Welcome to the Mastering Midlife Podcast where we talk about all the crazy fun things that happen when you are a midlife mama. I'm your host Heather London, let's dig in. Hey everybody and welcome to Episode 38. Today we're talking about Ageless beauty from the inside out. Those of you that don't know me, my name is Heather London. I am a life
coach. I help women master midlife and I'm also a holistic nutritionist and energy healer and I use all of these modalities to help my clients as I go into midlife with my teenage sons that are breaking up with me and I'm trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
And today I have an amazing guest that I wanted to introduce you to because she has so much knowledge about the Ageless beauty from the inside out and I will introduce Drupdi Glouin Kowski but I will let Drupdi introduce herself because she's got so much background and so much knowledge behind her. So Drupdi if you could introduce yourself that would be fantastic. Thanks so much Heather. So right, my name is Drupdi Glouin Kowski and I'm a mom of two
teenage boys. I'm also getting into that next stage of life. So this is something that's very passionate. I help women feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin as we go through the next stages of life and I do that with simple tutorials and just messaging to help women just sort of feel like they're heard and seen and know that there is support out there in many different ways to look and feel your best. That's so good. And you know
what I love about what you do is you do have like such simple tutorials. Now in all honesty I'm not like a makeup person in any way, shape or form. I don't know anything about it and I don't really use it but I love your tips because they are so simple. It's just something really basic but it makes a big difference when you are loving what you're doing. Does that make sense? Like yeah, yeah. Like it doesn't have to be a huge thing.
A thing for me is like time consuming and I want to be efficient with my time and so I'm like yeah, something simple and easy and I think that as women who are always doing everything for everyone simple and easy is really attractive to us. Wouldn't you agree? Oh, I totally agree. I mean, you know at this stage in life I think a lot of women just experience that they just don't know what to do. Their skin's changing, their bodies are
changing. I'm experiencing all of those so I can speak from the heart of how that you know looks and feels. So I understand something fast, easy but very uplifting. You know, we still want to feel beautiful, sexy, strong. All of those things don't go away just because we've hit that stage, menopause or postmenopause. We still want to feel beautiful on the inside
and out. That's true. And if you can take one little tip and applying it to help yourself feel good, then it's so worth it because when we talk about ageless beauty, we're really talking about not how you look on the outside, but you're talking about, we're talking about how you feel about yourself. And to us, that is how you would translate beauty. Like if you are really feeling yourself and loving yourself, you're like, oh, girl, I kind of
going on. That is beautiful, not only to yourself, but to others as well, like the energy that you give off from that confidence in yourself. Oh, completely. I mean, if you wake up and you wake up and you're not feeling like you've got swollen feet or your eyes are looking puffy, the dark circles. When you have one of
those days where you wake up, you're like, oh, everything feels great. All of a sudden that mood and there's a shift in your energy too, how you look and feel is all of a sudden just changed in that instant of waking up and realizing that something is looking, feeling really good today, right? So we want to kind of extend that. We want to look and feel good every day. And it is a mind shift. It's sort of getting used to new ways of doing things and appreciating what you do have, right?
Yeah, this just came to me. I'm curious. What do you think is the number one thing that a woman going into midlife notices about her skin that's changing the most dramatic or quickest that is something easy you could do to help with that? Like, what's the biggest change? Like, for example, when we talk about like how our bodies change, we all of a sudden store fat in our stomach at our belly area, every, it happens to everybody overnight.
You wake up and you're like, what happened? Right? And you're not alone because every single woman this happens to. So I'm curious, is there something similar that and it might not be the skin? Like, if I had to guess, I would say it might be actually hair, but I'm not sure. I'm going to defer to you and tell me what do you hear or see the most, the biggest thing that women know?
I definitely think the hair is a big one. And it's a frightening thing to all of a sudden go, oh my goodness, you know, I'm thinning and as women, that's really something that affects us deeply, right? So yeah, thinning of the hair and just skin not feeling healthy or firm, you know, you experience more dryness or as some women say they're experiencing the downward motion of their skin and that's not something that they're, you know, happy
with, but it is fascinating because it does seem like it's instant. You know, I'm sure it's years in the making, but it seems like there is a point where all of a sudden overnight you realize things are not the same. And then you start being a little bit more critical of yourself, which in my experience is sort of the worst thing to do because then that leads to anxiety and stress and we've got the, you know, spiral happening there.
That's a vicious cycle because one of the causes of thinning hair is stress, right? As soon as our cortisol levels go up and then you're right, that's a vicious vicious cycle. And also to your point of it seems like it happens overnight, but it doesn't, here's an example that I want to give where I live. We have this, our cement patios out back. It's a strata. And there was a tree beside, that was planted beside this cement
patio. And the tree was small and the patio was fine. And then 20 years later, the tree got huge. And over those 20 years, the roots slowly grew under the patio. And then all of a sudden, it not only did it crack the patio, but it lifted up the side of the house. And it didn't happen. It seemed like overnight because it wasn't there. Then it was there, but it took 20 years of slowly, slowly, slowly making changes over time. And that is exactly
what's happening with us. And then all of a sudden, we've got, we've got a cracked patio, right? So it's being, and it didn't happen overnight. But it is everything to do with hormones. And so balancing hormones is critical, not only for your skin and your hair, but your mood and your body, your weight, everything comes down to balancing hormones. And of course, one of the best ways to do that is through food and holding space for
yourself, for your hormones to balance out. Because like in nature, everything is trying to just balance itself. If you just left nature to do what it naturally does, it would solve all of its problems because it figures out a balance. And it's the same here. We're not, nothing has gone wrong. We're supposed to have this transition and change in hormones. It's just how we support our body while it balances itself out. That's critical.
Right. I mean, you know, things that we do need to shift to, right? Our eating habits may need to change what we eat, how much of a certain thing we eat affects, you know, everything from our skin, hair, nails, everything moods, just like you said. So it is sort of learning new things and being open to learning too. And also just being a voice for yourself. I know for myself to sort of fight to figure out that, you know, in the end, I actually do
have a thyroid issue that I didn't really ever realize. And it's probably something that's been with me for quite some time. So, you know, when you're noticing changes, ask for help. Go, you know, to your doctor, seek help outside, like for, you know, including yourself, like finding someone that knows about all these shifts and works with women to help them
adjust to that next level. So definitely. And then, you know, the topical part is something that is important because now that you've spent all that time and energy rebalancing yourself, you, you know, you don't want to leave your skin out to dry in a sense, right? Because it represents such a huge part of our body that we want to make sure that we're maintaining and taking care of that too. Yes. Yeah. That's really important when you're talking about speaking
up because as women, we don't like to make waves, so to speak, right? Like, and we also want to think like we can solve any problem, fix anything. And so a lot of us won't speak up. And that's why I do this podcast is because I want all of us women to talk about what's going on because I guarantee you, drooped eated of the view, tell me what's going on with you. I'll say like, yes, me too. And then when I tell somebody else, they're like, yeah, I experienced that too. And
for some, it's more extreme and like, there's different variations of it. But I promise you that every single woman in our age group is going through this at some level. And the more we talk about it, the easier it is because think about your experience that you shared with us. How did you feel when at first, so the people weren't listening to you when you were saying, hey, this is how I'm feeling. This is what's going on. And so you, yeah, you so you weren't listened to. And
that makes you feel a certain way. Like, oh, maybe it is me. Maybe there's something wrong with me. And that's not the answer for sure, right? Because if you're thinking there's something wrong with you, you're going to ask for help even less. And you're going to talk about it even less. And so you did the right thing in talking to more people, asking other people, getting a second and a third opinion until there was an answer, right? And how did that feel when? Oh, my goodness. It was,
it gave me validation for everything, right? It was like, okay, I'm not going crazy here. There is something happening. There is that shift and experiencing that gaining of the weight and thinking of the hair and just all of those things. I wasn't going crazy and I wasn't ready to accept that, oh, it's just aging. You're aging. And to me, it's like, no, you can age.
You can age gracefully and you can do it feeling good about yourself too, right? So, so it's, yeah, it's even more important to me now to sort of help women, help them feel good. I can, you know, whether it's referring them to someone else because they have more knowledge or experience or if it's something that I can help them with too. It's, it takes us all together to really lift each other up. Yeah, I agree with you 100% and just that, that quote, I'm not crazy.
I guarantee you that every single woman has said that, okay, I'm not crazy. It's not just me. There is something actually going on and I, I say this all the time. It's like when we went through puberty, we had the hormones, our body changed. When we were pregnant, hormones, body changed, postpartum, the same thing. And now this is part of life. Like this is supposed to happen is just how we go through it is what's going to make it easier hard. So how do we balance
out ourselves? You're going to be different than I am. Your balancing is going to be different than mine. It is not a one size fits all. That's why I'm really leery about here. Take this one medication or take this one hormone because we're also different. So different. So what would be a couple of tips that you could share with our listeners that they could use to help them do something super simple with dealing with any of the issues with midlife skin, hair,
ageing. What would it be you got to share with us? I think in that, looking at those areas, the number one thing for me was reducing stress. So I think sharing that, it can be as simple as going out for a walk. Nature has so much healing power and it can so uplift your mood immediately. So even if it's something simple that you can get outside, take a walk 10, 15 minutes, it doesn't
have to be a long walk or even meditation. I'm experiencing so much more calmness since I started doing meditation and it's not something that I learned straight away or was great at straight away. It's still a learning curve because you have to calm your mind down and that in itself
for a lot of women is hard because we want to do everything all at once, right? So yeah, take some time out, take some time out to meditate, whether it's through apps or you're going in to take a class and then just staying hydrated, making sure that you're hydrating your body so that you're hydrating your skin and helping the blood process through properly too, right? If your circulation is improving, the amount of nutrients your body can then take out from that blood circulation
is better too, right? And eating habits, you know, look at what you're eating. Those things can be simple, they can be controllable. Look at your pantry, you know. Everyone's going to have something that's their thing to go to but don't have your whole pantry be a junk pile basically. So yeah, yeah, those are simple things and just like I said, take in time out for yourself as a biggest thing, whether you give yourself an at home like a little spa ritual for yourself or
you're meditating, any of those things. Oh, that's so good. The hydration is key and I'm drinking them white tea as we speak now white tea is even healthier than green tea because it's got less caffeine but it's high in antioxidants, which is really great for your skin, right? White tea and something like that, you can drink all day every day if you want. And then I agree with you a thousand percent of the stress. If you can de-stress and stress is created, not from our exterior environment,
stress is created in our brain. So it means that we're in charge of it. So if we find a situation stressful, then we're thinking it's stressful. So we can think it's something else instead to reduce that stress because nothing thins your hair or keeps weight on you more than stress. Yes. And I want to add in no flour, sugar or oil. Those things are really, really harsh on your system. So if you can eliminate flour, sugar and oil, it's going to be not only good for your
energy levels, but for your skin and your hair and all of those things as well. Another, I have two more tips. One is eating your fruits in vegetables. So a 50, 50 plate, 50 percent fruits in vegetables and the other 50 percent starches, potatoes, rice, pasta, because that's what keeps you full. So you can't overeat that and you're getting all of your nutrients. And again, your skin, your hair, your nails, that's where it gets its food from is from our food that builds
ourselves and then our cells build our hair and our skin and our nails. And then finally, it has to be sustainable. So whatever you do to balance yourself out, and it takes time, trust me. Like it took me probably a year to balance my hormones out, but it, but I did. And it was all with food and everything food, all natural, no supplement, no medications. But whatever you do to balance yourself out, you have to keep doing it to stay balanced. So it has to be sustainable.
That's why I am always totally a big advocate for whole foods because you can eat, you will be eating whole foods for the rest of your life. It's so easy to do. But anything that you start and can't keep up, then your results won't keep up. So they go up and down, up and down, which is helping you in the long run either. Yeah. Yes. So like I love those tips. Those are fantastic. And what do you think is the number one food that you would consume for really good skin? What do
you think is the number one skin food? Wow. There are so many, but I mean, I think anything that gives you that hydration is good. Anything that's like when you have probiotics in your in something that you're eating, again, that's good because that's your gut health too. That also translates to like skin health, right? Yes. So yeah. Yeah. I love that you have the knowledge of the gut biome because when we think about skin, we just think literally surface level.
But our skin is for created from ourselves and everything that we eat will build ourselves. So the gut biome is also responsible for 70% of our immune system, which heals our body. And think about skin, how amazing it is when you cut this always blows my mind when you cut your skin. And it heals itself and it totally disappears and that cut is never there. Like that is how powerful our body is. Like think about the skin always reproducing itself. Like our whole body
will reproduce itself, you know, every seven years. It's a totally completely. So when you think about that, really it's so powerful to eat healing foods. Every food you eat can heal your body. Every time you're having a meal, it's an opportunity to heal and nourish your body. That's the way I see it. And that's right. It gets me so excited about food. Like I'm such a nerd when it comes to this because there's so much possibility every time you're eating, every time you eat,
you either make yourself sick or you heal yourself either or that's what. So when you're looking at the food that you're eating, you'll see your answer as to the results you're getting. Oh, here's why I'm healthy. Here's why I'm sick. Right? So yeah. Girlfriend, this has been such a good chat. I love picking a brain. I love watching your videos.
