Now , john and Alicia , I have to ask you guys a question . Have you reached out to our friends at Magic Bound to book a trip in order to stage , protest and chain yourself to dinosaur based on the ? News that came out of Destination D23 this past weekend . No , but maybe we should .
I am very upset about that .
Me too , john , my favorite ride . I like Indiana Jones , but it's not the same . I know the whole like every single word to the dinosaur , and I go on it multiple times , over and , over and over again , and I just I'm going to miss it so much .
In case our friends aren't sure what you're talking about , Greg , more details .
Sure . So this past weekend , every other year , when the D23 Expo doesn't happen , there's a smaller version of it at Disney World called Destination D23 .
And they still do like a little parks panel and everything like that , and they announced some things like the Figment Meeting Greet , that opened this past weekend they talked about apparently we're getting Test Track 3.0 . I saw that . But the real , real big news that came out of that is that they updated the Blue Sky plan for Dinoland .
So , if you remember , from D23 last summer , they said it was going to be Zootopia and Moana . Well , that plan is now changing . It looks like it's going to be in Kanto , with the possibility of Coco , even though they really didn't bring it up .
But the thing that they like really showed really well is that essentially , I think the dinosaur ride is going to go away and get transformed into the Indiana Jones ride , because it is the exact same ride , vehicle and ride layout between dinosaur and Indiana Jones on Disneyland .
So , yeah , so it's one of those things where I think we're going to see a big update at some point . Again , they just said it was updated Blue Sky , but I mean , this was a lot more detailed than what they showed last summer .
So for those of you that , like the Boneyard and Triceratops , spin and Dinosaur , I'd make sure you hit those in your next couple of trips .
Yeah yeah , we've kind of known , or suspected anyway , that things were going away there for quite a while . All right , thanks , greg . Hey , friends , let's look at where we are . Wine and Dine weekend now , seven weeks away . We're getting there . The long run this week , week 11 of the training plan , is four miles with a magic mile .
Remember that magic mile is included in your four miles , so it's not four plus one , it's four with a magic mile . My recommendation is a very slow first mile , very slow , then your magic mile , then a short break and then finish out those last two at whatever pace is comfortable for you .
Marathon weekend training marathon weekend now , 111 days away , still in triple figures , but again , we're getting there . If you're doing a challenge , it's a two day training this long weekend . Four miles followed by 13 . Again , typically the training plan will tell you to walk the four miles . We talked about this before .
I think walking is a good idea when you have these back to backs , just be cool . Walk the four and then the 13 is your long training run . There was a question floating on Facebook , a good question from folks first time through .
Again , you have to remember I have to remember not everybody's done this before that the training plans definitely say walk for that first event , the shorter event , then sometimes on the next event it says walk , run and sometimes it either says nothing or just says run . There's never a running event on a Jeff Galloway training that is not run , walk run .
It's always going to be there , no matter the distance . It's always going to be on walk intervals . 10k training has also started for marathon weekend . If you're doing the 10K you'll want to look into that . Tell you what else started this week Disneyland training If you're running out at Disneyland you've got a three mile race . It's three mile training run .
It is now 17 weeks away .
I got to say it seems absolutely mind blowing To me . Marathon weekend training felt like it just started last week . I hear you . I think that for everyone doing marathon goofy or dopey , you're already up to a half marathon now . The double up already is just really goes to show how time flies .
To me we are getting into the hard part of the training . There's all sorts of energy and excitement in the beginning and the miles aren't that high . We're in the middle now where the miles are starting to build and we can't see the end . We're starting to do some double ups . If you're doing dopey , pretty soon you'll be doing some triple ups . It's tough .
It's still hot in parts of the country .
It's still hot down here . That's what I was going to say , yep .
Yeah , yeah . This is the time that's going to test your endurance . You're going to test your mental fortitude , your mental toughness . This is the hard part of it . We get towards November , December . Things start cooling off . Yeah , the miles are bigger , but they're a little more spread out in the times that you have to do them .
You've got the end in sight too . All right , Suck it up . This is the tough part of the training , but the training is , as we say almost every week , just about everything . Let's see Apologies and alibis . I wanted to just comment that our friend Abel confirmed that . Yes , Petaluma was at one time home to the arm wrestling championships of the world .
It is no longer , because a fellow who found that it apparently passed away and when he did it moved somewhere else . Since there's no wide world of sports on Saturday or Sunday , whatever it was , I don't know where it is anymore .
The ESPN 8 , the Ocho . The Ocho yeah .
It could be , John . You had a comment for apologies and alibis .
Last week I got my Great Lakes mixed up . I said Lake Erie when I should have been saying Lake Michigan . How dare you , John . Well , it's so close to us , right .
Yeah , yeah , all right , we're going to forgive you . Talk training for a minute . We got any training things to talk about ? Gang , I do , but I'm going to wait . Alicia , you had a race this weekend .
I did . My training's been going really well and I had a race that I decided to sign up for Day , of which I've never done before , but I've done the race in previous years . I did a 10-miler and it went really well . I just went out and I was going to do race pace and then I decided , oh , halfway through I can hit a time goal . And I made it .
I'm very proud of myself .
Good for you . I think it's a great way to do it . It's a great lesson there . Go out easy and if you feel great , go for it . Absolutely . Much better than going out hard and going . Oh jeez , I think I can fit . I have a story about that , but I'll again . I'll get to it in a minute . John , how's the knee holding up ?
Knee's holding up pretty good . I ran today . No pain in the knee . Oh , it's good . So that's a good thing , I'm not pushing it . No , you shouldn't be . I'm doing a really weird interval . I'm doing 20 seconds run , a minute 40 walk , Then the last mile . I'll wait until the buzzer goes all the way through , then start walking . So they get 25 and 135 .
I'll slowly move it back up . I'm not going to push it out too far .
quick , Baby steps , yeah , Baby steps , John . You got to keep that . You got to keep it in the back of your mind . You can't get it all back at once . It's going to come back very slowly , Just accept that . But you're doing great man .
Yeah , the one thing I did do is I did train actually right up to the day before my surgery , so that helped . Huh yeah , I got like six miles , seven miles , my longest run before surgery . So , I figured I got some kind of base and hopefully you know it'll come back quick enough .
John , you're a runner , it'll come back . It'll come back , just be patient . You can do this we're proud of you , yeah .
I got to say I know that John's recovery is going really , really well because this past weekend and we'll get into this once we get into the race report but , bob , I just want to let you know John was able to successfully carry four desserts back from the dessert table at the Burden Hand Post Race Picnic .
Only four .
Only four , but I mean it's . You know , he was steady with them and there was no knee buckling and he successfully delivered all those desserts to the table . So I would say that is an improvement in John's progress .
And you forgot the four cups of lemonade and ice cream .
That's very true .
Oh , there you go .
Did not spill a drop . There's a challenge .
There you go . I'm proud of you , john . That's good . I'm glad you know you're recovering All right . I'm going to share my training story from this weekend because this is a lesson learned and I want to share it with you . And the moral of this story up front is don't be like Bob . I had three mile walk on Friday , 12 mile walk run on Saturday .
Three mile walk , that's fine . I just went out and did it , had no trouble . Came home Headed out , but I still warm here in Florida it's not as blazing hot as it's been , but it was still quite warm . 12 miles . I leave the house at oh I don't know about 6 am and I take nothing with me . Dumb , dumb , dumb . You all can tell me how dumb I am .
If you want to , it's all right , it won't hurt my feelings . The plan was because it's been a while since I've done these distances . The plan was on this one walk three miles , run walk seven and then walk the last two for total 12 . Walk three miles , no problem . Kept up a pretty nice pace , turned around , started my run walk 30-30 . No problem at first .
Now I had nothing with me , but I knew that the park that I was going to be going through had a water fountain . However , I didn't hit that until about five miles total . I got that . I got the first mile or two of the run walk in pretty well . Mile three was okay .
Mile four started feeling not so good , mile five felt awful and when I finished mile five I had to come to a dead stop . I stopped . There was a fence . I leaned over the fence , afraid that I might I'll use the expression lose my lunch . But I hadn't had lunch yet . In fact I had nothing before I left . Then you had my customary cup of coffee .
My stomach was just cramping that badly . It felt that bad , not smart kids . I got back to the water fountain , got some more water . I'm still walking and I'm thinking I can call my wife and Becky will come get me . But two things went through my mind .
Number one I Could hear Chris Twig's voice saying on the long runs , it doesn't matter how slow you go , you can walk the whole thing . I Thought , okay , I can probably walk , I've only got a little over four miles to get back to the house . And and I also started thinking I See people posting these problems all the time . And what do I always say ?
I always say to you look , you're doing great , keep it up , keep trying , do the best you can to finish . So how could I not do that ? If I'm here telling you to do it , how could I not do it ? So I did I . I actually had to stop a couple times just to stop hands on your knees a couple of breaths , 30 seconds a minute .
Keep walking the last couple miles . I was walking 17 minute miles . You guys who know me know that's really slow , but I did finish it . Not smart , golly , don't , don't do that . I'm not . I'm not doing it again . Don't you do it at all . I hope you can learn something from me .
I came home and I ordered a , a vest that will I can carry water bottles with , so I can carry not necessarily just water , but so that I can carry some kind of an electrolyte drink . Then I do have some that I like and Some kind of nutrition I've . I've got to stop trying to do this . That's just not smart .
All right , that's my story and I'm sticking to it and that's the way it was for me and I hope that it'll help you out . Friends , let's visit with our guests for the week .
Friends , we always have a good time with the guests on the rise and month podcast this week , no exception Friends that have been friends of Hours for oh golly a couple years now , people who I miss because I haven't seen them since last April , and I am so excited To welcome them to the podcast .
Welcome , kristen hey , good to be here again .
Pamela .
Hey , everybody happy to be here too and Margaret hello , hello , so excited to join rise and run , friends .
These are our . These ladies are our council of costumes .
I feel like there should be some like trumpet .
Bandfare or something like that . There should be great here .
I can do one ready . Oh , there you go I .
Thought about contacting jar to see if it's too late . Not if you're not familiar , if you're relatively new to the podcast , the council of costumes . We started them last year . There's a big hit , a fun group . If you know these young ladies , you know that they go all out on their costumes .
They're a joy to see , to be with and and we just want to pick their brains a little bit and see if they can help us with ideas for costumes or just . We'll just talk for the next 30 , 40 minutes . We'll just talk costumes in general for the upcoming run Disney season .
Let me start here , and Kristen , you were talking with us just a little bit before we started . You know we had this Rules . It wasn't really a change , it was a note put out saying here's an update and it kind of got some folks upset . But I think you have some current information on that .
I do , I do it's like . It's like run Disney knew that I was coming on this podcast tonight and they were like here . Here's the email that you have been waiting for , so . I'm glad I know a lot of us had emailed in , just like they had Encourages to do with questions about you know what , what is now acceptable , what is not .
And there were a couple emails that were going around with pictures and they were being told well , that's not acceptable . But obviously had been on a course before . So we were like , well , what are we gonna do ? So my , my thought process was I'm not gonna ask them about particular costumes per se .
I want them to explain themselves in the wording that they chose , because I could tell from reading it it was not coming from a runner , because a runner knows that layers layers to a runner mean different things than layers to the general population . Right , so that was my . That was my question . I was like , can you , can you clarify what you mean by that ?
Because you know , when it's cold , when we , you know Something on me . Remember the actual frozen 5k princess of whatever year that was ? You know I said your term . Layers actually eliminates the ability to like dress for warmth and then , right , we shed those and then they get donated to the you know shelters and whatnot . So is that not okay anymore ?
Are we not doing that ? Because that's considered a layer and she finds she whoever this person is who's running the account ? Finally answered me back and this is what she said . We are pleased to inform you that you are able to wear jackets and throwaway layers . Please know that any adjustments or alterations to the costume must remain within our guidelines .
These are available under the race policy section of your run Disney event . If a costume is questionable or offensive to others , disney reserves the right to either have you change into something more appropriate or we will remove you from the event . So which now , looking back , I Don't know that this originated out of run Disney .
When it came out , I think it was just them kind of streamlining their verbiage , because the guidelines that were released ended up , I found out , were the same guidelines that they released for Mickey's not so scary party Like you go into that event information and see it verbatim , even down to like .
The tutu explanation is Exact same in the party guide that it is on that email that we received . So I think overall it was a maybe a mild overreaction .
Yeah now that we've seen what has been allowed at Mickey's , not so scary now , do I think showing up in a giant madam layout a table is the best of ideas , maybe not maybe not you do , I was gonna bring that up , kristen , because when you posted that the other week I was like , you know that was just such a classic example of like if they're gonna allow
this to be entered into the Magic Kingdom . Yeah with a lot more people than are at a run Disney race , then I think we're gonna be okay .
And the other thing , too , is that the , the pictures that they were using on the event , you know , media and whatnot , technically , technically aren't supposed to be allowed .
So that's another thing that I was like this is not coming from them .
This is coming from higher up than them and they're just trying to make sure everyone is generally on the same page . And , honestly , I don't know of many costumes that I saw this past season because I was at every race , every race weekend . There were maybe one or two that I would have been like .
I don't know about that and it wasn't for the safety of other people , it was the safety of the runner wearing it . So I think , overall , we're , we're okay .
I think we're okay too .
So , getting back to your , should I wear a table costume ? There is a gentleman named James that actually did send in a picture of him because he is the table costume guy . Every has has like a hoop underneath it . Yes , the table table and he was told he cannot wear that going forward .
Oh and .
I don't know if it's because his costumes look like they almost touch the ground . So it's that full length problem or is it the hoop ?
Yeah underneath .
So some people and then some people like you're saying , have sent in pictures that initially they said no , you can't wear it . And then they got a second email saying we've reevaluated and said , yes , those are okay to wear it .
So I don't know if we're gonna , how much we're gonna get into Like what's allowed and what's not allowed , but I did email run Disney today and they responded right away , but it was pretty much a Generic response . Thank you for your interest in asking about costumes . This is what it is .
I was asking can you show me a photo of something that's not allowed and and that's not something that they are responding to at this ? Okay .
So I also asked them and this they did not respond to this in the email that if it's a layered costume , so I was thinking of , like my cone that I wore during springtime . Yeah or my Mike was out ski costume . If , if I can like , take that off and you can inspect it Just to see that there's nothing in it . I'm not hiding anything , I'm not trying to .
You know , bring in a small child , but underneath it you know ? Would that be fine ? Would that be okay ? I understand that I'm subject to more . You know screenings , security screening but I'm willing to do that if you'll let me wear the costume . And they didn't respond to that . So I think that's a valid question to to hopefully someone will answer .
Is that , if it's layered , layered like that , and it's removable and you get to look to see that there's nothing hiding in it , why can't we just wear that ?
Margaret , one thing I hope does happen to it . Two of the costumes I remember most from last year are the guitar and the Blockbuster video case . Right , I don't know if they're going to be good to go or not .
Yeah , those are very questionable . Now , with the guitar I covered the front and I covered the side and the cover at the back , so the sides were still exposed . So that's still a questionable item . I Was actually ready last year .
That was like really cutting edge on things we're really ready to like okay , if I need to just carry the guitar , I will , if so but , it was well received last year . I was hoping that it will be well received this year for similar type costumes . And .
I'm just covering the front and the back with some sort of type of strap over your shoulders , because there's a lot of different variations of those they were fun .
Mm-hmm , christian , you had a guitar tune out . I think about it .
Yeah , I did . Yeah , but mine was just on the front . Yeah , margaret was was . Yeah , oh , she all did me . Oh , I'm not , we're not playing that game time , but literally inside stew because she's , she was way taller than me in that whole thing .
So they were both great .
They were , they were both outstanding that one did tower a bit too so , and then I had my head projected through the circle of the guitar , where I saw some variations , where it was like the top of the Guitar , the head , the face part of it as well too . Yeah , so there's that then .
On the blockbuster one , I think that one would probably really not be allowed because that covered three parts of my body , so I only had yeah . I'd expose , because I was really wanting to keep the spine with it .
But again , there is also the variation of you just carry it in the front of you , so you strap it up somehow to the front of you , or you just have Some paddles that you could hold it from swell to . There's also this variation .
Then then , thinking forward on the table side since you know we we have Alice's Tea Party coming up Instead of having a table that goes around you , how about you just have a table that slightly goes in front of you , and then you make sure that the table cover is sheer so that you're not concealing anything Underneath that .
So I've had to play around a little bit with my initial ideas and thankfully that email caught me before I had gotten too deep into my projects .
Yeah , that's a good point . Yeah , yeah .
I'm glad of that and I will say in terms of you know what is going to be loud and not allowed and you know , are the costume police gonna be out ? You know , you know the quote unquote costume police is not a new thing , right that they have always been there .
And like one of the examples that I do not know the gentleman's name , I just know he's part of of Jar Ox and spoons group , but when they did the Mario Kart , I think was for it was either wine and dying or marathon weekend 5k . You know a lot of them had Inflate .
You know the inflatable costumes , kind of like how Ali had her shark and everything right right . I don't know if she'd be able to get away with a shark anymore , but apparently in their gang , one of their groups , costumes was considered Too large or not appropriate for the race and they were asked to take it off .
So and again and that was last race season . So , again , I think you know Even though nothing changed , it's just being brought to light is you know ? There have always been people that are looking out for everyone's safety and security in terms of the races , in relation to costumes . So again , really , I don't think much is going to change .
Just know that they've always been there and they'll probably continue to be there .
No , greg , I agree , I think you know and I put this in my post on Instagram , but when I did that series of stories about it that you know , at the end of the day , they're not trying to take away our ability to have fun on the course , they're not out to you know , be you know , make us regret that we paid the money to do this .
They're just going to be Enforcing rules that they were told to enforce . So and I said this in my story too like if I see anybody that I know that is mistreating a cast member who is telling them to either take off the costume or whatnot on a race morning , I will southern mom ear lobe grab . All the way to the parking lot . Because you do not .
You do not get to take out your Frustration what not ? On a cast member who was just simply doing their job .
I agree a hundred percent , and I don't want to see that anyway .
Don't make me turn this 5k around .
I'll give you something to cry about .
So I mean just getting back to it for sure , I know that they were working on safety . So our buddy DW , who wears big , huge gowns , I mean , if they think his dress is too big , they pulled him aside with a ton of safety pins and they got under his dress .
Okay ended up shorter and you know , and was able to still run the race because they think he looks awesome too . So , yeah , yeah , but Building on what Kristen said , I agree completely . If so , if someone asks you to modify or do something to your costume , give them grace . I mean , yeah , a hundred percent .
But I , my gut feeling is , where would you plan to wear but have another option underneath to change into ? They're gonna be okay to run in and just be like , oh okay , this isn't gonna be okay , cuz I think wine and dine is gonna be our learning weekend for everybody for sure .
So I think they might let a little bit slide this time and they might say okay , next time you can't , you know , do this or that . Yeah , we'll see further . So I think in general , most people are going to be okay .
And I would say that whatever ideas you have and whatever you want to do , more than likely you can still do it . You just need to adjust the way that you go about doing it . So just getting a little bit more creative with the way you do it .
And if you know that something's kind of treading on the line of the rules , then , like Pamela said , have an idea of how can I adjust this on the spot Take it off , carry it , pin it up , whatever the case might be , or have a different outfit , like Kristen said , just in case . But I think that our ideas we could still flow with them .
Let's just adjust them a little bit very good , mark , and I think the idea of being creative is a great transition From it's good discussion . We , we think we've got this underhand under control . We'll find out , but I don't think it's anything to fret about . I think we're going to be okay . But let's move on . Let's talk about , talk about ideas .
Let's talk about Wine and Dine weekend and maybe a little bit about marathon weekend and some ideas that are running around in your heads for costumes . Maybe not necessarily for you you don't keep no spoilers if you don't want to but the themes what kind of costume ideas do we have ? Margaret , you want to kick that off ?
Oh , sure I alluded to a tea party . So for Alice in Wonderland there may be tea party table going around with Alice at the head of the table . For the 10k that is Beauty and the Beast themed .
I have this whole idea of Doing Mrs Potts that I've never done before , but as she's the one that's invited to the ball , so , she's all dressed up and decked out to go to the ball . That's where it probably gets a little bit vague with some of the rules , disney , because you know they are saying not too many layers .
So if you want to do ball gown type , you have to maybe be a little careful on that end . But I think regular dresses should be , should be okay , I would certainly hope so . Yeah , and then for the half with the incanto team theme . I Would love to do Isabella with her on the swing . Oh . Flower swing mm-hmm neat , neat .
And Again , I'm not asking you don't have to give away secrets here , kristen , I'll come to you next . But just ideas , just thoughts . I mean I've got some too , kristen . Any ideas for this weekend ? This the wine and dine weekend .
So I'm only , I'm not I shouldn't say I'm only I am Choosing . I'm choosing to dominate the 5k only that weekend , and you can catch me handing out medals for the 10k and the half .
But Will you be a costume for ?
that I don't think they're gonna . I think we . But if I can get away with , like you know , very poofy skirt and whatnot , with that volunteer shirt and some amazing ears and , of course , my bling down eyelashes , I'm doing that or I wouldn't recognize you otherwise the right right . Well , I probably would , but that's . But no for the 5k .
I am part of a group and we are themed after a Particular ride in Disneyland that matches the theme of the weekend .
So very good , I'll leave it at that , because I'm not that group and but anyway it's gonna be upset . Ideas are cool , Whatever ideas . You can throw out other ideas too .
You were saying you know ideas , and that's something too For Disneyland , because I'm not doing marathon weekend , I'm choosing to do Disneyland instead . Okay , and so for that one , think about one of the costumes that we're batting around , or we actually need to finalize .
it coming up really soon is looking at the different rides in Disneyland , the different opening day rides , and doing costumes based off of the rides , because the theming is the same , essentially the same as it is for for marathon weekend , where it's the fab 5 , it's just the characters . It's really not , you know , movie specific .
So , with this being the first race back to Disneyland in several years , my first race to ever run in Disneyland , we were thinking more broad , with the different , the different rides that we Potentially pending course might get to run by , and I think that would be so cool . Yeah , yeah , yeah to do that so that'll be fun .
That'll be fun , Pamela . What are you thinking for wine and dine and marathon ?
Well , I always believe , just do whatever you want .
Yeah , there you go . That's cuz you're , that's cuz you're a free spirit young lady .
That's right . So wine and dine weekend . I mean when they came out with Alice , I mean we didn't really need any other themes other than there are so Many cool things that you can do from Alice . You can . I mean I'm in a group that's like the card guard , we're gonna I , I mean you can be Alice . I mean Alice is so cool .
I could be the mad hatter , you can be . You can be the flowers , you can be the the little Caterpillar . I mean there's so many fun things . So I'm actually right now . Currently I'm going to be some kind of character from Alice for all three of my races .
All right , well , that's . I think that's cool , yeah , and then but I you know .
But then I look at marathon weekend and I'm like Anything goes . I feel like I love classics . I love just all kinds of Mickey mini , whatever variations of those that you want to be . I'm to be honest , I'm gonna be a Marvel character for one of them . So I . Specifically a Guardians of the Galaxy type character . So I think you know you've got in canto .
I mean there's so many things remain . Canto to with the colors and the sisters and the families and the house . Just be the house . Yeah , there's .
That . May that may be a little tough with the new guidelines , but we'll see that somebody will try . Yeah , and you know you can . Who knows you can give it a shot , margaret , go ahead and for general ideas , I would say for wine and dine .
Let's not forget the theme of the whole weekend , every weekend is food and wine . I've ever , just so . That route is always amazing and I love doing that . If it wasn't because I love the Individual race themes this year , I would do something like that One year , my whole family , we dressed up as breakfast items and . The next year .
My husband and I dressed up as lunch items and I was hoping to do dinner , but I really loved all the things , so I will reserve that for some other time . But don't forget about all that .
See that in the future .
Yeah , and then also for marathon weekend . This year the theme is like dreamy , so thinking of things that relate to like , dreamy characters or like , for example , you have Minnie Mouse and the red dream carpet at Hollywood Studios , so something along those lines .
And for Disneyland the theme is the main characters , but the artwork that they gave us was like very 375 , so something kind of vintage , retro with the characters would be fun too .
I'm sticking more , so trying to do something very Disneyland , since I I live by Disney World , so I get to do a lot of these races and it's my first time going there , so I'm trying to pick something specific to that .
But don't forget , there's there's parades , so you might see some characters from like their parades or the rides , like Kristen said as well too . So something along those lines . And also , the big thing that Disney Disneyland has that we don't have is Adventure campus . So Kamal said that would be a great opportunity to do Marvel there .
So , or here , I mean , and you can do it anywhere you don't have to see but that's something that's specific to Disneyland .
We've definitely talked a lot of themes tonight and , grant , this could be a blessing or a curse , as it relates to Marathon weekend and also Disneyland weekend is , in theory , you know , I think everyone was so hyper focused last year on marathon weekend because it was , you know , 30th anniversary , you know throwing back to , you know , the 90s , and I think
everyone wanted to Really embrace that . But the fact that there's no central Theme outside of the fab 5 and the cool like track art artwork , it really leaves the door open to so much interpretation . So it's one of those things where , okay , you know it could make things easier for you because , in theory , you could pick whatever you want .
You know , from , you know , being a classic character to being , you know , figment , who trips out of the rainbow tunnel , you know , twice in one day . I don't like that , or you know .
But then , conversely , though , because there's no central theme tied to it and having so many ideas , I know that it can Maybe seem daunting or overwhelming to to pick a theme , but it's one of those things where , if you have an idea , stick with your gut and go for it , because , especially for those two weekends , really anything goes and it really can be
applied to any weekend , but obviously with the themes , though it does make it a little bit easier for you , it does now I'm gonna back up just a second because I'm guilty .
I think a lot of us who have done multiple Disney events Are guilty of forgetting that we've got folks out there who have never done this before and they're listening to all this costume Talking going oh my goodness , I haven't thought I have to do this .
I have to know , you don't , you don't , I've run , I'm closing in on 50 Disney races I , I wore , I've worn a costume for two and sometimes a t-shirt , if you want for three . So no you , but they're an epic .
Two costumes though , bob . I mean they , they were , they're epic beyond epic .
They were well received . But Another point and thank you , thank you for that and thanks for leading into another point , and this is one that our friend Brittany makes a lot is that the beauty of a really good costume Is that it brings joy to other people and you can see it . You can see it in their faces .
I , these three women here who they know , they know how many people just go oh , that's wonderful , that's great . Golly , I do it for him , but it's so . It brings joy to other folks .
Just yes , when Tara and I wore the VHS boxes marathon weekend , because you know they opened and At one point Tara would run up to people , it took me a minute to do it because I was like you can't say that like because she run up to somebody . But have you ever been flashed at Disney ?
And she'd open that box and show that we have and the be kind of rewind sticker and they would just erupt and laughter . I don't know , but we should have flashed you at marathon weekend , bob . We should have done it . No , like that . That . The bruise , margaret , I don't know if yours left a bruise on your shoulder , but our whoo mind did oh boy .
But that was totally worth it for the amount of joy that was sparked Simply by wearing the cool costume and people commenting on it . That's . The other thing is that , as much as I love to wear the really fun costumes , I love Complementing other people on theirs . Yeah because it's such a great way to see just how stinking creative we all can be .
It is , and I and I love the reactions . I do it . It makes it all worthwhile . I I've told this story and I will tell it again .
A Very large old man walks out with wings and a blonde wig , dressed like Tinkerbell , feels self-conscious as heck for all of about 20 seconds and Then sees the reaction from everybody and go , yeah , this is gonna be fun and it was so that's when tinker Bob was born . And he , or is it she ?
I'm not sure We'll be back because , golly , we got a race just made for it .
It's not till the spring , but the real question I need to know , bob , is are you going to correct your costume ? Mm-hmm and make sure that you actually have the tinkerbell wig this time .
Yes , cinderella .
Okay , all right Again , hard-hitting questions here with the people need to know . Yeah , it is .
I didn't realize it was the wrong wig .
Yeah , I had a blue ribbon . It was definitely a Cinderella wig . Becky bought it . I couldn't believe that it fit for crying out loud . I got a big old pumpkin for a head and I thought we're gonna have to make adjustments to it and sew it back together . It fit . It's like I'm looking to be the mad hatter In wine and dine weekend . I gotta find a hat .
I wear a dagum size eight . It's tough so which which segues me to something else again . Folks who are listening . I've never done this before . Where do you get your stuff ?
Well , a lot of my stuff I piece together and craft on my own . I'm not really much of a seamstress , I don't .
I had no basic sewing , so I kind of will just adjust certain things or add tool or lace or trim or ribbons to things just to make it look , give it the look that I'm going for , or just piecing different things together that you could just find at regular stores . So just always keeping an eye out for what could work for your idea .
Once you have your idea , and Just working on it it's it's almost like a challenge too , because there's the challenge of the mileage , of the , the race itself , but then there's also the challenge of constructing these Costumes , these race outfits . So that's , that's just all part of the fun .
Yeah , yeah . How about you ? Where do you get your stuff ?
So it's a good combination of things . I mean , etsy has a lot of great makers . There's been people I've been supporting for years that I still buy from . And then I Mean , honestly , amazon . I'll . I'll just type in I mean we're , we're so excited that dapper days is happening during springtime , surprise . Well , we have a group .
We've already ordered all of our pieces because we like well , on Amazon , we get this skirt , we get this top , we get this scarf , we can get these saddle shoes , we can get this , you know , and it's like it's here the next day . So Piecing together pieces like that .
And then also I have a very amazing friend , tracy , who it just her brain is constantly thinking of new things and new ways to make some sort of costume . So she's , she's our little clean , clean maker . She makes all of our little Hats . I mean , look at this seriously . I know nobody else can see this .
No , you have to hold it up to the microphone . It works . We've tried it before . Hold up to the microphone . People can see this . The lovely red ribbons and the polka dot ribbons a fascinator with cards feathers .
And she made Individual ones for every single person in our group . I mean , she's like she thinks she's a header now , like this is All right . Yeah , I know .
Tracy . Yeah , that's good for her . Of course , you got a Dallas working stuff on that side of the fence too , so that's cool , nido . Kristen , anything to add as to where you get your stuff ?
so most of my stuff comes from the Zon Amazon , but also the Zon .
I've never heard that , honestly God , I've never heard that .
The Zon , but then also my friend Lisa , who owns top stitch couture . She's the one that did most of my skirts Last season and she's the one that did that amazing Skirt that I wore for the 10-myler to wrap up the , the perfect season . It had a panel , a piece of every costume .
I had worn the entire season in that skirt and then it I wore it on the last race to represent all 13 races to make the perfect season . But , honestly , amazon really the other one that I use a lot to , or have started using a lot , I should say is Halloween calm . Okay , afraid of the Halloween costume Type stores .
Granted , you're not gonna get , you're not gonna get the quality to make it through a half or a full . But a 5k or even the 10k , you can get some really good costume options from From a place like that . So my , my Jasmine from the Princess 5k this past year was from Halloween costumes calm .
So it was like a full full on Jasmine , like Disney license the whole nine yards . So that's always an option too . And I think that one was Gosh , it was under $50 for it and it was , you know , had the headband and we won't talk about the wig because I ended up looking Like a dark-headed founding father . The way the curls , and it was .
I was like no , no , we're gonna be a blonde Jasmine .
Okay , that I remember . I didn't remember the dark-haired part , I must the wig .
Well , that was because that wig never , never saw the light of day never made it on . I put it on and I showed my husband and he was like where's your little like penny flute and there's it to by land , and one if I see like what are you doing ?
I got , you know yeah , spirit of 76 .
Really .
There you go . I don't know what it would be appropriate for , but that's a great three-person outfit , the spirit of 76 you need to drum mm-hmm .
A fight from the flag that was one thing I was gonna say too , is If you have an idea that isn't necessarily Disney , make it Disney . So my example for this totally gives away what we're doing for princess . I'm not gonna do it .
But if you have an organization that you really like or I know there was like a Girl Scout group last princess , we did the cheerleaders like you don't have to , it doesn't have to be , doesn't have to be directly from the movie .
It can be a , you know , modern group or Club if you will , but then you put your Disney spin on it and I guarantee you You're , you will be around like-minded people who , once they see you , they're gonna be like I get it . I totally get it , because no one , no one , questioned who we were when we were princesses .
I mean the princess cheerleaders and flight attendants and that like they're like yep , I got it , I got it . So it's tying to I'd bringing two ideas together to make a really original costume outstanding .
Okay , nothing new on race day . Do you train in your costumes , margaret ? Do you train in your costume ? I ?
train in a good amount of them , at least for a run or two .
But you have to say some of my like bulky ones , like I had a bulky Cinderella gown one year but I actually did instead was I wore it on a day that I knew had to do like some Organization around the house and climbing up and down the step ladder , up and down the stairs Just to get a feel for how it was gonna feel on me doing active stuff as opposed
to taking it down the street . But head pieces .
I do try to at least go on one run with them , even if it's a short run , just so you get an idea of how it's gonna either bounce on your head stay secure , not if you need to add up pins to it or whatever the case might be , if it's gonna be too heavy , or sometimes it could be too light and just kind of fly off .
So that way , if you have that under control beforehand , that really helps too .
Or make you look like a colonial boy . Not there's anything wrong with that there's nothing wrong with that , unless that's not what you're going for .
Other than that , kristen , do you train in your costume ?
Not Not full costume , like like what she was saying . I I will always train or I always will get variations , like in color in the shorts that I'm used to wearing , like the biker shorts right . So that that I know I will have no problem with , like the , the Jasmine , for example .
I did not train in that because I knew I was gonna be walking that 5k because of my injury , so didn't even train , train it for that one at all . Obviously , the VHS box did not take that around the neighborhood . I'm sure I would have gotten , like you know , called for , like a wellness check or something she's . She's finally lost it .
She's wearing a giant four-foot VHS box running around the neighborhood . So but I will , I will train in or test run pieces of them , especially the accessories , especially if I'm gonna be holding a lot of things , because you don't want that race to be the first time that you practice juggling pom poms or a lamp or Tea cups or whatever .
You want to make sure that you have a good grasp , literally on on those accessories .
Speaking of pom poms , pamela , I know you've used pom poms before you train in your outfits .
I'm absolutely not , you sure I ?
figure .
I can do anything for 13 miles so I I . War wigs for the first time I had ever put them on my head for wine and dine two years ago and I've never looked back . I wear wigs . I don't pin them , I just they just stay on . I don't know , I've just gotten very lucky . I've run with a suitcase . I've run , but I'm like , well , why would I practice ?
Because it's gonna be annoying and if I don't like it I'll just throw it away . Well , I have a whole 10 miles with it and it was fine . So I kind of give my the okay , like if I have to get rid of it , I will . But I love how photos look with props , so I'm willing to carry umbrellas and you know , parasols and the .
I Mean I wore that really hot costume or basically it was boo as a monster and it was like wearing a sleeping bag . Did I practice ? No , I got it like when I got here and I ran with ice packs in it and I was fine .
Oh , wow .
Yeah , I don't know . I'd always feel like I you can do anything for a short amount of time , as Long as again , like what Kristen was saying , I always wear the same shorts underneath . I always look same under under garments that .
I know the shape .
Yeah , that's as long as you're wearing the and the shoes and the socks and all that kind of stuff . That stuff I don't mess with . I mean , that's the stuff that I always wear , but the costume pieces I don't know . I guess I'm a little out there .
Okay , you mentioned something the heat Disney can be 30 degrees on marathon weekend . It could be 100 degrees on marathon weekend . Do you guys take into consideration the heat or the weather for your costume designs , or what should you do If you're gonna plan a costume that might be a little elaborate for hot or cold weather ?
Yeah , I always have a Marathon . Weekend is a great example of this , as is princess . Actually , wine and Dine can be too , because it was rainy to wine and dine to go like it poured down rain you always want to have a cold weather option To go like underneath it .
So , for example , when we did I was in the group that did the princess cheerleaders we all had agreed upon bringing with us a white long sleeve Under thing to go , obviously , underneath our cheer tops , because that way if it was cold we would all still match . But it it got .
It got the the costume accomplished because it looks like what a cheerleader would wear In cold weather and also kept us warm . So . So always having those little small things available to tweak or add on is Always a good idea and a lot of times it's just as simple as a long sleeve T-shirt .
So the the wine and dine when it was villains theme , I remember that was the one that it poured down rain , the 5k and the 10k . That was when Teresa and I were the poison apples for the 5k and then I was captain hook . She was tick , tock , crock and Tara was mr Sme for the 10 and I was in my raincoat the whole time .
Like , that Captain hook costume really never got the attention it deserved because it was beautiful , because it was hiding under a rain jacket the whole time , but that the the half , it was really cold .
Do you remember that in the morning it was really cold , so I had on a blue because I was Hades , I had on a blue long sleeve and then , when we got to animal kingdom , we pulled off into one of the bathrooms and shed that bottom layer and Came back out and we were like weather appropriate , but we were still dressed as our character .
So , just having that flexibility of you know , prepare something that still matches your costume . So obviously , hades would not roll out in like a neon pink , unlike long sleeve shirt . That would totally mess with the character . But knowing , knowing that there's flexibility within your , your costume and your character to accommodate for that .
Another thing that that we used when it was really cold were those hand warmers and and throw away gloves , like when it gets to be wintertime , which in Texas I think is supposed to happen sometime in the next year .
It might turn winter , but you can start getting like cheapo gloves at , even like Dollar Tree or anything like that , putting those on and then putting those hand warmers in them . I know some people put them in their shoes . Just be careful that you don't burn your feet when you do that .
So there's , there's small things that you can do to make your your costumes , whether appropriate , but still maintain the integrity of the character that you're trying to be , and Speaking of you know being appropriate in terms of your costume .
You know , the other thing you'll notice , especially for marathon weekend , is you also do have to be very smart about how elaborate your costume is and and and , in turn , respect the distance that you're running that costume in . I mean , obviously , you know marathon weekend is a perfect example .
You know , you'll see everyone go all out for the 5k and then by the time you're hitting , half marathon to the marathon , you know sure there's slight embellishments here or there , because you're gonna be in that thing for a really long time .
And you know , as we know , during marathon weekend , once you hit Animal Kingdom and beyond , if you got something bulky on you , that Sun is just gonna destroy you and get you hot . And you know You're still several miles away from the ice at Blizzard Beach . So be mindful of the elaborateness of your costume based on the distance that you're running .
Yeah , yeah , good advice , good advice . Let me ask this , and I think maybe we'll wrap it up here in a minute Kristen , pamela , margaret , you've had some wonderful costumes and if I was going to answer this question , I'm sure I would pick One that each of you has worn at some time . But what's your favorite costume ?
Either that you've worn or or that you've seen , and I'm not going to make you stick with one . If you've got a couple you want to talk about , that's great . But , pamela , why don't you go first ?
Um , I would say I loved my Miss Piggy costume from the half marathon a good one this year because I was the most creative as far as Reusing pieces that I wore in other costumes . So the long Gloves were from a Cinderella costume , the skirt was like Remi , the red to he , you know , looked like that . I got this .
The the first stole from , you know , just Amazon . The wig , I wore the fake eyelashes , I don't know . I had pig ears , I don't know it . To me it was my favorite costume , for sure .
Um , and that's a good . That's a good character anyway .
Yeah , I love this biggie Of course , who doesn't ?
I know ?
And I mean my favorite group costume was the one we did last year for the 5k the Coco Seemed just because of the colors . I mean just I love the movie Coco and I loved all the colors in our tutus and our glow-in-the-dark Skeleton tops and our floral pieces . It's just my favorite . Plus , it's my favorite finish line , finish line pitcher .
I just I love that group picture .
Awesome , margaret . What about you , oh ?
Oh , geez , okay . So I have several , but I would say the Coco guitar was definitely a . Favorite because that one challenged me quite a bit to to construct and then wearing it was just amazing . I would also say for Princess 5k Jasmine with the flying carpet behind me . That was also another favorite of mine and I love doing different versions of mini .
I tried at least every race . We can do one version of mini , usually for the longer race , and Probably one of my all-time favorites it was chef mini , and that one was for springtime surprise 10 miler , when it was like the ratatouille theme . So I went with the chef mini , but I also had remi on my shoulder as well too . So that was a lot of fun .
Outstanding Kristen . How about you ?
Oh God , it's like you're asking me to pick a favorite child .
I know I've put people on this spot before , but I let you pick . You don't have to narrow it to one . You can give it .
So obviously the VHS box was so much fun , but the other one that I really , really loved was for one and nine 10k . When I was jolly holiday Mary Poppins in the white I had the hat , tara and our friend Amanda were the penguins we have so many fun race pictures were there running behind me like they're wobbling .
Of course , it was just so much fun because she's a all-time favorite character , so that was really fun . Obviously , my springtime surprise 10 miler with the perfect season skirt was so I loved that . In fact , I have that one hanging in my closet where I see it every day , just because it's .
It's just a great reminder of what an accomplishment and how exhausting all that was . Yeah , but honestly I really I loved for the princess , half the the princess flight attendant , the kind of vintage panam Version of a flight attendant that was themed after the different princesses . So that one was really . That one was really , really fun .
And we all , we all had our little bags that we actually had Bags of peanuts that we were handing out to people in and that , pamela , you mentioned about not running with with the suitcase . I did not run with that and my , my suitcase , my , my peanut bag definitely got left in the Magic Kingdom . I was over it .
So but no , but that one was that one was so fun .
So and it's , it's those kind of more . For me it was the more obscure costumes that not everyone has seen before . That that I really , I really loved so and I love seeing all the big group costumes too . Yes , that's Pamela . I know that you know y'all or no , it was the the run dopey group that did the jellyfish with the clear umbrellas .
Yes , yeah , oh my gosh that one was so fun , and I knew that if it ever started raining , all I had to do was just run a little bit ahead To hang out with one of them .
So I just wanted to add one more so for for springtime surprise this year where the theme was Pixar , because I had always dreamed of having a Pixar theme here and my whole thought forever had been that I wanted to be luck . So the Pixar lamp . So I remember that one 10-miler and that one was an , only challenging to construct .
It was very challenging to do 6.2 miles in it . Yes , and the reason I chose to do it for the 10 cake was because for the 5k , I was like I definitely have to be lightning McQueen because he's another favorite of mine .
Of course , I chose that one for the 10k so that was very challenging but so much fun to do and walk in and had a blast in that one as well too . And , and as far as my favorites that I like to see , I love to see the hashtag Rondo be group ones too . They always nice , I agree .
One thing so it's fun hanging with them by the stage after the race and so it's fun hanging with them by the stage after the race , and Kristen sometimes will be out there too . I think she's out there all the time too . Pamela sometimes out there too , and Pamela and Tracy group group costumes are amazing as well , too Especially the . Miss Piggy one .
Oh yeah , I love that one too .
Yeah , they're , yeah , they're not hard . They're not hard to find . None of us are really hard to find friends . We will tell you where we're hanging out .
Margaret , your , your taco bell was Pretty spectacular , like let's , let's get , let's get real , because who would have ever thought to do like a fast food princess ?
but Taco Bell , you did it and did it well , thank you .
Well , I have a question , bob , for for you and greg and john and lisha what , what are , what are your favorite costumes ?
Well , it's easy for me because I've only done two really . I mean , I've done some others , but I really I really liked Sam Eagle . I really enjoyed being Sam Eagle . For one thing , when I put that Thing on top of me I was like seven feet tall . I was pretty easy to find and I got a pretty good response to that . Of course , tinker bob is .
I'm now a legend in my own mind With tinker bob , but the other guys have done some good ones .
I mean for me , I mean it's it's power line , it I mean it's one of those things where I would love to go all out . You know , being a theater kid growing up , I mean obviously I am used to wearing costumes all the time .
The problem is is I am just such a heavy sweater and I know that if I had any additional layers on me I would just be a hot mess on top of when I'm already a hot mess out on the course . But that's why I love Hawaiian pizza peril , because you know they really do a fantastic job of Celebrating the character through moisture wicking material .
And then , you know , you just throw on a few accessories here , there and butter bing , butter boom , you're done .
Alicia , you have a favorite costume ?
Um , I , like Greg , usually do more theming than costumes , but one of the ones that I did for marathon weekend Was a jesse costume and I enjoyed that one . Um , and actually this has inspired me to look into things for wine and dine . So thank you , ladies .
Yeah , very good You're welcome . I see what you did there . That was good . That was good , john . I liked uh . I liked uh animal . Was he your favorite or ?
that's the only real costume I ever put together . It was more like Greg then , like I'd wear like a Darth Vader shirt or a stormtrooper shirt because I'm a star wars geek . I had an idea for this year but I think I'm not going to do it . I was going to try . I was going to be Tom Petty In the uh , don't come around here video .
If you guys know that song , it's a whole . I know the song . The whole video is uh , what do you call it ? A spoof on allison wonderland .
Ah , that I didn't know . I know the song , didn't know the video .
Yeah , I wanted to add on , uh , greg's comment about kawaii . I have some of their tops that I've used , not necessarily for running in but for , like Disney , bounding in , and they're super comfortable for park day and everything too . Um , but I am actually now working with them .
They also do custom pieces as well , yeah , so they will print on a top , or , uh , they have leggings or I'm doing a skater dress , so I need a more simplified , uh athletic , breathable outfit for the marine kormirathon that I'm doing because it's long distance , so you have to keep that in mind .
But my uh thought going into that race was that I wanted to represent the washington monument , so that's a great way of having something printed on a skater dress . It's breathable that you could go out there and represent something big as well too . But keep it simplified .
Margaret , hang with us . I don't think you know this , but we're going to be talking to alex and a little bit from kpa , you know . Do you know , alex ?
I don't know , but that would be awesome from coin pizza barrel .
Yeah , he's going to be with us in just a little bit here . All right , who's running this season ? I know , pamela , your let's just go wine and dine , pamela , yes .
Yes .
Kristen 5k , and then look for Kristen handing out the medals .
Yes , I'll be there mob her . Okay , no , you can . It's totally fine . Hi here .
Yeah , it's fun , it's fun . Margaret , you're going to be there , wine and dine , yes , yes .
I'll be doing all three runs , yes good stuff , good stuff .
Well , I hope I get to see all of you and put medals around you for all your great accomplishments .
I'll tell people no , no , no , don't give me a medal , I must find Kristen .
I will tell you what . I usually go towards the back because I feel sorry for the people in the back . Everybody's up at the front and but no . I do that no love for the people in the back . Do you , alicia ? Yeah ? I'm like I'll just keep going , I'll just keep going . Yeah , show a little love to the volunteers in the back , I agree .
That's so true . I volunteered before as doing medals and , yeah , the backside doesn't get as much love . But what they did start doing one year and I don't know if they're still doing it is they would rotate us , so whenever oh , okay , first person went out of medals , they would grab their next batch and go to the back , and then we'd all .
That's good plan . So I'm not sure if that's still happening or not , but I could , I'll definitely be looking for .
Kristen as well too . Oh good , I'm excited , I'm excited 11 .
No set seven weeks away . Seven weeks 11 yeah , seven weeks away From wine and dine weekend . It's seemed like a long time in the wilderness , but we're getting Closer .
I'm ready to be back . I'm ready to be amongst my people . I run disney family like this feels like an eternity between april and november .
That's why I've enjoyed this so much tonight .
It's a little touch of being back with my disney friends and , as my husband says , I'm so happy you have found your people .
My people . That's right . And then we get to meet more of our people when we get down there too . Every year We'd be more and more friends , yeah it's like a big family reunion and there's different .
There's more and more like family that join the family , every time sure is .
And again to our friends who are heading for the first time , you will discover all of this is so true and we look forward to sharing it with you . All right , council of costumes . You have , once again , I've done yourself . We appreciate you so much . Margaret christen pambola , thanks for joining us . We are looking forward to seeing you really soon .
Thank you Thanks .
It's always fun to visit with the any of our disney friends , but the council of costumes , those Three ladies . I really appreciate them spending the time with us . They're fun and I I really do . I look forward to seeing what they come up with at disney races . Guys , you get any plans for costumes ? Any big plans this year , alicia , any any thoughts ?
well as they were talking and I said this well , we interviewed them that I was looking up ideas . I like to stay more neutral for half marathon and marathon distance , for wine and dine for the 10k . They gave me some ideas , so yeah there might be something . I don't know yet .
I'm gonna try . I'm gonna try the mad hatter for the 5k , I will , I will . I mean , I've got to do tanker bob in springtime . Um , I actually have a gaston shirt . Which I got from yeah , so I'm gonna wear that , the 10k I think would be right . Yep , um , I need to get some fake muscles , though I don't think I can bulk up in time . I don't .
I wanted to . Friends who are listening , who haven't been to disney before , you may get the impression that everybody wears a costume to every race . That's not true . In fact , if you look at some videos from small races , more people don't wear costumes than do , but it is a lot of fun and so we put some thought into this .
That's , that's what we're talking about . But don't feel any pressure that you must wear a costume , because for for years my first 30 or 40 runs there I didn't wear one , and but I'm having fun with it now . John , you got any , any thoughts , any ideas on a costume , except ?
the one I really I mentioned in the interview with the council of costumes . I just might figure out getting like a themed shirt maybe and wear that right now .
Yeah .
I'm not sure yet , because I don't know for why in dynam , don't know what the game plan will be , yet with uh , there there are restrictions , or what they're gonna allow what they're not gonna allow . So then once that happens , I might change it for , uh , marathon weekend I might have one .
I want to talk to jack about one , but I'll leave either as a surprise , okay , oh boy , oh boy , all right , great , I know you're not going to be a wine and dime , but uh , you thinking of anything for the season ?
I still have to figure out marathon weekend and um . But again , you're like we talked in the interview . It's nice because you know there's no super true theme , so you can really leave your or let your imagination run wild on that . Now . What I will say , though , is I am pretty set for springtime surprise , because I have um For the 5k .
I have a Sme shirt . So , I got peter pan covered and then for the 10k I have a Russell wilderness explorer shirt . So I'm covered there . So I just need to figure out the 10 miler and then I'll be okay .
But I will say the place where I got my shirts from Uh is from quine pizza peril and the other week we were very fortunate to chat with our friend alec , who is the owner of quine pizza peril alec .
Welcome to the rise and run podcast .
Yeah , thanks for having me .
Oh , we're glad you're joining us . It's about time , by god . We've been affiliated with you Over a year and this is the first we've had you on . Don't , don't get upset with us . Okay , it's all good . So , hawaiian pizza apparel , tell us how did you get started ?
Oh gosh , um how long has it been now . It's been almost 10 years . I want to say 10 years , 10 years next year . Um , I mean long story shorts like back forever ago , before disney bounding . Before any of that . Um , I wanted something that I could wear to the park's huge disney fan .
Um , I used to live in california and while the park was like 12 hours away , we would make it happen . I lived at the office at end of california .
Oh , it's , you is yeah .
Yeah , but , um , we'd make it happen . Um , so I started by just like screen printing shirts . Uh , it was the easiest way to go back back then . Um , and obviously , costumes aren't allowed for adults in the parks , um , even even halloween .
I feel like people are really pushing it now with the costumes going bigger and bigger for halloween , but back then it just like wasn't at all . So , um , I came up with , like casual cosplay quote-unquote shirts that are reminiscent , designed to look like disney characters , Um , that you can just casually wear .
And , um , you know , uh , I'm trying to think of how many years maybe three , three years in Um , I started to expand to the sublimation Uh printing process , which is what you see with the all over print clothing um , lasts longer than traditional screen printing .
And that's when I started to expand to dresses and leggings and , all of a sudden , you know , started to get recognized by the run disney community people looking for costumes , and I , um , with sublimation sublimation , you print on a stretchy spandex material , so it's like moisture , wicking , great for running in . Right right . They kind of went from there yeah .
Fascinating . So you , you do all the uh manufacturing , creating yourself . Then is that right ?
Um we used to we as an eye um .
That's too big now , huh .
Yeah , yeah , it's definitely like , besides braces , which I'd say , princess , is probably our biggest Grace okay , I'm here Um besides princess , um halloween is huge . Oh , yes , sure , sure with the , with the parks parties . So , yeah , I used to do it all in-house , but I've since had to outsource All of that stuff . It was just . It was a lot to take on ?
Oh , of course , and you started before etsy existed , is that right ?
Uh , not before etsy existed , but it was definitely smaller than it was . I would say , with the pandemic etsy blew up .
Yeah , I did . Yeah , yeah , Hawaiian pizza . Where did that name come from ?
Um Forever ago , like when I was in high school , I had a tumblr blog . If anybody remembers tumblr tumblr right goodness . Yeah , so it was just a silly name that I came up for my blog , and I never thought that this business would get that serious .
Oh well , goodness gracious . Yeah , you know , there's something in marketing to having a name like that , because it's something people will remember . Yeah , and so it's . It's a fairly effective tactic .
I'm so excited , I like that that we're having yawn in this episode , because I am a card carrying member of the Hawaiian pizza apparel family . I'm trying to think , going through my wardrobe , I have , I have rustle from up , I have smee power line , I might have one other , but I mean it .
I can tell you firsthand , folks , and this is not a paid endorsement or anything like that . I mean , this stuff is legit quality . You know . Again , if you're looking for that , you know moisture wicking material . Hawaiian pizza apparel is where it is at .
But the one thing , uh , that I've been always curious about , because when it comes to printing and obviously you know the , you know the sewing of the shirts and everything like that you take , for example , like a duny and berk bag , you know that's just like .
You know a massive print out on the leather and then it gets cut up and you know , sewn into the bag and each bag looks different . But with your work and your clothing line , it doesn't matter if you're ordering a small or a 3xl . The shirt looks the same , like you know , with my rustle , like everyone has , you know .
You know the , you know the , the band , you know , with the patches , all in the same spot . Can you talk about the , the process that goes into designing and then being able to Print that and display that correctly for people of all sizes ?
Yeah , um , well , we are happy that um , Some items come in a A , two extra small , but our majority of our clothing comes in extra small through 5xl , which are happy that we can have that range .
Um , but yeah , we um , I start with just like a basic template for , say , a shirt , and with the printing process it basically just prints out on a huge sheet of paper . It can be scaled up or down .
I work in very high resolution design files and so it so when I , when it's made to order , it's really made to order , you know , for that customer , whatever size that they're ordering , um , it's printed in that size . It's heat pressed On to blank fabric , cut and sewn together . So it's scaled for each size and we try our best to To get all the details .
You know , within the margins of the design . It can be a little tricky because you know it is handmade , so sometimes details do get a little cut off , but we try to as much detail as I can . You know in each design , as accurate as I can very good .
I also have a couple kpa shirts , greg I . I agree with you , they're qualities Really outstanding , absolutely .
Happy to hear . Another question that I have for you , alec , is you really have some deep cuts of , you know , going into , you know , the disney universe ?
Um , you know , in terms of drawing your inspiration , you know , like I mean , you know , the day that I discovered the power line shirt , like you know , I knew I needed to have that right away or um you had , you had him hooked alec oh absolutely , absolutely , um , but you know , I I've just been , you know , scrolling through in the last couple of days , you
know , and I've noticed , like you know , you have , uh , you know , the bluey characters . And then the one that has now officially Boggled my mind is you have a shirt that is themed off of the birthday cake castle From disney worlds 25th anniversary , I mean . I'm super super deep cuts here . Where do you get your inspiration from ?
It's really all customer requests , um , I mean , there there will be like things like like with bluey and stuff which Kind of slightly embarrassed to admit that my husband and I will watch it really casually .
Oh , same with that .
My wife and I watch it even after my daughter goes .
Yeah , yeah , we , we discovered it actually while we were like on a disney cruise . They like had it on a loop or something like that . We're just like the show was actually really funny for a kid show , so that that like was .
You know , my own thing is just like oh my gosh , I have to make you know a chili shirt or but um yeah , with like the , the cake and stuff that was . That was a customer request which you know , messaged me and I'll be happy to work with anybody on any idea . I was like , silly as it may sound , at the time Um .
So , yeah , the , yeah , the cake was a customer request . Um , I , I think it was , um , I think they , the customer was turning 25 and wanted it for one of the races .
Oh , wow , that's awesome , that's neat . Yeah , what are some of your favorites Alec ? What are some of your favorite customs ?
Um , I'd have to . Let's see , I'm trying to think um Probably I would say probably any of the marvel characters that we do .
Because , like , while I'll say that live action and CGI characters take me the longest design , because I I like to use Like photo , realistic , uh , like textures , like leather textures , and I'll go , I'll go to the fabric store If I need to and take photos of fabric so that it looks , you know that , crisp and realistic , and so , while like live action stuff
like will take me days to do , just like I don't know , like the front of a dress could take me , you know , three days , depending on how many layers I'm actually speaking of that I'm working on a Jane Foster Mighty Thor dress right now and it's oh , oh wow . Probably taking me almost a week .
Wow , wow , because it's so many layers with the armor and the pleading and all of that , so I'd probably say any any of those characters , just because , like , once I'm done , it just feels really good to be like this looks like as realistic as it can for a print and like just Satisfying , to be like yeah , I imagine it is yeah , yeah .
Well , that's awesome .
That's great . Okay , so you're talking about , you're designing these shirts . Do you have a design background , or is it just something you just picked up and started to roll with ?
I'm self-taught , I would say . I went to um university for film and I chose film because , like I obviously have always had a passion for movies and stuff , but in the background I was always on photoshop , like , I was always like tweaking stuff and doing graphic design of some sort .
So when I graduated and like needed to find something that was Mobile because my husband wasn't a military at the time Um , I just kind of went back to photoshop and I was just like , well , this is , I can design my own clothing , I can do this all from home , I can do it wherever we're stationed .
So I just , yeah , I always , just always went back to photoshop , all self-taught neat .
So costumes for run disney people . I know the wine and dine . Uh , weekends coming up and that's uh starts november second . Uh , if I want to order a shirt or an outfit , what's the deadlines for you us to get get in there ?
Well , this one's always a bit tricky because halloween is a very big time , so and I know people are you know they'll have their minds on halloween and then all the sudden wine and dine will come up . So it's kind of tough . But , um , I would say so we have um a rush order option and a non rush order option .
Um , our non rush order option word starting to get faster . That used to be about four to six weeks . Um , we're getting it closer to three to five . But to be safe , um , for a non rush order , I would say um october 1st , which is okay , that's not too bad . Yeah , and then for a rush order . Uh , we'll be taking them until october 16th .
Okay , okay , very good , but roughly the same time frames for the rest of the races about a month out pretty much yeah , a month out and then maybe like two weeks ish for rush orders . Yeah , yeah be safe friends , go six weeks yeah give a like , a bit of a break , alec , before we let you go . Anything else you'd like us to talk about ?
um yeah , right now for the month of september , we're Celebrating my big 30th birthday by running uh 30 off awesome all our ready to ship stock . That'll be in our etsy shop . That's where all our ready to ship stuff is . That can ship the very next day from orders . That's the fastest you'll ever get .
Okay um , and then we're also doing 15 off of rush orders which ship in one to two weeks , and then 10 off everything else fantastic .
Good luck with all of that and thank you for letting us know .
Well , alec , that sounds all very exciting . Happy birthday , by the way . So hopefully the sale goes well for you , um , but obviously you know you mentioned your etsy shop , but if people do want to , you know , place an order , get in touch with you . Episode 105 , we're going to invite some folks who either are out on the West Coast or who have run Disneyland races in the past Talk a little bit about what we think might be coming up at the Disneyland race in January .
Of course we don't know , but it might be helpful information for some of you . All right , my friends , it is time now for the . Race Report . This is going to be a long one . I love I can't tell you , I get so excited the fact that all of you want to share this with us and I hope that we do justice to you with this report . I tried my best .
I hope I didn't miss any . But I'm going to have to go kind of quickly on some of these . For instance , big weekend in Bird in Hand , pennsylvania , just a little bit east of the city of Lancaster . You've heard us talking about it . The Bird in Hand weekend started on Friday with the 5K running the 5K Dawn , ellie , karen and Mary . If there were others .
I hope I didn't miss you , but I hope you enjoyed it and I hope you had a chance to get a picture with the camel . In Lansing , michigan , marty ran the Gordy's Pumpkin Run 5K . In Newcastle upon Tyne in the United Kingdom , the Great North 5K . This is a celebration of running in the northeastern part of England that attracts 60,000 runners .
Wow , that's a lot of people . Now I don't know that they're all in the one race because there are two races and then there's a kids race also .
But our friend from England , andy Andrew I think he goes by Andy Andrew on Facebook it was pretty warm especially I mean , england's not used this kind of weather 30 degrees centigrade , which is approximately mid-80s , and we're going to hear from Andy again over the weekend . So this 5K started at dusk . He knocked it out in under 30 minutes . Great job .
In Columbia , south Carolina , the Tunnel to Towers 5K . Laurie ran this one . Not a PR , but what a great experience . Hats off to all the firefighters and police that ran this thing in full gear . 25 people showed up and ran or walked this 5K . The Tunnels to Towers .
On 9-11 weekend In the great Smoky Mountains of Tennessee , the Smoky Mountain Black Bear Challenge . Jimmy and Melanie here Now . I got a little confused because Jimmy had one city , melanie had another and then the bib had a third . But it's got to be the same race , it's got to be Again . This was a weekend event because they ran . I've got them here .
On Friday , jimmy and Melanie did a 5K . It was kind of rainy , melanie was with the family . You know Jimmy , right , Alicia . I do . He's one of my runners . And then on Saturday , jimmy ran a 5K again , melanie this time ran a half marathon . Conditions were ideal in Tennessee for a half marathon .
Melanie got to see a mama bear with her three cubs and she knocked out a two and a half minute PR . Good job , jimmy and Melanie . Let's go back to Bird in Hand , pennsylvania . Greg , I'm just going to let you take a couple minutes and tell us about the Bird in Hand half marathon .
So , bird in Hand , the central overall theme to the weekend is community . It is the entire race weekend is put on by the local fire company and they literally get the entire community involved in this , from local catering companies that provide food for the pizza and pasta party that they have on Friday night .
They have s'mores that are available on Friday night and then , bob , as you know and John , so do you One of the most incredible post race picnic festivals that I have ever been a part of , from the ribs to the Amish barbecue , chicken and potato salad and shoe fly pie and everything like that .
And then , on top of that , you have local members of the community , both the Amish and the other citizens of the town , that are out on the course providing the water and the Gatorade and the ice and the Rita's Italian ice and everything like that . There you go .
You know they really , you know they really come out in droves to show support for this event and it's very , very special and it's wonderful to be a part of . But that idea of community extends out into the running community as well and actually the community of our inner circles as well too .
I became aware of burden hand thanks to the Galloway customized training program and coach twigs , and then it was from there . You know , we learned about the extra mile podcast and the number of listeners that they have that come out to this event .
And then you know , in the last year or so , the number of rise and run participants and you know I we've even met friends , you know , from the will run for podcast community that come out for this event and it is just a wonderful celebration of togetherness and supporting one another and running .
And it is such a fabulous event that this was my third year in a row doing it and I know I've been running for almost 10 years now and I've been kicking myself that I didn't get involved .
I didn't get involved in this sooner because it is truly such a special event and and before we get into my race recap and the and the wonderful recaps from all of our our friends that were there . I want to give a special shout out to our friend , nate , who is part of all of these communities that I that I just mentioned .
He's the one that spearheads the organization of all of these groups .
You know , in terms of you know introducing people to one another so everyone could have , you know a racing buddy and you know organizing our little get together that we had during the pizza and pasta party before the 5k and then , for those of us that stuck around a little bit after the race , you know we all had a nice meal together about 15 minutes outside
of Lancaster . He put in a lot of work and it creates such wonderful bonds and wonderful friendship . So , nate , if you're listening , thank you so much for all of your hard work this past weekend . You really made it one truly memorable weekend .
Yeah , it's a great event . I missed it this year , but I really hope to be there next year .
I want to mention something , too , about that . Well , we were . We , greg , david . We're all sitting at the table , we're all eaten and the last runner comes by . They made the biggest thing about that last runner finish in that race . People , people ran , got up , ran back out to the finish shoot to cheer that person on which I thought was really great .
And that was several hours after the majority of people finished . I mean , John , what would you say ? That it was probably well after noon , right , yeah , you know .
So I mean that that person was out there four plus hours , and you know , and again you know , like John said , the fact that they made such a wonderful celebration of that final runner was just absolutely awesome .
Great , that is outstanding . It is a wonderful event . We love the camaraderie at Disney it's . Those are running events like no other . But there are others that we really enjoy Bird in hand . Jeff Galloway's run in the spring now to a degree space coast over here right up for Thanksgiving attracts a bunch of friends to .
So these are some wonderful events if you can get to them . And yeah , I think I said already that I want to be there next year .
But as for my particular race this weekend , it was one of those things where , again , I really did not have a time . Goal for this race is number one . It was my first race since marathon weekend and I had two very varying experiences in my last two years running .
Two years ago when I did this , I was aiming for a POT when at the time , pot is were 230 . The aforementioned Nate that I mentioned before you know he helped me pace that . Unfortunately , I didn't hit it , but I have a PR and it's incredible to know that you know to think that this hilly and this difficult of a course is my PR .
I always , you know , I'm surprised to remind myself of that . And then last year I had the opportunity , Bob , to to pay a pace and be running buddies with you and we're coming off an injury and had a game plan and everything like that . So , you know , had a fantastic time there . I think we hit almost three hours , you know , right on the dot .
So I was like , hey , listen , if I can get somewhere in between one of those two times I'll be a happy camper . And I ended up at the 302 , my slowest burden hand ever , because number one , as I mentioned before very difficult course , lots of rolling hills and a couple of do'sies .
Number two this in my three years this was the hottest burden hand I've ever been a part of and talking with some friends after the race . So this was the second hottest burden hand on record . Apparently , when I checked my race stats , restart was at 730 in the morning and we were already at 70 degrees with 98% humidity .
It was supposed to be cloudy and there was not a lot of clouds , so that didn't make things difficult . Where I got my personal worst was because I was running with our friend Tara for the first six miles and she had to split off to use a porta potty and she , you know , we had agreed that I was just going to keep going , she would catch up .
I was really really good because I made sure , you know , for this race to do my hill workouts and I felt very confident with those . And I got to mile nine and I was like you know what ? I think I'm going to push the envelope a little bit and see what I can do . Here again , I knew it wasn't PR pays , but I wanted to see what I can do .
And about two minutes after having that thought , young woman who was in front of me . All of a sudden I saw her leaning and she fell off the side of the road and rolled down the embankment . So another woman . I went and grabbed her , pulled her back up onto the road and then we asked her if she was okay and she said yes .
So she kept running and five steps later she is heading back towards heading going down the embankment . So another woman . I start yelling at her like you need to stop , you need to stop . And she wouldn't . So we chased her for about a tenth of a mile .
Finally the woman was able to grab her hydration belt and stopped her and then she just collapsed into her arms . We got her down on the ground , you know , got her feet up and everything like that . Thankfully , a lot more qualified people than myself showed up and were able to . You know knew the number for the paramedics and you know , had water on them .
You know the spray or stomach down and her forehead and everything like that . But I knew because I had been with this woman since you know she fell the first time that I wasn't going to leave until the paramedics showed up . But you know , I wanted to be able to help in some way .
And then all of a sudden somebody said let's try to create shade for her . Well , for those of you that know me , I'm a wide-bodied guy , so I just positioned myself so that my body created shade for her . We were able to get her you know , her heart rate down and everything like that Thankfully never lost consciousness or anything like that .
But when she got a little bit more coherent , she admitted to us that she ran out of fuel at mile four .
So my little PSA to everybody is obviously , you know , regardless of whatever distance you're running , make sure you know even going back to Bob's story from earlier in the episode , you know , make sure you're taking the appropriate amounts of water and electrolytes and fuel with you and make sure that you have enough to get you through that entire run , so a
situation like this doesn't happen . But once paramedics showed up , I felt good enough to keep moving and thankfully Tara , who I was running with before , ended up popping up , as well as our friend Roxanne from the Customized Training Group . So the three of us just ran the last four miles in together and it was absolutely wonderful .
And then I had I got my horseshoe medal and had that delicious barbecue and all is good in the world .
Outstanding Good report . Glad you had a good time . Yeah , I've seen heat injuries before and that's exactly what people get , so I'm glad it all worked out All right . We've got a long list of folks who ran burden hand . I'll call them off . Some of them gave us race reports . So let's start at the top . Caroline was there . David was there .
David gave us a report .
Hey , this is David . I am live from the finish line at the Bird and Hand Half Marathon . I was a warm sunny day , very humid , but I started with the two hour pace group , fell behind a little bit , finished 205.15 , which is about a five minute PR . Tough day but thrilled with the results and happy to be here .
Great , great , great crowd , great community , great food .
Dawn was there . Denise , greg , of course , jen Karen Kent Kent also provided a report , hey .
John , it's Kent Smith . I'm from Perry Hall , maryland , here running a burden hand half marathon . This is a preparation race for my Hunter Myler in five weeks . I was open to just take it at about 90% . I did pretty well under the circumstances , ran it in 205 . Not a PR , but definitely pleased with how I did today . Lauren .
Mary Nate , Roxanne , Steve . Steve gave us the intro , but he also gave us a race report .
Hi , this is Steve from the Bird and Hand Half Marathon . It was a hot , humid day . Didn't quite finish as good as I wanted to , but all in all it was a good time . Got to meet some new friends , Got to meet Greg , got to meet John and , of course , the infamous camel . So all in all , it was a good day here at the Bird and Hand Half .
Greg mentioned Tara . Michelle was there . Victoria , who we are going to speak to again in just a few moments , gave us this report .
Hi y'all . I'm Tori and I just did the Bird and Hand Half Marathon . It was super humid but very pretty , and I got a picture with a camel , which was awesome . A lot more hills than I expected , though , too . Probably look at elevation charts before your race . Yeah , it was super fun , and I now get to hang out with the Rise and Run podcast .
And the last name I have on the list here is Ellie . I hope I didn't leave anyone out , but those were the names that either . You either put your name on the race report originally or I did see a report in the Facebook group about the Bird and Hand race Great weekend .
And then one other person I do want to shout out real quick , bob . You mentioned our friend Lauren , who ran this race . I believe , out of everyone that was there , she was the only one of our group to earn the illustrious Golden Apple Award , which is the Road Apple .
yeah .
Yeah , the Golden Road Apple Award yeah . And in order to earn that , you have to run Bird and Hand and also the Garden Spot Half Marathon , which is in Harrisburg , usually in March or April sometime , but we've talked about this before .
You take the horse manure that are called Road Apples and they collect them and shine them up and bronze them and put them onto a plaque . I posted a picture of them on our Instagram stories because it is a very special award , so we just wanted to make sure to recognize her for earning her Road Apple Award there .
As much fun as it is , we've got to move away from Pennsylvania and on to Denver , colorado , for the Denver 5K . So you're us ran that event . Margaret , who we were talking to earlier tonight , switched to a virtual run , the Real Florida Beach 5K .
She switched so that she could attend live the Battle of the Bands 5K in Castlebury , florida , beautiful morning , the weather was nice . In Orlando this weekend Margaret went as her daughter and her band performed at mile three and Margaret , as she so often does , met a whole bunch of friends at this event .
Cody was there , talked about the three awesome local bands were on the course . Apparently , at the end they voted for their favorite . Michael was there and Tabitha was there . Tabitha again commented the weather was nicer . Her husband and she . Her husband , michael and Tabitha both PR'd this race . Everybody got the medals were nice .
Everybody got these cute little look like I don't know , not armadillas . Look like little animals , those plant holders . They got plants in these cute little holders . That's part of the Battle of the Bands 5K Big event in Baltimore , the Charles Street 12-Miler . Ethan and Kelly were there .
Our friend Jeff was in Danville , indiana , for the Fair on the Square Half Marathon . Here's another great event . I want to stop and talk about for a moment . I've never been to it . It's out in Carnation , washington . It's called Beat the Blurge . It is I remember it from last year . It's various distances .
They've got a 5K , a half and a full marathon , great weather this weekend . There's a blog and you can find it by searching for the oatmeal . That features a Blurge comic . Blurge is a character that the author has made up that he talks about when he wants to go running , the Blurge tries to talk him out of it .
Now Blurge , he describes , is the sound that the ketchup or mustard makes when you squeeze it out of the squeeze jar the Blurge . At the end of this event they offer a cake burrito sundae bar complete with potato chips , candy , chocolate sauce , whipped cream and you put it all on top of a tortilla . That's at the end , okay .
During the event , let's start with our friend Kristen who ran the half . Kristen went to the burrito nut , not doughnut , not burrito . The burrito nut stopped the maple doughnut burrito nut , which she says was just a bit too much . It's essentially a sweeter , crunchier maple doughnut . That in the middle of a half marathon is just unnecessary .
Some of it was doing somersaults the rest of the day . But Kristen finished the half , kimberly and her family whether it's family and friends or family , I'm not positive . B ran the 5K , josh ran the half , kimberly ran the full .
But again , a neat part of this is they stagger the starts at different times so that they actually all finished right about the same time . They all caught up with each other about a mile to go . She posts the question what's a blurge ?
I'm not sure I can tell you , but at every water stop there's the blurge there and they have characters dressed like the blurge . They're offering cake .
Somehow the blurge convinced her that it was a good idea To carry a full-sized sheet cake with her for the last three miles of the marathon , she says the look on her daughter's face when she saw her carry in this thing with a mile to go was priceless , worth all the extra effort .
And the last person I have here from the rise and run family that ran this is Heather . Heather ran the half , says the blurge . Characters along the course . We're trying to talk runners into tapping out and taking naps on one of the couches that they had set up on the course . What does this sound like ? A fun run ? Or what , holy cow .
This sounds like a fun event . So beat the blurge carnation . Kristen Kimberly , josh B Heather , thanks for sharing those stories . That sounds great . We have to look into that just a little more . All right , let's move on . The old forge half marathon . Old forge , new York .
Kelly was there Celebrating one year until her wedding on September 7th next year by running her first half marathon . Well , first half marathon , we know what that means and in her finished photo , her finished photo features her dog Sully . New Orleans , louisiana .
The Saints kickoff 5k Stevie Fun to run to the finish on the 50 yard line even had some character stops . The Saints have a bunch of mascots . They have sirs , saint gumbo , the dog and Saint Vader . They were all out there . The best part of the New Orleans running is the free beer . Jumbalaya at the finish mirror was there .
She said how fun it was to end in the Superdome on the 50 , of course , nice to run into an air-conditioned building at the end of the . At the end of the run , mira PR'd her 5k time by almost a minute and First time her husband ran with her and the kids did their first kids race . So there we are in New Orleans kicking off the NFL season .
Cedar Rapids , iowa . Tracy ran the a trash more 5k dash 10th year for this race . Tracy's been in all of them except for the first . One goes up to the top of Mount Trashmore . Mount Trashmore is a former landfill . Very steep climb she she showed some pictures very steep climb , but the views of the city from the top of Mount Trashmore are amazing .
Wood fired pizza at the end . That's always a good thing . Naperville , illinois , the Naperville trails half marathon . Mark mark was with us on the spotlight last week . Said that he was a bit slow in it . Well , this one . But that's okay . It was the same course , or at least parts of the same course , as mark described to us last week .
He talked about running on the grass , said he only had to run on the grass once . This time Caitlyn was there and Caitlyn was happy that she heard mark spotlight last week because then she was ready for the grass horse track . She had a bit of trouble in the last two miles but did well .
Pr'd by half a second , half a second , half a minute , half an hour . We don't care . Pr's a PR . Great job , caitlyn . The general Montgomery Day 8k run walk in Montgomery , new York . Megan was there . Great crowd support . Saw a lot of old friends , made some new ones . She PR'd two minutes faster than last year the run . Mag mile , chicago , illinois .
Laura said the weather was great , got there really early . Who's kind of worried about traffic and parking ? Had a good time though . Good run , had fun . Just a minute shy for PR , so that's a good job . Laura . University of Houston 10k in Texas . Brandy was there . She was experimenting . We talked about costumes and checking out your costumes .
She was trying out the beginnings of a Dalmatians costume that she plans to eat , wear at these years wine and dye . Now Brandy also ran another event this weekend and I I Just found this before we started recording the run with the Sun . Las Vegas 5k . I don't know much about it .
I know she was kind of tickled because the Porta part parties were provided by a company named Royal flush Vegas . Royal flush Porta parties pretty cool . Our friend Joe did the 5k for this . Virtually . Richmond Hill , georgia . The marching madness 5k . Melissa , fun trail course . Didn't see any snakes or alligators . Well , that's a good thing , melissa .
You don't want to see snakes or alligators on a run . Did get to run with some other run Disney friends . This is our fourth long run in a row that she's suffered . She's having some trouble with her feet but I hope that's getting better . The last chance BQ marathon in Geneva , illinois .
And it is the last chance because Boston registration , I think , has already begun .
So get open up on Monday of this .
Yeah . So Saturday Jessica ran it looking for a sub three hour . Fell four times in this event including about 50 feet from the finish line , still ended up qualifying and ended up with a PR In the number of times fallen in a race . But hey , bq , last chance . Congratulations , jessica .
Hope you enjoy the Boston Marathon next April , the revel , big cottonwood half and Salt Lake City , utah . Jay was there . The temperatures were 37 degrees at the top of the canyon when they started , 73 degrees at the finish . Coincidence , the numbers just flipped three , seven and seven , three . The elevations Drop from start to finish was about 2,900 feet .
No beer at the end and , quoting Jay , a distinct lack of plastic cheese . But got to try out the . They had the rapid reboot Brand of the compression boots , the pneumatic compression boots . Got to try those out at the end thought they were pretty sweet . Plymouth , massachusetts .
Heidi did the 10k at the run to the rock race weekend Lovely course through downtown Plymouth . A lot of historic spots along the way . Started and finished at Plymouth Rock . That's a pretty historic site . Heating , humidity in New England were rough this weekend , kind of similar to burden hand , but she felt stronger . That then she did during her July 10k .
So how do you think that's a win ? I agree entirely . Hey , back to Andy who's running in Newcastle upon time , united Kingdom , on Saturday . His daughter is six-year-old daughter . Lena Ran the 1.5k Beautiful picture of this Gorgeous little red-headed girl , biggest smile on her face . I know dad's proud of that one .
That was really neat and he says that Lane is her his biggest fan and I think he said something about her being with him when he gets to wine and dine . This year he comes back up on the report here in a little bit . Let's see if my memory is correct . In Detroit , michigan , the women run the D event 5k , 10k , half . Sarah ran this one .
I'm not sure what distance she ran , but it's a beautiful morning , great views of Detroit and Windsor across the river . This event features a caramel mile . That sounds like fun , the caramel as in caramel candy . Guess who the race announcer was ? I will take you back to episode 102 , for the race announcer Fitz was there . Yeah , nice , a nice picture .
Sarah and Fitz helped her across the finish line . I'm not helped her , but was hand-in-hand with her crossing . That's awesome .
Yeah , I love that she does that ?
Oh yeah , yeah , that's pretty neat . Alright , let's go to Lawrenceville , georgia , the she-wolf women's half marathon . Holly was their small field . So Holly , like so many of us , is a back-of-the-packer . She's treating this as a catered training run , kind of left her alone are Close to alone on a lot of the course .
Course was pretty it's along a greenway , a couple of road miles , but mostly wooded or lake views . That sounds very pleasant . Her only other half in her 50s was wine and dine in 22 when she PR'd and fun . So this one is a decade PR , holly . We count those . The kids helping kids do more 5k in Stamford , connecticut . Sue was there .
Great views of Long Island again . The heat and humidity in the Northeast was pretty tough . This weekend she's looking forward to the cooler New England weather . Yeah , I'm sure she is , but then it's gonna get really cold . I think it's gonna get tough , but that's all good . Hey , sue's doing the Connecticut 169 . This was number 138 .
North Burra , massachusetts , the North Burra Apple Fest 5k . That sounds very fall-like . Madge was there . This event is the first 5k that she trained for when she started running back in 2015 . She did it this weekend as part of her 10 mile training run . Ran from the house to the start two miles .
Picked up the bib did a warm-up lap which kind of freaked out the water stop . Volunteers who thought maybe the race had started already Ran the race . Ran home after stopping for some apple cider donuts and an apple crisp muffin . Running two miles after apple cider donuts and apple crisp muffins Sounds like a challenge all to itself .
I'd say so job , yeah .
And on Saturday in Lake Worth of Florida , the South Florida popsicle 5k . Jennifer was there with her friend Michelle . Great run and Of course had a refreshing popsicle at the finish line . The friends we had . We already mentioned a couple weekend events , but there's one more here . Saturday and Sunday in Daytona , florida , the run Daytona Triple dare challenge .
All three races conducted in and around the Daytona International Speedway . Kayla did the triple dare , she did the 10k on Saturday morning , the 5k Saturday evening and the 15k Sunday morning . Had a great 10k when easy in the 5k , then had a little trouble in the 15k . She thought she might get picked up but she kept going and she finished the 15k .
So she knocked out all three way to go . Kayla , jason Alder did also did the triple dare . Same events . Had a great time running around the track , even went up the 31 degree bank . You've seen them on TV but unless you've seen them live , those banks are Amazing and just to get to the top is quite an effort .
Jason did something that I made the mistake of doing one time before refereeing a soccer match he donated blood between races . So I Think , and he agreed , that he kind of felt that on Sunday morning on the 15k , but Proud of you for donating the blood , though , jason . That's a noble thing to do and a great thing to do . Here's our buddy , margaret .
Again , margaret ran the 5k on Saturday evening . She ran it dressed as a race car , of course . Okay , friends , let's move to Sunday and and let's start in King of Prussia , pennsylvania . That's right , that's the name of the town , king of Prussia , a place near and dear to my heart .
I just had lunch there on Friday .
Is that a fact ? That is a fact and anyone from the area knows what . What did they know ? Greg from King of Prussia ?
It is the second or third largest mall in the .
United States . It's a huge mall , it used to be . In terms of retail space , it used to be the largest because Mall of America has that big amusement park in it . So , even though Mall of America was larger , king of Prussia Plaza and the court but boy , you talk about getting sidetracked .
We've got a guest here with us who is going hey , come on , man , you're inviting me here for a reason not to talk about the King of Prussia Plaza . Victoria , you ran the Queen of Prussia 10k , amongst other things , this weekend . Welcome to the race report spotlight .
Hi , y'all glad to join .
Oh , thank you . We appreciate you spending time with us . We enjoy this part of the podcast a whole bunch . I've already mentioned your name . This again because you were . You started out in burden hand , right .
Yep , a nice , hot but beautiful race to run .
Yeah , yeah , you nailed it . You know that we've talked about it a bunch already . I don't want to go too far into it , but I'm glad you , I'm glad you won , I'm glad you had a good time . That's a , that is just an excellent race , as we've said before .
I'm also going to ask you about last weekend , but we invited you this time to talk about the Queen of Prussia 10k , so let's start by talking about that . How was this race this weekend ?
It was so much fun . It was a little bit rainy . It was a downpour when it started sprinkling as we left my apartment to walk over to the start line , which was beautiful town center , and then it down poured for a solid , solid hour , two hours .
It was raining when we started and when we finished , but it was really cool because it's a women's only race , so it was all these gals dressed up in . I saw some people in crowned crew , some in their sparkle athletics , where Not a lot of costumes , costumes but a few tutus here and there , uh-huh .
And about halfway through there was one gal who started cheering we love Hills . And so then it started going where we had a quarter mile of , as everyone passed each other because it was an out-and-back course , people would say You're looking awesome , ladies , way to go , and it was just so much positivity and cheering .
It was really fun and I talked to the gal who did the we love Hills and it turns out she also listens to this podcast .
Oh , how about that ?
It was really cool .
It's a small world out there . It is . Was it a hilly course ?
Surprisingly hilly . Coming from Colorado , I'm always I I have a bit of an ego when it comes to Hills and I'm constantly Well that Pennsylvania has so many . There were about Three big Hills one was right before the turnaround and one Immediately after the turnaround , with a final hill at the finish line a lot of rolling terrain , that no real mountains .
A lot of rolling terrain , oh yeah .
Victoria , I'm interested .
I know you're originally from Colorado , I know you're here temporarily for for a work assignment , but , you know , looking at the course map of this race , it looks like your was this part of the new extension of the Chester Valley Trail , because I can actually grab the Chester Valley Trail where I live , but on the complete opposite side , and I've never had a
chance to get on to the new section . So I'm assuming that those include the hills that you're talking about .
Yeah , the Chester Trail where we caught it . You go about four miles the way we headed and you're in Bridgeport .
So we had a bridge part . Okay , yeah , friends who are listening , victoria and I talked for about 15 minutes before we started here .
I grew up in this part of the country so I got all that out of the way , so I don't bore our friends who are listening , but it's really neat for me to sit here and go yeah , I know where that is and I know where that is . That's a lot of fun . How was the race crowd Approximately was ? It sounds like a pretty good sized run .
I think there were over 500 of us in the tent .
That's not bad .
So a good sized field too .
That's not bad .
Lots of people the entire time , which is really great because it was it was downpouring and there was still everyone packed up into the carousel Before we started .
Oh yeah , how nice though that you could walk to the start line from your apartment .
I was so spoiled I have never been able to do that and I was like , oh yeah , we'll just leave 15 minutes before the race starts , and it's a five-minute walk over there to the town center . That's nice right next to the Wegmans too , so I was like I know this one Very good Outstanding .
So look , this one sounds like fun . But I want to talk about a couple others too . We already mentioned you did burden hand this weekend , so you doubled up this weekend . You had a big weekend last weekend . Also , you did three halves in three days , right , Yep , I decided so .
I'm trying to run a half in all 50 states , and so while I'm on the east coast I might as well get some of these states out while they're in driving distance . So I did two in New Hampshire , one a trail run , the other more of a road race . And then I did the facts in New Haven half , where Quite the stars studded running lineup competing .
Oh my goodness . Yes , it sure was . It sure was . Is that the one where they had the US track and field 20k championships ?
Oh , yeah , yeah so we had , like I think , emma Bates and Deslinden and so many names that even I heard I was like , oh , the , the big players are here , that's yeah .
Molly Seidel was there , I remember . Yeah , emily Sisson , I think , won the race , I believe .
I think so yeah .
I am not sure . Yeah , so how far along are you ? You trying to do 50 and 50 ? I .
Think I'm at 14 and then I have this weekend off . Next weekend I'm doing Maryland with the will run for podcast crew . We're all gonna be up there and then my friend and I are going down the shore to Ocean City , New Jersey . How to girl , how to girl , that's learned you don't say go to the beach , it's down the shore .
Did you hear that rolled right off her tongue . It was like yes , it did like she's a native . That was impressive , victoria , very .
Victoria , do me a favor . Can you say water please ?
I know how to say it here .
What are you ?
here , but it's water everywhere else .
Do you know how long it took me to get that out of my lexicon ?
to say water , water , water , ice is delightful . I Will say that one is . I will pronounce as water , because that is , it's in the spirit of it .
It is . It is Wodr yes they .
They sell t-shirts here at spring training for the Phillies that say clear water . It's W clear WOD or WODR .
Yeah , on the note of the Phillies , I did get a high five , the Philly fanatic . I already told Bob that but I got to meet him and high five him at the end of the Queen of Prussia 10k because he was .
That is fantastic .
He's so cool .
That is fantastic . Race is coming up now . You're doing the 50 and 15 . You talked about going down to Merrill and I think that's really neat . Say , say hi to the will run for a gang for us . What else is coming up and when will we see you at Disney ?
I think I'm gonna try I'm looking at flights right now to volunteer at wine and dine , just because a good excuse to Come out and use that annual pass I splurged on this year , yeah , and then for sure I'm doing dopey , my little sister and I have been training and I have another friend , raquel , who's going to be doing her first marathon with us as part of
the goofy challenge that , and so we're getting all ready for that . So I'm trying to make sure I'm training a little extra so that way for their first marathon I can be a good cheerleader . And Then my mom's doing her first ever half marathon at Disneyland .
Because she was , I was working when she was registering us all and she got caught up in the spirit and she , she signed up for the half marathon because she was in and she was registering and she got , she got amped , and now she . Now she gets to train and she is a little less amped , but still excited . That's , that's that's not a be there .
That's awesome I think it's very exciting . I'm , I'm proud of her . I know you are too . I think that's cool . She's gonna do so good and she , she loves listening to all of the podcast with me .
She's gone to meet a few people when I go out to my races , and so Now she gets to be one of them . What's mom's name ?
Victoria Aaron , but she loves being referred to as Tori's mom on podcast because , then she'll show it to all her friends .
That's what the will run for . Podcast people called her the first time I've ever been on a marathon . The first time .
All right , tori's mom , you're gonna kill it . You're gonna come . Sorry , I'm not gonna be out there to see it , but we'll have some of our friends out there . That'll be awesome .
But also if you are in King of Prussia you can try the Queen of Prussia IPA to . Workhorse brewing had a special beer for the race .
Oh wow , my goodness , I really enjoy workhorses . It's like a margarita ghost . It's so good . I haven't got in a while , but but if you ever go back to the brewery , try that one . It's very good .
Okay , we'll have to do that .
Things have changed since I left . When we're done here , though , I'm gonna tell you where to get the best pizza .
Okay .
Okay , I love any recommendations alright , victoria , I want to you know . Great , great challenge 50 and 50 . Good luck on that . I hope you knock out a whole bunch of them while you're here on the East Coast . Good run this weekend , great job last weekend . You're you're killing it . We're looking forward to seeing you at Disney World .
Excited to see y'all there too .
Thanks , victoria . Moving to the western part of Pennsylvania in Pittsburgh , the dormant dash 5k Julia was there . Racist top 300 feet of elevation in a 5k . That's a lot of elevation change for a 5k .
Best part , it starts right down the street from her house , not unlike Victoria Just told us about the Queen of Prussia run so she could leave 10 minutes before the start , get there on time and Catch this win the event first female to finish . Nice nice , julia , congratulations . Mount Vernon , virginia . The George Washington Patriot run 10 miler .
Heather and Tucker were there . I Expected to hear about this one . We'll have to wait . Maybe next week the River Run half marathon in Brea , ohio , because Jack ran that one . So we get Jack back here . She'll tell us all about it . In East Providence , rhode Island , the black goose half marathon . Avery finished that one .
Finishing up now on this , the world's biggest half marathon is how they build it , bill it . We talked about it a couple times . The Great North run in the United Kingdom Andy ran . This one is a run to the coast . It was hot . He says there are 60,000 runners there . That makes it really tough to get going .
The main thing in an event like this is really just finishing it's . It's really tough when you've got that many bodies around you and it's already hot . I do recall running a peach tree one time in circumstances like that . Not quite 60,000 runners , but a lot . It's enough runners to generate even more heat and humidity down close to the ground .
So and you knock this out in 216 , two hours , 16 minutes . That's pretty darn good . After they finished , in all this heat he has , they had what he describes as Biblical rain which led to a four-hour journey back to the start where they were soaked . And yeah , he confirms here that he will be at wine and dine in Westerly Rhode Island .
Rachel ran the surf town half marathon . For Swifty fans , the race goes right by the gate of her watch Hill House . Unfortunately , no character stops at the gate . Too bad , but a good run . Rachel bothman , montana , jennifer . Beautiful fall day , chilly at the start , then breezy and shady entire route . That sounds good . Almost all downhill that also sounds good .
This is her last half . Oh no , I'm sorry . Her next run is Her last half marathon for her planetary challenge , which is coming up on September 30 . Remember last week Jennifer talked about the half Marathon fanatics and now she was running to Saturn . Well , she's getting closer . And I did look it up , john .
No , they don't count Pluto , so they start at Neptune . It's pretty challenging . I'd forgotten . I was in it four or five years ago and you can't just . You can't just knock out a Half every five or six months . You've got to do quite a few in a short period of time to move in , for instance , to get to the sun .
You've got to do 52 halves in 52 weeks .
That's .
So I don't think many people make it to the Sun , but Jennifer's on her way to Saturn , which is a pretty , pretty good accomplishment . Alright , race report . Friends , the last event I have for the weekend occurred in Santa Monica , california , the Santa Monica classic 5k . Jackie was there . This is the first race in the triple 5k tour of LA .
Just a little bit off of her 5k PR but did come in fourth in her age group . That's a good job . Beautiful course along the Pacific Ocean , great finish festival , nice pictures taken right there at the famous Santa Monica pier . Friends , beautiful , thank you . Yeah , I'm a little horse . It took a little while . Gosh , I appreciate the enthusiasm and the response .
