In this episode we have the pleasure of speaking with Rekieshia Norton-Forrest, owner of JJL Candle Co. Rekeisha created her company with sharp intention, starting with something she loved having around her own home, candles!

From this simple passion she went on to create each product with the jewels of our black experience in mind. This is evident in the way she curates each scent, and names them distinctly: you have Bamboo Earrings, Poetic Justice, So Fresh So Clean, Brick House, Tall, Dark, & Sexy, and One Love just to name a few. Then there's the seasonal collection which includes Cranberry Love and Grandma's Sweet Potato! I'm sure you will agree each of these conjures up a full-bodied memory. And Rekieshia has captured the power of each in the chemistry of her scents.

Hear how she researched and thoroughly tested each product before putting them out to market. Rekieshia shares how one of the primary cornerstones of evolving her business has been flexibility. Her success continues because of her willingness to listen to the market and expand her product line from candles to room scents and more.

Being a wife, mother and full-time educator, she shares her challenges (trademark experience) triumphs, and how she manages self-care juggling these responsibilities. Gracefully she lets us behind the curtain of her entrepreneur journey.

Forging friendships with other women of color in the same line of business feeds both her spirit and imagination. Rekieshia recounts how they look out for each other, share tips, ideas and applauding each other's success.

Rekieshia's goal for her business in the next five years is to create a brick and mortal location where customers can come for a myriad of beautiful sisterhood experiences - from brunches and candle making classes, to other themed get togethers. She is committed to creating space for us.
