This is what the Flux. I'm Bratton and I'm justin and it's Monday, the eighth of July. Do the boy get this?

Speaker 2

The average rent in capital cities jump ten boy three percent over the past twelve months, and some experts reckon this will likely get worse before it gets better. You have the main reason you ask still a major under supply of housing, Foxam.

Speaker 2

Three fresh stories today, jussy boy, let's do it for our first Amazon, Netflix and Ko could now outbid free to air networks for Australia's biggest sporting events after a new law passed late last week.

Speaker 1

Could you imagine being forced to watch the AHL Grand Final on Netflix? Wow? Wild? But maybe not so far away?

Speaker 2

So tell me more, well, juzzy boy, A bit of background. We know the top sixteen rating telecasts of twenty twenty three were all sport, Yet.

Speaker 1

We're talking AFL Grand Final, fee for Women's World Cup, Nral Grand Final all.

Speaker 2

Events of national importance and cultural significance.

Speaker 1

Followed in seventeenth position by Married at First Sight the Final Dinner Party YEP.

Speaker 2

Over two million Australians actually watched that, but not quite an event of national importance.

Speaker 1

And because these sporting events are so significant, there are laws in place to protect these events from being behind a paywall.

Speaker 2

It's called the anti siphoning law, and it means that things like the AFL Grand Final could never just only be on something like foxtelp but been manned late last week and your pass that would allow streaming platforms to outbid local services like Channel seven Channel nine, but the digital rights of these events, so while the Grand Final may be on Channel seven four free to air, the digital rights could be on KO or Netflix and.

Speaker 1

This loophole will effectively lock out some viewers who don't watch TV over an aerial connection. Wow. So what is the key learning here? Tech advancements often outpace the legislation it's designed to govern it. Uh until now.

Speaker 2

The anti siphon laws haven't really changed sinceeteen ninety.

Speaker 1

Two, and that means they haven't been updated to include digital streaming rights. That means sports and events can have their digital streaming rights purchased by paywalled streaming services.

Speaker 2

And that's kind of becoming a problem because many households don't have aerial connections anymore.

Speaker 1

In fact, digital streaming makes up twenty percent of all free to air viewing. That means people are watching Channel seven, Channel nine through broadcast video on demand, and that number is growing. Youre on you, So it looks like aerials are going the same way as landline phones down the gurglar.

Speaker 2

For our second story. Air Tasker has announced a five million dollar deal with arn Media swapping Equity for marketing support.

Speaker 1

Little nifty little swap here. I give you this, you give me that. What's going on here? Well.

Speaker 2

Air Tasker is the online marketplace founded in twenty twelve and designed to help people outsource everyday.

Speaker 1

Tasks and you love this one b Man moving houses, home repairs ikea now.

Speaker 2

It' listed on the AIRSX in twenty twenty one and since then has grown to a market cap of one hundred and thirty three million bucks.

Speaker 1

Now, air Tasker's announced a new deal with arn Media.

Speaker 2

The same arn Media behind KISSFM and Pure Gold or radio and be Man. With this deal, air Tasker is swapping five million dollars of equity for marketing and advertising support from ARN. Air Tasker has agreed that after two years it'll either PAYAR and cash with interest or convert the value into shares at a ten percent discount.

Speaker 1

And Air Tasker is hoping these media deals will help it speed up growth and bring more customers and taskers onto its platform. So what is the key learning here? There are many ways for a company to receive investment, including swapping shares for screen time.

Speaker 2

That means giving shares to a media company in exchange for advertising support and.

Speaker 1

The man This is meant to be a win win for both parties.

Speaker 2

Air Tasker can access a heap of marketing and attention without needing to front up the cash.

Speaker 1

And ARN get equity exposure out to a growing business without the need to outlay cash, and likely giving Air Tasker ad space that they haven't managed to sell. So this is a juicy opportunity, especially for companies that are trying to expand fast.

Speaker 2

In twenty twenty two, NBC Universal gave Ossie online betting company points Beat five hundred million dollars in ad space in exchange of five percent of the company.

Speaker 1

And the man air task has got a habit of this now. They recently did a deal similar with oh Media, and these media deals could be its ticket to expanding that network. For our third and final story, Meta has announced its Threads app has hit one hundred and seventy five million monthly active users after celebrating it's one year anniversary. You're not sure about this one.

Speaker 2

Shocked by these numbers personally, So tell me everything you know.

Speaker 1

So we know that Meta, formerly known as Facebook, has a knack for stealing ideas from its competitor, like stories from Snap, like reels from tiktark and when Elon Musk made a wacky changes to Twitter. Threads launched as the new alternative back in July last year, and the Man Threads blew up straight after its launch. We're talking over one hundred million users within five days, and that was largely thanks to Threads accounts being tied to Instagram accounts.

If you had Instagram, you pretty much had a Threads account immediately.

Speaker 2

And now Josey Boy on Threads's first year anniversary, Threads has released some juicy user data. Helped me through it we're talking one hundreds seventy five million monthly active users on the app.

Speaker 1

Still tracking a fairway behind X's six hundred million monthly active users if we believe Muskie stats.

Speaker 2

But Josey Boyd, despite Thread's perceived success, it's still yet to monetize and really find its own identity.

Speaker 1

So what is the key lenning here?

Speaker 2

Creating a strong brand identity is crucial for distinguishing a product in a competitive market.

Speaker 1

You see, being man. When Threads was released, there was a lot of talk about X actually crumbling and Threads being the replacement. But it turns out that X is actually pretty resilient and that means Threads doesn't really have a unique proposition. So now, with X still alive and well, Threads risks being seen as just the sidekick to Instagram or lesser alternative to X, and it wouldn't be the first social media platform to die due to a lack

of identity and purpose. Yep, I take you back to twenty eleven when Adele was banging out Rolling in the Deep and Google launched Google Plus. Uh huh.

Speaker 2

It was intended to be a social networking service that could compete with Facebook.

Speaker 1

And Google had an initial surgeon uses we're talking twenty five million users in just four weeks.

Speaker 2

But it struggled to differentiate itself from other social platforms and.

Speaker 1

Ultimately led to a shutdown in twenty nineteen.

Speaker 2

So Threads has got to do something fast to ensure it doesn't follow the same path as Google.

Speaker 1

Plus plus AMM. Did you know every month your credit score gets updated and in the Flux app we give you the later score that the banks seed, that the lender seed. Is it about time that you see it as well? Make sure to download the Flux app to check it all out. Thanks for listening, and we'll see you on a Wednesday.
