we're doing Marathon weekend and head over to California and we have a whole week there , if we're only doing three days at Disneyland , do we do Universal ? Do we do Not Sparey Farms ? Or have a day in LA ? What would be an expert's recommendation ?

Speaker 4

First of all , you're going to be tired . So there's that , like tired Disney running on Disney magic . I think that you can do any of them . Like Not , sparey Farm is like super close . We've got like a lot of fun roller coasters . We go every . We go once a year . With that , my son and I just got annual passes to Universal .

Universal , though , is a little bit farther away , and it's fun for like a day or like a half a day , because I've heard that Universal is way better at Florida than it is at , like , california . So , like for me personally , I don't feel like that would be that like a huge of a draw . Not , sparey Farm is cute , but like you're there , I don't know .

Like in my mind , like you're there to like do Disney , like , if you're going to go see something , go see like the ocean . That's my personal opinion .

Go to San Diego , go like there's a lot of things to do in LA that are like the Hollywood sign , but again , like you're there to see people , I think that majority of the time are going to be , you're going to be spending so much time with like seeing people and eating food and resting because I'm glad that Kristen brought that up , that's , I mean , that's

my personal opinion . But again , I live here , so I also don't leave Walt Disney World when I go , I just stay .

Speaker 2

I was just going to say be prepared , because we went from Disneyland to Universal and it's Kristen . Tell me if I'm wrong , but I feel like it took us like 45 minutes to go there so far , okay , so far . We're just going to be camping food in , so that's just something that's a little bit different than Disneyland .

Speaker 4

And the food isn't super great either .

Speaker 2

And it's really it's very expensive . The food is very small in portion , but if you're a big Harry Potter or like a Mario Brothers person , it might be fun . Might be fun for like a day , but I think if you've never been to Disneyland , I mean , if it were me I would do five days at Disneyland .

I just I like to do everything like 10 times , so you could fill up all of your time at Disneyland .

Speaker 4

Yeah , I totally , I totally , 100% agree with that . You could easily do like five , five to seven days Like that . I think that it's you'll find rides that you really love or sections that are completely different than Walt Disney World that you just really love and appreciate .

And it's so different when you see it in the morning and the midday and then at night because , like Cars Land just comes to life at night and so there's Avengers campus and like the parades are completely different and the fireworks show , like I've got goosebumps , like I'm so excited . It's just like there's so many beautiful different things .

But going back to Universal , like if you are a Mario person , they did that really , really well . So if , like , you have a kid that's 16 and they're like you just need to go take photos , like that is you could spend the entire day doing that .

Speaker 11

Or if you're an adult who's in their forties that just wants to go , that's also a pretty good idea . I mean , every time we go .

Speaker 4

We spend the entire day there . It's fantastic , but , mind you , for the food there you have to be at opening in order to get the cafe food , you have to get on the list and you have to . It's like insane , but we've yet to try it , so I don't know .

Speaker 7

Well , I know I am excited about the Disneyland races and I hope this answered some questions for all of our friends out there , and I know I mean I learned a lot .

Speaker 8

I learned a lot . Oh , my God .

Speaker 7

Okay , and thank you so much to Kristin and Kristen for sharing all of your knowledge . Thank you .

Speaker 3

I don't know about you all , but that was a tremendous amount of really , really useful information . I know for myself I have not been to Disneyland since my senior year in high school and I know that that resort has changed so much , so getting that information was really , really helpful .

Obviously , I think we'll be able to dive into this a lot more once the official event guide gets released in a couple of weeks , but if anybody would have additional questions for our guests tonight , you can reach out to Kristin Bussey . She was , you know , talking a lot about the logistics of just Disneyland in general .

You can reach her on Instagram at KristenKRISTEN , underscore Bussey , b-u-s-s-e-y . And then the other Kristin that we had on , you can find her on Instagram at RunFitMama . And what's also really cool , too , is each one of them has their own dedicated Facebook communities as well .

So , kristin Bussey , she heads up the Run Princess Family Facebook group , so you can go check that out , and then also RunFit Mama . Kristin also runs the Dopey Strong group on Facebook .

So , again , really , really fantastic resources that , if you have additional questions , you know reach out to them personally or maybe , you know , start a thread on those Facebook pages and you'll be able to get all your questions answered .

Speaker 6

Thanks , greg . I chuckled a little bit when you talked about not being at Disneyland since your senior year in high school , because the last time I was at Disneyland you got a book with tickets in it an A ticket , a B ticket , an E ticket . It was the year of the Bicentennial , 1976 .

So I'm guessing that place has changed a little since I've been there too . I do hope to get there next year . It sounds like a lot of fun . I really enjoyed listening to all of you talking with both Kristin's and I do appreciate it's fun talking to both of them . I haven't seen them for a while , so I was glad they got to join us .

Speaking of friends , our friend Pamela Pam from Fluffy Fizzies is going to drop by next week to tell us a bit about what she's got coming up for this race season . In the meanwhile , you can head over to her website fluffyfizziescom . Fluffy Fizzies All One Word and submit a pre-order for the Wine and Dine Expo . Don't forget , use the code HAPPYRUNNINGALLONEWORD .

Save 10% on your order with Pam . Got a note from Pam . Actually I think she posted it on Facebook . She did that fundraiser for us to help us raise money for our charity bribes , and it raised a total of just a little over $1,000 combined throughout for all the folks who asked for Pam's help . A lot of work involved in that on her part .

Speaker 3

Absolutely .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I don't know if she'll be doing it again last year , I know next year , I know last year she said no more and then she did it this year . She's still on the fence .

But , gosh , pam , all of us , whether you do it again or not , please know that all of us really appreciate your effort and the money that got raised for charities going to multiple good causes . Let's not forget our friends at Kauai and Pizza Apparel . Get ready for your costumes . I got my costume in this week for the Wine and Dine 5K .

My Mad Hatter costume arrived , so I'm ready to go , but you still have time . I think we still have time for Wine and Dine with Alec at KPA . He's getting close .

Speaker 8

It's going to be very close yeah actually our Halloween order deadline was September 20th , so I'm talking that as Wine and Dine weekend because it's only two days after Halloween . But her rush order deadline is October 10th for Halloween , so I would go by those dates if you need something in a rush .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I would too . Now , when she was with us , she gave us a little more time , but I wouldn't put the pressure on that . If you need something from KPA , Kauai and Pizza Apparel for Wine and Dine , it is time to order .

Speaker 11

I got a rush order from them last time and it came super fast , so don't be afraid , you'll get it in time and it'll be super comfy . I love drawing in it and I'm actually going to wear it again for Wine and Dine .

Speaker 6

Oh , it's good stuff . Yeah , if you go to her website kauaiandpizzaapparelcom , you can use our affiliate link . That link is Rise and Run . That won't work on her Etsy site . However , if you go to her Etsy site , a lot of stuff that she has there is available for immediate delivery , so you can get that too .

Anyway , good friend , we talked to her a couple episodes ago Kauai and Pizza Apparel .

Speaker 3

I just want to remind all of our listeners out there and friends that we are still running our special raffle to be a co-host on one episode of the show this fall .

But I am very , very pleased and happy to report that over the last couple of days we did get enough donations in and both Bob and I have now reached our fundraising goals for Marathon Weekend on behalf of Good Kids to World . But don't let that stop you if you are interested in wanting to enter that raffle and be a co-host on the show .

Obviously , you know , even though we hit our fundraising goals , every dollar that goes towards to give kids to world really will be one step closer for a very special child to be able to have a vacation of a lifetime . So if you're interested , we still have the information on our Facebook page .

It will be open until October 3rd at 5 pm Eastern , and then that's when we'll make the join , so you still have a little bit more time to get your name in the running for that .

Speaker 11

And you can come hang with us .

Speaker 6

Absolutely Great . Thank you to everyone who participated or who plans to participate . Thank you so very , very much . We're grateful . Know that your funds are going to a great place . Hey , another another way of supporting the program our Patreon link . You can find that at patreoncom slash rise and run podcast . We appreciate it .

So it's a great way to support the podcast . We appreciate all of you who have done so so far and we'd like , as we do every week , we'd like to highlight a couple of those names .

Speaker 5

Yeah , and I like to usually try and find some way to make it sound pretty epic . So I know I did Star Wars last time and I had to think quick about this one , I don't know . I feel like back into the 2000s , movie trailers had these really cool movie trailer voices , so I'm going to try and do it .

Speaker 6

Okay , this is all right , All right , all right , I can't wait in a world full of runners .

Speaker 5

We have these new Patreon members . Starting off , I have Sharon . She's from Leesburg , virginia . Next up , we have Mark . He's from Brown Summit , north Carolina . Then we have Lena and if I got it wrong , I'm sorry , but guess what ? You're from primarily Grove , arkansas . I feel like I'm going through the genres right now . You guys , I feel like I'm missing one .

Oh , I gotta do a romantic voice now . And then we have Tracy from Jefferson , texas . You guys , thank you so much for being Patreons with us . We really do appreciate it . And this movie comes out Thursdays starring Jack .

Speaker 6

Amazing , amazing Thanks , jack . Thank you to all of our Patreons Sharon , mark , lena , tracy , thank you . We're still not through the list , gang . If you haven't heard your name , it's coming up , I promise . Speaking of coming up next week , the plan right now is for next week's show .

Remember we said we couldn't decide whether to do Disneyland first or budget first . Well , we did Disneyland first . We're going to try to do the budget episode going to Disney on a budget . Ways to save money at Disney World . Upcoming episode 106 . My friends , it's time for the race report .

All right , friends , now look , I know I explained this from time to time . I know it's confusing and I'm not . You know , if you get it , great . If not , keep doing what you're doing . Don't stop doing what you're doing in terms of race reports .

But I will tell you that I go through that race report file every Friday , the one that's at the top of the page in the group . I go through that every Friday and every now and then I will see someone has , and the purpose of that is for you to tell us what's coming up . Hey , I'm going to be running this in November .

I'm going to be running this in January , but every now and then I will get there on a Friday and someone will say , hey , last Sunday I ran this and I go . Well , nuts , I missed it for the episode . Some of them I can't overlook .

For instance , last week in Windsor , connecticut , erica ran the Tavern Trot three and a half mile and made her first race report . Now how we can't we can't overlook her first race report , especially since she ran this three and a half miles in under 30 minutes . Her husband ran it in just a little over 25 and Erica PR . Yeah , we can't overlook that .

Nor can we overlook the tour de Fleur half marathon in Dallas . Kim and her friend Rachel ran there . Course started and ended at the beautiful Dallas Arboretum Great support , run , mainly around a beautiful lake . Second half marathon for Kim and despite a few setbacks , she took 54 minutes off her first half marathon time .

Wow , yeah , yeah , that's almost almost about four and a half minutes a mile , so that's really good . Kim wrote and I want to read this in verbatim , and it's an all capital letter , so I have to shout . I'm not going to shout . The training is so important , family . Thank you , kim . You're absolutely right . I got to catch up on one more .

Fort Collins , colorado . I remember talking about this one that Amanda and Joy ran the fall equinox half marathon , but I didn't have any report . It was in that other section that I don't usually look at fun , mostly downhill course , nice temperatures . Amanda and Joy both PR .

They are on to dopey , we'll see them in January and they're going to be in Disneyland gang for the Dumbo races . So that's back a week . Let's get started . This weekend , saturday , is Susquehanna half marathon and Harvard a grace . Maryland , tara and Victoria were there .

I'm happy I grew up in the Northeast part of the country , otherwise there's no way I would have gotten Susquehanna and I'm pretty sure I got Harvard a grace right .

Speaker 3

Yeah , Bob , I think the reason why we haven't heard anything from our two friends here is because , unfortunately , weather was really really bad this weekend up here in the Northeast and I believe the whole race weekend got canceled .

Speaker 6

Well , that would explain why I didn't hear anything from Tara and Victoria . The Northeast got hit by the tropical storm and I know a lot of bad weather and in fact further on down here I know there's another event that got canceled .

Yeah , tara and Victoria , both are usually real reliable in terms of reporting things , so I was surprised not to hear anything that makes sense . So now I don't care if I pronounce it right or not . In Columbus , indiana , the Mill Race Half Marathon Illiana and her dad , nelson , nice pictures , nice race . This one makes Illiana proud of her hometown .

She and her dad wore their half marathon princess shirts . They wanted to do a little Disney representing at the race . With the training that she's done , the race adrenaline , having dad there with her . She made it . Goal was two hours , 15 minutes Was her goal . She beat that by better than 30 seconds .

Her previous record , previous PR for a half was princess , which was 240 . So again , we're looking at a 25 minute , if my math is right , we're looking at a 25 minute drop in your half marathon . That's amazing . That is , and I'm quoting now that's a PR baby . On to Northport , new York , the great Cal Harbor 10K .

Megan was there , 46th running of this event , one of the most popular 10Ks in the US . This one was also the US track and field association's national 10K championships , so a lot of fast runners with a lot of fast times there . This one went on . Megan finished in 55 , 25 . Great time for a 10K and a three minute course . Pr in Paris , texas , paris , texas .

We , the Paris pairs runs . Now we had a family event here . Allison , james and Wendy did these . They run a 5K in the morning and then a half marathon in the evening , both on Saturday , same day . Though Allison's comment on the 5K , it was a small enough group doing the event that the event staff knew all the regular runners .

They walked the 5K in the morning , then ran the half . The half started at seven in the evening . Everybody who completes the race gets a pint glass and those who do the day night pair get medals . Course was out and back . Local trail Favorite takeaway . Allison says the trail races have the best snacks .

They were all , by the way , if I'm pretty sure , looking at the photos , all of them will resplendent in their rise and run year , which probably took . You know you're running that stuff . Take a couple seconds a mile off your pace . That's pretty good . After the half Wendy said it was the hardest race she's done .

She had hoped to PR in half , use it for a proof of time for Dopey . That didn't quite happen . But when she gets up the next morning her daughter calls and says hey , mom , you got third in your age group for the 5K and you finished first in your age group for the half .

Speaker 11

Oh , that works .

Speaker 6

Pretty cool . Let's see we were in Paris , texas . Let's move to Jacksboro , texas , where our buddy Jason , along with his friend Mia and Jason's wife Missy , participated in the North Texas Ultra 52-Miler . Jason and Mia took on the 52-Miler , Missy ran the 10K . It was brutally hot in Texas last weekend . Summer's gone from some of the country , but not all of it .

The feels like temperature at its peak in this race reached 108 .

Speaker 3

Wow , jason knows , jason knows , he still had it even with that .

Speaker 6

Yeah , it gets dangerous .

Speaker 5

No , they have one that's one of the hottest races in the US is called one of the Badwater races . It's like 100-Miler that you do in 100 some degrees . It's so bad that actually , if you don't run on the road with the part with the white line , your shoes melt .

Speaker 6

Okay , enjoy that one . Enjoy that one when you do it , Jack Let us know . Jason knows how to pick them . The other ultra that I know he did this year was the keys , and the keys was the keys is usually warm . The keys was brutally hot this year , but let's see how they did here . All right , Missy finished her 10K and then crewed for Mia and Jason .

Mia had the drop at mile 42 . Not because of the heat , but because she saw a couple snakes on the course and she is petrified as snakes and she said , in the words of Indiana Jones snakes . Why does it have to be snakes ? She said that's enough , I'm out of here .

Speaker 11

I heard somebody call snakes , nope ropes once . I thought that was the funniest thing , because I feel the same way .

Speaker 6

Now Jason continued and Jason finished . And Jason pulled off a DFL finish . That's right , he was the last person across the finish line . But 17 people registered for this 52 mile event , 15 showed up to the start , only four finished . So , DFL number four is impressive , Jason . Well done , Jason's first 52 milers . So Yay .

Winston Salem , North Carolina , the Salem Lake Trail 30K . Our buddy Mark was there for that one . Washington no , it's Washington . Washington DC , Dulles Day Run the Runway 10K . Sharon was there . Nasty weather she got to practice her foul weather race that storms canceled the kids races . I think the only race that went of those schedule was this 10K .

This particular event was the first one Sharon did when she started road racing . This year poured with strong headwinds I mean I've seen some video and all that . The weather was just ugly . So congratulations to those of you that finished . Congratulations to you , Sharon .

At the end she's as drenched as she would have been , as she had run the thing in a swimming pool , but she finished third in her age group . So congratulations , Sharon . Sharon , congratulations on gutting it out and on that strong finish . In my neck of the woods , St Petersburg , Florida , the peanut butter and jelly .

5k and 10K , Laura , and ran that one PB&J 5K . Jack , you in next year , Awww .

Speaker 7

Ha , ha , ha , ha ha ha .

Speaker 6

Laura ran the 10K and did her strong Galloway intervals most of the time . After she's done , you get unlimited peanut butter and jelly sandwiches .

Speaker 3

Jack , I will pay the entry fee for this race for you . I will give you the money out of my own pocket , just so I can see you . I mean , eat one sandwich .

Speaker 5

I like jelly sandwiches oh we know .

Speaker 9

It doesn't make any sense with peanut butter .

Speaker 6

I'm sorry . Oh yeah , do you ? Yeah , number one , let's continue real quick . She says you could also have them make you a fluffer-nutter sandwich . You guys know what that is , fluffer-nutter .

Speaker 11

No clue . What is that ?

Speaker 3

Isn't it a ?

Speaker 11

New England . Thing .

Speaker 3

Well , it's like a marshmallow-y substance , yeah .

Speaker 8

Yeah , I mean , it was invented here , I think take marshmallows and put them in the microwave to get all mushy .

Speaker 11

Yeah .

Speaker 8

And you put it on your sandwich . Yeah , then put peanut butter on it .

Speaker 6

Put peanut butter with it , yeah .

Speaker 11

Heck , yeah , you do .

Speaker 6

I remember it from when I was a kid . I haven't seen it in years , not down here , but I remember it . They also had cups so you could get pickles to go as a side with your peanut butter and jelly . It just doesn't sound .

Speaker 5

right , it sounds perfect yeah . This is like . I'm sure the race was fun , but the food choices are questionable .

Speaker 11

This is like exactly what I want during every race . So this is my race , I feel .

Speaker 6

All right , make a plan to be down here next year , ali , we'll get Jackie into it . I told Laura I'd try to make it . I even thought about registering late this year but I had the long , I had the 14-miler to do it . I really couldn't work this one in . Even if I did , there is a way to do the 5K and the 10K . You do the 10K first .

I think they give you an hour 15 before they start the 5K . But I bailed and did my long run here . But next year , next year , I'm definitely going to look at it and if I have time , if I can schedule it early enough , I'll do it . It was . Let's move on to Fort Smith , arkansas , where it was a big weekend for our buddy Joe .

He started with the Stampede 10K . The three amigos were there . If you are not familiar , my friends , the three amigos . Joe is one of our senior runners and the three amigos are two of his friends in the Fort Smith Arkansas area and they all set a great example for all of us by showing up at a whole lot of these events and doing really well .

Joe took first in his age group in the 10K . His buddies Johnny took first age group in the 5K and his friend Gary took first in the age group in the 5K walk , greg . Here's another one that was canceled in New Egypt , new Jersey , the Run the Vineyards 5K . Grace was going to do that one but that got washed out .

In Banff , alberta , canada , melissa's road race . Guess who ran Melissa's road race Melissa did . Isn't that perfect .

Speaker 3

How convenient .

Speaker 6

Yeah , she ran . Melissa ran the Half Marathon . She does it between 19 and 20 kilometers and , if you're not familiar , the Half Marathon is 21.1 kilometers long . There's a giant hill . That's a bad place to have a hill in a Half .

Speaker 11

Marathon . I've been to Banff and it's like very mountainous it's a mountainous area . Yeah , it's gorgeous . But , that makes sense that there'd be a hill .

Speaker 6

It would . This one came right at the end . Melissa got it done . Melissa beat two hours . In fact , she beat 155 . 154.44 . Watch out , dopey , she's coming for you . Amanda and Brad were also there running the 10K In Southampton , new York , the Hamptons Half Marathon . Dina ran this one . This was Dina's first Half Marathon , so let's get this out of the way .

We know what that means . Congrats on the PR , dina . Cold and rainy as it was in so much of the Northeast this weekend To start , her watch was covered up . She couldn't see how much time was on and so she planned on doing an 18 minute per mile pace , but she missed some of the beeps on her watch , couldn't see what was going on .

All said and done , she knocked out the 13.1 miles at less than a $16.30 pace . So good for you , dina . Tough conditions , didn't know how you were running . I think that's pretty cool . She said her friends at Rise and Run kept her company for several of the miles . You honor us , my friend , by bringing us along for your first Half Marathon . Congratulations .

Jersey City , new Jersey . Heather was doing the Newport Liberty Half Marathon , first time running in a tropical storm . Yeah yeah , not many of us do that , heather . A lot of us look outside and go , yeah , no , I'm staying home . Wind started almost when they continued the whole way .

The second half was pretty rough because the winds get tough , the awful headwind , big gusts around mile eight . Her legs started cramping so she did something smart , adjusted her intervals and finished this half marathon .

You know it's tough , it's an embrace to suck kind of thing , but then when you get done you've got these great stories to tell about how you ran in the tropical storm . Speaking of great stories , and I'm just going to hit the highlights here Our friend Wendy from Australia .

Wendy was with us back in episode 16 talking about Achilles International , and now they help disabled runners . I think their primary emphasis is on helping people who have vision problems . So this was the 10 kilometer on the Melbourne Grand Prix circuit in Australia . Well , her friend Brooke was running , but Brooke's sighted guide wasn't available .

So at the last minute Wendy jumped in . Brooke had a little bit of a rough start because she had trouble getting to the race . She had one Uber that cancelled on her , then another dropped her off far from the start . And here Brooke is with vision problems and she's not sure which way to go . Wendy eventually finds her . They ran , walked the distance .

Brooke finished with a smile on her face . Wendy , that's a great story . Again , I didn't do it justice here , just a little bit of it , but we're proud of you . That's really , really neat . So congratulations Brooke , congratulations Wendy .

In San Ramon , california , the Rocky Ridge Half Marathon , juan Jose , better known to his friends as JJ , ran this one , jj's first race in California , I believe . Yeah , whether it was perfect , tough course , total elevation change of nearly 4,000 feet in this half marathon , jj does a great job , excellent runner , very pleased with his time .

Also very pleased to find the many delicious snacks at the finish line . I'm glad you got your priorities right , jj . Congratulations on a great run . In Lakewood , colorado , caroline ran the Baby Bear 10K Trail Run , beautiful trail run , but running in Lakewood , Colorado wasn't like running at sea level in Hawaii , which Caroline typically does .

In Independence , kansas , our friend Tommy celebrated her 50th birthday by running a 50K the Flat Rock 50K .

Speaker 3

Happy birthday .

Speaker 6

Yeah , pretty cool Way to go , Tommy . That's awesome , Incredible experience Voting Tommy here . She says I can barely walk today , but it was so worth it . And my son-in-law won the 12K . That's pretty cool .

It doesn't say this , Greg , but I'm almost certain this is Tommy's first 50K , so even if it's not , let's hit the bell just for her birthday , if nothing else .

Speaker 3

Absolutely .

Speaker 6

All right . Middleburg , florida , the Suffer Fest 12K . Melissa was there . We had a meter time from last year and last year was her only other 12K . So yeah , it's a PR .

Speaker 5

So many PRs .

Speaker 6

Yeah , well , how many times do we say it ?

Speaker 5

Yep .

Speaker 6

Summer training , fall PRs and it works . It really does . It's so tough , but then when the weather cools although I don't think it cooled much in Middleburg this is up near Jacksonville so it may have been a little cooler there than it was here in this part of the state Tough technical trail , a shocking amount of hills for Florida .

Look , the second highest peak in Florida is Space Mountain . So there are no real , there are no mountains , but there are some areas that get kind of hilly and this one apparently is one of them . She definitely suffered a bit . I think you got to be gutsy just to register for a race called the Suffer Fest .

But yeah , here she's saying it was beautiful weather , so she's not complaining there . Good job , melissa . In Dwight , illinois , the Dwight Harvest Days 5K . It would only be appropriate if Dwight ran this one , just like Melissa ran the Melissa's Run . Sorry , stephanie ran the Dwight Harvest Days Run . Good for you , stephanie .

Stephanie added another eight miles to the 5K so she'd have a half marathon for her training plan . Beautiful weather in Illinois . Knocked a good five minutes off of her previous 5K PR time Wearing out the bell again . In Apapka , florida , mary ran the 9-11 Memorial 5K beautiful morning .

She also incorporated this one into a longer training event , incorporated this 5K into her 15 miles of training . 9-11 Memorial beautiful ceremony . Before the event In the 5K they walked out behind the bagpipers to the start line Coming up . Saturday in Scottsdale , arizona , the Run 4 Cancer 8K . This one was probably on a golf course because 4 is spelled F-O-R-E .

Jennifer was there First day of fall , first day of Jennifer's race season , took fourth in her age group , kept her time under 15 , 50 minutes , which for an 8K is an excellent time . Almost said 15 , that would have been , for an 8K , a really good time .

Speaker 3

A golf-themed race is really fun . I really like the medal on this one that they posted . If I were to run this race , I think the only way appropriate would be to start on a tee box and then maybe run 50 yards into the trees and then stop there for about 10 minutes and try and find myself , and then keep running .

Speaker 6

That's good , Craig . I knew where you were going once you started , but that was funny . That's really good . I hope you wouldn't see any bears in the woods while you're there .

Speaker 8

No no .

Speaker 6

Friends , let's move to Sunday and to the world major , the Berlin Marathon . So in honor of this big event , we've got a special race report spotlight for this episode . Three of our friends who finished Berlin were able to join us Friends with us this evening well , actually it's this afternoon where I am , but this evening where most of them are .

Big event this weekend , the Berlin Marathon . We had several people who participated out of the Rise and Run family . But let me welcome first from the Netherlands , laura's with us .

Speaker 1

Hi everyone .

Speaker 6

Good to see you , laura , from the United Kingdom , from , actually , I think , london . You'll correct me if I'm wrong . Amy's here . Hi and from Munich , not her hometown , but Grace is still in Munich .

Speaker 10

Hi everyone .

Speaker 6

Thank you so much for joining us . I appreciate it . Wow , four countries represented here at the US , the Netherlands , the UK and Germany Outstanding . Is it modern technology grand ? All right , friends , hey , let's start out Now . You all travel to get here . Let's start with the person who traveled furthest to Berlin .

Grace had the trip go once you get there , and what did you do ?

Speaker 10

So it went pretty well . I left from New York on Wednesday night , I took an overnight flight , I had to lay over in Amsterdam and then flew from Amsterdam to Berlin . It was pretty easy . I don't usually sleep that well on red eyes , but you know , such as life . It set me up well on the other end because I was exhausted when I landed .

So you got to go right to sleep , then I assume , Well , I landed like maybe one o'clock in the afternoon and by the time I got to the hotel we went to the Expo on Thursday and then had dinner and basically crashed .

Speaker 6

Yeah , yeah , jet lag can get to you . Did it take you long to get over the jet lag ?

Speaker 10

No , not usually , and it didn't this time . So I was pretty lucky on that regard . But I've done the red eye to Europe with some frequency , so I'm kind of used to how the body reacts .

Speaker 6

How about that ? Good for you , all right . I think the second furthest trip then would be Amy . You were at least one time zone away . We don't count that as jet lag , amy one time zone , but did you fly , I presume ?

Speaker 9

Yeah , we flew . So we flew early on Thursday morning , so we left the UK at like eight o'clock and we got in about 10.30 and then got the train straight to the hotel and then sort of did all of our check-in bits and pieces and , famous grace , we ended up going to the Expo on the third day as well .

Speaker 6

Awesome , Awesome . And Laura you're well , I don't know how far away you are . I think you took a train , Is that correct ?

Speaker 12

Yes , we took the train . I am in the same time zone as Germany . I live on the east side of the Netherlands , so my weekly training runs are a little bit through in Germany .

Speaker 4

How about ?

Speaker 12

that Our train ride was less than five hours and it was very comfortable . I think I had more leg space than any plane . I ever had so it was a nice way to transport . We arrived on Friday and checked in in our hotel and then went straight to the Expo .

Speaker 6

I'm going to come back and ask about the Expo in just a second , but that's kind of neat and sometimes here in the US we forget . You talk about doing a training run and going into Germany . That's pretty cool . I think that's kind of neat across an international border on a training run . I don't know , it's probably nothing special , but it just sounds neat .

Speaker 12

There's just a white rock that says , oh , this is the border of Germany . So it's not very special .

Speaker 6

Well , it's okay , it's okay . Well , we're going to call it special anyway . That's neat . Yeah Well , let's talk the Expo a little bit . I'll start , amy . I'll start with you . How was the Expo Anything special ?

Speaker 9

Yeah , it was . So we went to the Temple Hof and I do apologize for any pronunciation if I don't get them quite right , there are no native Germans here .

Speaker 6

Amy , I think you're going to be okay .

Speaker 9

So we got to the Temple Hof . So actually my mom and dad were coming to spectate with me . So once you go through the because it's the old airport they take you outside onto the airfield . They actually split up your runners and spectators . So the runners go and pick up a wristband that you have to wear in the event . So they give you a bag , check your .

You had a check-in barcode and you had to show your ID to prove that it was you . So they give you a bag and your wristband and then your spectators could kind of just go along the other side of the barrier and you could meet them at the other end .

So that was a little bit crowded because we got there sort of maybe half an hour after the Expo had actually opened . So we got there pretty early on and then we , once you had your wristband , you could then just go into like the first . It's kind of like , I guess , what would have been like the different terminals of the airport .

So it'd been like made into sections for the different different parts of the Expo . So the first part where we picked up our bib , I like when you registered you could either pick up a poncho at the end of the race or select a . So I selected the poncho .

So I literally just got a race bib by timing chip and anything that I pre-ordered , which was just the jacket , and then yeah , and then you sort of went through one into the merchandise which , as you can imagine , was pretty hectic .

How bad , how bad it was everywhere and then , yeah , then you sort of went on into sort of the sponsored sort of exhibitors and then the other sort of exhibitors into the next section . So it was it was pretty it really actually get anything . I kind of pre-ordered what I wanted , so we didn't actually spend a whole lot of time there .

Speaker 6

Okay , grace , grace , did you , did you grab anything at the Expo ? Did you get into the merchandise area ?

Speaker 10

I did a little bit . We got to the Expo . I was traveling with another friend of mine . We entered the race together and we got to the Expo I think a little later than Amy . We got there like about five o'clock and it was busy , but not not , I don't get the .

I think we kind of picked a good time to be there because we kind of like went , got , went right up , picked up our bibs . It's interesting they they print your bibs out for you on the spot , like what we have , you know , and what I'm used to for races in the U S , where you have the like pre-printed race bibs with the timing chips on the back .

You actually had to rent a timing chip . I guess you don't have to if you already have one , but of course I I don't have one . They have these little timing chips that you high onto your shoelaces , that that's how they find , oh yeah . Yeah , so that was the first time I had done that , so that was a weird and new thing for me .

Speaker 6

So , that's actually that's actually kind of old school . I haven't seen that for a long time the timing things that tie to your shoes , but it works .

Speaker 10

Yeah , yeah , it did . I was nervous about it just because I'd never done it before , but it worked out fine . So I had pre-ordered a couple of things , but then we we both shopped around , we picked up maybe one or two other things that we hadn't not too much Cause .

Again , I had pre-ordered kind of the shirt and the jacket , which was what I really wanted , so Cool .

Speaker 12

Yeah , I did pre-order some things as well because I was afraid that , especially for the jackets that would we , that it would be sold out , because we were there on a second day and I ordered your jackets , the finisher T-shirts . When I got there I also got the like the Berlin marathon T-shirts and a beanie .

Speaker 6

All right , yeah , all right , that's great .

Speaker 1

All right , ladies . So we've talked about the Expo and how you got to the race . Now let's talk about the start and how went from there .

Speaker 12

Let's start with Laura , so the start area is really for runners only . My husband , john , was there to support . He didn't run the marathon and I sat to him that morning for well , meet me somewhere along the course , because the starting area is not really fun for supports to to visit because you lose your runner right away .

When we enter the start area they check if you have your bib and if you have your bracelet that you got at the Expo and then you can enter the the starting area . I was in the last Coral , coral K , and it started at 1030 and the elite started at 915 . I didn't really like that late start because I'm an early riser .

I couldn't sleep anymore after 6am so I decided to get there early so I could get in the front of the Coral . I arrived at 915 . This is a tip for early arrivals as well .

When you see the first Porta John's the toilets in the beginning , skip them because the line is very long On each side on the left and the right in the Corals there are a lot of Porta John as well . When I got there at about 930 , so an hour before the start I only had one person in line before me . So , maybe , maybe , a tip for the next time .

And half hour later and it was very , very busy over- there . How did ?

Speaker 1

the start . Go for you .

Speaker 10

Grace , so I can . I can verify the line , for the Porta Potties did get quite long . I was in it until basically 1028 .

Speaker 8

Oh wow .

Speaker 10

I think we all did in Wave K . I was in it until , basically right up until the start . We were hoping to . You know , we got there , I think , right about 930 . They recommend getting there an hour before your start time . So we got there right at 930 .

We went right into the Coral and we kind of were thinking , okay , we'll use the bathroom now so that we'll be able to kind of move up in the , in the , in in the to the front of the Coral . But by the time we had actually made our way into the Coral it was probably a little bit closer to like 945 , 950 .

So when we got in the line for the bathroom it was already it had already gotten quite long . So we basically just waited in line for the bathroom the entire time . We were waiting there . And so so we just kind of joined the line for the start right as we left the bathrooms .

I had I had hopes to be a little further up in the in the Coral , but I think it ended up being fine because it kind of took my mind off of waiting for the race to start .

Speaker 6

There you go yeah .

Speaker 10

And I just kind of hopped in the line and got moving . So I think it worked out okay .

Speaker 6

I think we had a couple of friends in Coral K Is that correct ? A couple of rise and run friends . Who else was in K ? Who else here ? Amy , amy , you were in K , yeah .

Speaker 9

So my start was a little bit different , only because so I actually booked my trip through a sports company , a tour company so , and they were leaving our hotel at 7.30 in the morning to take anyone that wanted to be guided to the race .

Start with them and obviously , being a little bit nervous about where to go and you know didn't want to get confused with the trains I went really early with them , but they were about 8 o'clock again . More toilet talk , but about 45 minutes away . It was all for the poor to lose .

So yeah , totally agree with the girls there there was not enough for the volume of people . Oh , wow . I think I ended up getting into the Coral about 10 hust 9 by the time . We sort of potted around and waited in queues and things , but also in K as well , with these ladies .

Speaker 6

Nice Outstanding . All right Race time . Tell us some highlights . Go ahead , Amy , you were up . Keep going . Tell us some highlights of this world major marathon .

Speaker 9

Okay . So I mean at the very start , as they sort of moved us all down the wave , start in sort of one long line all the way down this , the tear garden . I think the girls might go to correct me if I'm wrong on that one , but they start you off with a bit of a warm up and I don't know if anyone's seen like the Viking clap .

Speaker 7

Yeah .

Speaker 9

Yeah , and like that just really like got me very excited for things . I was a little bit anxious . So , starting off with the race , you run past the victory column and there's photographers there , so I sort of saw someone else posing and I was like I must be a cameraman coming up because they weren't that old .

I saw high vis vessels , but you know , when you just see them last minute , get ready for that one . My parents , I think , were spectating , so they were maybe just after two kilometers because it was fairly near our hotel .

And then I saw them again at 34 kilometers and then I think obviously my favorite , the highlight of the actual race , was running through the Brandenburg Gate . That was spectacular . As you sort of see it , it's enormous . Like in front of you and as you're coming closer , obviously the crowd is quite vocal when you're getting to that point as well , amazing .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I imagine that would be spectacular .

Speaker 9

Yeah .

Speaker 6

Yeah , Grace , highlights from you please .

Speaker 10

Sure , so I definitely kind of echo everything that Amy said . It's cool to start out and you're kind of going right by the victory column I had done on Friday . We were trying to stay off our feet so we did one of those hop on , hop off bus tours Except we didn't hop off .

We just took the thing around to kind of get the highlights , see the cities my first time in Germany so it was cool for me to kind of pass by the spots that I had learned about on my bus tour to see some of those things . There's the I think it's called the TV Tower that you pass a couple of times .

You pass a couple of times in the first maybe 10K . You can kind of see it in the distance . So it's cool to see that again . I had two friends waiting for me on the course at about 33 kilometers . It was really nice to see them and kind of have that encouragement and see friend faces at kind of that point in the race .

So that was another highlight for me . And of course , running through the Brandenburg Gate . I had taken this race pretty conservatively because I'm actually running New York in six weeks .

So I'm trying not to tire myself out , but I at the Brandenburg Gate , like I knew I really wanted to kind of kick it to the finish and so I was able to kind of I had something left in the tank , so that was really kind of nice to be able to just really go for it in the last like 400 meters .

Speaker 6

That's fantastic . Now , Laura , this was not your first Maryland marathon . Am I correct in that ?

Speaker 12

No , it was my first .

Speaker 6

Oh , it was your first .

Speaker 12

Yeah , I've been to Berlin before . So , we didn't need to see all the highlights in one weekend , because we have seen them multiple times already .

Speaker 6

Okay , so highlights of the race for you please .

Speaker 12

I'm going back to the start because I've got a little . I'm full of tips for a future of a Maryland marathon runners . You have to choose if you start on the left or the right side , because it goes by the . What's the name of the stash ? You again , I've got it here , but it's in German Große Stern , the Victory Callum . It's in English .

Speaker 6

Yeah , yeah , yeah .

Speaker 12

Yeah , so you can go to pass it to the from the left or from the right . When you choose the left side , you stay in the shade much longer .

Speaker 6

Oh , good tip .

Speaker 12

When it's a warmer addition , it could be helpful . Also , what happened days before the marathon ? Some environment protesters painted the Brandenburg Gate red and yellow and they also threw orange paint on the course . The police were able to stop them because they wanted to be on the course to stop the runners .

Unfortunately , the police held them back , but there was a lot of orange paint on the left side of the course and I was on the left side . Quickly , all the volunteers guided the runners around the paint and they all said sorry , and I don't know if Grace and Amy saw the orange paint on course . I did . I started on the two , so I saw it .

Yeah , so apparently it happened right before the start . But yeah , it's not a highlighted paint , but it's .

Speaker 8

No , it's important though .

Speaker 12

Yeah , they handled it very well , so not a lot of shoes were ruined because of that fortune .

Speaker 6

That's good yeah .

Speaker 12

But I got to say the first half of the marathon went by so fast for me . I was such in a focus , I was feeling so good . Sounds a little bit cheesy , but seeing my husband on different spots he chose eight spots to support me .

The public transport is really good in Berlin so he used the underground to get from place to place , so he was able to cheer me on on eight spots and even had an hour lunch between that .

Speaker 6

so I'll be done .

Speaker 12

Good for you , john , nicely done yeah so yeah , it was nice to see the famous buildings and such and I got to say some streets were full of crowd support and some streets were kind of boring . I don't know if the other two experienced that as well .

Speaker 9

Yeah , it was . After doing London last year . I still had that very vivid memory of the crowds being five , six people back throughout the whole race , whereas I found I think it was maybe just a street lined of people and then there were gaps and then it's a batch is where it was definitely more crowded and more volunteer sorry of spectators .

Yeah , it was a lot in that respect .

Speaker 10

Yeah , I would agree . It was definitely the same for me .

Speaker 6

Grace , you told us this is your first time in Germany , so obviously this is your first Berlin , amy , first Berlin marathon for you .

Speaker 9

Yes , first Berlin as well .

Speaker 6

Okay , okay , golly . I thought one of you had done it before , but that's awesome . Three new Berlin marathoners .

Speaker 9

It did the same as Grace . We did the hop-on , hop-off bus on the Friday so that we could get familiar with the city and the site that we know we're looking for on the run .

Speaker 6

Hmm , outstanding Now . No , marathon is easy period . Let's leave that aside , okay . However , I understand that this marathon is relatively flat and relatively runner-friendly and not exceedingly difficult . What would you guys say about that ?

Speaker 10

Sure , I would definitely say it's relatively flat . There are some slight inclines , but they're very gentle , you barely notice them . I would say it's definitely on the more flat side . There are no major highway entrance exit ramps like we have at Disney or the bridges that I'm used to in New York . So , yeah , definitely nothing major like that .

Speaker 12

It's also the course where the world records are being helped .

Speaker 6

That's true ? Yes , it sure is it really is a fast course . That's right , You've got both now , the men's and the women's . They're in Berlin , aren't they ? Yeah ?

Speaker 1

So all of you mentioned that the course was pretty flat . When I was watching on my phone and watching , I didn't know everybody who was running , so I was specifically watching , laura . It looked like you guys had a lot of turns towards the end of the race .

Did you feel like you had to keep turning onto different roads or was that just how it perceived on the map ?

Speaker 9

I definitely felt that , because I knew that the one thing I had been told was , when you see the gate , you're not at the finish . Don't see the gate and sprint , and then you've still got a few hundred meters to go . Every time you went round a corner , I was like it's going to be the gate corner . No , okay , keep going , the gate's not there yet .

There were several , and then eventually the gate was behind one of them .

Speaker 6

Yeah , at the end of 44 kilometers , that stinks . Yeah , come on , show me the finish .

Speaker 1

Did you ever have a similar ?

Speaker 12

experience , laura . No , I actually enjoyed the corners . For me , the parts that were straight ahead were pretty boring . I'm looking at the map right now and we had some sections that were two or three kilometers just straight through and I thought it was never ending .

So when I had a hard time it was fortunately only after 37 kilometers and from 40 , you get a lot of turns and I was like oh , I already see the end of the street , let's go another turn . Oh , another corner . I was just happy with those corners .

And when you turn the final corner and you see that Brandenburg Gate , you know this is the moment , this is almost the finish line . You know it's , the 400 meters behind the gate is the finish , but you can see it's in the distance and you're running towards it and it was a great feeling to finally see that after that last turn .

Speaker 6

That's awesome , Grace . Any comments on that ?

Speaker 10

Yeah , I think I probably leaned a little bit more towards Amy At the end . You're just sort of waiting to see the gate and every time I turned I thought maybe this would be the one . Okay all right maybe the next one and then it wasn't , but it wasn't really until the end that the turns were kind of making me wish it was the last one .

But I think , that's just the end of the run .

Speaker 1

Then you can see the beautiful gate , and so I think that makes it all worth it . I've never done the race , but I would think seeing that is just an amazing feeling . Yeah , it really was .

Speaker 9

I don't know if the other girls noticed . I think it was around 30 kilometers . They were giving massages .

Speaker 6

Oh really . Interesting .

Speaker 9

And opposite there was like volunteers with like kind of little camp beds . I was like if I lie down on that right now , I would not be . I've never seen that on a race before that they give half way of a race .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I've never heard of it .

Speaker 9

There were people there , yeah .

Speaker 6

I'll be darned . That's pretty interesting , thanks .

Speaker 12

I have never been offered Coca-Cola , on course , before they had it as well .

Speaker 6

Yeah , that I've had . That's kind of old school . Yeah , particularly if it's flat Coca-Cola that's the original sports drink . You go back to the 1970s and 80s , prior to Gatorade . Well , gatorade came around in the 60s , but yeah , d-fizz Coca-Cola . Jeff Galley will tell you stories about opening the cans of Coca-Cola the night before to get ready for the race .

Yeah , let's go around the room a couple of last times . Anything that you wanted to share about the race that neither Alicia nor I asked you about so far , grace anything I could talk about the breakfast run on Saturday .

Speaker 10

I don't know if that would be useful , but so I know a lot of the majors have like a 5K on Saturday . They don't do that in Berlin , but they have what's called . I think it's the Generale , it's the company that sponsors it . I don't know what they are or what they do , but it's the breakfast run and it starts at the Charlottenburg Palace and it runs .

It's about a 6K course to the Olympic Stadium . It was . It's really slow and easy , really casual . You don't have to sign up , it's free . It was a lot of fun . It was really cool at the end to run . You run on the track around the Olympic Stadium , which was awesome , that's neat .

Then at the end they have some light breakfast for you , again , all free . It's just pastries , and I think they had bananas , they had fruit juice and water , I think they had soft pretzels .

Speaker 5

Very good .

Speaker 10

It was just kind of a cool experience . It's something to definitely consider if you're ever running the race , just as if you're looking for a shakeout run on Saturday . That was really fun .

Speaker 6

Awesome , that's neat .

Speaker 9

Amy , I just thought of something as well , just from the days before . Obviously , we mentioned shopping at the expo , but we went to the Brandenburg Gate on the Friday . They had the Wall of Fame so you could find your name . They had a merchandise cabing underneath there . You could pick up some bits there .

Also , the Adidas shop near where we were staying I don't know if there were many others around , but they were also selling merchandise from Thursday , friday as well . You could pick up some extra bits if you wanted as well . If you weren't familiar with going to that run before .

Speaker 6

Very good , laura , anything you wanted to add ?

Speaker 12

Yeah , I wanted to talk a little bit about the hydration that is being offered . On course , just keep in mind that the first water stop is at 5K .

Speaker 10

Oh , wow .

Speaker 12

If it's a warmer start , it might be a little bit too late for some people . They are sponsored by Morton , so they have Morton Mix as well . They should offer just one gel at kilometer 27 , but by the time I got there they were all out . I was counting on it . I never had a race where they ran out of fuel , so I was out of fuel after 30 kilometers .

Luckily , the Morton Mix also gives you a lot of sugar . What's the English word ?

Speaker 6

Carbohydrate yeah thank you .

Speaker 12

I was fine in those last 12 kilometers , but keep it in mind that they ran out of fuel , on course . I saw a lot of people running with the hydration fast . That's not a problem in Berlin . If you're comfortable with that , you can do that as well .

Speaker 10

I ran with my hydration vest , which I don't usually do , because they didn't have as many water stops . I wanted to have it .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I was wise .

Speaker 9

I also ran with my hydration vest . The water stops got really , really crowded .

I found the whole thing actually very , very crowded , although the roads were wide I don't know if it's just where at the time that I started , but I did a lot but also they had refill stations , so just at the end of the water If you didn't want to grab a cup they were filling up your bottles for you .

Speaker 6

Very good , yeah , very good .

Speaker 1

All right , ladies , this has been great . We just want to ask you one more question of what is next and when will we see you at Disney next ? Let's start with Grace .

Speaker 10

I have a pretty busy fall . I'm running I mentioned I'm running New York in early November . I'm running the Cape Cod Half in two weeks as kind of a training , using it as a training run , and I'm running Rehoboth the Half in December . I'm doing the 58th half marathons .

So I'm kind of knocking out a couple of states while I do some training runs , and then you will see me at Disney , I'm doing a dopey and I am doing princess .

Speaker 6

Awesome .

Speaker 10

Perfect Disney in the winter .

Speaker 6

Sounds great . See you there .

Speaker 1

What about you , Laura ?

Speaker 12

I don't have many racers plans , but I do have another goal in mind . I want to run a proof of time racer Tam Myler , and I know I have to work very , very hard for it , because right now I couldn't keep up that pace . But yeah , we hope to be back at Walt Disney World for 2025 , the dopey challenge .

Speaker 8

Oh wonderful .

Speaker 12

It's been five years since the last time we went there .

Speaker 6

But you've been busy .

Speaker 12

Yeah , I had a kid in the meantime . Yeah , yeah , a little while yeah .

Speaker 6

COVID mess , and then you started a family .

Speaker 1

Yeah , you and .

Speaker 6

John , that's awesome .

Speaker 1

And then Amy , what do you have planned and when will we see you at Disney ?

Speaker 9

So I haven't got anything else planned this side of the year , but I will be back at Disney for dopey in 2024 . And then also I have the London marathon again in April . So I've got my slight set on those two things at the moment .

Speaker 6

Fantastic , Fantastic . See you in January sounds awesome . Well , it's . It's been delightful speaking with all three of you . I'm glad you found the time . I'm glad we could schedule this when we could speak to you all several time zones away . Congratulations on a world major and we're proud of you and we're glad you were here .

Speaker 12

Thank you Bye . Yeah , thank you for having us . It was really nice yeah .

Speaker 1

Thanks so much . Bye everyone . Thank you so much , ladies , for taking the time to do that , and Amy and Laura both wanted to let everybody know that they got PRs during the Berlin marathon . So way to go , ladies .

Speaker 6

Yeah , they did PR bells , please , also in Berlin , and you have to understand trying to get folks onto the spotlight . It's 2pm here where I am , it was 7pm where Amy was , 8pm where Laura and Grace were , so I'm glad they got a chance to join us , but other folks were traveling back or just had other obligations . I don't want to leave them out , though .

Dan from Ebbing , canada , had a PR with a 336 marathon . Way to go , dan Doug was there . Doug's been having some knee trouble . Slowed him down a little bit , still had fun . Set a course PR . We're counting that . This finished for Doug probably the best of the world majors he's done .

Dramatic run through historic Brandenburg gate at the end , as we heard about in the spotlight . Next up for Doug , goofy and the Dumbo double there Jennifer was there . Jennifer said she knew from about the kilometer 10 it wasn't going to be her day by kilometer 15 . It might be a struggle , particularly as the sun came up , warm things up .

So she focused on enjoying her first international marathon . Now Jennifer's pretty fast when she says it wasn't going to be her day . She still knocks out a 331 marathon , third world major star and fifth Boston qualifying race time . So all things considered for not being your day .

That's a pretty good day , jennifer , nikki not Nikki's best time , but she's been sick . Look , that's okay , this is a big deal . And look , she got to see the pineapple guy at the end . Now , come on , you're running Berlin . You get to see the pineapple guy , found a bike cab to get back to the hotel , posted a picture of that .

That , looked really cool and had a great cheering squad with her , and I'm glad that she had a great time . So that's who we had in Berlin at this world . Major Congratulations to all of you . In Woodville , alabama , the Conqueror , the cave 5k in the cathedral caverns Jimmy ran that one . This one looks really interesting .

Hills were tough , but the cathedral caverns were just gorgeous . Looks like the last mile actually went through the caves really neat . A lot of Jimmy posted some really nice photos here , so that's a great event .

Speaker 1

Yeah , great job , jimmy , and he was really excited because the metal was made out of wood . I mean , I never experienced that before . So great job and I highly recommend everybody look into that race . I know that when you sent me pictures I was like whoa , that's so cool , how many people get to say they ran through a cave .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I think it's something near Huntsville . I think it's up in the northern part of the state near Huntsville and it really really looked pretty . Yeah , running through a cave , that is pretty cool . Alright , we said Joe had a big weekend . Our friend Joe from Arkansas . He did the Fort Smith half marathon on Sunday after doing a 10k on Saturday .

Very challenging and hilly half for Joe . He'd been worrying about it all summer but he managed to finish it and do better than he expected . The Amigos did not accompany him on this race . They were all tuckered out from Saturday's races but Joe continued on , had lots of friends along the route . Joe , congratulations , you continued to inspire me .

I think I may have said that earlier , but I mean it . There was a big virtual race this weekend , the Bimbo Virtual Global Race . I'll just list off here . Joe said he ran that one . I don't think he ran it this weekend , but Joe did a 5k . John , you did this one 5k , did you do it this weekend ?

Speaker 8

Joe did his on Monday , I did mine on Tuesday .

Speaker 6

Okay , nick did this , one didn't specify a distance and Jody did a 10k . I did that last year , I did not do it this year .

Speaker 1

I did it this year . I actually did 10k and the 5k because my mom was supposed to do the 5k . She has some Iliotibial band troubles . I'll take one for the team and do both .

Speaker 6

It's a pretty neat event . It's free . As I recall it's free .

Speaker 8

They give you some nice swag , but you could donate to them to give money to help feed people . It's a win-win .

Speaker 6

Yeah , it's a great event the Janet Bronstein 5miler and National Capital 20miler , washington DC . I see Brenna , nikhil and Molly all signed up for the 20miler , but I don't see any report and I'm wondering again if the weather scrubbed that one out , don't know . Here's another one that might have fallen to the weather the tunnels to towers 5k in New York City .

All right . Well , megan was there running through the rain . Yeah , big event , molly in Illinois the Quad City's half marathon . Kayla ran the Quad City's half marathon . Kayla ran on something other than the treadmill . She actually ran outside . Don't be scared people .

Speaker 11

Speaker 6

You did a good job . I hope she ran it as part of her training and her taper for Chicago , testing out self-pacing across two states . I tried to figure out what the Quad City's were around Moline . I'm pretty sure Moline's one of them , but I couldn't figure out what the other three were . Two weeks until Kayla runs Chicago , her very first world major .

She is really excited and a little bit nervous . It's okay to be nervous , kayla . We wish you the best of luck . Gloucester Mass the lone gold 10k . Christina ran that one , if it did indeed go again . I know the northeast weather was poor . Bellingham , washington the Bellingham Bay Marathon . Jenna was there beautiful 57 degrees at the start .

She ran a 10k Course . Runs along the bay offers some gorgeous views . First race her daughter and she have done I don't know if that's together or ever . I'm going to assume it's together they used it to try out and make sure they had their gear and everything ready for when they run Wine and Dine in five weeks . Good job , jenna Roosevelt .

California the hot pink fun run 5k for breast cancer . Our friends Frank and Carrie ran that one . Carrie knocked this one out in under 34 minutes and Frank , at under 28 minutes , finished second in his age group . Way to go , guys . Proud of both of you Wrapping up the weekend in Sand Point , idaho . Sarah , the long bridge 10k .

They run it on a long bridge . It's an out and back on a bridge . Started out at 50 degrees , cloudy , drizzling , and the weather changed . The pictures looked beautiful after that perfect running weather , blue sky , sunny just as she turned around and started back over the bridge . My friends , that's the episode 105 race report . Okay , marathon weekend .

Friends , you got some miles to do this weekend . Do your best , get them done . You're going to enjoy the weekend so much more . You put in the time and effort here . The training is the key . The run is the reward . Any way at all that we can help out and know will be here for you .
