Transcript

Welcome to our podcast, The Why in Your 20s. My name is Nat. And I'm Viv. And we are two counsellors in our mid-20s navigating our adulthood away from our home country. In this podcast, we will talk about questions that we might come across in our 20s that link to anything from relationship, identities and uncertainties. What is adulthood friendship so difficult? Why am I feeling this way? What is life full of uncertainties?

Just a platform for us to make sense of the topics or questions in our head that we tend to avoid or shy away. Some topics will be fun, others can be scary and uncomfortable. But sit with it because that's when we learn and grow. Whether you're listening to our podcast while going for your morning or evening walk, or while doing your chores, anything, well come on board and let the journey begin.

Yeah, so before we dive into it, we begin the episode by acknowledging and paying our respects to the traditional custodians of the land on which we meet today. We recognize their cultures, histories and diversity and their deep connection to the lands, waters and seas of Queensland and the Torres Strait. We acknowledge the Niagara people and the Toro people as the traditional custodians of Minjin, the lands on which our office is located and where we meet, work and learn.

We pay our respects to the Niagara and Toro elders, past, present and emerging. Yeah, so Nat, how do you feel about our podcast? I think it's still so surreal. I feel like I've told you, like I think I've gone on different phases from really exciting that we start doing this to feeling so real, but also surreal at the same time that I want to quit. And I think that's, I think that's a good thing of having two people. And it's scary.

It's uncomfortable, but I think it's something that I've always wanted to do. Yeah, a bit mixed feeling. What about you? Yeah, definitely mixed feelings, but at the same time, I'm actually very excited for a project in my life to actually come to life because I definitely do not finish up my projects. Like whenever I start, I'll start one day and then because there's no one keeping you accountable, I just give up and just forget about it.

But now two people really helps with the process and accountability. Yes, definitely. Well, I hope you don't get sick of me. Yeah, we'll see about that. Do the podcast is so like we want to achieve? I think for me, there's a lot that I want to achieve. I personally really enjoy listening to podcasts. One of the big things for me is I feel a bit less lonely and I can feel relate to the host or the topic that they are covering.

It's just feeling a bit less lonely and feeling, Oh, actually someone in the world have the same problem or like concern as me. I really hope this podcast for you guys that who are listening now can feel a bit relate or less lonely after listening to a podcast. If you don't agree with what we said, and that's absolutely okay. But there's a different perspective and different insights on the topics as well.

Sure. Like I definitely agree where listeners will have different views, like probably like even opposite views as we do or what we say or opinions. Because even when I as a listener, when I listen to podcasts, I question about like this person is different from me. Yeah, the views and opinions, their perspective is very opposite from me. And I actually like listening to it because it really helps me to think through, Oh, why am I thinking this way? It's very thought provoking.

And I hope this podcast will be the same for our listeners. And when we talk, like Nan and I talk, it helps broaden that perspective as well. Because we have different views, like we have similarities, obviously, but a lot of different views create different values that we have, that we hold. I really welcome listeners to talk to us and see how different they are, because I'm really interested in seeing that as well. Yeah, in case the audience don't know, we both are from Hong Kong. Oh, yeah.

Came to a new country. And I think it's covered most of our 20s as well. I hope that this podcast can be relatable and thought provoking. But also our experience in navigating our 20s in new country and new culture, even a new language to me, new people, I think is a really good platform for us to explore the questions that we have. And also, if you guys have any questions, we can, through our experience, hopefully we can bring some perspective or insights into that as well.

There's a lot of topics that we want to cover. Honestly, we had so many different topics that we actually can't really... You feel like it's very messy? Yeah, yeah. It's very messy. It's like it covers so much in the sense where you really don't know how to group them as well. Yeah. Yeah. Do you want to tell the listeners what some of our topics will be? Or maybe the topics that you're more interested at the moment right now? I think cultural diversity is one of the big things for me.

As you said, it's a bit messy, but I think identity is another thing because I've spent quite a lot of time exploring myself, who am I in the past two years. Yeah, for sure. Just to spending time with myself and wondering who am I, because you probably know I'm definitely a people pleaser that I don't really have my own opinion.

And the older I get, I feel like I don't know who am I. So I think the past two years, finding myself as well, just from asking questions and thoughts and just even sometimes talking to myself really helped in finding my identity. So identity is a big thing for me. Relationship is another big thing for me. Family relationship, friendship, romantic relationship, I think is also a very important aspect in our 20s. Yeah, for sure.

In your 30s or in your teenagers, I think any stage of life is the connection is very important. What about you? Yeah, I think relationships, it's not only romantic relationships or even family or friends. It's more about how we connect to different things, like whether it's connected to our jobs, things that we value and connected to our past, how we make meaning of it, how we connect with it, how it actually affects us nowadays.

So I think that's like a very main like why question that I have is more like how does the past actually define you and not define you, affect you or changes you, shape you. Yeah, exactly.

One of the why questions that I'm asking and also the uncertainty because oh my goodness, the life that we have or anyone has, it's just full of uncertainties and that's how we deal with it, how we tackle it, how we approach it is very different and how do we actually cope with the uncertainties that we have in life, whether it's job searching, a big thing for us right now. Just in general, as you said, we came here with no family, no friends and we just built that connection with people here.

So yeah, there's like two main why questions. That really summarized on what we want to talk as well. We realize a lot of topics that we want to cover have a common theme is the identity, uncertainty and relationships. It's just all around us and even we started this podcast is a big uncertainty. Whether we go through it, we might not release this episode. We will see. If you guys are listening to it now, means we made it. One certainty, like one certainty but uncertainty on the future episodes.

Yeah, I think it's just embrace it with it. It's easier to set than done. I think having two people really helps the accountability and supporting with each other as well. Yeah, it will be uncomfortable. We will go through a lot of our own experiences or even other people's experiences. Well that leads to the disclaimer part of our podcast.
