Jan 09, 2020•35 min•Transcript available on Metacast Episode description
This conversation between Gesine Schwan, President of the Fundamental Values Commission of the SPD and László Andor, FEPS Secretary General, is a reflection about the state of Europe and social democracy. They agree that Europe has to develop new ways to deal with migration and asylum. Professor Schwan argues that EU level solutions should be based on voluntary basis in this field, reinforcing the sense of liberty, security and justice. EU support should be directly available for municipalities and civil society in order to achieve these goals.
This closer connection between the EU and the citizens is also fundamental for other issues like climate change or labour mobility. EU citizenship can be reinforced by strengthening citizens’ participation in the decision making. From a social democratic point of view, fraternity and solidarity have to be at the core of EU integration.
