The hockey fan and author spoke to players, hockey parents, NHL employees and journalists for a collection of essays published last year. It’s called, Blackness Is a Gift I Can Give Her: On Race, Community, and Black Women in Hockey, and includes her own journey in a sport that, as she writes, doesn’t always love her back.
