Episode description

Can you believe it? We’ve hit the big 100! On this week's episode, we’re taking you on a journey back to where it all began for the Rise and Run podcast. We’ll be revisiting our first days, sharing some insights on our infamous 3am alarm, our first race report, and even the conception of our beloved phrase, “If you run, you are our friend.” We’ll be walking you through our extraordinary growth journey – what started with a few hundred downloads, now spans across continents and countries, making us a top running podcast globally.

But it’s not all glitz and glamour; we've had our fair share of funny stories, goof-ups, and unforgettable moments along the way. Remember the very short Wine and Dine roll call from Episode 3? Or that time when Jack thought we should hop in our Mandalorian? We're recollecting it all, while also shedding light on some crucial aspects of running, like fueling your body and the significance of adequate intake for athletic success.

We’re also taking a moment to acknowledge some of our former guests who’ve played instrumental roles in our podcast’s success. You'll hear from our past guests, including, the runDisney Race Announcers, and even the iconic Jeff Galloway, as they share their messages of congratulations and their favorite memories with us. As we celebrate our 100th episode, we hope to leave you feeling inspired, motivated, and a part of our running family. Here's to another hundred of sharing stories, triumphs, and, of course, our love for running. Join us, won't you?

Speaker 5

That was our friend Devin Devin . Thank you so much . We have more of that coming up , my friends , but welcome to episode 100 of the Rise and Run Podcast . Hey , bob , I'm here this evening with the whole gang . I'm here with John . Hey , how you doing , alicia ? Hello Lexi , hello Greg . Hey , hey , hey .

Speaker 1

Jack Hiya .

Speaker 5

And Allie .

Speaker 6

Hi friends .

Speaker 5

We are really excited to have you with us this evening . We're always excited , but we're especially excited tonight for this , what we think of as a very special episode .

Speaker 3

I know we're going to do a lot of reminiscing on tonight's episode , but I think we need to start off with a big thank you to our quote unquote listener intro for this week .

I mean , if you really think about it , if it wasn't for Devin from Zippity Tees , we would not have our brand oh , it's not brand spanking new anymore but our logo that we came up with . I can't remember how many episodes into that was .

And again , to think how early on in the iteration of this podcast and she was willing to help us out in such a massive , massive way I know I'm still forever in debt to her in Carrie and everything like that and she has such cool designs Her latest run Disney drop that they did looks phenomenal . Lexi , I think you bought a bunch of them , right ?

So it's you know . So we're so appreciative of everything that Devin has done for us , both being a guest on this podcast , but also from the creative side as well too . So , Devin , thank you so much .

Speaker 6

We love you , Devin .

Speaker 5

Right now , let's go back in time a bit . Let's go back to October of 2021 , when the Rise and Run podcast sounded like this oh man , the 3 AM alarm . I haven't heard the 3 AM alarm in a long time Time . To Rise and Run gang . Yay , hey , calm down over there . The 3 AM alarm means one thing to me means Run Disney is back and I'm excited .

And I'm not sure that 3 AM is going to be early enough this year for Wine and Dine , but we'll get into that in a little bit . Hi , everybody , welcome to the first episode of the Rise and Run podcast . I've got four friends , four Run Disney friends , with me today . I've got Alicia . Hi , I've got Greg . Hey , Jack .

Speaker 11

Hey .

Speaker 5

And Lexi . Hi we're going to , we're going to and , oh and yeah , I'm Bob , I'm your host for this episode . We're missing one other member of our group , john . He'll be with us next week and there we were just gosh , just a little less than two years ago Running . At that episode we had a race report . We had the race report , horn .

We actually did say happy running at the end , but not like we do now . Our close off was sign off was something like happy running everyone and the alarm's gone off . When the alarm goes off , it's time to rise and run . That was our sign off then Happy running . When did we lock in on happy running ? What episode .

Speaker 11

I'm going to , I'm going to guess and say three .

Speaker 5

No , it wasn't three , although you're not far off , lexi . Okay . It was seven .

Speaker 12

I was going to guess five , episode seven .

Speaker 5

We locked into happy running . I don't know why we just did been with us ever since there was no , and if you run you are our friend . That didn't come for a little while .

Speaker 11

I remember our conversation about what we wanted to say . I remember going back and forth trying to figure out like we got it . We wanted to end it , but we didn't know how .

Speaker 5

Well , we had two episodes where we finished with and if you run , you are my friend , and then we changed it to our friend and it's been that ever since . But you and actually that tagline and I've told this before that came from a golf instructor book .

I stole it from the forward where the author said this book is dedicated to my friends and if you play golf , you are my friend , and I figured we'd use that for running . We made it our friend . Anybody want to guess what episode that came along ?

Speaker 3

Great , I know you guys love to harass me about this , but I want to say the Thanksgiving episode , episode six . No , it was later than that , yeah .

Speaker 1

Wait , I'm so 12? .

Speaker 5

It actually surprised me .

Speaker 6

I want to say it was after me because I was around right . It was You're right , you were around it and Ali came along .

Speaker 5

That's closer . Ali came along in episode 21 as a guest and then came back as a regular almost right away . I don't know if you were right the next week , but it wasn't much longer than Ali was with .

Speaker 6

I'm hard to get rid of .

Speaker 5

If you run , you are my friend first appeared in episode 40 . Wow , which surprised me . It was tough to find . I'm starting at three , going to the end , going no it's not here . Four , no , it's not here . Five Then I finally got smart and I jumped three or four at a time . Episode 40 .

Looking at the countdown , one and I now ten this many no shoes off , just two hands Ten weeks away . What ? Yeah , crazy , yeah , we're getting there , guys , we're getting there . Long weekend run for Wynondine . Let's look at the challenge .

This is the first double up for Wynondine . If you're doing the challenge , you've got a one mile run followed by an eight mile run . I bet it's probably a one mile walk in Jeff's training schedule .

Speaker 6

Yeah , usually it is .

Speaker 5

Followed by an eight mile run . 5k training started this week for Wynondine , which , as we said , now ten weeks away , marathon weekend , now 19 weeks away , working on the challenges , it's a three mile run for the marathon by itself . Notice , I didn't say just the marathon or marathon For the marathon by itself . It's a four mile run .

I'm not sure why , but I trust Mr Galloway's training process . He plans and that's what we've got . Week eight for Wynondine , week nine for marathon weekend . Big day today . The registration season is now over . We've registered for springtime . Surprise , who's going Besides ? I'm going .

Speaker 1

I'm in for the challenge .

Speaker 3

I am in for the challenge as well .

Speaker 5

Cool that it Just the three of us .

Speaker 12

My heart is in for the challenge , but my wallet is not .

Speaker 5

That's right . We discussed this . We discussed this in 99 . Yes .

Speaker 11

Unfortunately , I am going to do the virtual 5K .

Speaker 15

Okay .

Speaker 11

As soon as the virtual opens up .

Speaker 15

That's Friday . Thanks , tomorrow actually .

Speaker 5

Yeah , tomorrow Episode wise yeah Thanks .

Speaker 11

But I can't say no to a Neverland themed medal . I mean I got you .

Speaker 3

It's going to be epic man , I mean listen all the Disneyland people are pretty salty that the 5K is themed To Neverland , because they're thinking now , okay , tinkerbell's not coming back to Disneyland , but we shall have to wait and see that and they need to bring back Avengers .

Speaker 12

Come on , run Disney . You know you want to Just think Avengers assemble yeah .

Speaker 5

We'll have to see you , Jack . I thought registration went smoothly this morning .

Speaker 15

It went pretty good . 5k sold out early and then later on , the challenge sold out . Everything else is still open .

Speaker 5

Yeah , as of this recording , as of Tuesday evening here , eight o'clock Eastern time , I spent a bunch of time in the springtime surprise community chat with I have no idea how many folks were there . There were a slew of folks there and we all were helping one another out and , as far as I know , everyone there got in .

You know , one thing that never ceases to amaze me and it's a function of age kids is that I can remember , of course , when just trying to make a phone call to Europe and I'm going somewhere where this okay was you had to make a reservation for it Literally extremely challenging to do .

This morning I got into the springtime surprise because a friend in the Netherlands sent me a message and said hey , bob , I've got a link for you if you want it . So Danny , our buddy in the Netherlands , Danny , got me into the springtime surprise . Might have made it anyway , who knows , but because of him , and I think that's amazing .

So thanks , I appreciate that . Again , a lot of help to everybody today and I thought , of course , our buddy , mark , was there and he was extremely helpful , as he is . I know John was passing out some links and we got folks in , so that was fantastic Good teamwork .

Speaker 3

Yeah , no , it was a great team effort overall , yeah , but , like we mentioned before , as of recording , you know , the only things that did sell out on Tuesday day of recording were the 5k and the challenge . It looks like in John , you throw some stats for us right before we started recording . I guess last year the 5k sold out in 30 minutes .

This year it took 45 . But where things switched up , though , was last year it took six days for the challenge to sell out , and today it took what about an hour to 90 minutes or something , maybe a little longer .

Speaker 15

Yeah , it went down about 1115 . So an hour for 15 minutes .

Speaker 3

OK , yeah , so a slight change there , so really interesting to see . But the one thing I will say , the biggest springtime surprise that I encountered today was I did not realize that springtime surprise weekend is also Dapper Day .

Speaker 11

Yeah , I saw that , I heard that .

Speaker 3

So apparently on Saturday of the weekend or the 10k day , Dapper Day will be occurring in Epcot , I believe , and then the day of the 10-miler on Sunday will be Magic Kingdom . So if you're going to those parks , bring out your Sunday best and get dressed up and join in the fun .

Can you imagine wearing a full suit and then having your medals around you and everything like that ?

Speaker 5

That would be another picture . Well , friends , for tonight's episode we want to look back on the first 99 . So we're going to hop in our Mandalorian and but , yeah , yeah , yeah , you may or may we've referred to that before . You may not know exactly what we're talking about .

It was episode 55 and it went like this let's go back in time , let's go back a week . We don't usually do that , but in this case it's for somebody special . Let's go to a New York Island , florida , and Jack's going to tell us about what is it ? The Zuma runs that you did .

Speaker 12

Zuma series .

Speaker 5

Yeah .

Speaker 12

You guys need to get into a Mandalorian and go back to the future .

Speaker 5

Not a Mandalorian , no no a Dallorian .

Speaker 15

That's John Dallorian .

Speaker 12

John Dallorian . Okay , I didn't remember how that was played up , so this funny .

Speaker 5

Oh yeah , oh yeah , I mean , and you just , you just went right with it , jumping on Mandalorian , and I'm thinking what did I hear ?

Speaker 12

It made sense to me I was about to go in description .

Speaker 5

It makes sense to all of us now , but it didn't at the time and it was fun .

Speaker 3

But , Jack , that's what is the beautiful thing about you is that even in your mix ups you are so confident in you know , in in what you say and what you think , and you stick by it . 110% , and again , I love that about you and I never , ever wanted to change . Thank you .

Speaker 15

And after that episode Christopher Lloyd was cast in the Mandalorian .

Speaker 6

I know , that was funny .

Speaker 12

I'm going to make a promise to you guys One of these run Disney races I'm going to make myself . I'm going to make a Dallorian at a cardboard boxes .

I'm going to put like a little shoulder strap so I can look like I'm in the car , and then I'm going to wear a Mandalorian suit just so I can go to one of the races , because it's still technically Disney if you wear a Mandalorian costume and you can put a little like globe in the back with a little Grogu in it , so he has this little like the outy

thing . He would have a fun run .

Speaker 3

And I've always said that like I want us like start like a go fund me so that we can raise money , so Jack can go to New York City . Because the Broadway musical Back to the Future just opened up and , um great , it's getting mixed reviews , but from what I hear it is a technical marvel to see though .

So , it's one of those things where I would just love to get a picture of Jack standing next to Roger Bart , which here's your Disney connection . Roger Bart is the singing voice of Hercules . So one of our favorite tunes go the Distance . So that would just be an epic picture to have in Rise and Run fame .

Speaker 12

Oh cry of happiness , like life made .

Speaker 5

So when you hear us talking about jumping in our Mandalorian , you'll know what we're talking about . So great , scott . So let's jump in our Mandalorian . Go all the way back to episode three . Now , episode three provided a couple first . Actually , episode three was the first time we were in the library on Apple podcasts .

Of course , once we got approved , one , two and three all popped at the same time , but we weren't on there until we recorded episode three . We had a little less than 500 downloads total at the time , and a good friend of mine , a friend I'd made before , way before we started this podcast , mandy , was our very first guest . Mandy had run the Boston Marathon .

We had her on as our very first guest and Mandy had this to say about the Rise and Run podcast hey , mandy , good to see you . Thanks for joining us . Nice to be here , bob . This is exciting . You're our first guest on the Rise and Run podcast , so congratulations .

Speaker 19

Wow , that's quite an honor to be the first guest of the Rise and Run on the baby podcast here .

Speaker 5

I know that means a lot to you . That's good . I don't know if it came through or not what that means a lot to you . I was a little sarcastic , I was a little baby podcast we're not . And then I thought about it . I went well , yeah , you know two episodes in the can . We're recording number three . We've got 500 downloads .

That was probably a pretty succinct definition . We've come a ways since then .

Speaker 3

And , even though it was only three episodes in , it was in that episode that I realized the potential that this podcast would have in terms of incorporating stories that would have an effect on people .

I mean , I don't think all of us were there for the interview per se , but I remember Mandy talking about walking around town with her Boston Marathon jacket and her getting emotional during that conversation , and that was the first time that it was indicative to me that the sport and this community is really , really important to people and does have a lasting

impact on their life .

Speaker 5

Yeah , I think it goes without saying that Mandy qualified for Boston and she actually . She hurt herself in that race . She had a calf muscle tear towards the end , finished anyway , finished . She didn't quite make her goal . Because of that she went back the next year and finished in under 330 . So she's a really strong runner .

But since episode three we've grown just a little bit . In fact , the Rise and Run podcast has now been downloaded on all the continents except Antarctica and I'm not sure about that because the service we use doesn't count Antarctica , so it's possible someone down there in one of the scientific areas has listened to this podcast .

We've been downloaded in a total of 82 different countries . That's remarkable . Wow , that's crazy . We have , and there are various services that tell you where you are and how you rank amongst other running podcasts .

We have charted on those in Australia , germany , france , norway and Ireland and we've actually made it into the top 10 of all running podcasts at one time or another In Canada , netherlands , the United States , china , israel , finland , ukraine and , believe it or not , gang . We have been the number one running podcast at some point in Panama , mexico and Croatia .

We got downloaded A lot of those are non-English speaking countries . It kind of boggles the mind , but and one of the reasons I wanted to mention that is we kind of gloss over a little bit . Thank you to the people in all those countries who are listening to us . I don't know who you are . I'd love to know .

Shoot us a note if you're listening from Panama or any of the countries I mentioned . But thank you for doing it . It's just , mandi was not wrong , but we're no longer a baby podcast . One more comment about episode three . Episode three was the first time we did a race roll call . It was the episode prior to wine and dine .

It was the episode prior to run Disney coming back from COVID , and we did a roll call of the names . Now if you've listened to roll calls recently , you know the pretty big take awhile . In episode three we had 18 names . It took approximately 45 seconds to read them .

For comparison , right now and I'm sure we'll add more there are 160 names on the marathon weekend roll call . So again , a little bit bigger than we were nearly two years ago . All right let's take a little break on this trip down memory lane . We'll hop out of our Mandalorian and we'll be back in a little bit of time .

Memory lane will hop out of our Mandalorian and some of the gang has been wanting for a while now to play the rise and run version of Never have I Ever .

Speaker 1

Yes . So Jack specifically had thought of this first , but both her and I have been saying let's do this . So today is the day that we're going to play .

Never have I Ever , and if you are listening and want to play along , keep score and you can message us and let us know how many points you got , and we will also create an image that we'll be sharing on our social media so you can play along as well . So I will start . Never have I Ever changed my shoes or socks into race . Oh yeah .

Speaker 6

Like I do it regularly . That's part of my In the middle of the race .

Speaker 11

Yeah , People do that and I've never done that .

Speaker 12

I've never done that before . I have and it was my first time ever doing it was for the Black Canyon 100K .

Speaker 3

Well , that makes sense .

Speaker 11

Yeah , we're in Ultra . I get that Ion's long .

Speaker 1

They're really soggy . Yeah , you go through water and everything , yeah .

Speaker 6

No , I do it every marathon .

Speaker 3

I was going to say because the first time I saw it , I was like I'm going to tear the crap out of me because I thought something was wrong and you weren't going to finish the marathon in 2022 .

Speaker 6

And I got really really nervous Like who got it in your shoes ? Nobody I like . Sit down , I kick off my shoes , I go in my race pack and I put on my new socks and it is literally like putting on brand new feet . So when your feet get super tired around mile 18 , 20 , it's like I don't know , it's like a wind in your sails .

I'm weirded out that I'm the only one . But I mean , I'm technically , I'm kind of there .

Speaker 12

Yeah , you did it too . I did an abition .

Speaker 6

Just sit down on the side of the course .

Speaker 1

See , and I would think I would get yelled at , because one time I had a rock in my shoe and I like moved to the side and like trying to get it out and I had three different people come up to me Are you okay , do you need medical attention ? I'm like I have a rock in my shoe . And then I sat down to get it out and they were like are you sure ?

I'm like I have a rock ? And they were like oh , okay . You just have a rock in your shoe .

Speaker 5

I'm glad they cared about you . Yeah , yeah , I've never done that , I think .

Speaker 1

I look like I was dying .

Speaker 5

I almost had a shoe come off one time in a race , but I've never taken it off deliberately .

Speaker 11

No , I feel like whenever I get to the end of the race , I just want to take my shoes off , and so if I did it beforehand , I feel like I wouldn't want to keep going .

Speaker 5

You think it was the end of the race . You're like okay , I'm done All right .

Speaker 3

All right , I got one here . Now this is run . Disney specific Never have I ever written an attraction during a race .

Speaker 12

Oh , you took mine .

Speaker 15

Nope .

Speaker 1

Nope , nope , no , I've wanted to .

Speaker 3

Same . I need to change that one of these days .

Speaker 5

I plan to . I haven't done it yet . I plan to .

Speaker 1

At least the only one that has yeah .

Speaker 6

I'm losing this game . You're winning , I guess .

Speaker 15

Who knows ?

Speaker 6

You're experienced . I am . I have told this story many times . My only goal last year on during the marathon was to ride Everest and I finally did it and again , like putting wind in your sails , it was the best thing ever and I probably should have just changed my socks while I was on Everest . So I've got something for you .

Never have I ever forgotten something really important at the race thinking like race or shoes , or your race , bib or something .

Speaker 12

Oh , easily , easily , Like when I mean Black Canyon was a dumpster fire . I forgot my some of my fuel I meant to buy at the store , went to the store and everything it was on my list and then I never looked at the list .

Speaker 6

That's a long race to not have fuel for , I think .

Speaker 12

I have fuel , but I would . I specifically needed my applesauce packets and I meant to go buy more , and those are things that have been proven to be work for me yeah , and I only need everything for those , and I sucked them down , man , right off the bat .

I was like well , I only remembered when I was like a third of the way through the race that I did not buy more .

Speaker 6

I know John saved me once at a race when I forgot my fuel and all I had was a tangerine .

Speaker 15

For , like I , think it was a half marathon . We swapped out a tangerine for a race fuel .

Speaker 6

Yeah , I had three tangerines because I was juggling them .

Speaker 15

Oh yes .

Speaker 1

You were walking to the start line .

Speaker 5

Yeah , okay , first run Disney event for me half marathon one and nine 2016, . You guys know what the sock liner is in your shoe right , it's that , that little thin thing that comes out .

Speaker 6

Your insoles .

Speaker 5

Yeah , yeah , I think I think sock liners . Right now I'm not positive , but you know what it is . Yeah , I had a problem prior with planter fasciitis so I had special inserts that I was putting in and out of different shoes that I was wearing during training .

I get to Disney world , I get ready for the half marathon , which was the only event I ran that year . I look at my shoes nothing , there's nothing in there . The sock liner and special insert and I go . Well , I guess we're running in these and you know what it worked .

I I really , to be honest , I didn't even notice , but that's a relatively important thing to forget .

Speaker 11

Yeah , the only thing that I've forgotten , which I've told this story before , and Jack likes telling the story toilet paper . No , that's not the story that I don't intentionally take toilet paper to erase , but I should . No , was at the Grey Smoky Mountains race when I forgot a container to put my oatmeal in before the race started . Oh , I remember the story .

yes , and so I had an extra water bottle and I tried to use that to put in the microwave , and it just did not work . No , it just did not work as planned . You couldn't drink your oatmeal . No , I could not drink my oatmeal , and I didn't have a spoon either .

Speaker 12

All right , you guys , I got one . Never have I ever finished a Disney race with a drink or a food that I bought in the parks during a race .

Speaker 5

Oh , I think .

Speaker 12

No .

Speaker 1

I haven't done that . I didn't get anybody .

Speaker 5

You've never done . I have John's smiling .

Speaker 12

What did you do ?

Speaker 15

I did not do it . I mean me and Greg were gonna do it , but we said , if we stopped , we were never getting going again .

Speaker 11

Half a point in yeah .

Speaker 5

Really , you guys Nobody .

Speaker 1

Did you get a ?

Speaker 5

tipsy ducks in love . Now . I've only done it once .

Speaker 6

Say again yeah , you got a tipsy ducks in love or something , didn't you ?

Speaker 5

That's right . Yeah , that's the only time I've done it . But yeah , I did that . That's a pretty common thing and I expect I'll do it again . But yeah , I did that . The funny story to that one and I've told this a bunch of times my friend Mary . I bought her one Tipsy ducks in love's China's Joy of Tea Pavilion .

I really like the drink , but they pour the bourbon on top at the end . You have to stir it up . Yeah , I still can picture Mary's face when she took her first sip of that thing .

Speaker 6

Oh , oh yeah , I always wanted to stop with a Mickey pretzel , but all of the things , all of the carts that sell Mickey pretzels aren't open at that time , or like way out of the way of the course . So , ren Disney , if you're listening , please open the carts for Mickey pretzels , I think a lot of people want to cross the finish line with Mickey pretzel .

Speaker 3

Well , either that or Ali , when you get to Animal Kingdom next year for Marathon , you have to ride Everest three times , so that will delay you a little bit and then the carts will be open and you can have your pretzel .

Speaker 5

That's fair . So I was kind of surprised by that response gang . Yeah , I thought somebody else would have done that , I've got one .

Speaker 11

Okay , never have I ever been late to the start of a race , oh , of any race .

Speaker 12

I almost wait when we mean start does it mean like the race has already started or like the race is about to start ?

Speaker 11

You missed the time that you were supposed to start .

Speaker 12

Yes . Mm-hmm . Amelia . Island . I didn't realize what time the race started . I thought it started at like I don't remember if it was like 7.15 and it started at 7 . And it started at 7 , I remember getting there and the corral that I , or the timing group that I was supposed to go with , that I had planned they were gone .

I was like oh my , and I had to go to the bathroom too . I was like dear God , this is horrible . Now I slept in . I like snoozed my alarm two or three times . I got plenty of time .

Speaker 6

No , I my bus got lost on the way to the 2020 Marathon , which was my first marathon ever , so I was sitting on that bus just not being okay and they did delay the start .

But when we got there , as soon as I got into my corral , we took off , which maybe was for the best , Because , honestly , sitting in a corral with your nerves- I don't know , sitting on the bus with your nerves was pretty bad , as I was like anxiously watching the time take away .

Speaker 5

but my first ever organized run was the Great Aloha Race in Honolulu in February of 1986 . And they ran buses from the well , you could bus either way , start to , and it was a point to point race , but I drove to the end and bus to the beginning and the buses were a mess , absolute mess . So we get to downtown Honolulu .

This event has like 45 or 50,000 runners . They had none , none , when we got to the start . So yeah , it was my first ever long run . It was eight point something miles and I'm thinking , oh , my goodness , I have to run this all by myself . But because it was so big , I caught the pack pretty quickly , not that that took .

I mean , when I say I caught the pack , I caught the back of the pack which was people pushing baby strollers and things like that . But yeah , you know what it ended up working out to my benefit . Because here I am , golly , I don't know At the time , I'm probably running 12 minute miles , I don't know , and .

But I'm passing everybody left and right and I'm feeling great , come on , follow me , you can do it . But yeah , I remember that . That's the only time . Very very first organized run I was ever at .

Speaker 11

Mine was at Jeff's race two years ago . Oh , Bob , I don't know if you remember I was meeting up with you and Becky and I had over slept that morning and I remember waking up and thank the Lord that I had laid out my running stuff , which I never do .

I never laid my running stuff out but for whatever reason I had the night before and I grabbed and I threw it on and I remember parking and running like up that hill going .

Speaker 5

Oh yeah , that's a killer hill .

Speaker 11

Yeah . And I was like I've got to make it before the start . And literally I got there , I said hi to you and then we started .

Speaker 5

Yeah , I remember you making , I remember wondering where is she , where is she ? But you got there for the start . I do recall that , Yep .

Speaker 15

Have any of you ever skipped plans with your friends to do a training run ?

Speaker 11

Yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah , yeah , I suppose , Especially if it's a big one .

Speaker 12

Yeah , big training run .

Speaker 5

Yeah , specifically I can't tell you because I don't , but I'm sure we all have yeah .

Speaker 11

Follow up question . Never have I ever missed work for a training run . Oh yeah , guilty yeah .

Speaker 1

I've done that too , no .

Speaker 3

All right , I haven't missed work , but I've taken like PTO or like or I planned like a comp day or something like that around it so I could like I remember it was my dopey or no , sorry , it was my goofy simulation right before Marathon Week in 2022 . And I remember I had a comp day that I needed to use , so I used it .

I dropped my daughter off at daycare and then I ran 24 miles or something like that .

Speaker 12

Oh gosh .

Speaker 3

And then I went back and picked her up because it literally took that long . So , no , I haven't specifically played hooky from work , though for a while .

Speaker 15

Well , I had a lunch meeting one time after lunch at one o'clock and I was doing my lunch run . So I'll go out my lunch to run . So I blew the meeting off to finish my lunch run .

Speaker 11

Yeah , I hope no one that I work with is listening to this . But , I said that I had an appointment in the morning and so I had to you told me that I remember that . Specifically , I said I had to come in late because I had an appointment and I was doing my long run . I mean it's an appointment .

Speaker 3

That is an appointment , and you can email HR at hollywoodpayrollscom .

Speaker 11

Yeah , I did finish the run though .

Speaker 5

That's one I haven't done , to be honest . So no , no for me .

Speaker 12

I think I got another one , you guys . Now this one , I don't know . I feel like there's always these scary stories of people going on and run Disney Buzz that has gotten lost to the start line . So never have I ever been on a Disney Buzz that had gotten lost to the start line .

Speaker 6

I mean I already told my story . Oh , I got two people . Yeah , it is the worst feeling in the entire world . In your head you're like it's literally 10 minutes from my hotel . How did you get lost for an hour ?

Speaker 12

To be fair , they're mirrors drivers that don't usually drive on property like that . So , they are given their route , but they can't use their phone to actually get to the location , like mapping it out wise .

So they just kind of told where they go and I remember somebody was telling me that they I think I heard this in like a corral or something that they had to have . They gave the directions as they were , they had their phone . They gave the directions as the driver was driving was telling them to go .

Speaker 1

Then , on one of those buses , we as runners knew exactly where to go and pulled out our phones and told the bus driver how to get to where we were going , because they didn't have any clue . And we're like no , you need to turn here and go here . Yeah , actually one of those .

I was on the bus with Tom and Diane from the Will Run for a podcast and , yeah , it was fun stuff .

Speaker 12

We were lost in Fort Wilderness and then , yeah , you know , I think I heard one time where someone had got the first 3 AM bus ride and they almost missed their start of their corral because the bus driver had a loop around multiple times to figure out how to enter .

Speaker 6

I had no idea that they couldn't use a GPS and that they were just figuring it out as they went .

Speaker 15

I think they're using them now , Because also they're also not from Florida . They could be from New York , Connecticut , all around . They need 100 bus drivers to come in . That's how they got them .

Speaker 12

Wow , I didn't know that .

Speaker 15

So I had one too . So we were going to the race . The bus driver kind of got lost and that road outside of the boardwalk was a bonavista drive , I guess it is . He decides to make a U-turn right in the middle of the road to back up and go around . Yeah , it was like we're like we're going to be all dead here .

Speaker 1

Yeah , I've been on a bus that did a U-turn in a really awkward place and it was not good .

Speaker 11

I have another one .

Speaker 12

Do it .

Speaker 11

Never have I ever almost gotten hit by a car while out on a run .

Speaker 1

Really , I have many , many times I bring the law all the time . Because I will go at lights . Specifically , I'll go when it says don't go Because it's safer and I know there's no cars around than when it says to go .

I don't know if you guys have those blinky yellow lights in your states or turn lanes , but the go for me and that are at the same time , and way more than once I have had multiple drivers not know that they also have to yield to the pedestrians and yeah .

Speaker 12

Oh yeah , this one guy almost . He missed me by about a foot . I was just like , oh , that's great . And he looked at me and was like , oh , and he looked completely shocked and I had the right of way , because it has a little walking person or whatever . I 100% had the right of way . And I was like , oh cool , I got it .

And then all of a sudden he's zooming too . And then the moment he sees me , he slowed down immediately after the fact that he almost hit me . Just look at me and have that shocked face . I was just like OK .

Speaker 11

Yeah , mine happened probably two months ago , beginning of the summer I don't know how long ago it was and I was outside where my house is and I guess I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed that morning , but I was going .

It was like the entrance to a subdivision , so there wasn't any light or anything , and I walked across and in my head , I think , I knew that he was not going to stop and so I moved out of the way and I said really Out loud you told me that and they heard you , didn't they give you a ?

Speaker 12

look or something .

Speaker 11

No , he pulled . I went around him , I went behind him and he pulled around . He's like I'm so sorry , sweetheart , I didn't see you and I just gave him a dirty look and I kept going . I was like you need to learn your lesson . And then I felt bad about giving him a dirty look . I should have said , no , you're good .

But seriously , I was so mad , yeah .

Speaker 1

Lots of distracted drivers out there Be safe runners .

Speaker 6

My favorite is that the maddest Lexi got was when she was just so mad was to go , really yeah . I gave him a dirty look . That she immediately regretted giving him .

Speaker 12

I know exactly how Lexi would say it . I feel like I could imitate you pretty good . I would see your facial reactions and everything .

Speaker 6

I would have had a few more colorful words .

Speaker 5

Y'all bet you would , I'll bet you would , alex We'll see , usually I don't say anything In my head .

Speaker 11

I usually go , I'm walking here .

Speaker 5

There you go , dustin Hoffman , boom Perfect .

Speaker 11

I don't ever say that out loud .

Speaker 6

Midnight cowboy . I'll do one that I probably will immediately regret saying after I say it , but I'm going to do it anyway . Never have I ever eaten my race fuel as a snack because I was hungry and there were no snacks in the kitchen . Yes , I've done that .

Speaker 11

Oh yeah .

Speaker 15

I'm a good company .

Speaker 3

Those waffles yeah . I know exactly the honey stinger waffles . Those are so good .

Speaker 12

And I like the jellybee gummy . I did try that yeah that's true .

Speaker 11

It's like everybody yeah . I love the gummy . Well , I was hungry and I was late for something , and I had a goo in my car and I ate a goo . I actually did that recently .

Speaker 6

That's a little farther than I would go . I think it's the goo . That's where I'd cut it off , but not Bob .

Speaker 5

No , it's a no for me . But then again , my race fuel is kind of goofy Because you got poptarts . Poptarts Rice , Krispie Creek . I would eat them anyway , so I don't Goos . I tried them several occasions .

Speaker 12

No , thank you , you need the goo chews . The goo chews are a lot better than those actual .

Speaker 5

I've done a little bit of that too . They are better . You're right , no doubt .

Speaker 1

Do you like honey consistency ?

Speaker 5

No , it's all .

Speaker 3

I'm good , bob is sweet enough . He doesn't need honey .

Speaker 5

I'm good it works for me .

Speaker 6

I'll never forget the poptarts story , when we were running the race together and you were just picking out pieces of a broken poptart .

Speaker 3

Oh , that's , true , yeah , they got down my shorts , yeah , I was still waiting for the toaster to ding to let us know they were done .

Speaker 6

But then I remember you telling me after the race you went and took a shower and there was just poptarts . Poptarts stuck to you .

Speaker 5

Still coming out of my shorts . Yeah , little pieces of poptart , yep , yep . Thanks for sharing , allie .

Speaker 6

I'm sorry .

Speaker 5

No , it's good . It's good , my friend it's good , here's one .

Speaker 15

See how bad you guys really are . Has anyone ever cut the course on a race ?

Speaker 12

No , no way , absolutely not . No , that's illegal .

Speaker 11

I'm not going to lie , I've thought about it . Oh yeah , let's see .

Speaker 12

Let's see you did . You cheated one time . Yes , you did .

Speaker 15

Oh , just called her out right on the pod .

Speaker 12

How dare you the Thanksgiving Day race ? We did .

Speaker 11

No , that's not no , that's not , he's kind of in the course she signed up for a 10K .

Speaker 12

10K was a two-loop course and she decides . Before we get done with the 5K , I'm just going to do a 5K . You know what she does . She's just the top of her age group for a 10K with a power .

Speaker 3

Jack , you realize you're talking about your landlord here . She could have evicted you at any moment , right now , actually you know what ?

Speaker 11

I'm going to kick you out in two days . I leave for Ohio in two days , so don't do that no , OK . So the story behind that was the 5K and the 10K were the same course . One was two loops , one was one loop , and I was injured .

Speaker 12

Oh yeah , ok , I feel bad now , so I take it back . I take it back , yeah .

Speaker 11

I was having a really bad plantar fasciitis flare up and the race announcers and on the thing for the race said that you could do whatever distance you wanted .

Speaker 5

Now there was some illusion there to the fact that you ended up with an age group award because of this .

Speaker 11

No , I did not get the age group OK . No , she got into it . I don't , I don't , I don't , as long as I'm in my brain .

Speaker 5

You just decided to . I I'm totally on board with that . That's not cutting the course , I agree . Now , if you did it and then said , hey look , I won the 10k , that's a different . But you didn't do that .

Speaker 6

So Right no we're good . I think I might have like skipped a cone or two if I like Was jumping around somebody . That was like doing something dangerous , but I never like cut corners or anything like that .

Speaker 15

I even like that last cone , that last cone at the corner . You didn't like cut in the middle . No , I like .

Speaker 6

I feel so guilty about it that I always like come back in and then like turn around , find the cone . I like cut out and but like I've come , I've gone off the course and been like this feels wrong .

Speaker 11

Well , yeah , like even if the course is shortened for whatever reason , or like my g , yeah , my app doesn't say You've done this amount . I , I will make it sure that I do that amount so what did everybody end up with ?

Speaker 1

for your score , I have four .

Speaker 6

I have seven that's impressive .

Speaker 11

Yeah , I have five .

Speaker 15

I got four I .

Speaker 12

Have five . I thought I had six . So some discrepancy there . I don't know .

Speaker 3

I'm really lame . I only have one . I'm just eating the . Just eating the . The race fuel is a snack . That was the only one I had .

Speaker 12

Greg , you know what that means you're a daredevil .

Speaker 1

No , I thought you are too , because you said well , you said no , I know I never .

Speaker 3

I never skipped work . I took off from that .

Speaker 11

Okay , so Clarification . So if it's , if it's that it's .

Speaker 6

If it's counting things that we've never gotten caught doing , then you would win Greg , and if it's being shameful and having done things , then I have one , and so I'm declaring both of Greg and I the winner .

Speaker 5

Okay , fun funds over . Let's get back in the Mandalorian and Take a trip down memory lane to 1985 . Really , really neat things . That we've experienced at rise and run is the tremendous Number of folks who have appeared with us on various episodes .

Let's listen to a couple of them , starting with this very familiar voice how did you originally get involved with run Disney and become the official training consultant ?

Speaker 20

the original contact was at the very first Race that Disney did , and this is way before run Disney was established as a brand . It was the Walt Disney World Marathon . That was the race . It was the only race in 1994 . Way back then in the 1990s and my friend John Hughes was the race director .

He just recently retired from the Disney races but he has up until this point been the primo race director and he's he's amazing , but he was trying to assemble a group of world-class athletes to sort of lead the race and then the Disney folks were trying to blend all of this in and it was . It was so new and so exciting .

And and then the one snafu was there were busing problems that first year and we had to wait at the starting line for over 30 minutes before the start .

And it happened to be one of those cold years and the those of us who were used at that time to Wearing a singlet and a pair of sports even on a cold day , we suffered a little bit pretty miserable yeah but the those problems have mostly gone away now and the as the years went by , the Disney folks kept inviting me back and when they decided to do run

Disney , they had internal conversations as to who could they choose as a spokesperson , and they had various people that they had put out there .

And then finally , and one of the meetings I'm told , they were talking about people who had come every year and and somebody said well , you know , jeff Galway has been here every year , and so they voted and I won that vote and I'm forever thankful of that . It's just a wonderful association from the beginning and going all the way through .

Speaker 3

So I mean it's so wonderful that we've been able to have Jeff on the podcast several times .

I mean , regardless if you use his training plans or not , that man has probably impacted your life because we all have the connected bond of run Disney and you know he is , he is the face and he is the soul of this organization and I know I just I love him the death and I know so many others do .

You know , and it's even kind of crazy to think that you know there was a time when this , you know , the seven of us sat down and like do you think we could get Jeff on the podcast ? And to think now We've had him on several times is is really mind-blowing and he always gives us Such attention and and I just I really really appreciate it .

But another person who I know all seven of us really do appreciate Is our good friend and coach , chris Twigs .

Speaker 24

Hey friends , this is coach Chris Twigs and if you listen to the rise and run podcast then you know you are my friend . I am here in Lviv , ukraine , and I was just listening to the latest rise and run podcast , episode number 98 .

I cannot believe you guys are coming up on episode 100 and I just wanted to thank you guys for everything you have done to make the running community more exciting , and I just love this podcast , love what you folks are doing . Keep running , keep walking . Most of all , keep enjoying every single run that you do and keep recording these awesome podcasts .

Speaker 6

Thank you so much , coach Twigs . We know we rely on you to give us great advice and we have a clip from episode 30 when you explain how run , walk , run can make most of us faster .

Speaker 19

What I recommend to people that are hesitant to try it is Either run a magic mile so you can get a good predictor of what your pace could be at those shorter distances , or take one of your , take one of your recent race times and you know , see what that pace is per mile . Look at our chart . That's on Jeff gallowaycom .

We've got a chart that give you a recommended run walk ratio for that pace and Use the recommended ratio from the beginning of the race to run that average pace . And it really takes trying it to be a believer in it . And it did for me . I , it absolutely did for me . I didn't .

I didn't believe this would work and Until I decided to try it in a race and it just so happened . The first race I tried it , it was a marathon , but I was blown away . I got a PR . It didn't hurt as much as I did , but I was blown away . I got a PR , it didn't hurt as much and and I was sold .

So it just takes figuring out what the right ratio is and and our chart has that . If you are faster than what our chart Shows , email Chris at Jeff gallowaycom and I'll . I'll give you a recommended ratio to try it , the pace you're gonna go .

Speaker 5

One of our most popular podcast , most listened to was episode 51 , when the balloon ladies visited us and gave us this advice you actually are a Pleasure to meet .

Speaker 16

Well , I will tell you one recommendation I would have for folks , if they're . You know you're training , you're training , you're keeping the 16 minute pace . When you get in your corral , when you get there at three in the morning , get as far in front of the corral as possible .

Speaker 6

It's that buffer .

Speaker 16

They're hanging . Yeah the folks are hanging out in the back . I want to be in the dead last . I To the front of the crowd to give yourself as much of a buffer time as possible , because then folks yell at us and they say Well , what are you going to ? The bathroom , you know , does that include bathroom breaks ? And I was joke .

We don't go to the bathroom .

Speaker 5

That's part of balloon lady training no bathrooms .

Speaker 28

You have to practice . Another thing to practice go to the bathroom when you're sweaty and you have to figure out putting your pants back on .

Speaker 15

That's a good point . So that was some great advice from the balloon ladies , and now we have some messages from some of our past guests .

Speaker 10

Hey friends , kg , for living the KG life here . I want to send my friends at the rise and run podcast a huge , gigantic , amazing , magical Pixie dust filled . That was so great to meet all of you and to be on your show . Here's 200 more .

Speaker 9

Hello rise and run family . This is Tom from the will run for podcast . Just wanted to say congratulations to the gang on their 100th episode . That's amazing . I know we have a Little bit of a silly rivalry going on , but we absolutely love everything you do . You have the most amazing guests and content .

We love all of your voices , including Bob's and , I guess , including Greg's but , yeah , keep doing what you're doing . You guys make an awesome , awesome podcast and everybody loves you and we will see you the next time we are down in Disney live from the Ben Franklin Bridge .

Speaker 27

Michael and Aaron , happy 100 Ryzen run , especially Greg , because I know the travails of being a producer , I know how hard it is . Hey , I shouldn't say that , aren't you Such an easy job , greg , great job . Congratulations , guys , on your 100 . We love you guys . We love listening to you .

Thank you , guys for all your love and support that you've given us since you began your podcast and we can't wait for the next Challenge , that we come and kick your butts . I'm on the pal of time . Now Look out .

Speaker 5

Greg , what did you do Our friends that will run for Think there's some kind of rivalry ? I've never , I have never thought of our friends that will run for anything other Than good friends , and in fact I often give them credit for being the last piece of the puzzle Before this podcast was created .

So I want to know what you did to our friend Tom to make him think there's a library .

Speaker 3

I I really honestly don't know . It's probably that one Peloton ride that we did together and I smoke the living crap out . No , but it's funny , though . Each time I listen to an episode that we'll run , for I play a little game to see how long it takes them to either mention rise and run or my name .

And it usually gets earlier and earlier and earlier in an episode that I'm just waiting for them to just straight up . Have me do their introduction and so I've done that . Well , I know you have yes in the most epic troll job ever .

Speaker 5

Oh golly . Thank you , kg . Michelle misty Wendy . Thank you so much , not only for appearing With us on the rise and run podcast , but for those lovely messages . We are Happy and proud to have you as friends .

Speaker 16

Hey to my friends at rise and run . This is Taryn Tarell . Congratulations on you guys's 100th episode . I look forward to the next 100 . See you guys on a course , soon .

Speaker 12

Thank you so much , taryn , for sending us that clip . That is so amazing . Thank you so much . But you once told us that you were good at dying , and so we actually have that clip here .

Speaker 4

This was the worst day of my life . I was like , oh my god , so I go and they tell me that I need to . I'm on a zoom call . He's looking at my face . He goes okay , I need that . You just look like you're in pain . First , you stub your tail . Second , you get punched in the stomach .

Third , somebody drops an anvil on your head and so I start going through that and he goes no , no , no , you're making it with your face . I don't want to see your face , I only want to see your eyes move . Show me those three reactions with just your eyes .

And I was like I got off with the phone with them and I called my husband and I was like , yes , so thanks for prepping with me on that . I definitely didn't book that , so that was kind of waste of time . But here we are , yeah , so I like stun so much more . Now I do enjoy stunt acting , which , like occasionally , I do , and that's really fun .

I have an upcoming gig where I get to die , which is like kind of what I do most of the time . It's so amazing Dying like what are you doing today ? I'm going to go die on set and it's going to be great . So and that's that's fun , because it will actually be me . Yeah . I don't know if I have any lines .

It's weird because as actors you know if you have lines going in as stunts , you don't necessarily know .

Speaker 5

Oh really .

Speaker 4

You'll show up the week before and they're like oh yeah , you have this line . Oh great , I could have prepared for that , but it's fine .

Speaker 3

I will say I know we've talked several times before about like guests . That would you know . That would make us nervous when we go to interview them and for some reason Taryn was one of them for me and I know she's going to hear this and she's probably going to like being stitches , like laughing .

But I remember this , the whole story about how we got her on the podcast and it was marathon weekend and Bob and I were , I think we were having dinner in like Hollywood studios and all of a sudden I saw that someone or some profile with a the elusive blue checkmark had liked one of our posts or whatever , and I think she was like our first ever like blue

checkmark account to follow us . And then I'm digging in and you know , just seeing her history of being a professional wrestler and you know and run Disney fanatic , and I was like , well , what do you think Should we try to like get her on the podcast ?

And it's so funny that you know her whole interview was about doing stunts and she agreed to do the interview when I was walking in front of the Indiana Jones Epic stunts , spectacular , perfect , and it just worked out really well . And now you know Jack , you know the two of you are best friends . You guys are doing a race together .

It's really cool how these things come together . So again , taryn , thank you so much for sending your message and we can't wait to see you soon . Our next message comes from a good friend who shares a very strong eye to eye connection with me .

Speaker 2

Hi Ryzen Run . This is Kristen or run on Instagram , but I just wanted to send you guys a huge congratulations for hitting a huge milestone 100 episodes . Thank you so much for all you do for everyone in the running community , for being so positive and uplifting and always keeping me company on my weekly run .

I wish you guys the very best , and to another 500 miles and 500 episodes , all right . Well , thank you so much for everything you do and I'm so proud of you guys .

Speaker 11

Well , thank you so so much to Kristen for that amazing clip . Now , one of our favorite clips that we have from episode 36 was when we had Devon and Kristen on to talk about this question .

Speaker 6

A lot of people think if I eat very little and I marathon train , that will help me lose weight , and so you touched upon very quickly about how people are underfed often when they come to you and they're eating very few calories when they come to you .

Can you talk about the benefits of eating more calories , not only as a runner but as an athlete in general , and how that can actually help you lose more weight in general , or how that can help you become a better athlete and your body is very , very smart .

Speaker 28

If you continuously give it 1300 calories , it's going to know its activity level to keep you alive and only burn . You know 1300 calories that you're giving it .

Speaker 6

So , yeah , you're really good at adapting , yes absolutely .

Speaker 28

Your body is a lot smarter than me . Give it credit for it . You know so a lot of times , I think what happens too is that people experience hunger in many odd , different ways . Like you're not going to the bathroom , you're clenching your jaw , things like that .

That might be signs that you might be underfueling yourself and so allowing people to have that freedom to eat a bagel or a banana , like the amount of times my family has been like you're eating a whole banana , an apple , like a mongri .

Speaker 5

That's funny .

Speaker 6

I'm always astounded by the idea that if you need to lose weight , you got to keep taking things away and taking calories away , and just the freedom it gives you to start when you eat more calories and you just can become a better athlete . It's very liberating , I think , is the right word .

So I loved that episode and I really do appreciate Devon and Kristen's knowledge on that one . Our next message is from some people who might be a little familiar to the Run Disney community . We got their race announcers coming in .

Speaker 21

Hey , what's amazing about Run Disney is the community and the people that not just run , but they put their heart and the soul into strengthening the community . So thank you to the seven friends who created the Rise and Run podcast . Congratulations on 100 episodes and I can't wait to see you . Three , two , one , go even further .

Speaker 14

Hello , this is Run Disney Race and John Pelkey , so here's the thing I wanted to call and give you all the love in the world on the occasion of your 100th episode . That's a fellow podcaster . See what I did there three , two , one go podcast . I know how difficult it is to get to 100 episodes and to keep the quality up .

I love what you guys do for us in the Run Disney community and the Disney community beyond . So , congratulations . Couldn't be happier for you Once again Run Disney Race . Host John Pelkey says congratulations , hey everybody .

Speaker 7

it's Riley Claremont . You're all-purpose buddy and Run Disney Race host and I just want to congratulate the entire team at the Rise and Run podcast on their 100th episode . Thank you guys so much for your entertainment , education and inspiration . You guys are the best . Congratulations .

Speaker 1

So thank you for those wonderful 100 episode messages , and here are some of our favorite moments from when we had the race announcers on our podcast .

Speaker 21

I'll tell the story quickly . But we just finished the start and our producer , jason Roberts , and who is still there today , said you got to go to the finish , go . And so I just . Okay , I don't bring any of my belongings . I get in a golf cart and they shoot me over to the Magic Kingdom Park lot .

There's a card table , a computer and a box and a microphone and they're like , just say the names that come up , okay , great . So the box was there because it was really sunny and you couldn't see unless you put your face on the box . I got you right .

But there's like there's no characters , there's no DJ , there's no food boxes , it's just me and a microphone saying your name , and then it's over and nobody comes to get me . And I don't have my phone and they left me in the Magic Kingdom Park and I'm calling this guy , carrie , from other people's phones and he's not answering .

Speaker 5

I doesn't know the number yet .

Speaker 21

Now , I never go anywhere without my like . No , I need my bag , I need my bag , I need my phone , I need my water , I need my snacks . I need my hot hands with good reasons . So , and John's over at the VIP buffet and I'm in the parking lot .

Speaker 23

We had to go out and tell everyone that we're going to ask you to get back on the buses .

Speaker 21

Not we . We nominated you .

Speaker 23

I think I volunteered because I'm the old permajune in the group and there is something completely powerful about disappointing an enormous group of people all the time and having them hate you for nothing to do with me . I have no power or anything , but I did .

They said we need you to go out there and tell them that they're going to have to get back on the buses and we're going to be holding the race for probably at least half an hour . And we weren't . We don't know . We have got a lot of weather in Central . Florida . So , yes , I was able to go out , and I was .

I got a lot of love because I went on stage and thought how am I going to let the people know ? So I got up there hey , everybody , good morning . So here's the thing . And from the . So here's the thing which got a huge laugh from the crew , which is really what I'm shooting for .

I was able to let them know and of course , I was booed and I said feel free to blame me , it's all my fault . Yeah , that was that thatame . It was all for everyone's safety .

Speaker 21

And it was what you have to do , but I just every time I wanted to deliver bad news or something , I just so . Here's the thing you can take that into your , your everyday life .

Speaker 5

So you know , we don't want to hear that if we're down at Disney World we don't want to hear that prior to a race I'm not going to .

Speaker 21

John comes up alone and there's no DJ or like anyone comes up alone and there's no DJ , it's not . It's not going to be good .

Speaker 5

Not good to be . Here's the thing , and it's it's John , it's not .

Speaker 21

they're not going to send me .

Speaker 5

They're not going to be me .

Speaker 21

Riley , possibly Riley .

Speaker 25

You know again , not to be all corny but when we say that it's an honor and a privilege to do what we do , we absolutely 100 percent mean it .

We are absolutely true believers in running even though some of us don't take part in it that much , but we're absolute believers , obviously , in run Disney and the product that it provides for all the caveats and qualifiers as far as registration and all the things .

Again , the fact that you guys and that the run Disney family jumps through the hoops , that they jump through and then only be met with this you know mile long walk to the start of my year .

Yeah , I mean , and then you know , and then to have the privilege of running twenty six point two , or thirteen point one , or the people that do dopey or goofy , I mean it's it's it's mind blowing , and to see all the different types , the diversity , the inclusiveness of the run Disney family .

It inspires us and again , it really is our honor and privilege to play even just a tiny part in your experience , because it's it's mind blowing what you guys do .

Speaker 5

Many thanks to the run Disney race announcers . What a great crew . We enjoyed having all three of them with us , though sadly not all at once . I'm not ruling that out for a future episode Moving right along . You know or you love her , she's one of our favorite guests . In fact , she was with us just last week . Brittany left us this message .

Speaker 13

Hey , it's Brittany Charvineau and wishing a happy one hundred episodes to the Rise and Run podcast , especially the very special , very unique , wonderfully unique , wonderfully human Allie congratulations .

Speaker 5

One of the favorite times we had Brittany on , and she's been on a couple of times , but this was her second time . We brought her on to surprise Jack . Remember , jack ? You'd finished Lake Sonoma . I did , yeah , you and she were together at some point in the race . You saw her . I know that .

Speaker 12

Yeah , I saw her , so she had . She was already way beyond halfway point because Lake Sonoma was there and back , and I remember seeing her , maybe it was like around my 19 or 20 . And I was just like , oh my gosh , there she goes . Oh , I'm not even halfway yet .

Speaker 5

Oh , a while to go . But what I remember most about this is when I contacted her and gave her the idea . She was just so excited . I said Jack , finish this race . You want to come in and surprise her ? She said and actually she had to work with us to get in at the right time , so that was awesome .

In this clip she talks about that race and specifically about the end of the race .

Speaker 13

It was later miles where I'm just struggling and I'm just like I'm just moving , I'm saying please , I'm saying thank you so much to everybody that moved away from me and cheered for me and all I could muster was like a really sad , like thumbs up or like a half mile or like a , because I tried to .

I really do feel like this is a community and I really do try to put those good vibes back out there . I think that's what I love about trail running so much . So I always feel bad when I'm just like in that last little bit where it's taking everything I can muster . So I'm putting that all that good juju back out there .

I'm very grateful for everybody that cheered as I passed .

Speaker 12

I totally agree with everything you were saying , brittany , because everybody on the trails are so extremely nice and they all have stories battle stories of other races that if they weren't hurting now they could tell you a moment when it was really bad for them that you could relate to and tell them how you can get out of it . Oh , she was amazing I .

Oh , that was such a beautiful surprise . Thank you guys so much for that . I know it was like a year or so ago now . Can you believe that time has flown , you guys ?

Speaker 5

Well , that's so 28 . Yeah , yeah , it was over a year , yeah .

Speaker 12

You guys . We made it into Ox's Fools album . How epic is that we now have a song specially made for us here you guys go .

Speaker 21

We're about to be , serenaded no-transcript .

Speaker 3

I love that , my smile .

Speaker 11

This is permanent , I might have started tearing up Doesn't get any better than that . No , it doesn't . That's awesome .

Speaker 5

And he hits on so many like random , obscure things too , yeah .

Speaker 3

Like you know , our extended conversations about school bread in Norway or the fact that Bob loves going to Morimoto . Yeah , yeah , I mean really the only thing he missed was a pickle milkshake , but obviously that was so soon ago that he wouldn't have time to been able to incorporate that into the lyrics that was .

Speaker 5

Jar , you're the best man . That was awesome , yes you are .

Speaker 3

And in the continuation , to celebrate Jar when we had him on , here's a clip of him talking about some of his favorite dopey moments .

Speaker 6

Since you've done four dopeys and you're working on your fifth . What is your favorite memory from any of them ?

Speaker 26

I think my favorite memory of any dopey is the finish line .

Speaker 22

Oh yeah .

Speaker 26

So I did 2019 , 2020 , which is the shortened one , but , like your first marathon , that's always . It's always special . Yeah , I trained the hardest for that one . Within like a mile 15 , my feet , ankles were hurting really bad , but then I finally recovered .

That was when we ran through wide world of sports and then I was well enough to get a turkey leg and Epcot and finish with that . 2020 was the hot one ? Yeah , it was , which was shortened , but I kept my watch running until I was on the bus and then the bus took off and my watch was at 26.2 .

Speaker 5

And I was like boom did it . That's quite . The closing speed was tremendous , man .

Speaker 26

Yeah . So then this past one I was able to finish with my wife , and she finished her first marathon , so that was good too .

Speaker 6

That's awesome . Some of my favorite episodes are the playful guests like Jar , Oxen , Spoon , but my other favorite would be people who are having inspiring stories . Our next message comes from one of my favorite guests , Leah .

Speaker 22

Hey guys , this is Leah , and I'm here to congratulate the Rise and Run podcast gang for this last 100 amazingly motivational episodes that have gotten so many of us back up and running . Thank you all for paving the road ahead of us with such incredibly powerful stories , unbelievable overcoming feats , a great deal of self-love lessons , outstanding support and laughter .

This community has given me so much . I am so absolutely grateful . Cheers to many more 3am wake up calls and at least 100 more episodes in the making . May you never stop inspiring us all .

Speaker 5

And speaking of inspiring messages .

Speaker 6

What would you say to somebody who is dealing with something and just saying like I can't , I just can't do this , I can't do a marathon . How ?

Speaker 22

would you tackle that ? I'll say be kind to yourself . We often go into this mindset of we cannot do this and we will never be able to do this , and it is because we are so absorbed in our pain and in our suffering and at that time I can tell you right now it is true . What you're thinking is true .

It's because you're making it real , it's cultivating a different mindset . That is the hard portion of what you're going through , and this is like one of the sentences that I like the most . It says your current situation is not your final destination . It really isn't . You are able to do incredible things .

Your body was built for amazing , impossible things and you will get there . Just be kind to yourself and have patience and on the times that you cannot find that for yourself , have somebody at your side that can find it for you . Having that support is absolutely necessary .

Like Danny is the rock upon which I stand , and I would have not accomplished half of the things I accomplished this January without his love and support and without him there to constantly remind me that I was able to do things .

Speaker 5

Your current situation is not your final destination . Those might be the most powerful words we've heard in these first 100 episodes . I know I remember them . Thank you , lea , thank you everyone who's participated in this podcast through the first 99 episodes , and thanks especially to those of you who left us messages this evening . We're very , very grateful to you .

Friends , let's take a look at what's coming up . We've got episode 101 next week . Carissa Galloway is with us to talk about her new book Run Eat Walk . Episode 102 . Race announcer Fitzcaller joins the Rise and Run podcast . So we look forward to that . Alright , friends , it's time for Peer Peer , peer , peer , peer . Nooooo , a little behind the scenes .

This is what I put up with every week . When we say it's time for the race report , we get all those sound effects . I thought you'd like to hear them . Thank you , I appreciate that . Let's take a look . Hey , I'm going back a week . I know I said I wouldn't , but there's a couple of important ones here .

The Georgetown to Idaho Springs half marathon was a couple weeks ago . Point-to-point race started in Georgetown , colorado , I'm not sure where it finished . Georgetown to Idaho Springs oh , wait a minute . Yeah , I am Idaho Springs . Our buddy Ryan ran a Ryan in search of the elusive two-hour-half marathon Said he thought he might be too old for this .

Ryan's in his 40s . Ryan no buddy , your best race days are still ahead of you anyway . Perfect storm of racing , great course , great weather Nailed his two-hour half with 12 seconds to spare . That's gonna put him in a really good corral when we see him at Winondine and marathon weekend . Ryan , that two-hour marathon half marathon was your PR . Also .

One more Torrington road race five-miler in Connecticut . Sue and Rachel did that . Sue and Rachel are both run 169ers . I think that's really cool . That's the 169 towns in Connecticut . Had to mention that Sue is on . That was 136 for Sue and town number 70 for Rachel .

This week's race report actually starts on Wednesday in Rochester , new York , the Hot Summer Night 5K run 585 series . Brian and Karen ran that one . On Friday , chris ran the Rock and Roll Salt Lake City 5K . We're going to hear more from Chris in just a few moments . In Randolph , vermont , the last mile 5K . Heather rolled through this .

One started off really strong , headed into PR territory but a long steep hill and the long steep hills have to be tough on a push rim athlete Nocturor off her pace back down to earth . Heather's still happy to be out there rolling for a great cause . The cause a bit somber . The cause in this one was hospice care , but she did support this wonderful cause .

Post race French bread , pizza , music and snacks were outstanding . And Heather said that her friends , a six year old , declan , pr'd the 5K in 31 minutes and 22 seconds . Let's let's . A six year old ran the 5K in 31 minutes . Wow , wow , pretty fast . Let's move on to Saturday now .

On Friday I mentioned that our friend Chris was at the Rock and Roll Salt Lake City 5K . Saturday was the half marathon and with us this evening in the race report spotlight is our friend Chris . Hi , chris , welcome .

Speaker 17

Hello Bob and Greg . It's so great to be here .

Speaker 5

Now , Chris , we I already mentioned you did the 5K . Friday . We're going to talk about the half marathon in Salt Lake City , but I also wanted to talk and we mentioned this last week on the podcast . You had a big event the week before , so I'd kind of like to start with that one . Let's go back a week and talk about what you did a week ago .

Speaker 17

Sure , absolutely . And let me even take it a little , a little bit further , because it's all really percolated . About a year ago , almost a year ago , I learned about this race that they did in the Metro East side of St Louis called the Watershed Endurance Run , and they had a three hour or a six hour run .

Yeah Well , when I heard about that , I was already . I already had some conflicts last year , so I put it in my calendar the day that registration opened to make sure that I signed up , because I love challenges . Sure , a six hour run . It sounded like a challenge to me .

Speaker 5

It sounds like a challenge to me . How ?

Speaker 17

did it go ? Well it was . It was exhilarating from the standpoint of the challenge that it that it provided to myself and to my crew , in part because we started at six PM at night and at six PM at night it was a brisk , 88 degrees .

Speaker 5

Yeah , and probably muggy too . Yeah , and muggy , that's right . Yeah .

Speaker 17

But the course was just beautiful . It's a 1.01 mile loop around a nature preserve called the Watershed and it's a beautiful area . Half of the course is on crushed rock , the other half is on a paved trail , and then one little segment about three , two to three tenths of a mile is running along a four foot wide , no side bar floating bridge .

Speaker 5

Yes , yes , I remember this vividly now . I remember the photos .

Speaker 17

Yeah , and at first it was , it was bright out , so it was great . You can make your turns and you had people , you were , you were , you were going to pass them . I had the fortunate ability to run every one of those segments because I'm a long runner . Right . So you had , you had to line of sight to pass people .

Well then the sun went down and you had to be hyper focused with your headlamp where the turns were , because one little step off and , as the race director said , you don't want to fall in , because you're going to be in three feet of water and three feet of mud and your night's going to suck . Oh geez .

Speaker 5

Were you tossing elbows , Chris ?

Speaker 17

Oh , I tried . I tried not to . I'm sure you did .

Speaker 5

I'm messing with you . That's cool , yeah , but yeah , I remember those pictures that looked treacherous .

Speaker 17

Yeah , but , but it was fun . It was just . I love challenges like that .

Disney helped me learn about challenges with with Dopey several years ago , so I always try to find either events that I create myself that create a challenge , or an actual race , and this one provided that , and it also provided a little bit of of inspiration self inspiration to myself because , as we're winding down to the final hour , I was at my little mini

base camp with my wife and son that were there to support me and provide me all everything that I needed , and I had to look at the clock and said , okay , you have to finish a loop in order for it to count , and you had to finish by midnight . So we were about 39 minutes in and I'm like I could do three loops . So I'm like I could get this done .

Well , the problem was I didn't have 13 minute legs that time . At night I had like 14 and a half .

Speaker 5

Yeah , well , that's pretty darn good , anyway , yeah .

Speaker 17

I mean so . I mean I was . I was happy with that , but I finished lap number 26 and the clock said 1149 . So I had 11 minutes to go on 14 minute legs . But the thing was I signed up for a six hour race , not a five hour and 49 minute race .

So I made the decision that I'm going to run until the clock runs out and , as my legs were going , I'm like if I only go out for six minutes or five minutes and then run back to get back to the start line , so be it . But I just started going and pushing a little bit .

I passed one person and then another person that was walking in the last segments there , and it's just I had to give it everything I had and , going across that bridge and really trying to stay focused , I had three minutes to spare to get to the finish line and I just had to book it .

So it was myself and this other lady were running , knowing that we are . We are up against the clock .

Speaker 5

Getting close yeah .

Speaker 17

Yeah , fortunately both of us crossed , with just a minute to spare . It was so cool to know that you can push yourself that much harder , even after five and a half plus hours , so I just love that challenge of putting my body to the test .

Speaker 5

Great story . How many miles would you end up doing total in the six ?

Speaker 17

hour race . My watch said I did about 28 miles because of my base camp was a was a like half of a of a 10th away from the start line , so about 28 miles . One of the really cool things was I was in third place in my age group all the way through and they only gave awards for the first two places .

Well , the guy that was in front of me I don't know what happened with him he didn't go in the mud , did he ? He did not fall in the mud , okay , but with 23 minutes to go , he decided to stop . Oh , oh , gee , whiz . So I passed him only because of that last lap . Yeah .

Speaker 5

Yeah , chris , congratulations , man , that's awesome . Thank you , I think that's so age group you end up . Age group first , number two . Number two Age group second yeah , fantastic , that's great Chris .

Speaker 17

And they gave out these really cool awards , these , these bugs with Bobby , yeah , yeah .

Speaker 5

Yeah , so unique . I remember seeing the picture on Facebook again Really cool . Oh , it's fantastic and I'm glad you shared that with us . Let's talk about this and , of course , to relax and , kind of you know , follow up and take it easy . You did a challenge in rock and roll 5k and half marathon in Salt Lake City , nice , and flat and easy . Yep , yeah .

So hey , real quick . How'd the 5k go ?

Speaker 17

5k was fun . It was the very first event for rock and roll in Salt Lake City , so they had some big hoopla with that . My wife and daughter did it . My daughter wasn't too pleased about doing it in the heat and humidity but fortunately the course was flat , well supported and we had great food afterwards .

Speaker 5

That's the first thing I can say about the 5k that's good , that's good , but let's I mean let's talk about the half . Yes , on Saturday now you knocked out the half that was . That was pretty hilly , wasn't it ? Just a little bit .

Speaker 17

Yeah yeah , they said it was only 700 feet of total incline over the course of the race . My Garmin said it was only 700 feet of incline over the entire race . I still call baloney on that , because it sure felt like 3000 feet .

Speaker 5

Yeah , I bet it did , hey look . But to be honest , I've done 6 and 700 races . That's not insignificant , oh no , that's . That's a fair amount of climate . It's not hard rock , but it's a fair amount of climate . It really is , yeah .

Speaker 17

I looked at today in the first mile we started downtown Salt Lake , so just a beautiful Shireen picturesque area . But within a quarter mile we're going straight up a hill and in that first mile we went up just over 300 feet right to the base of the state capital . Yeah , neat .

That's neat , and then you think you would start going down from there , but you don't Nice Make a turn and you go up again . Oh , I hate that .

Speaker 5

I hate that . When you get to the top and you turn , you go oh nuts , yeah , up some more .

Speaker 17

Yeah , what the beauty . I mean just that majesty of the mountains there the .

Speaker 5

Wauzatsch mountains , the . Wauzatsch mountains there in Salt Lake City . I'm trying to remember . Yeah , it's still pretty . Yeah , awesome , good race support , I hope .

Speaker 17

Yeah , very good race support , rock and roll . I don't know if you've done some of their events over the years , but I mean I've always loved their events and we've done them in several different parts of the country , so they have great support .

They usually have music every mile or two , so there was some local bands that were performing water , gatorade , all the good stuff all along the way , but there were no escalators or people movers , unfortunately for the hills .

Speaker 5

That would be interesting .

Speaker 17

Yeah , just think of how fast you could go , yeah .

Speaker 5

A good metal series . I suppose Rock and roll does well there .

Speaker 17

They do . It was a challenge with . I mean , if there's a challenge , I'm going to do it . It just seemed how I've turned into .

Speaker 5

Yeah , we've learned that .

Speaker 17

Yeah , so they had the 5K metal for Friday . That was a smaller one , the half marathon was a nice one , and then a great little spinner metal that looked like a record player . Yes To complete the series .

Speaker 5

I've seen them do that . I surely have .

Speaker 15

Do they get those out the day of the race to have remix metal ? Yes , they do .

Speaker 17

Yep , yeah . And then , like with the old rock and roll days , if you did two , three or four or five different cities , then you got these little remix metals and I have several of those . I had to go look at my wall to see the different ones that I've had .

It's a little bit of a shame that rock and roll is down to only eight events in North America now , because they've been so fun everywhere I've done them .

Speaker 5

Yeah , covid kind of put a chink in their armor , I think , and that ended up . I know they canceled a bunch or postponed them or moved them and yeah , now they're coming back . Maybe , who knows , maybe maybe they'll crawl out the other side and we'll get back to more . I hope so .

Speaker 17

Because they put on such great events well , really , really well supported . They always have a charity arm , which is great , and they had that there in Salt Lake City as well .

One of the interesting things and I don't know if there's a hallucination or not , but we're up in this canyon about mile five or so and we're passing a cemetery on the right hand- side , oh yeah . And this is after we've gone up about 450 , 500 feet of elevation , and these two deer are running through the cemetery .

And I joked to one of the guys that was running next to me . I'm like are the deer trying to call us into the cemetery to lay down for a bit ?

Speaker 5

Yeah , I saw . You had a photo at one point . It looked like you were elevated and you took a photo down to the trail below you . Yes , you could see the runners there .

Speaker 17

Yeah , that's part of this canyon , which was great when you were on the back half of that because you could see all the other runners still to come . It was a little daunting when you were on the front half of that and you saw all the runners who have already finished where you were . Yeah . I get it , I get it .

I think that was really interesting and I was fortunate to also run the Salt Lake City half marathon back in April , which is almost the same course , just in reverse , and that one was great because it was more downhill . This one had all the hills were on the front half with rock and roll . Chris , what's coming up ?

Oh gosh , I seem to have a lot of things on the mix . Like I said , I'm a big challenge guy so I sometimes will create my own challenges , like I did last year . I turned 50 last year so I'm like , well , if I'm a turn 50 , what could I do that would symbolize it ?

So last year I decided to run 50 half marathons over the course of the year , so basically one a week , One a week yeah .

One a week , and then , when it came time for I still had two weeks left , so I gave myself one week off after running a 24 hour self created run to raise money for charities that I am passionate about , and Christmas came around , I ran number 51 as well . So still working on what the next challenge will be , but I have a race , at least one a month .

I've been running since 2012 and I've done at least one race every month since I've started , so I obviously want to keep that streak going .

Speaker 5

That's pretty cool . Any Disney events coming up ?

Speaker 17

Absolutely . We are doing a Disney cruise in October , so I'll knock out castaway key number two . Then signed up for the Disneyland half in January and then , fortunately , this morning was lucky enough to get the springtime surprise 10 miler , so my wife can get her second coast to coast and I'll get my third coast to coast . Oh , outstanding . Great .

Speaker 5

Yeah , it is . That's outstanding . We'll see you there , chris . Absolutely . All right , my friend , I'm going to let you go . Thank you so much for giving us your time . A couple great stories about some great race weekends , congratulations . Thank you so much , bob . All right , continuing . On Saturday in London Dairy , New Hampshire , the boot scootin' boogie 5K .

Kate ran this one on her birthday , very close to me .

Speaker 6

Yeah , cool , I'm going to tell you stories like the next town or Kate . Why didn't you tell me about it ?

Speaker 5

Well , well , now you'll know for next year it's Kate's birthday again . Oh , happy birthday . Yeah , I saw some photos . Really neat . She got with a bunch of her local run Disney friends and they all costumed up , looked really cool , made for a memorable night . Of course , anytime you're running a race on your birthday , that's going to be a memorable event .

Good job , kate . In New York City , the TCS , new York City Marathon Training Series 12-Miler . Megan was there In Roswell , georgia , not New Mexico , georgia , but this is the Area 13.1 run . Amy ran this one . Said she loved the course . Dylan was there Her first half since Princess 22 nailed her goal pace . That's really cool . She did quite well Like the run .

Said it was well run , mostly flat , and she got so fired up , so excited by our result here , that she upgraded from Marathon to Goofy for Marathon Weekend . We're going to need two bells , please , katja . Katja wasn't sure what kind of pace she'd run . It was her first half Marathon . She was thinking 220 , 230 . She runs sub two . See how easy it is .

First one she walked , and that's kind of a mental thing and I get it . It takes a little bit . You're out there on a run , but you know what you deserve to be out there . We're proud of you .

That's great . She walked a 15 minute mile pace . That's outstanding . Her daughter Emily finished fourth in the age group . That's a tough place to finish because most runs recognize three . That's still outstanding though . Great job , emily . This medal is huge .

I mean Allie posted a picture of this medal next to most recent Princess Medal and you can hide the Princess Medal behind it . This medal's that big Really recommends this event . The Mermaid 5K in Maryland . Finally , in Seattle Washington , the Alki Beach Sunset 5K . Kimberly and Josh said the race was beautiful watching the sunset on the water .

Sounds like some of the other races around here . Lauren got a chance to meet Martinez at the Expo , got a great photo there , says it's a great race .

She'll do it again , but she's gonna do it on an anniversary year because that's the only time they give out medals .

And our friend Amy also ran this race with her 14 year old daughter . They had a great time and it was her daughter's first time doing the race . So PR BEEP BEEP and Amy said she'll definitely be back to do this race again , but in the meantime she's excited to do her next goal , which is to do five half marathons in the next five months .

So , amy , I'm very proud of you for doing this race and I can't wait to see your next achievements . Cool cool .

Great weather , really a great pace for a first time marathoner . She posted two , really . I like them . I call them the before and after photos .

She's got one photo of herself early in the run , all smiles and running , and then she's got one that's probably around mile 24 , 25 . She's still hanging in there . Nah , quite as many smiles . Great event though . Adrienne now , after this successful marathon , is really pumped for dopey .

You know I've been trying all week to put 100 episodes of the Rise and Run podcast into perspective . A lot of podcasts don't reach 100 episodes , but a bunch do , so it's not that it's that big a deal . And why all the fuss then ?

Well , mostly , mostly it's because of you , our friends who listen and share this podcast , and all the great people we heard from tonight . I don't know exactly what we expected when we started all of this , but because of the way you've embraced the podcast and created this amazing family . We've gone well beyond anything we could have imagined .

I'm always challenged to put into words how much you mean to all of us , but it's simple Without you , there is no Rise and Run .

The single most incredible thing about this podcast is all the amazing friends we've made , whether we've visited in person , talked on a Zoom , exchanged messages in social media , or whether you've been a podcast guest , or even if you're just out there listening and have never gotten in touch with us .

We love you all and we mean that , and I always go back to Jeff Galloway's words you can't fake that and we're not . So what's next ? Well , again , in large part , that's up to you .

We are kicking around some new ideas to grow , strengthen the family , but the bottom line is this we're not going to be doing that , we're going to be doing it for you , but the bottom line is this as long as you're listening , we'll be here to talk with you . So let's get started on the next 100 . Thanks , friends , and happy running .
