In this episode, we hear Richard Pharro, CEO of APMG International, talk to Liz Herman, the Senior Manager at Knowledge Content Training for the Accenture Federal Services in Washington DC.
A skilled technical Communicator who puts people at the heart of what she does, Liz recently won the ‘Winner of the Service to the Citizen award’, for her work in transforming complex knowledge (such as federal policies in healthcare and finance) into accessible content, providing services that impact the publics' lives for good.
A writing enthusiast and champion of the industry, Liz lets us in on the appeal of working in Technical Communication, and how she both derives, and adds value, through her work. We see her outline the role of a technical communicator, from the diversity of the role, what she loves in the community to the work/life balance of the job.
‘The guardian of transactions’ we delve into how Liz sees the relationship between AI intensifying and the role of Technical Communicators. In her words, there’s no reason to be scared of her job being taken over as there’s “always a technical communicator behind the curtain” feeding content into AI.
We’ll ask Liz where young technical communicators should start in terms of their career and what they should aim for…as unfortunately, the job of a Chief Writing Officer doesn’t exist yet.
We finish up by asking Liz to divulge her tips for improving writing for clarity and to finally explain what the actual definition of Knowledge management is. A must-listen for anyone already in, or wanting to discover the role of technical communication or Knowledge Management.
