Episode description

Tom Kelly and filmmaker Steve Burger nostalgically explore Massapequa New York’s Sunrise Mall.  The Sunrise Mall was an icon on Long Island’s Nassau / Suffolk border.  The mall has declined as online shopping has cut into retail.  It’s dancing the line between “ghost mall” and soon to be closed mall.

Over the years, the Sunrise Mall has been a home to Sears, JC Penny, Macy’s, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, Stern’s, Woolworth, a movie theater, and countless other “mall stores”.

The mall’s owners Urban Edge Properties are not renewing leases as they expire and are planning to redevelop the property but have not yet announced specific plans.
