Alex is Sarah’s friend. They have been friends for over six years. They have known each other since college. He is from Chicago, Illinois. He has always lived in Illinois and he has never traveled to other countries. Also, he only speaks English. He has recently heard about Sarah and Michael’s plan for learning Spanish.
He calls Sarah. She picks up, ‘Hello!’ Alex says, ‘Hey Sarah, it’s Alex!’ Sarah responds, ‘Alex, how have you been? It’s been a while since we last spoke!’ They haven’t spoken for almost a year. After catching up with Sarah, he asks her why she wants to learn Spanish. Sarah says, ‘Well, we have made plans to go to Mexico this year to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and we don’t speak Spanish very well. We have hired a tutor to teach us Spanish.’ Sarah has never been to Mexico. In fact, she has never been to Central America. However, she has traveled to Chile, Peru, and Argentina before. Sarah has not tried hard to learn Spanish before. This time, she’s really serious about it. She has always wanted to be fluent in Spanish and she thinks Spanish is an important language to learn. In addition, she has found a great teacher. His name is Jeff. Jeff has taught Spanish for two years. He has taught over 200 students so far. These students have learned Spanish fluently because of Jeff. Now Sarah and Michael want to learn Spanish. They have never taken Spanish classes before. So they are ready! They are thrilled and excited.
After one week, Alex calls Sarah again, ‘Hey Sarah! Actually, I have decided to learn Spanish with you guys! I have also decided to go to Mexico with you and Michael!’ Sarah says, ‘That’s cool, Alex! You can definitely join us for the Spanish classes, but you cannot come with us to Mexico!’ Alex says, ‘But, I want to…’ Sarah hangs up the phone! Alex gets upset. He sends a text to Sarah, ‘Just letting you know that I’ve heard Cinco de Mayo is more of an American holiday than a Mexican one. Mexicans don’t celebrate it much.’
