A court in Rome ruled that seven asylum-seekers brought to Albania by an Italian ship must be taken to Italy. The decision is the second rejecting Italy's attempt to outsource its migrant crisis to Albania, where it built a detention centre. The judge asked Europe's top court to decide whether the migrants' origin countries—Bangladesh and Egypt—were safe to return to.
The bankruptcy estate of ftx, a defunct crypto exchange, sued Binance and its former boss, Changpeng Zhao, to recover $1.8bn. In 2021 Binance, a rival exchange, sold a 20% stake back to ftx. The estate argues that Sam Bankman-Fried, ftx’s co-founder who is serving 25 years in prison for fraud, made the transaction unlawfully, with customer deposits, because ftx was insolvent at the time. Binance dismissed the claims as “meritless”.
Ishiba Shigeru was re-elected as Japan’s prime minister in a parliamentary vote. In October his party, the Liberal Democratic Party, and its coalition lost their majority for the first time since 2009. Mr Ishiba, who took over as leader in September, resisted calls to step down after the result. As the leader of a minority government, he will struggle to implement much-needed economic reforms.
Britain’s prime minister, Sir Keir Starmer, met France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, in Paris. The pair pledged “to support Ukraine unwaveringly”. The re-election of Mr Trump has cast significant doubt over America’s commitment to maintaining European security. The main purpose of the trip was to attend Armistice Day commemorations in the French capital.
Gunmen fired at a Spirit Airlines plane as it neared Haiti’s international airport, injuring a flight attendant and prompting the airport to temporarily close. The American embassy said that gangs were trying to block travel. The unrest came on the same day that Alix Didier Fils-Aimé was sworn in as Haiti’s prime minister. His predecessor was sacked and he was appointed by an unelected council.
