Send Krystal a Text Message.

Your podcast numbers have stopped growing - maybe even slumped a little bit. And you're not totally sure why. Does that sound familiar?

In today's episode, I'm giving you some insight into one of the reasons your podcast might not be growing. We're getting real in the conversation about how you can't just create amazing content and expect people to find it.

If you're not taking time to work on telling your potential podcast listeners how they can listen to your podcast and why they should, you're missing huge opportunities for growth! (I'm also bringing the tough love on why I think it's a bad idea for you to outsource this one key part of your podcast.)

You'll walk away from today's episode with a newfound motivation to pay attention to the workflow of your podcast and why you're the person that's going to make or break your show's growth over the next year.

Intro

Why is my podcast not growing? I hear this a lot. And it's actually one of those things where my heart really goes out to the people that asked me this question, because I hear it a lot. And for those of you that don't say this out loud, I know you've thought it, I know that you've logged into your podcast statistics, and you look at them. And you've said to yourself, This is the day, I know, I'm going to look at these stats, and they're going to be so much higher than they were the last

time that I looked at them. But then you get disappointed, because that doesn't happen. And then you're like, What am I doing wrong? What? Like, I've been consistent. I've been putting episodes out, what am I missing? If you felt any of those, like, I mean, I, it's funny, because I was not expecting I mean, here we are, we're just a minute into this episode. And I'm like, Oh, my gosh, like, I was not expecting to feel all the emotions that I feel behind that. But hear me when

I say I feel this very, very deeply. Because I've been there. I've been there on multiple occasions where I truly believe in this is so silly. But it's true, that if I just hit the refresh button, more downloads will show up. Or if I just put one more post on social media, then my numbers will just blow my mind the next time I go in and look at them. But the truth is, that's not a great strategy. The refresh button and one more post on social are not going to make a difference in your

podcast. But today, I'm going to share with you a little bit about what can make a big difference with your podcast this year. So let's get right to it. Welcome to the profit podcast where we teach entrepreneurs how to start launch and market their podcast. I'm your host, Krystal, Proffitt, and I'm so excited that you're here. Thanks for hanging out with me today. Because if you've been trying to figure out the world of podcasting, think of this show as the time saving shortcut you've been

looking for. So let's get right to it, shall we?

Podcasting Means So Much to Me

Okay, you know, you've been podcasting for a long time when you start to talk about different parts of your journey, and you get emotional like it's your child, right? I mean, I don't know if you've ever felt this way, too. It's kind of like, I would, you know, hold this up against writers that write books, right. And then they'll say, oh, my gosh, that book is my baby. Like it took me nine months

or 17 years to birth this thing into creation. And now I'm going to publish it, put it out there for people to look at it, read it, hold the cover, like have something tangible in their hands, but they're also going to judge it. And I feel the same way about podcasting. As a creative person, which you are, you may not consider yourself that if you're like crystal, I'm not the creative type. Well, if you're creating content through your podcast, I'm going to go ahead and call you a

creative person. Because it takes someone with imagination, especially those of you that are creating solo content, you're literally in a room by yourself with a microphone, having to imagine what someone on the other side of the microphone or the headphones are hearing. It's literally what I'm doing right now I'm imagining you going on your walk, or you're with your kids, or you're folding laundry or you just you know, leash up the dog and you're gonna go around the neighborhood.

Maybe you're driving like these are all the things that I imagine you're doing while you're listening to this. And it's a little scary for those of you that haven't really had that gut check moment of your podcast means something more than just recording something and putting it out there. Because I know there's we have a whole spectrum. We've talked about this in the last few episodes. There's like a spectrum of where I see people falling in the podcast categories that listen to

this show. It's like I've subcategorized listeners from those of you that are just in the planning stages, and you're thinking about creating a podcast and that goes all the way to those of you that are advanced, and you've been doing this for a few years. I mean, we have a whole range of people that listen to this podcast, but at the end of the day, the most important thing that I want to talk about today is why your podcast isn't

growing. Now it's You have been around, maybe you heard it here on the podcast, you saw a post on social media, or maybe you got an email from me. I'm doing a free training coming up in the next few weeks.

4 Reasons Your Podcast Isn't Growing Promo

So if you're listening to this in real time, it's actually just coming up. It's right around the corner. But you can go register for the four reasons your podcast isn't growing, and what to do about it. You can go to KrystalProffitt.com/training to register, but I'm going to have a link in the show notes and all the things trust me, if you're in this hemisphere of following me on the podcast, you will absolutely

see information about this training. But what I wanted to do today is I wanted to take one of those things that I'm going to take, take teach, oh, gosh, I got tongue tied, all of a sudden, I'm going to take one of the reasons that I'm going to teach in that training. And we're going to get a little into it today. So if you're you've already signed up for the training, well, this is a

preview of what you're going to get. But when you sign up for the training, you're going to get me on camera, you're going to get a full-blown presentation, you're going to have a chance to ask questions like it's the whole shebang. Whenever I do a live training, I go all out. And this one's going to be really, really good.

Not Knowing How to Ask People to Listen

But I want to talk about what is going to be number three of the four reasons. And this one really hits home, especially because it has kind of evolved since I started podcasting to it's something a little bit different today. And we're gonna talk about that. But it's really based on the popularity of podcasts listening, it's a lot more mainstream. Even when I was starting, there were only about 500,000 podcast back in 2018. Isn't that nuts like that's, that's so crazy to me

that there was only 500,000 in 2018. And now there's over 2 million. So you can see the growth in podcasting, all the spotlight and podcasting. But Reason number three that we're going to talk about is your podcast isn't growing, because you don't know how to ask people to listen to your show. And basically, it's podcast marketing, right? You don't know how to tell someone to pick up their phone and listen to your podcast other than saying, there's a new episode. Hope you

listen. You some of you are like cringing right now. Because you're like, ah, that's what I do. Is that bad? Is that wrong? I see you, I know that you're there. I've done it too. Don't worry, which is why we're talking about this. And this is also one of the reasons why your podcast isn't growing, you find yourself totally annoyed by the number of times that you say there's a new show, you should go listen to it. But then nothing happens. No one listens. And you're left wondering why not like

what did I do? Right? Like it's almost this like, shameful experience of like, I did the thing that crystal told me to do. I'm consistent. I show up, I post I publish, I edit I do all the things, why is my show not growing? Maybe you don't know how to tell your people to listen to it. So in the training, we're going to go a lot more in depth. But for those of you that just want a quick fix, right? I get it everyone wants a magic bullet to really figure out like, well, how can I change

this? How can I make this work?

What to Do About It

Here's what to do about it. If you're feeling awkward or weird about promoting your own content, we must fix it this year. Don't let 2022 be the year that you still walk around saying well, my show isn't growing, but I'm just still posting, I'm still showing up. It's not good enough. Okay. It is like having the best kept secret from your audience, but you don't know how to tell them about it, your content could be so freaking amazing. But if you can't tell people

about it, it doesn't matter. It really doesn't. You might as well not even create the content if you can't tell people about it. So I hope that you come to the live training where I'm going to give you a little bit more tips and some strategies for how you can up your game for podcast marketing, how you can get more comfortable. But the bottom line is is what I'm going to tell you there but I'm going to go a lot more in depth is you have to add value. Why? Why should someone listen to your

podcast? It's It's really that simple. Whenever someone comes to me and says, My podcast isn't growing, and I asked them I always asked that follow up questions like well, what are you doing to promote your show? Somebody says it's not working. I check my stats are the same. I'm still posting what are you doing to promote your show? Well, I post on social Okay, well show me your Instagram or show me your Facebook group or show me your email like What are you actually doing?

And I will see, it's literally a graphic. They're not in it. It's just a post that was probably from an auto publisher. We'll talk about that to the training. But it's something that was like auto publish to their social media account, because they're like, Oh, well, that's just easier. It's just easier. If I let it auto publish for me. You know, my, my social media manager does that or some automated tool does that. This may be the key to your growth being stunted.

Don't Outsource Everything

You can't outsource everything. Let me say it again, for the people in the back. You cannot outsource everything. And unless you have hired someone that knows marketing really, really well. I would recommend that you do not outsource your podcast marketing. Yeah, that's right. You heard me, you heard me, don't outsource your podcast marketing, I would rather see you hire someone to help you with your show notes.

Hire someone to help you with your editing, hire someone to help you with your launch if you want to, but do not outsource your marketing. Unless you know someone that is really damn good. Like, you know, they're going to get you results. And the reason why is because they're not going to be as invested in your podcast as you are. That's the

bottom line. If you tell someone like oh, yeah, you know, we have to post on social because somebody out there in the universe said that you have to post on social, and you have to just say there's new episode go, Listen, this is why it's not growing. And I'm not gonna get into I'm not Oh, oh, you hear series. She's She's screaming at me right now, because I'm getting fired up. I

don't know where she heard that. But here, let me she's like wake read felt they were you screaming at I did to get it all this conversation, Oh, I get so frustrated because people come to me. And they say I've outsourced everything in my business. Because it's what I was told to do, I'm supposed to just create the content, and then watch everything grow by the millions and millions of downloads that are gonna come. It's really not

how it happens. It's really not. And as the creator that is you have your show, you are having the conversations with your guests, you are the one that is creating the solo episodes, you are the one that's doing the planning, you're the one that's creating the content, you already have this marketing knowledge in your brain, it is possibly ingrained in you on a deeper level than you can even imagine. Because if you're planning content, and then you're recording the content, then you're

editing the content. By the time it gets to marketing, you already have it all on your brain. It's like you've gone through four different rough drafts of what you really want to say about this piece of audio, you should be able to do it really, really easily. You should be able to say you know what, if you listen to this episode, you're going to get boom, boom, boom. And that's it. That's all you have to say on social, it's not listen to my episode, it's, Hey, here's why you

should listen to it. This episode is gonna get you so motivated to understand how you can talk about your podcast, or understand the reasons why you shouldn't outsource all of your podcast marketing, either one of those are good things that I could say about this podcast episode. But you have to just stop being lazy. That's really what it is. I'm just gonna call it out. Stop being lazy with your marketing. That's what you're doing. And it's one of the reasons why your show isn't growing the

way that you want it to. Don't get me wrong, I love and automation. Oh my gosh, you should see the back end of my business and how much I have automated. But when it comes to my marketing, that's all in house. That's all me. Because like I said, I've already gone through several iterations of what the episode is about that when it comes to posting on social when it comes to writing that email that goes to my list every single week. I know exactly what I want to say about my content.

And this is some if you're not good at it, then maybe you should practice. Maybe you should, you know, take read a marketing book, I have some great suggestions, reach out to me, send me an email, send me a DM I'll share with you all of my favorite marketing books. But you, as the creator have to get more comfortable sharing your content, sharing the value that you're adding. And if you don't know what that is, please come to this

training. It's going to be so helpful for you again, it's called for reasons your podcast isn't growing and what to do about it. It's going to be really crucial to your podcast access in 2022. For you to be able to talk about your show with confidence to this is a whole other thing is like not just, Hey guys, I think yeah, I put out a new episode. And yeah, I think that you should, you

should go listen to it. It sounds like that kid that's like sitting in the corner like whispering and you're the teacher and you're like, Hey, can you can you speak up? I can't understand you or look me in the eye. I can't, I can't hear what you're saying. You have to have confidence, confidence in your content.

Outro

Maybe that should be my slogan of the year confidence in your content. It's got a nice ring to it, right? But I want you to have this. So again, go sign up for the training, it's going to be linked in the show notes, go to KrystalProffitt.com/episode323. I kept this episode short today because I wanted to leave so much good stuff, for those of you that are

But that's all I have for you today. So if this is your first time tuning in, make sure you subscribe or follow the podcast wherever you're listening. And I want to see you in the training.
