Intro

Okay, just so you know, like the behind the scenes of how this goes because I know you're interested. You're like, does Krystal mess up even though she's done 1000 podcast episodes? Oh yes I do. Oh yes I do. I actually just hit record I had a total brain fart and was like, wait, what was I? What? Huh? What was I even about to say? And I was just like silence for a long time. So just stop it and say no, we're gonna start this over again. So I feel like I've been starting the episodes last jives with like a behind the scenes of either my weirdness or quirkiness or just something to do with the behind the scenes life of a podcaster. The Real Housewives of podcasting. Ooh, my trademark that right. The trademark well Is it oh my gosh, I'm thinking of a movie, where it's like, oh, no, it was friends. It was friends. It's totally from friends where Ross is like, a verbal contract is legally binding in the state of New York and I feel like the Real Housewives of podcasting. Actually, no, that's terrible idea. Anyway, I'm just gonna, we're just gonna throw that idea away. It was terrible. I was just thinking out loud and I should have just, it should have gone through the filter of, should I share this with other people or leave it to myself and I said it out loud. So we're just gonna delete it. We're gonna pretend like that moment didn't even happen. We're gonna start over. I am so glad that you're here with me today for this trade wreck of the show, but you know what, here we are. And I am happy that you're here because today, we are going to talk about how you can turn your podcast in to profit. So let's get right to it. Welcome to the Proffitt Podcast where we teach ourselves Print tours, how to start launch and market their podcast. I'm your host, Krystal Proffitt, and I'm so excited that you're here. Thanks for hanging out with me today. Because if you've been trying to figure out the world of podcasting, think of this show as the time saving shortcut you've been looking for. So let's get right to it, shall we?

Podcast to Profit

All right, yeah, I totally understand that. You know, the word profit has multi layered meanings for this podcast, which is why I don't really use the word profit P-R-O-F-I-T very often because I never want someone to think that I'm talking about myself in like a third person, weird kind of way. But today, we're actually talking about profit, like we are talking about making money and monetizing your podcast but I didn't want it to be all about podcast monetization, because that's like another layered level. You'll understand I promise if you're confused right now, I promise I will make this clear as mud here in a second. So the my grandma always used to say, it's clear as mud, right? Oh my gosh, I just thank you so much for listening to the show. Still, even though it's full of shenanigans, and I feel like lately it's been a lot more quirky and ridiculous. It's a good word. It's been a lot more ridiculous lately, but it's because I'm on the edge of my seat waiting for these children to go back to school. And I'm getting a little giddy because they are supposed to be in school as of today. And I'm recording this before this episode airs. So I'm crossing my fingers that everything happens and when this episode goes live, they're actually in school. But as of me recording this, they are still at home. So I think that's where part of that comes from. But anyway, okay, so we've talked about monetizing your podcast the whole month of August 2020. All of the content all of the podcast episodes, YouTube videos, most of the things I put on social media, were all dedicated to the idea of monetizing your podcast well before you have thousands of listeners and millions of downloads, and I'm gonna link to all the episodes and everything related to monetizing your podcast in this episode shownotes so KrystalProffitt.com/Episode186. You're going to see the five ways to monetize a podcast and all the other episodes that we've talked about.

Own Your Podcast Title

But today I wanted to specifically talk about how you podcast listener, you I will talk about how you can take your existing content and turn it into profit. Now, there is a caveat to this episode, because I am not talking to all podcasters I like and when I say podcasters kind of in air quotes right Because I want all of you to consider yourself podcasters even if you have not even launched your show, in my opinion, if you have written down some ideas and hit record, wherever you hit record for your show, you are a podcaster. Okay. I want to make that very clear because some people could podcast for like six months and they're still like, Yeah, but I'm just like a new podcaster I'm not actually a no, no, no. Before you actually launch your podcast, you are a podcaster. So own it. Own the title like you're rocking it. Okay, just by showing up being vulnerable and being able to record yourself. You have earned the right to call yourself a podcaster. Okay, so let's, let's get that one mindset, like out of the way right now.

If You've Been Podcasting for 6+ Months...

But today, I really wanted to focus on podcasters that had been creating content for six months or more. Now, why do I say six months The reason is because most newbies are trying to figure out their podcast within the first 20 episodes. If you've been podcasting for a while you're nodding, you're like, Yeah, I was really trying to figure out the format and the content. And my listeners where I needed to promote. I was trying to figure out editing all the things. And don't get discouraged. If you're brand new, and you're like, Oh my gosh, it's gonna take me six months to feel comfortable. No, no, no, no, look back up. That's not what it's not what mama said. I was talking about podcasters that will have the confidence to monetize their content, it's going to be probably about six months. And that's a very general estimation, too, because that's assuming that you're only putting out one episode a month. It's highly focused on what your topic is about and it is for your listeners. They are engaged in every single episode. And you're not just trying to, you know, stumble through the first few episodes anymore, like you've got a handle on it you feel confident every single week, whenever you're publishing your shows, okay? Those are the podcasters I'm talking to today because if that is you, if you are listening to this, then there is a good possibility that you have the confidence, the expertise and know how to take the existing content that you have, and turn it into something that could be profitable for your business. So the other side note that I want to say is if you've been creating other types of content, whether it's video or blog content or Facebook Lives, you can apply this same concept to that type of content as well. But like I said, I really wanted to talk to people who had been podcasting for six months or more and are super confident because if You teach on your podcast. And I know this won't apply to everybody because some of y'all in this community have podcasts that are about inspiration, motivation and encouragement. And you don't necessarily teach you just share inspiring stories or you help people walk through mindset, which that is teaching. So let me let me throw that one out. That doesn't count. But if you are just entertaining people, and you have no other agenda behind your show, then this could be a little bit harder to apply to your podcast. But I want you Those of you that do teach, educate, impart wisdom and share strategies on your show to pay attention, because there's a good chance that you can create something profitable from what you're doing on your podcast. And there are four things that I specifically want to talk about today. And those are processes And strategies, your most downloaded episodes, what you do differently and where you have achieved success. Those are the four things that we're going to talk about.

Processes/Strategies

So the first one is processes and strategist strategies. And it's funny because I was just I get caught up on that because I heard a lot of other people that say processes. And that's one of the things that bugs me. It drives me nuts because I'm like, no, it's processes and I know I say many things wrong. But do you ever hear things that you're just like, you know, it's like Potato, potato, tomato, tomato, and people say things differently. It's one of those that irks me a little bit I don't know why I don't know why and I know if you're listening you're like Krystal, your accent drives me up the wall but I listen because I you have people information, but there's some things that you say that I just do not care for. It's okay. We can agree to do disagree on how you are supposed to pronounce words, but I say, processes and strategies. And so and I just thought of my husband, he says scenario and I say scenario. So that was another one that just popped into my head. Okay, let's get back to what we were talking about processes and strategies. Do you do things in a particular order in your business in your life as part of your regular routine that could benefit someone else. Now, this has kind of a two way street, on whether you actually teach these things on your podcast, or you just do them behind the scenes as you prepare for what you talk about on your podcast. So I'm gonna give you two examples of that. So with this show, I actually had a process before I started teaching podcasting. For I had a checklist of Okay, these are the I think it was like 13 steps. Now I have a way bigger checklist. But whenever I was first starting, it was 13 steps to create a podcast every single week and I wrote everything down. And I didn't share it with anybody because it was just for me, it was for me to not forget anything because I would get to the day that an episode is supposed to air and think, oh, crap, I forgot to do this. And then I forgot to share it on LinkedIn. And I forgot to, you know, create this graphic the night before the day before. So now obviously, it was a hot mess. It really was until I created a checklist to make sure that I did this every single time. So I want you to ask yourself, do I have checklist strategies or particular things that I do on a regular basis that either people ask you about, or that you think that your audience would find better? Official, because and you'll know I've been talking about digital courses, because there is a good possibility that you could take that content and create a digital course or like my, my mentor, Amy Porterfield, she talks about there's three different types of digital courses. And she recently did a podcast episode about this, and I'll link to that in the show notes. But she talks about there's a signature course, a spotlight course and a starter course. So a starter course, which is where someone is just easing into whatever industry that you're in, or whatever topic it is, like if it was for podcasting. I could create a starter course, that's just about my podcast checklist like hey, these are the 13 things that I do every single time before I publish a podcast episode, I could throw together a course and sell it for 50 bucks and anybody That just wants to know, the behind the scenes what I do to create my podcast, boom, there's a digital course. So that's one way to share your processes and strategies. The other way is I want you to think about ways that you have gotten results doing things in a very specific order. Now, the way that this is different is because with mine, my example is a checklist. But for someone else who has a higher level strategy, whether it's okay, you have to get in the right mindset, and then you have to, I don't know, I'm trying to think of a good example, like, let's say apply for a job interview, right? That's not just cookie cutter, do this, this and this and you will absolutely get the job right. It's more about Okay, here's how you prepare yourself mentally. And then here's how you have more confidence before you even apply apply for a job. And here's how you show up to a job interview, just exuding all of the best qualities about yourself. And here's how you answer questions that are sometimes trip people up. And here's how to follow up after it like it's a little bit more technical, but it's still a process. So if you are someone who is a job recruiter or a, like a headhunter, and you're trying to help people get booked on interviews, then that's a great place to get started with a digital course. Or if you're trying to help people follow up after an interview, that's a great way or how to make sure that you get a callback for you know, the last few people and to be honest, I haven't been on job interview and so long, I'm sure that the process has totally changed. But these are just the examples I'm thinking of. So, number one, I want you to think about the things that you can teach whether it involves a process Or a strategy that you either teach on your podcast or you utilize in your online business or your everyday life.

Most Downloaded Episodes

So the second thing that I want to talk about is, I want you to consider and again, this is why we were talking to podcasters, who have six months or more for their podcast content, I want you to take the most downloaded episodes, and consider if you could turn those into a digital course. Now before you're like, well, Krystal, not all my content is related. I'm gonna say, What is all of your podcast content not related, first of all, but second of all, I want you to look at your content from the eyes of your listener. Okay? So go into if you have a buzzsprout account, go into your stats. And then from there, you can go into episode downloads and you can sort by your most popular Look at your top 10 or your top 20 podcast and see if you can kind of see the writing on the wall, like, are all of your most popular episodes related to a specific topic? Or maybe they were interviews that were just incredible. But again, those might have been about specific topics like these are kind of the breadcrumbs that you should follow whenever it comes to turning your podcast into profit. Because this is your listeners voting with their downloads, right? You've heard the term voting with your dollars. Voting with your downloads is what your listeners are doing every time they listen to a podcast, or they share it with someone else, and then they listen to it. So if you have a podcast that you think is just going to be fantastic, and then you go check the stats, and it's a total flop compared to some of your other episodes. That is a very clear sign that your audience just isn't interested in it and it's kind of it's sad. Sometimes I'll be honest with you, I've put out episodes that I have put my heart and soul into. And I think this is just gonna blow their minds and knock their socks off. And it's gonna be, it's the best podcast anyone has ever created under the sun. And then it's a total flop. And it's very disheartening as a content creator. But then there's days where I will literally throw together an episode and I'm flying by the seat of my pants, and I'm just like, well, I'm just gonna throw this out there, maybe somebody will like it. And it ends up being a fantastic episode like one of the top episodes that I had for the entire month. So pay attention to what your audience is listening to look at those most downloaded episodes, and consider if you can turn any of that content into a course now, I'm going to reverse engineer this for you for a second because I didn't use my book. intent to create a course. But a little behind the scenes. I do have a book coming out in October 2020. If you did not know this, it's how to start a binge worthy or what is it? Oh my gosh, remember the title of my book it start a binge worthy podcast a step by step plan to create a podcast your audience craves. And what I did is I used content from my course. And I put it into my book. But if you have content that is in the form of podcast, episodes blog post, you could actually create a course out of that content and I want you to do this, I want you to repurpose your content in as many ways as possible that allows you to have like, connect with your audience at different touch points. It's why I have a podcast and I have a YouTube channel and I post up on social media. I'm trying to appeal to my audience and show up for them right where they are and grow on a basis of video, audio, written word and all the things. So I know I kind of went off on a different tangent there. But I want you to take your most downloaded episodes and consider if there is a pattern that you can use to turn that content into some sort, of course. And again, I'm going to link to Amy's recent episode on the three different types of digital courses because there's a good chance that a lot of you have content there that you could spin up into a digital course. So that's the second thing is to talk about processes and strategies taking your most downloaded episodes.

What You Do Differently

Now the third point is what do you do differently than other people in your industry. I'm going to give you an example from my own personal life and that is what I do in the way that I teach. podcasting is a lot of other edgy haters that are in the podcast space spend so much time like an insane amount of time talking about the technical aspects of editing and your software and the right equipment and I just don't do that. And the reason why is because I didn't have the money and I didn't have the desire to go out and spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on podcast equipment. I still don't to this day and I've been doing this for a very long time. I have spent some money Don't get me wrong after I've, you know, made a great sale and you know, got some Christmas money. I was like, you know what Mama's gonna treat herself I'm gonna get that's when I bought my test cam recorder. It's actually when I'm recording on right now. But I didn't do that in the beginning. I just got really scrappy and I did what I could with what I had. And I know a lot of you appreciate that about the way my style like my teaching style is because I just show up and I meet you where you are and tell you, hey, if you only have an iPhone and a set of earbuds, yeah, you can record a podcast. And people get blood Like what? Wait, what? Huh? We talked about you can actually do that? Yeah, you can, you can absolutely do that. And so, my approach to doing things differently, although some of the steps may still be the same in the way I teach compared to another podcast coach, podcast educator, I focus so much more on the content because you can figure out your equipment and you can figure out your software. But at the end of the day, if you don't know what to talk about, or you don't know how to keep creating awesome ideas for your podcast listeners, you could be sitting in a million dollar podcast studio and not have a frickin clue what to talk about. And that's where the problem lies. So that's what I do differently as a content creator. As a course creator, I teach my students and members of my community to focus more on the content and intimately understanding their audience so that they can continue to deliver a show because you can always upgrade later, right? Like, I started with the $20 microphone. And now I have much fancier equipment, but you just need to get started. Right? Like that is the whole premise, the underlying message of everything that I teach is you we all have to start somewhere, right? So grab whatever equipment you have, get started, you can always get fancy and upgrade later. So I want you to ask yourself, what is something that you do differently in your industry that you could teach other people to do and what is a framework that you always use in your business that maybe even other people do, but you're like, I don't do it that way. I do. Steps three, four and five before ever do steps one and two. And there's a reason why, right? Like maybe you have figured out a way to and I'm using, of course my own examples. But whenever I talk about my framework of start launching market, there is marketing concepts baked into the starting principles. And I do that on purpose. So when you get to marketing your podcast, it's so much easier. It is so much easier if you do these things in the start phase, but that's how I teach it because I don't want it to be this totally compartmentalised process for podcasting, I want you to have a fluid motion of creating your content and feeling confident behind marketing it. So that's what I do differently. I want you to ask yourself, What do I do differently in my industry, that I could sell a digital course around this cell this framework, even if it is kind of similar to someone else's I want you to ask yourself, How can I stand out? How can I be different and show up in a totally different way for my audience?

Where Have You Achieved Success?

And the last point that I want to share with you today, number four is where have you achieved success? Now, I have a list. And this is going to be really silly. And I haven't talked about this before, but I have days as everyone does, because we are all human. And this was especially true in the beginning whenever I was having like, imposter syndrome really seeping into me like Who do you think you are teaching podcasting? When you haven't even gotten a million downloads? You haven't even gotten 100,000 downloads like who are you to teach podcasting if you haven't achieved this level of success. And so what I did and I would recommend you do as well, I think I have a top 10 list of achievements, but I'll share with you, I'll share with you five of them.

My Top 5 Achievements

And that is, I have graduated college. That is a big achievement for myself. I was one of the first ones in my family to go to college and graduate in four years. And I never dropped a class. And it's funny because my parents, my mom always talks about that. She's like, I'm so proud of you. Like you never dropped a class. And I didn't really think it was that big of a deal until I start talking to other people. And they're like, Oh, my gosh, I dropped so many classes all the time. And I'm like, Yeah, I graduated in four years. I'm very proud of that. I have given birth to three children, which is a crazy feat in and of itself. I have held a an amazing job that I had for a long time that I really loved. This wasn't in the corporate world. This was actually when I was in college, and I got promoted several times in that position. I have completed a tough mudder. If you don't know what that is, it's like one of those extreme races. I did this in 2013. And I'm just like, Oh my gosh, I still can't believe I did it. I would never do it again. It's one of those things like I did it. Check the box. I'm good. I never want to do one of those again, I'm kind of over it now. But I did it and I completed it. I didn't quit. It took us forever. We did it as a team with the company that I worked for. And it was one of those extreme races where like you run through tough mudder like M-U-D-D-E-R, like you're literally tracking through the mud. I did it with my sister in law. There was one point where we had to scale this like 10 foot wall and we just had to boost each other up and we had to carry each other at one point we did. We ran through like the electrical shocks like it was crazy. we crawled under barbed wire, all these crazy things and I look back and I'm like, why did we want to do it again? But I completed it right that's That matters. I achieved that level of success because not everybody can say they completed one of those races. And then the fifth thing that I'll share with you is I started my online business, even though I was terrified. I really was. And I didn't have a reason to be terrified, right? Because it's not like I was starting a brick and mortar that I was investing, you know, 50 grand, and hoping that it was going to work out. I was just starting, like, I bought a website, like I invested probably around $1,000 to get started with my online business with my website, my domain, some of the behind the scenes things that I did to really get going. And I didn't invest a ton of money, but I started it, I made it happen. I filed for my LLC and I did everything to make my company legitimate. And I'm really proud of that. So those are some of my five achievements. I have many more. I've self published a book and like I've like all these other things that I'll maybe I'll share with you one day, but where have you achieved a certain level of success? Is it in your health and fitness? Is it in your own personal journey to success? Whatever that looks like, I want you to ask yourself, what kind of success have I achieved, that I could share with someone else? The pathway, the strategy, again, going back to processes and strategies, how could I turn that information, that framework that roadmap into profit? How could I create a profitable digital course out of this journey that I had?

Four Things Recap

And speaking of we talked about so the four things that you can teach him to run through those again real fast. So we talked about processes and strategies is number one. Number two was take your most downloaded episodes and consider turning that content into a course. The third one is what do you do differently than other people in your industry? The fourth one is where have you achieved success? And I want you to think about all of those things. And I want you like, this is the call to action for this episode.

Outro

But that's all I have for you today, guys, I want you to consider how you can turn your podcast into profit. And I know that I kept talking to people that have been podcasting for six months or more, but if you are in the very beginning stages of your podcast, I want you to start thinking about these things right now. So when you do get to the point where you feel confident in your podcast and you're like, man, I think I could take things to the next level in my business, I want you to consider creating a digital course. So wherever you are in your podcasting journey I really believe that attending Amy's free masterclass can really help you open your eyes to the things that are possible whenever you're creating consistent content and you're showing up on a regular basis for your audience how that can translate into a digital course.
