After all the GOTY excitement it's back to business as normal for as much as you can call our business normal. There’s a lot of games to catch up on thanks to another Steam sale and little time to play them. This week we talk about SteamBox, Project Shield, Borderlands 2, Crysis, calves, Hell Yeah, Far Cry 3, describing pizza, The Walking Dead, FTL, Pharoah, shaving and more Minecraft.
2012 is drawing to a close and that means it's GOTY time! This might be the one time in the year we carefully consider which games deserve honour and which deserve being locked in a room with a small radio playing Paul McCartney’s Christmas song on repeat forever. Awards include "Best game that hasn’t really come out yet", “Worst audio thing”, “Biggest surprise” and “Most baffling decision” amongst others and of course the coveted SaladCast GOTY.
Winter and the holiday season makes it tricky to get the team team together but the 3 week gaps do give us a lot to talk about. This week there's plumbing, cars, shoes, Halo 4, Call of Duty, Planetside 2, Burnout Crash, Civilisation V and more!
After a slight break in our regular schedule due to both Zac and Dan being incapacitated last week we are back! And Halo 4 arrived! Zac plays a number of little games this week including Towns, FTL, and Cargo Commander whilst recounting the occurrences during the Guild Wars 2 "Lost Shores" event. Rob takes on two of this year's biggest “triple A’s” with Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 and a bit of Halo 4.
While it would probably be exaggeration to say we subscribe to liking Halloween it does create some unique gaming craziness. "Trick or Treat" is an annoyance at best. Costume Brawl on the other hand... Zac and Rob investigate the special events in Guild Wars 2 and Dan joins them for this year's Scream Fortress. Also played this week: XCOM, Mark of the Ninja and Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine.
Dan's MIA this week. London or something, we don’t know. We never know. Regardless Zac and Rob bring you the sexiest episode ever (lies). Zac plays XCOM: Enemy Unknown and joins Rob in attempting so World vs. World in Guild Wars 2. Also mentioned are Trine, Sonic Generations and Fez.
Finally back in one "studio" after a couple of months of “remoting it in”, it's time for the SaladCast! It’s a kinda “bitty” week covering a lot of little things. Zac covers the release of allegedly the first Kickstarter game, FTL and more Borderlands 2. Rob plays a bit more Saints Row: The Third and exercises. Dan plays Half-Life again thanks to Black Mesa.
In honour of Rob's recent holiday in Paris I thought it may be good, as a welcoming gesture to our European neighbours to introduce this week’s cast in French. Google can handle that right? Let’s see... Zac commence à jouer de nouveaux communiqués de Borderlands 2 et Torchlight 2, Dan passe son attention sur la presque complet mais jouable Black Mesa tandis que Rob joue n’importe quoi à sa portée apparemment. Got that?
There's something about the number 66. Maybe it’s at that point you realise you are old. So by Episode 66, are we now "internet old"? We definitely have the reminiscing bit down and are getting dangerously close to repeating ourselves and forgetting that we have. Rob and Zac play A LOT of Guild Wars 2 and Dan plays some more Max Payne 3 and gives a Battlestar mod for Freespace a whirl. So there’s something about the number 66. You start to repeat yourself. I remember the days when... snore ....
This week was a bit of an experiment. Zac, reluctant to tear himself away from the pre-release time in Guild Wars 2, thought this would be a good opportunity to start some streaming video stuff. So combine that with this week's Saladcast and you get the first Saladcast LIVE. The video stream is available from livestream.com/happysalad and maybe we’ll figure out a way to get some clips on YouTube. Keep following the twitter feed @SaladCast and the Facebook page here for more video fun times in th...
Happy 6-bit episode! We didn't realise during the recording of this episode that we have now done 64 of these. So I’m going to enjoy the moment right now. Yay us! We talk about the Olympics, cars, "louding" and a few video games! Dan pushes through Max Payne 3 with the aid of copious amounts of pills, Rob starts Saints Row: The Third, nearly completes Bastion and attempts to play Nexuis while Zac goes back to Eve, Minecraft, Final Fantasy Tactics A2 and TF2. And yes it did take me 2 days before ...
So do you have "Olympo-mania"? Whether you do or not the next couple of weeks will be full of it so it has to be mentioned right? Or have your recent Steam purchases strengthened your resolve to achieve zero sunlight exposure? Zac continues his coverage of Guild Wars 2 and Settlers 2, Rob finishes Mass Effect 3 and fails to put down the pinball addiction and Dan gets current and plays Max Payne 3 for PC.
Not even treacherous weather and a car accident can hold back the Saladcast. We're like a riderless horse at the Grand National. Rob plays a lot more pinball and keeps chugging through Mass Effect 3, Zac investigates the current indie darling Spelunky (kinda) and good old game The Settlers 2 and Dan finally gets round to playing Total War: Shogun 2.
I feel culturally obliged now that it is Summer in England to complain about the heat. It's not been a nice heat. It’s like a thick sauna heat. Fortunately it seems to make some of our podcast discussions a little more deranged. Zac plays just about as many games as he possibly could this week so strap in for Penny Arcade, Paper Mario, Micro Machines, Pikmin and Cyril Cyberpunk (!!!) mixed in with the occasional input from Rob and Dan about Mass Effect 3, Fez, Bastion and of course TF2. I am ope...
Dan is off once again this week so we welcome back our now regular stand-in Kippers. With E3 gone we can get back to what we normally do. Trying to sound like we know something about vidja games. Kippers mixes things up and goes Blizzard mad with Starcraft 2 and Diablo 3. Zac gives a sneak peek at Guild Wars 2 thanks to the recent beta weekend and then goes all retro as usual. Rob mainly talks Fez and attempts to be a host of gaming podcast with some semblance of professionalism... and fails....
Oh yeah, it's THAT time. Tune in as we give our impressions of the biggest gaming event of the year. Listen to the fails, the mistakes and the "meh" of every conference. Oh and we didn’t do a follow up show yet. Just saying if you find the ending confusing.
In this week's episode we witness the decline in wit and intelligence of the team as the summer heat sets in. Rob seems to forget how arguments work. We’d open a window but we’re not sure the sound of traffic and children playing is really what this podcast is going for. Games covered this week include Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Anomaly: Warzone Earth and Cannon Cat from Rob, Minecraft and Eve from Zac and Bastion from Dan. On the bright side, E3 is soon!
You can blame Rob's crappy back for the lateness of this cast. Thanks to powerful painkillers he is now "back" and casting can recommence. Being able to move is definitely a plus. Once again we are joined by Kippers to discuss his recent involvement in PC gaming in the form of DiRT 3, Battlefield 3 and Blacklight: Retribution. Dan plays “indie” darling of last year Bastion. Rob buys an iPad and starts investigating the casual in the form of Tiny Tower, Jetpack Joyride and then comes back to his ...
Casting at night after a hard week at work does have some side effects. When Rob doesn't speak, Rob is asleep. That mental picture may help in some way. Not sure what it would help and why you need help but this is our gift to the world... thoughtless assistance… yes. We are tired. Dan attempts to talk more spoiler free Mass Effect 3 and provides first impressions of Tribes: Ascend, Rob starts with Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood ( audible sigh ) and Space Invaders Infinity Gene and Zac talks abou...
If you detect any lethargy in this week's episode you can blame it entirely on a Mr. Hut. We do take the show very seriously but pizza comes first. Viva la cheese! Zac picks up show favourite Blur and gives it a spin on PC, Rob finishes with Duke Nukem Forever and returns to sploding and Dan edges closer to the controversial Mass Effect 3 ending we don’t want him to tell us anything about. Isn’t rain nice when you’re not in it. Aah.
It's sunny in March which spells bad news for people who look forward to a good summer. Britain always seems to punish the traditional months of warm climate when they play their cards only. Doesn’t bother us though. We got games to play and shade to cling to. Dan attempts to give us a spoiler free feel for the start of Mass Effect 3 and it’s mechanics (can’t promise we won’t spoil the other two games though) and Rob finishes RAGE and moves onto the critically critiqued Duke Nukem Forever. PS. W...
To make up for the lack of Dan, we're throwing in another SaladCast absolutely free! Season 3 is so on. GDC has been happening so there’s an extra dose of news to discuss. Will Sim City 5 be any good? Has KARA won the animation wars? Are 343 Industries trying too hard? In addition to this Rob uses his Kinect for fitness with Your Shape: Fitness Evolved 2012 (horrible name) and Zac plays Bejeweled. Odd week. I hope somebody gets the terrible title pun.
Due to my spending most of this weekend away from Salad HQ, getting Dan to the "studio" proved tricky. Zac was not amused and a German part came forth exclaiming “ve must not fall behind!” So what we have here is another cast featuring Kippers from MagicTheGatheringUK and his lovely hand model Jam Jarrr. Rob continues his RAGE, Zac and Jam talk Minecraft 1.2 and Kippers gives his opinion on arena shooter Nexuis having gone back to a stint of Left 4 Dead, dreaming of more good co-op games. Also i...
It was exhausting, but we have recovered ourselves a Dan to bring back the structure we crave. Admittedly our structure is a bit like a paper tower in the rain, yet still we crave its moist sanctuary. After a brief recap of the recent Vita reviews Dan continues bashing his way through Skyrim, Rob gets his finishing rants on Uncharted 3 and L.A. Noire out while Zac keeps us up to date on the essential Dwarf Fortress update.
This week, instead of cancelling the 50th episode of the SaladCast due to the snow stopping Dan from being present, we replaced him. Welcome to the fray DJ Kippling (a.k.a. Richard) from the MagicTheGatheringUK YouTube channel. Cross promotion y'all. We talk the Vita this week and all the "shoulda woulda coulda" stuff after Kippers got some hands-on time, Zac investigates the Skyrim competitor in Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Rob plays LEGO Harry Potter (no really).
The weight of the backlog is firmly upon us now. Fortunately it's one of those points in the year where there’s a lull in the release schedule allowing us to begin the catchup. Although Zac seems to have gone a bit far with the idea. Aside from starting a proper argument about DiRT 3 being potentially worse than DiRT 2 (somehow), Zac catches up with games he’s already played to death in the form of Rollercoaster Tycoon and the "relevant again" UFO: Enemy Unkown (the first X-COM, don-cha-know). R...
Bringing in the new year in the best way possible, like any other week, it's time to start tackling that backlog. It's like plumbing that you never fixed properly and gurgles to you in the night, tormenting you into submission with the stench of guilt. I hope that's guilt... For a game we're still a tiny bit 'meh' over we don't half talk about it a bit. Skyrim is indeed mysterious in its ways. Dan gets in on the discussion this time as Zac tries to figure out how you play the game sensibly. Rob ...
Oh ho ho? What is this? Why it's only the 2011 Game of the Year Awards! In what has been a ridiculously good year for games a lot of these decisions were tougher than ever (or at least one time before). Who disappointed us the most? Who tickled our ear canals with its sweet melodies? What should we have played? And of course, what is the official SaladCast GOTY? All this and more in this bumper episode.
In this, the last proper cast of the year before the GOTY event kicks off we totally forget to wish you a happy festive season or some equivalent. So enjoy your time off work and enjoy it even more when you listen to this, The SaladCast. Rob catches up with L.A. Noire and the overlooked Timeshift, Dan glides around Arkham City and Zac tries to put off a few more Skyrim rants to talk Indie and Battlefield 3: Back to Karkand. So happy fun times! Zac says "Eff 'em" BTW. Cheery.
