Episode description

Jessica Smith was born as an arm amputee and represented Australia for swimming in the 2004 Paralympic Games. She’s also a loving wife & mother, an author & storyteller, and a highly sought after motivational speaker and MC.

Since retiring from international competition she has dedicated her life to raising awareness around Mental Health and Mental Illness with specific emphasis on body image and eating disorders. Her aim is to highlight that Mental Health is about wellness, rather than illness.

Jess also created the award winning social media campaign 'Join The Revolution' and is an ambassador for Layne Beachley’s 'Aim For The Stars Foundation'.

She was recently awarded 'Emerging Leader' by the Australian Government at the Positive Body Image Awards and was recently awarded a 'Pride of Australia Medal' in Western Australia. In 2015, Jessica was also a state finalist for 'Young Australian of the Year'. More recently, in 2017 Jessica was awarded 'Woman of The Year' by Cosmopolitan Magazine in the Game Changer category

Jess has such a captivating story and she pours out many vulnerabilities in this chat.

You’ll hear her talk a lot about the Mental Strength training she’s done over the years to help with the tough, dark experiences she’s had and how she still utilises those skills in her life now.

Jessica’s new path to motherhood inspired her to create a series of books that celebrates children's differences, and encourages self confidence, no matter their physical appearance.

The first book is titled 'Little Miss Jessica Goes To School' and we kick off this chat talking about the crux of the book and the deep impact it’s having.
