Episode description

Want to be a divorce thriver?

It’s possible, even when you’re anxious and feel like a failure.

When Kim’s marriage wasn’t working, she was nearly overcome with anxiety. She did everything possible to avoid conflict with her spouse.

Like the good wife she was trying to be, she was staying married for the sake of her kids. And because she believed marriage was for life. It wasn’t working. She felt like a failure. For three years, she lived in limbo, with tension growing in her home. They hardly spoke. It was so bad that Kim thought a good solution would be if he died.

In other words: it was a nightmare, and Kim didn’t know what to do to make it better. Traditional divorce terrified her. She’d represented clients in family court, and knew all too well what divorce looked like through a lawyer’s eyes: high conflict, lots of drama, and big legal bills. She didn’t want her kids to suffer through traditional divorce. She didn’t want to fight for years, either. That would harm them.

Acting instinctively for the good of her kids, Kim created a healthier and more peaceful approach to divorce. Very soon after they separated, she stopped being angry all the time and felt relief. She began to experience joy. As they moved through the divorce process, there was no drama or big legal expenses. They communicated better and worked together to create fair results that continue to work for their family. Because of this approach to divorce, everyone in their family has thrived.

Even though she has two degrees in law (LLB & LLM), Kim’s no longer a practicing attorney. She dedicates herself to working with families as a mediator or consultant to help them communicate better, figure out what’s best for their family, and divorce peacefully. Kim lives in Regina, Saskatchewan with her two kids, second husband, retired rescue greyhounds and rescue cats.

Most recently, she and her former spouse have begun co-parenting a cat. What makes this remarkable is that he is allergic to cats. “Acting instinctively for the good of her kids, Kim created a healthier and more peaceful approach to divorce.
