Episode description

My guest for this episode is Dr. Sunil Raina. In this episode we discuss the work that Dr Raina has been doing in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh. Uttar Pradesh, a state in India with a population of 200+million, achieved incredible success in sharply reducing its Covid-19 numbers down to single digits.

Dr Raina talks about the methodologies that were used and challenges and successes that were faced in implementing the various initiatives. The strategies outlined in this talk appear in a paper that will soon be released - details for this will be shared on the World Health Network. A previous paper discusses the strategy he proposed for dealing with the huge wave India was facing back in March'21 and is available here. He covers this strategy in our previous podcast with him, which you can access here or on on Youtube.

Dr. Raina is the Professor & Head, department of Community Medicine, at Dr. RP Government Medical College, Tanda (Himachal Pradesh) in North-West India. He is also head of the Multi Disciplinary Research Unit, which is a department of Health Research, Government of India initiative to develop hubs of multi-disciplinary research in select medical colleges of the country. He is also the Director of the Centre for Advancing Tobacco Control in Himachal Pradesh (CATCH) – a Bloomberg-IUTLD funded initiative. In addition, he also functions as the Program In charge for IGNOU (a govt. of India open university) study centre for training of mid-level health care professionals. He is also on the panel of reviewers for projects submitted to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) – A Government of India organization for overseeing biomedical research in India.
