Episode description

News of the Times Episode 136 | 1819 - 1821
Forgotten Fridays 1819-1821
1820 was a pivotal year in British history.  Hearkening back to the failed Guy Fawkes gunpowder plot, the Cato Street conspiracy equally intended to destabilise the government at the time.
The end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 had led to an economic downturn, resulting in high unemployment and increased poverty. The Cato Street Conspiracy was a plot to assassinate several British cabinet ministers and Prime Minister Lord Liverpool in 1820.
The conspiracy was led by a group of radical individuals who were dissatisfied with the government's repressive measures against political reform and sought to overthrow it.  We also look at some of the other stories in the papers between 1819 and 1821 including the spendthirft ways of the new King George IV.
Hosted by Robin Coles.
