¶ Revisiting X-Men (2000): Genre Impact
Welcome back everybody to another episode of Caravana Garbage, where we're taking a look at some of the origin we're taking a l where we're
Great intro, James. I also want to say that before you s we hit the record button and you just stared into space for like five seconds. Are you prepared for this? Are you were you blown away by the majesty of X Men two thousand?
I have extensive notes myself.
Were you shocked by the fact that it has tobacco depictions? Oh, yeah. I watched it on Disney Plus, and that was one of the Tobacco depictions.
Yeah, right.
I mean neither positive or negative, but it
That's happening.
Wolverine is smoking a big cigar and he does look really
He just looks so cool and shirtless, doesn't he? Absolutely.
Absolutely He can smoke a cigar, shirt on, shirt off. While driving.
driving. Yeah. While not driving.
Absolutely.
Yeah. We're gonna be taking a look at the uh early days X Men movies.
Okay, sure.
Now, these movies were critical in making superhero movies big again. They peaked with like Superman and then original Batman 89, which is not the original Batman, there's one in the 60s. Shut up! Please leave a like.
It wasn't over the original Batman as well.
Oh yeah, there was one before that, true. But you know, things had tapered off a bit.
Absolutely.
This movie, of course, is largely credited for revitalizing the genre, even though, to be fair, Blade came before it and also did a lot of heavy lifting. But this was pre-Spider-Man.
Also I think Blade is probably not as recognition. as a superhero property.
Oh okay.
Yeah.
¶ X-Men's Popularity and Early Production
Discount blade. Let's listen to Mason discount blade.
Let's throw it out. Let's chuck it in the bin. I've spoken to a lot of people recently. I that's not true. I haven't spoken to a lot of people recently. I've barely spoken to anybody recently. But I spoke to one person recently, and I mentioned Blade is a comic book movie, and they said Blade is a comic book. Mm. Marvel. But they were just like that's a Dracula movie. But it can be two things.
Absolutely. Mm.
But I would say the X Men up until a certain point, it was probably the eighties or the early nineties. that they were not as recognizable to the general public. Like I think comic book fans love the X-Men. But I think if you went to the general public and said name an X-Men, they wouldn't really know. But it took the X-Men cartoon series, the X-Men arcade game, and then this and that really
You are not wrong. And it kicks things off with a very restrained title sequence for the era.
Remember it being longer.
I mean I think the other ones are longer
Yeah, uhhuh. Yeah. But it is a classic superhero movie flying through the DNA.
Yeah.
DNA's cracking. It's reforming jinx.
No!
Yeah.
All right, man.
Alright.
What's interesting about the story of this one is well a number of things which we'll get into, but unlike every other X-Men movie, it's not based on a specific comic. Oh yeah. And also neither of the other ones really. And anyone that's like named after a specific comic like Days of Future Past or another example. It's really name only and what characters do we have in the MCU not have.
I think you'll find this X Men movie is based on the classic X Men comic book storyline, A Thumping at the Statue of Lipwood. But then of course later it was probably turned into one of those fake comic books in Logan, right?
Sure, yeah, absolutely. Yeah. I I really enjoy this still. There's definitely dated elements, but the action's pretty solid. Kei Kwan served as a uncredited fight choreographer on
Well he says that now.
Yeah. I think it looks great, you know, even things like this did the pin art, which Zack Snyder then stole the Man of Steel, this did it before that.
But he did they did it for a boring building or whatever. And Man of Steel did it for Russell Crowe's face. Which is much more exciting than a building.
Absolutely. I think there's there's a lot of really good practical stuff here that works. Like Wolverine's claws popping out for the first time was out of a prosthetic hand, and seeing that. Was incredible. There's a water guy who turns to water and that's an incredible transitional effect. It's really
Senator Kelly? Senator Kelly! He's more of a Jelly Man that turns out.
Okay, fair enough.
That's Magneto's plan, is it turn everybody into jelly man?
Well not everybody would have turned into a jelly man. They would have had different specific mutations that turned them into
You don't know that for sure. No, what we need is a what if. We need a what if of this movie. Yep. You refilm it exactly as it was, then the b the blast hits them, the mutant blast hits them, and we see what they turn into. Jelly men, triflemen. Yep. Um
Biscotti meno.
Fairy bread men. Lamington man.
Yeah.
Yeah.
¶ Wolverine's Role and Bryan Singer's Legacy
Yeah. I think also this movie does a really good job of taking the concept and the ideas and the characters seriously. At a point too seriously, I think people could safely make that argument.
But also
Okay!
And I think the reason this one works is the same reason that maybe like Iron Man two thousand and eight and the Avengers kinda works.'Cause you have a cool guy, yeah in the case of the Avengers that's Iron Man going, Who's this stupid idiot in his stupid cape? You look
Stupid and then the audience go, uh, this is a bit stupid, and then they sort of get on board, they go, the movie acknowledges this is silly, then we all move on. But this has Wolverine going, What's this stupid house with stupid idiots in it walking through stupid walls like dumbass? You're a dumbass and you're a dumbass and you're in a wheelchair dumbass. So we in the audience go, Well, if a cool guy thinks that's a dumbass in a wheelchair, we can all move on.
Yeah, but Ryan Singer apparently he banned comics on set'cause he didn't want to influence the um the the cast in their portrayals necessarily. Though Hugh Jackman did specifically look at Wolverine from the nineties cartoon just to kind of get an idea of who is this character. I feel like also it's really easy to botch an opening which is set in a Nazi concentration camp, but this does handle that.
really well. There's a great establishment of a school, and I guess this is a good time to point out that Brian Singer has always been a fan of secret activities within a school. Let's talk about it, Mason! So this is directed by Brian Sigar. He has been accused of multiple things over the decades. Oh yes. I could list and here's a list of some of them, different articles. Nothing has
Stuck? He's never faced any kind of serious consequences. He did settle a case in twenty nineteen for one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, but there is a very interesting THR article from a few years back which talks about the hectic behind the scenes of this film. Drug use tantrums, writer feuds, again sexual assault allegations related to three of his friends who visited the set. Apparently he just had like a cavalcade of different people visiting the entire time.
Just a bunch of sus guys.
Seems that way. A number of young men, including some who were minors at the time, have claimed in published interviews that Singer dangled X-Men auditions in front of them in exchange for sex. Things like that.
I don't like any of that.
You're not supposed to, Mason!
This isn't a big world.
trying to win D and Brian Seeker to anybody here.
Good.
Lauren Shuladonna was a producer on this and has been for I think most, if not all, of the X-Men movies. She was quoted in this article. It's a weird business. the film business, we honor creativity and talent and we forgive the brilliant ones. Unconsciously we probably do enable them by turning a blind eye to whatever they're doing and taking their product and putting it out into the world.
Another executive involved in the film said, his behavior was poor on the movie, we accommodated him on the first movie, and therefore we can accommodate him on the second movie, and on and on, and it created a monster. This is also gonna come up later in the video for other things, right?
¶ Iconic Casting and Michael Jackson's Pitch
Anyway I'm gonna go on record as saying uh X Men two thousand probably not worth it then. It's pretty good, but it's not that good.
Yeah. I mean they g it gave us one Hubert Jackman, did it not, Mason?
Yeah, but he was also in paperback hero. Oh yeah. He would have become a big star regardless.
He probably would have. Well let's talk about the cast. Perfect casting, not a foot wrong. Patrick Stewart was fan cast in the early nineties.
Right, and he's so young in this. Ian McKellen is also yold. He's Yold. That's right. Yeah. And the rest are YOLO.
It's funny looking at the cast interviews at the time'cause they're like I don't know this world. I'm a serious actor or I'm handsome. I don't need to know about this. That's right. Whereas now you can't really have a cast saying that. That to be like, well actually I'm I wasn't a big fan, but now I'm a really big fan. I'm probably the biggest fan.
But my f my favourite was Tales of Suspense, issue sixty two with the introduction of the It doesn't matter.
when someone's like, I don't know, it's a character. Yeah. I don't know, they wrote some words down and then I said those words.
I wish they would go back to that. I wish there'd be a the with the the next the next run of superhero movies, there's just a guy and he's pretty good looking and they're like, What was your workout routine? He's like, Nothing. I wore it they they put the muscles in the suit, it's fine. Yeah. I didn't feel like going shirtless, so I didn't. And then I stood on the X and I said all my lines that were in the script.
Yep.
I don't know
I looked at a green blank wall and I screamed or whatever. And then a laser came out of me or through me, I don't know.
And that gave me my pe I don't know, they filmed these out of order. I don't know. Did that take away my powers? What uh comic book storylines would I like to see them adapt next? I don't know. The one that I
That gives me twelve million dollars.
That's exactly right. And the least number of lines. If we're gonna have twelve lines, million dollars a line, I'll take it.
Now uh speaking of casting, Michael Jackson actually came in at one point and wanted to play Professor X. He did this a lot in the 90s. He was like, I wanna be Spider-Man, I wanna be Jar Jar Biggs. He was doing this all the time.
You just said before there are a bunch of sus guys coming in on set, but I don't this doesn't this doesn't uh this track to that at all.
Look, I can't speak to that other than I think he definitely did some crimes. That's all I'm saying. Cue the Michael fucking Jackson defenders. Welcome. Come in. Go fucking nuts in the
Now now is a prime time,'cause that movie's coming out.
Yeah, exactly. Uh Lauren Schuladonna recalls saying to him, Do you know Xavier as an older white guy? And Michael said, Oh yeah, you know, I can wear makeup and with that he cued up an elaborate presentation complete with the short film Ghost. In which the pop star morphed into a sixty something white mare railing against a well meaning performer who entertains local children with magic tricks.
What?
This is a thing that happens.
Make a short film. Did he tailor a new short film every time he pitched himself as a superhero?
I don't know, I think he was probably just doing little vanity projects for himself where he can hang out with kids and be like, I'm special and cool or whatever.
Okay, yeah. Look at these tricks, kids. Yeah. Pretty great.
It's pretty grip.
But then they didn't cast it.
No, they ended up not casting Michael Jackson in this movie.
Okay.
Okay. Anyway, let's talk about some of the movie.
Okay.
¶ Wolverine's Debut and Team Dynamics
I mean a great introduction to Wolverine, having him in a cage fight. He'd worked out more at this point'cause you see him shirtless later and he's. Smaller, lighter than he's
But that's because Rogue took away his powers or whatever. That's how we that's how you no prize it, James. Remember the no prize?
That was after Sabretooth hit him with a tree or whatever. That probably took away some of his power.
Субтитры делал DimaTorzok
Good knockout Wolverine.
Exactly. When Wolverine had some trouble doing a fight somewhere.
Oh, remember when Hugh Jackman didn't work out so hard?
Yes, I do.
It wasn't his entire life?
I do remember that, yeah.
Yeah. Uh famously of course he took over from Do Gray Scott, who was injured on the set of Mission Impossible two.
And he took over three weeks into filming, is that correct?
Uh it was later, yeah. It was very down to the wire. They wanted Russell Crowe and at one point Mel Gibson and I think Russell Crobe was one of the people who recommended you, Jackman, so here we are.
Yeah. All Australians. Not do great Scott. No. But the other three.
You know what's good about this team as well? Like the first time we see Storm and Cyclops doing a little rescue, they're just a really efficient team who are very good at their powers.
Like the boy scouts.
Like the Boy Scouts. I mean, they know what they're doing, like, together, they know each other's abilities and limits and they you know, it's like a tight little unit.
And the opposite number, the bad guys, who don't have a team name, but they're like the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. Yeah, you know, you wouldn't call No. But there what I like about the the bad guys is that they are also very good at what they do. Toad especially. Yes. Because again
He's just toad.
He's just a guy who can jump and stick to walls and he's got a disgusting long tongue and he can shoot out a lot of phlegm. Yeah. But he's had those all his life and he's like, Well, I'm good with those. Yeah. Yeah. And I know karate. So he can fight against someone who You know, can control the weather or shoot lasers out of their eyes or
Because he's fast.
I know Cyclops doesn't shoot lasers out of his eyes, but I'm saying he could fight a guy who should shoot lasers out of his eyes. He doesn't in this movie. He fights a guy who shoots a concussive beam of force from the punch dimension or whatever. But I'm saying he could fight a guy that shoots lasers out of his eyes.
Let's talk about Cyclops, classically underused character in these movies.
Look at it.
Looking real good by the way. Turtlenecks, cardigans, high-waisted pants, Oakleys. Sure, not the Oakleys, but the rest of it. That's an outfit from now. Whereas if you look at what Wolverine's wearing, like a like one of those stripy leather jackets, And then a denim jacket and then like a cowboy shirt, then a ratty old t-shirt and dog tags. That was cool then. It looks like a dirt bag.
What are you talking about recently where somebody had too many?
Tom Cruise.
It was Tom Cruise.
It's the same jacket.
Yeah, absolutely. That was the era, man.
Yeah.
Yeah. Also you have to buy a bunch of weird different sizes, you know? You're buying a medium denim jacket but then a large leather jacket.
Exactly.
It's ridiculous.
I completely agree.
You buy to do that outfit and then you can't wear the pieces with anything else.
You really can't, man.
What are you going to do?
Swimming around with just a t shirt and that leather jacket? What are you talking about, Hugh Jackman?
You dumbass, you're the dumbass You should go to the Xavier School for learning how to coordinate, you dumbass.
¶ Cyclops's Specs and Magneto's Power
Uh Cyclops' Oakley glasses were manufactured with custom specs. Uh
They are custom specs in a way.
Apparently James Martin. Yeah, they are in a way.
Spectacles.
He's gone side. Uh apparently they
That's a real spectacle.
I'm just yes and
Okay. They are good outfits though. Yeah.
Oakley apparently gave Marsden a lifetime supply of sunglasses. I guess okay.
That model of sunglasses.
Eine Holzsauce.
I hope so too. He gets sent a new one every week'cause they know he stamps on them when they get delivered. In Australia those s uh in Australia those sort of sunglasses are called speed dealers.
Yeah. Some people who deal speed.
Exactly, yeah.
Anyway, the bad guy, magnets.
Yes.
Incredible work by Ian McCallan. I love the little touches that you see him do. Like he's doing a little click-clack machine in his office, whatever they're called.
An executive desk toy.
Thank you very much. They have an actual name. There's a moment where he's building a bridge on the fly that's just just forming under his feet. That's so good, man.
I mean, and for Zay Xavier's attempting to build bridges, but they're metaphorical. Boring
Excuse me?
Yeah, exactly.
I'm glad they cut all that out or most of it. I wanna see a man build a literal bridge and then in the third movie lift a literal bridge and be like, I always like building bridges like Professor Xavier or whatever. Remember that line? That's subtlety and that's movie making. You don't always pick up those things the first time you watch them.
That's Chekhov's bridge. You have him build a bridge in the first movie, then tension for the second one.
the bridge.
Then he moves the bridge in the third one. Oh there's the bridge. There's the bridge. Yeah. We call it a magnet's bridge.
¶ Minor Mutants and Magneto's Motivations
Shout out to the minor mutants in this who got recast. Pyro, Miss Run Through Walls, uh Yeah it's Jubilee.
Who never really got her?
No, I they d they did a prequel one where she was a and they go to the mall or whatever. Oh yeah. Iceman or Brackett's boy in this, how's he turning a ball of fire into ice? What's the deal with
I don't know, molecules.
Yeah.
Molecules and DNA. And the the evolution of DNA. Yeah. That's the way they snuck around. I I don't know if you noticed, but but when Professor X is describing Magneto, he says he can create magnetic fields and control matter. Right. So when people go, Oh, actually he shouldn't be able to'cause he could he shouldn't be able to control bullets'cause there's no he's no iron b they're not magnetic yeah. Well he can control metal.
Yeah, listen. Listen. Listen for once in your life.
Yeah, you damn idiots. Yeah. You should go to Xavier's school for knowing
Absolutely. Not us. Because we always listed it and we
Listening one oh one we'd be the teachers. We would be.
Yeah. Listen up we'd say at the start and everyone would chuckle. And then we'd go, This is serious.
That's right.
You think this is a joke?

¶ Behind the Mystique: Actor Challenges
Then we turn our chairs around and our hats around. And then they'd know we were the cool teachers.
You know what I found shocking about the ice ball?
Go on.
So it's Sean Ashmore. Correct. But there's two of him at one point in this, but they didn't bring in his twin brother Aaron Ashmore. They're both him. When when you know there's that scene where he walks past and then mystique comes out of the thing. Oh yeah. It's all him, man. It's just special effects.
Wow. On Thanksgiving.
Probably not very well.
Have they been interviewed about this? Did Sean did Sean Ashmore be like, Hey bro, we did a s we're we're gonna do a scene. Did they Hey bro
Which one of us is Quantum Break? Do you remember?
Did David Hater, uh uh writer of this script, did he go to Sean Ashmore and say, Hey bro, we're gonna do a scene where you there's two of you, there's two Ice Boys. Do you wanna get your brother Aaron Ashmore in on this? And Sean Ashmore was like, nah, he's busy. But he was lying. Yeah. He's busy doing quantum break, unless that's also me. Hmm.
He's still tied from Anamorphs, but that also might have been me. I think we were both in that maybe because there's a lot of morphing in that, you know?
No. Wait, which one am I? David Hayter help me You take on multiple personas as this guy and also Solid Snake sometimes.
Sometimes keep a subtle and we'll do it.
Sometimes that's true. Who am I?
Rebecca Romain, I feel, kills it in this movie, despite what was probably the worst time I've ever done. Hmm. So the Mystique costume consisted of a hundred and ten custom design processes, which cover sixty percent of her body and took nine hours to apply. Uh she could not drink wine, use skin creams, nor fly the day before because it would have caused her body chemistry to change slightly.
prosthetics would fall off. She also said I had no contact with the rest of the cast. It was like I was making a different movie from everyone else. It was hell. Also, fun story. Yes. Fun story. Brian Singer alert time.
There we go.
Monset. Apparently uh his drug use at the time was problematic.
Interesting.
Other things he was doing, leading to late arrivals, mood swings, and explosive tantrums. Some of the characters, like Romaine's Mystique, required hours of body paint before filming as mentioned, and on a whim, Singer would decide not to use her in a scene. Marvel Chief Kevin Feige. Then a young executive working for Shuladonna was dispatched to ensure that someone was keeping Singer in line. Early days Kevin Feige coming in hot with ideas.
How about don't be crooked? Thanks for your input, Kevin, but I'd rather still be crooked
crooked for decades.
Yeah, that's right. If you wouldn't mind.
I do mind actually.
Get back to me when you're the head of Marvel Entertainment, Kevin Feige, if that's even possible for you.
I do think it's interesting that Kevin Feige worked on this and then oversaw thirty plus Marvel movies and TV shows and never has Brian Singer been involved
¶ The Flaws of Magneto's Plan
He was doing X Men movies after this, but that's that says something. Anyway, there's an evil plan. Magnet's got an evil plan.
Sort of in the I thought you meant I thought you meant in real life. Brian Singer's evil.
He does have an evil plan. He has executed many evil plans. Yes. So Magnet has a plan and it involves a big magnet, and the magnet does a big mutation. Not a guy or another dessert or whatever we talked about. Yeah. A custard.
It might turn you into a custard. My goodness. And they're gonna they're gonna pour you over the biggest Christmas pudding in the city and ruin Christmas for everyone.
Uh how does it mutate people using magnets? I don't know. It spins really fast.
Absolutely. It's bad guy technology. Yeah.
Yeah they turned Senator Calley into a Gumby guy and then a water guy as we discussed.
Yeah.
Uh but of course there's one person who could definitely stop him at every turn, if he could get Magneto's helmet off. But of course, Professor X something has to happen to him every movie, isn't it? What do we call?
He has to get Professor. Which is when you take the most powerful character, which almost inevitably is Professor X, and you j you take him out of the equation. In this case, with a big sort of brown soup you put inside Cerebro and it destroys his brain for a bit. I don't know, brown soup. They probably turned a guy into a into a festive Christmas soup. I squirted it in the middle.
But is it like is it is it psychic soup?
Yeah, it's a sort of thing.
Didn't get injected in.
No.
I don't know. Maybe it was just like crooked pornos or whatever but
Maybe.
Reflected in his own.
Maybe they just extracted it from Brian Singer's brain while he was asleep and then they put it into the machine. Oh. And then
Put the real Patrick Stewart into a coma.
He saw it and he went, Oh no, no.
Anyway, I watch this with my son.
Oh yes, what did he think?
There's a new Freaking doomsday movie coming up or whatever. You're gonna know some of these guys.
Now you and you said to him, You gotta keep your grades up, otherwise we're gonna send you to this school. Where all sorts of crazy stuff happens. Wait for X Men two. If you play up, that's gonna happen. I'm gonna send you to the school where there's some sort of special forces mutant.
Fine Cox is coming.
That's what he's got.
Scream at you.
That's right.
Is that what you want?
Yeah. Whatever your acting method is, he doesn't like it. He's gonna scream at you.
He was like, yeah, I liked it, but he was like, it was weird. It was a little it was a little off. Which I think is like probably the era of filmmaking more than anything else.
Right.
Pretty tight movie all in.
Is that because modern superhero movies of which he's seen more? Yeah. Although not in order, because you're not showing him the MCU in order for
He's doing his own thing, he's he's jazzing his way through the MC.
I think you should go to Xavier's school for showing your child how to watch the MCU movies in the correct order. Because currently you're getting an F.
Good. I want that.
But I w I was gonna say because he's seen more modern day comic book movies, is he like, Well, this doesn't seem as authentic to the comic books, maybe, or does that even factor into his mind? Because of course, you know, one of the criticisms of this movie is you know I mean it's it's the X Men on the big screen, but it's not you know, they're not in the e classic X Men uh costumes, you know.
I think he was also he didn't really understand the plan. He's like, What is this?
They're gonna turn everybody into a blange. Son.
He just I don't know.
Getting an F in this class of understanding the plan of Magnet in this movie.
We also spotted Stan Lee in this, which I'd never noticed before.
Is he in the cerebro sequence or is he? No, he's not a check.
On the beach. Okay. He also had some questions about Cyclops. He said, How does Cyclops sleep? So we looked it up. He uh sometimes wears a Ruby Quartz eye mask.
Sure.
Uh he then said, How does he take a shower? So we looked it up and people have uh people have speculated that he either closes his eyes or wears goggles. And he also he liked how mean Wolverine was to Cyclops. He's like, love this. Love bit.
This mirrors my interaction with everybody I know at school. Bullying. Thanks for teaching me that, Dad, in your class on how to bully kids.
You're welcome.
Also sometimes he has uh Rubik Quartz contact lenses.
That's true also, yeah. Does it blast just out of his i little the little circular parts of the eye? I guess it's often called irises. Like the band? Like the song from the band? Shut up, no one cares.
What are you talking about?
seen that trend where people like, remember me in the nineties and then it was and then it's the Googa Doll song and then they like show pictures of them from the nineties? Don't worry about anything.
Okay, that that's a load off my mind, honestly. I was worried about some things.
Yeah.
Okay, I won't.
¶ Storm's Line and Uncredited Contributions
Anyway, toad gets struck by lightning. Correct. This has always been considered by Too many people to be one of the worst blind deliveries and lines in cinematic history. There's a bit of background to this. First of all, I just don't think it's that bad. I think Halle Berry's
Overall performance in this has been mangled and a lot of stuff has been cut out and her accent is kind of all over the shot. But I think a lot of it is also ADR and also, like a lot of characters in these movies, she's underused. It's Halle Berry at like a pivotal moment in her career.
Also, based on what you've said, it seems like Brian Singer was probably coming on set and going like do an American accent, not a British accent, African, I don't know, do whatever. Just African. Wrong! Wrong. Yeah. Now I'll have to do my stuff.
Yeah. But yeah, so the line was in the script, but it's left over from Joss Whedon's work on this. Only two lines from his version.
Oh another cool dude.
Yeah yeah yeah alright.
Not as bad.
Not as bad, no. It's Crook Bloke City in this one, isn't it? Yeah. But um two lines from his script survived that one and also the Eurodec line that comes later. It's supposed to be also said offhand. It's not supposed to be like a such a dramatic thing. But Toad had a lot of lines in the lead up where it'd be like What does a tyrant do when he does this or whatever and
What does a toad have for breakfast? Yeah. Toad sandwiches. What? Sandwiches for breakfast.
What are you talking about? With toads in them. Yeah. Yeah.
No, the toad eats the the sa it'cause'cause it's been made by a toad. You understand why they cut it out. Yeah, yeah. So it would make more sense then when when Halle Berry says the line, it's like it's a it's a She's taking the power back from him.
Exactly.
Yeah. She could have said what happens when a toad gets struck by lightning.
Oh yeah, that would have worked out.
Yeah. Or she could have said he gets flung off a balcony to his death in the in the frozen depths of the New York Arbor or whatever.
Yeah, he might show up in other movies, but he's recap. Don't worry about it. Don't worry about it, Ray Park. Also, she and Cyclops were gonna have their backstories filmed. They were scripted and storyboarded, but they were never shot. I think they factor into later movies. They do them in prequel movies.
Cyclops is a a Garrett. him in the head. Oh really? Yeah, that's how that happens. Actually it's a car crash, but there's already a bunch of car crashes in this movie already, so it's like
What are we doing more car crashes? Yeah, what is what is this? It just happens in a classroom or something. Or they make him take his glasses. It's in an X-Men Wolverine pre.
Like his power he's supposed to be able to control his power. Yeah. Like switching on and off and his brothers. Like his brothers.
Oh
Um. Or hexor.
Let's
Hexor and Sexor. The Summer's Brothers, the other Summer's Brothers.
Thank you. What do they live in the He-Man universe? Yep. All right. Yeah. One of the Summers brothers is in first class, right? Yeah, Havoc. Havoc, yeah. And his dad's a space pirate. It's called Corsair. Correct. Don't worry about it. I said don't worry about it.
I'm not worried.
Uh which part of mistake did Wolverine cut up?
Oh,'cause he chopped off when she was using her fake Wolverine claws.
Yeah.
Just some of her bets? I don't know. I don't know how that works.
works. That was one of the questions my son had and he was like, Wait, does he does she have his powers? And I'm like, Just hang on a minute, just wait a second. And then he's like, Oh no
Wait a minute.
Let the movie do the talking. Different people do the writing. Different men. Let's talk about this.
What do you
I think yeah, a part of her body morphed into it and then it got cut off. Yeah. That's what I think happened.
Yeah, but just molecules? I guess'cause then later she's fine.
He's got a molecule.
Yeah.
¶ Production Scandals & Lasting Legacy
No, not later or earlier. The writing on this. Yes. Anyway, they all run around the statue a little bit. Sab tooth and whatever. No.
Yeah, I know.
And absorbing and magnets and whatever.
Sure, absolutely. Then they all work together as a team?
X jet.
X jet the black double.
Jean Grey is in this.
Yes, that's right. Famka Jansen. Apparently not invited back for like. Deadpools and et cetera and spin off some I mean so I meant like you know MCU like for the MCU Madeline Pryor.
Madeline Pry, very good. Apparently twenty eight drafts of the screenplay were written by several different writers, including Christopher Macquaie.
Mr Christopher Macquarie from the missionary.
That's right, yeah. Well uh from that article I mentioned earlier, apparently Brian would bring people to story meetings who weren't involved in the movie. Young guys, a different person every time. As you mentioned, David Hayter, voice of Solid Snake sometimes most of the time, he received sole credits, but he was actually singer's assistant and was answering phones on the production at the time and he was receiving$500 a week.
But he still wrote the script.
Well, here's the thing, so apparently Ed Solomon and Christopher Macquarie
Solomon, he's from the mini whack friend.
He is, yes. They wrote most of it, but they don't have their name on it. So Peter Rice, who was a 20th century Fox executive, called David Hayden into his office and said, listen, we're gonna give you thirty five thousand dollars and that's all you're ever gonna get beeh. So I don't know whether we got any backhand stuff with that, but yeah, a bunch of people worked on this.
Only one credit. Interesting.
Yeah, just a shamuzzle, just a shaham. Yeah.
Well, I'm not sure.
trivia for men, but if you're not a man you can listen. You can take this on board. Yeah
But you can't share it with your friends.
No.
Right. These are secrets just for men. Secret trivia just for man.
Shortly after accepting the role of magnet, Sir Ian McCallan was offered the role of Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. Uh he had to decline that though, but then he spoke to Brian Singer about his interest in making Lord of the Rings so Singer agreed to rearrange the movie's shooting schedule so that he could uh finish that he could do that. Which I guess that's the one good thing that Brian Singer did while making
Correct.
Some names for other people considered for things. Oh yes. Angela Bassett was considered for stories.
Makes sense.
Natalie Portman turned down to round.
These people thus far have all but become part of the MCU.
True. Ben Athlick, who was considered for Cyclops.
Oh yes, but he's the day of a lot of.
Yeah devil, yeah. And he was paycheck.
He was paycheck, that's true.
Peter Wilson was offered the role of Gene Gray.
Australia's Peter Wilson. or whatever.
Something around that time. Maybe. She was Alex G. Other actors considered for the role of Wolverine were Mel Gibson, Aaron Eckhart, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Vigo Mortensen, who apparently came in and his son was like, You should do this.
Uh I'll be in a history of violence, thank you. Yeah, man. I'll ch I'll pick and choose my comic book adaptations. He does.
Doesn't he? Yeah. Edward Norton, Bob Hoskins, love that. Love that. That is good. Especially like an early 90s Bob Hoskins. Yeah. Beautiful. Yeah. Keanu Reeves and Gary Seneca. Uh and the last bit of trivia for men, just for men. This is this is this is a pretty man centric one. You don't have to be a man though, but totality was.
Hugh Jackman got his testicles caught in his harness after a six-foot jump off the set Statue of Liberty, and that's why his nickname since then has been Hugh Testicles.
Come on, man. You're better than this.
No, I'm not sure.
Oh, I know you.
Haven't you seen that skin of Hugh Jackman where he's got testicles on his chin?
Oh yeah!
Well, if anything, he's not better than it either. Me and him are the same. Except I'm not friends with Rupert Murder.
Yeah, that's true. For now. That's what you're hoping for though. That's what this is.
This video will leave.
Isn't that from movie forty three? Like one of the most famously one of the worst movies of all time. Correct. Terrific. Very good.
Ben doesn't like it when we do hashtags. He's like, What is this for? Who's hashtagging?
We should get Lawrence into to do the just this segment.
But this is hashtag. Everyone. Anyways, box officer for this. On a budget of 75 million dollars. That's a conservative amount. Uh the return was two hundred and ninety seven. Not bad. Solid return, really good DVD and VHS rentals slash sales. This is a big hit. This is a medium size hit.
That's right.
Franchises were back. X Men were back again.
Big merch sales. I got the X Men couplings. Do you? Yeah.
No no no.
Exactly, yeah.
This movie? Yes. Does Hugh Jackman have them on his big stupid leather jacket?
No, Patrick Stewart has money stupid little.
Patrick Stewart. Whatever, man.
Stupid little shirt cup.
Why are you wearing them now?
I'm wearing a t shirt.
What are you talking about wearing a T shirt to this podcast recording?
Sorry.

Har din favoritpåd gått och blivit inlåst av ett lömst företag?
Eller råd.
Ni behöver klart inte ta oss på orden. Här är en äkta recession från Apple Podcasten. Lyssna i två minuter! Absolut inte min grej, men bara. Podden har trots allt 4,5-betyg. Så den är nog bra ändå. En stjärna från Victor. Varför har vi med det i den här?
En del av eri Karlsfamiljen. Ny avsnitt.
