Join Rebecca Jones in this week’s episode as she is joined by the Executive Director of Jacob’s Institute for Innovation in Education at the University of San Diego, Perla Myers. With almost 24 years at USD under her belt, Myers discusses how she found herself engrossed in the world of mathematics and teaching. Growing up in Mexico City, Perla always loved to paint, explore and create; all of which led her to find passion in collaboration. When asked to describe herself with one word, Perla chose “willing” because she is always willing to try new things and broaden her horizons. The women discuss the reality of failure & the intricacies of youth education, and how important it is that we ensure that mathematics is made fun and accessible to youths across the board. One of Myers’ main career goals is to have people associate math with fun, confidence, and meaning. When asked to give a word of advice to young women following her footsteps into the world of S.T.E.M., Myers encourages them to surround themselves with individuals who not only make you comfortable, but challenge you to become a better version of yourself.
