Trends in Domestic Travel and Tourism in Africa

Challenges abound for the tourism industry in Africa, with the effects of Ebola and national security still plaguing some countries. That being said, there are positive trends coming from the region. Improved travel websites, booking sites and online travel agencies are all a result of improved internet infrastructure and mobile phone penetration in the country. Many countries are also looking to diversify their travel offerings with new hotels, and airline routes are also increasing in the region. Many countries, however, have a long way to go in fully realizing the potential of domestic travel, as many locals see travel as something for the rich or foreigners. Despite this, government and industry players are changing strategies in order to cater to local travelers, although it will most likely be a slow battle.
