The Case of Sweet Fanny Adams - Famous Victorian Murder
News of the Times Episode 405 | 1867
In today’s episode, it is 1867 Alton, near Guildford. A crime so shocking and so brutal has taken place that it is still well remembered over 100 years later.
Three small children are playing together in a field when they are approached by a man who smells of alcohol. He offers to help them to pick berries. Then, he offers two of the children money to go away and offers money to 7 ½ year old Fanny to go with him. She refuses. He picks her up and takes her away anyway.
What is found several hours later is a brutality that is extreme by any standard. There are over 20 body parts found pieced together in a jigsaw fashion, disembowelment, and the eyes of her head had been gouged out and thrown in the river for the fish.
This famous crime permeated the country in a way that only the ripper would do some 20 years later. We take a look at the background, the capture and the conclusion.
For those who like the weird, do check out our further particulars segment involving a gruesome discovery that was walled up in a house from around 1807. The house had been occupied by a religious community.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
