In this week's episode, I was joined by David De Propertis, Director of Essence Project Management, a national project management consulting company with offices in Sydney, Brisbane and of course, Melbourne!

David has a unique perspective on the industry. He began his career as a Quantity Surveyor in the consulting QS space, before stepping across to work within head contracting; initially as a Cost Planner, before moving into a Development Management/Project Management position over his time with Grocon.  He has worked as a Development Director, before stepping across into a Consulting PM role, at Essence Project Management - not often do we get the opportunity to speak with someone whose career has spanned so many specialist sectors of project delivery.

We discussed the differences in roles, the driving factors around being successful in each speciality, and also covered off his experiences and growing Essence Project Management from a team of two, which in just a couple of years has expanded to a team of 16, in Melbourne.  And how they have become a leading consulting PM firm across a number of markets, but also a specialist in the Build to Rent markets.

Given the growth of the BtR markets here in Melbourne, our conversation dived more deeply into delivering projects in this sector.

Amongst other things, in this podcast we discussed:

  • What attracted him to the consulting project management space
  • Planning and acquisition phases, and due diligence
  • Approaching business development from a consulting PM perspective
  • Why is Melbourne a good option for the build-to-rent platform
  • Build-to-rent market evolution and adaptation over the next few years

If you have an interest in the Melbourne building industry, interested in the thoughts and opinions of a leader within Melbourne's consulting and development markets - tune in, sit back and have a listen!
