Episode description

According to the World Bank, Indonesia is the world’s second-largest fisheries producer. The sector creates about US$4.1 billion in annual export earnings and supports millions of jobs. But while the archipelago is one of the world’s largest producers, the industry is highly fragmented, with large swathes of the nation's 12 million fishermen living in poverty. Meanwhile, fishing communities, especially small ones, are routinely forced to cope with fluctuations in demand and price instability.

To address the problem, local startup Aruna was created to bring them closer to customers like restaurants and exporters, similar to how global farm-to-table startups are consolidating the agricultural supply chain.

Today, we go into our 8th episode and unpack Indonesia's maritime and fisheries sector. Joining us is Farid Naufal Aslam, co-founder and CEO of Aruna, the country's largest integrated fisheries commerce platform. Farid and his team are on a bold mission to streamline the supply chain of fishery products by connecting small-scale fishermen to the global market with technology.
