today's guest. So like I said, she's been on the podcast before. April Bradford, she has talked about launching a podcast in 30 days, she talks about her journey. And I am so incredibly excited to bring her on the show again today to talk about some of the things that she's gone through in her journey in the year of COVID, and a pandemic, and all the other things, and what she's done with her podcast because she has a brand new one, and just all kinds of fun stuff.
So I won't spoil it like spoiler alert, but a little bit about April. So she is an online course consultant for digital courses. She helps women who are just starting out on their online course journey, build and market their course. And we're going to talk about that here in a little bit. So she's passionate about making online course creation simple and not overwhelming. And I just I can't
wait like she's so much fun. We had a great conversation, that I think you're really going to appreciate the behind the scenes strategies that she shares with us today. So here's my conversation with April.
All right, Proffitt Podcast listeners, I m so excited to have a retu n guest on the show. Welcome bac , Apri
Thank you. Thank you for having me back. I'm super excited to be here.
Yeah. So this is so fun. And actually, I didn't actually look at the date of our last episode. But I want to say it was around this time last year that we had our first meeting as far as interviews and just being on the podcast, and you are launching your podcast you launched in 30 days, April is actually a student of Proffi t Podcasting. And now you' e coming on the show today to ta k about wha
So I just like Krystal was saying I had a podcast. And now I am rebrandi g my podcast so we can talk abo t the journey of what it was li e to what it's been like o rebrand and why and all th t stuff.
yeah, so first, tell us what is the name of your new podcast?
Okay, so the new podcast is a Little Miss Course reneur.
Okay, and tell us why. Like, go back to like, the very first moment that you thought I think I need to rebrand or I think I need to change things up. did things just kind of get stale? Like kind of walk us through that process of how you got to, you needed to rebrand or you wanted to?
Yes. Okay, so my podcast was the chorus graders classroom. And I started that, because I was a teacher before this, and really loved like, creating curriculum, all that stuff. And so helping course graders create engaging, good content for their courses. That's what I started my podcast about. And so it was just me, I was a solo podcast. And that's really all I talked about was like, strategies to creating a course. Well, you can talk about
that for so many episodes. And then also, I started realizing, okay, so I was I work with one on one clients, and I was helping them just create the content, like, I wasn't doing any marketing, or launching or anything like that just content. And a lot of them were, you know, launching, and their courses weren't selling like they weren't selling like they had hoped, which is I think, more, um, happens more often
than people say, right. And so I started diving in it was about a year ago, actually, that I started diving into marketing and funnels and like, how can I help course creators, not just create good courses, but actually get them launched, right, get marketed and launched and build their lists, because all of that is part of having a
successful course. And so it was July of this year, I stopped recording any more podcasts like as like, Okay, I'm going to take a break and take a step back for a minute and start to pivot because I myself am getting certified as a triple threat marker, which is like offer copy
design. Um, and so I'm like, I have a whole new set of skills now that my audience needs and so I want I the whole reason to rebrand was to expand my topic and be able to talk about all those things, marketing strategy, you know, launching course creation still, but every Everything that goes into creating a successful course, and course launch and being able to bring on, like guests, because when you're talking about course creation strategies, there's not that many people who are like
instructional designers. And so to bring someone on, it was like, hard to, like, I didn't know how to incorporate that. So I just really wanted to open it up wider to more topics, so I could bring more people on.
Okay, that's awesome. And I love that, you know, April, and I were kind of talking earlier how, instead of, you know, being very broad and going super nice, you are actually really nice. And you decided you needed to broaden it a little bit to kind of expand your market and like you said, your clientele, maybe the people that you're working with, or the people that you're just attracting into your market. So I really wanted to hone in on
that point. So for anybody that's listening, that's like, I just don't know if my topics really working, then take that into consideration. And I think that that's a great tip is to look at, well, how can you diversify your podcasts because now I mean, you could talk to a copywriter, you could talk to someone that does funnels, email marketing, like affiliate marketing, like you could talk to so many different kinds of
people. So I like that you're doing that because it definitely is going to open up so many doors for you. And I'm so excited about this new podcast. But I wanted to add in a little side note, because April really is like the Jill of all trades. And she actually designed the potty report logo, I always give me a shout out when I can like, we had so much fun designing that logo and I thought oh my gosh, she's gonna think I'm
insane. Because I actually told her I was like, Okay, I just want something to do with potty and like all the things and what you did on is the best thing ever. I still it makes you smile every time I see it. So thank you so much for doing that.
That was a fun project. That was super fun. Oh my gosh, we design projects that I've ever put a toilet in. So
yes, I love it. So watch it. It's funny because people are like, Wait, is that really like? Yes, it's a chick sitting on a toilet looking at her phone, like that's exactly what it is. So if you've listened to the potty report, and you've never taken a good look at the logo, you need to go check it out. Because it's it's worth it. It's worth looking at. Yeah. Okay, but Okay, let's get back to your audience. So is your audience
shifting? Like, do you think that there's probably people that are already in your network in your circle right now, like art? Do you have this fear of like, what if those people leave? What if they say, Oh, she's going too broad, or she's doing this? Like what? Tell me about the ideas that you've had about your audience and going to a different podcast angle?
That is a good question. Okay. So as far as like content goes, it's definitely still relatable to everyone that was previously listening to the podcast, right? But the new podcast is Little Miss course printer. And so really honing in on women, and specifically, moms, who, you know, either here's here was my experience was, I was a mom who was dropping my son off at daycare, and I was crying all the way to work, right. And so I just wanted to be a stay at home
mom. And then 12 years later, I'm finally a stay at home mom with a three year old now. And being a stay at home mom is hard. Like, it's not all that it's cracked up to be some days. And I needed something else. Like, I knew I needed to work. And so um, it's for those moms that either want to quit their job. And they know that there's like this online course world that they want to dive into. Or it's for those stay at home moms that are like, I need an out, you know, I need that creative
break. And so how can they get started online. And so I haven't focused like I wasn't focused on that before, it was really just people who wanted to create an online course. And I do have male listeners in my audience. So sometimes, I worry a little bit about that is like I'm gonna lose them. Because I'm very not like I cut the fluff and give, like the info, which I think attracts the male personality a little more, you know? And so, yeah, it'll be interesting to
see what happens there. But I'm excited to be able to hone in on just the female but also brighten like I'm honing in and broadening at the same time.
Well, that's that was exactly what I was about to say. It's like, okay, so you, you know, you're broadening your topic, but you're getting more specific with your audience. And I think that that has the potential to really explode what you're
doing. Doing because you're gonna all of a sudden have like, oh, April doesn't just offer course creation and strategy, it's now she's my go to person to help me build my funnel to sell my course and to show me how to use you know, whether it's social media or another type of marketing approach to really hone in, but it's also getting laser focused on exactly who you want to talk to. And I think that I'm excited for you. I think that this is gonna be so
cool. So much fun. Oh, my gosh, but we're sitting here, you know, we're talking about all the fun things, although rainbows and sunshine and all that, but I want to ask what's been the hardest part of coming to this decision of rebranding? Like, did you have this idea at any point that was like, I'm just gonna stop podcasting altogether?
Oh, gosh. So yeah, like, so when I quit in July quit, you know, recording the episodes. It was like, I knew that I didn't want to like, stop because I really enjoy podcasting, but I knew something had to change. Um, but then also, I still like question because I haven't. Well, this is airing about the time that everything's coming out. So I still question like, is this the best choice? Should I be doing this? Like, I already have listeners on this podcast, and I just keep going, you know, like,
they're liking it. And they're listening, you know, like, I have my loyal followers. And so yeah, there's definitely that doubt of, is this what I should be doing? Is this the correct choice? Um, but there's also that excitement of Okay, this is, I feel like it's right. But you know, it's just that scary taking that first step to like, actually do it, that can be scary.
So that excitement is kind of outweighing the nervousness. It's like, the nerves are still there, right? But it's like, but you're so excited that it kind of muffles out that voice that's like, this is a wrong decision. Or maybe you shouldn't do it this way, or this and that. And it's like, no, we're so excited to do this. And this path feels right that that other voices kind of quieten down a little bit, would you agree?
Yes. And, and part of my whole experience is like Little Miss course printer is that as a course printer, you test things. You try it. And if it doesn't work, you shift, right? You look at the data, you go, Okay, this is working, I'm gonna keep doing this, this isn't working. So I'm gonna try something new. And that like, being in the online course world, and on online entrepreneur, like, you know, like, you look at things and you try things, and you're like, wow, that didn't go as planned.
So you can either give up, or you shift, and you keep going. And that's where, you know, that mindset of like, okay, like, this is scary. And I'm gonna just try it. And if it doesn't work out, then I can try something else. Like, really, it's just like, my husband won't be like, What are you so worried about? Why are you so nervous? And I'm like, I don't know. Like, it's not like I have some boss who's gonna fire me, I'm my
own boss. So if it doesn't work out, I can, I can start over like, nothing's so you know, like, I can't even think of the word but like, it's not like the end of the world. If this doesn't work out, like I can shift and move in a different direction. So Well,
I think that you just gave everybody listening, a huge gift with that, because we all like to hear about the huge successes and when everything has gone to plan and all the things but I like to really talk about the emotional side of it. Because those are often the things that we either keep to ourselves, or like you said, like we tell our spouses, we tell our best friend, like somebody like that, but we don't tell the world
that. And I want us to really create communities that talk about those things and letting other podcasters know, like, Hey, here's April, she's been doing this for a year already. And she's trying something new. And it's a little scary. I've done things like when I've tried something new, and it's a little terrifying, because I'm like, What if this doesn't work? Like what if this is a total failure?
I'm kind of doing this publicly, and it's a little scary, but I think what you said earlier is like, you know, you have this excitement, you have this nervousness, but being more excited about it is just that voice, it's a little bit louder.
And I think that that's what helps you just push through it and say, I'm just gonna do it and what a gift that you're giving to your audience by going ahead of them and saying, I'm going to pivot I'm going to shift I'm going to try these new things because this is what we do. Like You know, Hi, I'm April, and I am going to try these things out before you do. And I'm going to tell you the things that you should do, and you shouldn't do. Like, my whole journey, that's what I've been doing.
Yep. Yeah, that's exactly right. Like, you know, as, when you're leading your tribe, like you lead your podcasters. You know, you've led me how to podcast. It's like, you do have to try things. Because if you don't do it, you know, like, you can't lead them without you trying it first. And show. Yeah, like, you just have to step out there. And, and, and that hope of, instead of like, what if it doesn't work out?
Well, what if it does? You know, like, that's where it's like, when you start thinking, well, what if it doesn't work out? Why am I doing this? You know, well, well, what if it does? What does that future look like? And when you start to focus on that, that's when the excitement takes over the fear.
Oh, that's so good. That was like that was the quotable for this episode. Like right there. We'll pull that out. Because it was so good. And it's so smart. I think it is just that slight shift in mindset really makes all the
difference. But I want to talk about something because we've talked about this I actually, April, and I recorded one of her new episodes for her podcast right before we did this one, which you got to go listen to that one, because it was really good to go listen to her podcast to hear that one. But we talked about content. And like that is like one of the things that most new podcasters like once they get the technology and the software figured out. Content is the biggest struggle for them.
So how do you see your content creation changing? Do you see your format changing? Like tell us some of the things that you've thought about as you've rebranded your show, and maybe just taken a different approach to it?
Yes. Okay, so this is so good. Because right before we got on, I was actually mapping out my quarter for content for my podcasts. And so I have like five pillars of what it is to be a course printer. And that's strategy list building, audience building, offer creation, like offering course creation, and then
launching. And so I have set up, I actually have a spreadsheet that I set up that I have, like those different categories that I pick, you know, like a course topic, or not a course topic, a podcast topic that I can and then I can choose like, okay, which category does this go in of those, you know, five pillars, and I also throw in mindset, because that's huge when you're an entrepreneur. And so I can kind of see like, Okay, I'm touching on these different
things. And I have a mix of things, which is super helpful to have a mix of different topics, but they all relate to my one topic. So that's been helpful. Also, another thing is, I'm constantly like hanging out where my ideal podcast listener is. And I take note of the questions that I'm seeing being asked, like, I will literally screenshot questions. Like, I just have a Google Doc of like, screenshots of question.
This is so smart.
Yeah, cuz I'm like, because when you don't have an idea, like that's, sometimes the content comes from you know, and so if you don't have an audience already, and you don't have them asking you questions, that's one way that you can find questions that people are asking and build your content off of that.
Oh, this is so smart. And I love the idea of having pillars or having principles or like foundational ideas. That's like, Okay, this is what it whether it's your business, your podcasts, you know, a certain part of your business, like, however that looks for you. But I love it, because that at least gives you something to build off of, right? It's not like you're looking at a blank Google Doc with the cursor, like just blinking staring at you and you're like, What am I supposed
to talk about? Now you at least have five things that you can say, okay, I've talked about one, two and three several times, I need to throw in a little bit of four and really throw on some stories, or maybe have a guest Come on, like whatever that looks like, but you're not starting from, I have no idea what to talk about. And so does that make you feel more confident going into quarter four with this plan?
Definitely. Yes. And it was so much easier to map like so at first, I started with my planner just open you know, kind of like the blinking cursor and I'm like, oh, there's so many blank Wednesday through. But then once I was like, Okay, I'm gonna make a spreadsheet where I can see those topics, and start plugging things in with topics like that made it a lot easier. Really, like my mind started going, wait, I know like what I can plug in for this
topic? And you know, it was just easier to do it from that, then nothing? Definitely,
for sure. And so did you plan because I'm like, I'm such a visual person and how I plan things. So is your spreadsheet categorized by a month? Like, do you have like one month on each one? Or does it like the three months in the quarter? How are you doing that?
So it's very raw right now. But I just went through and I literally just did, okay, from the start of my launch day of my podcast, which is October 12, is to the end of the year, I just did that all on one spreadsheet, and then I put it, so then there's categories, the topic, the guest, you know, like my call to action, because
that's important. Like it and also when you're planning your content to plan, like, if you're launching something, you want your content to be around that call to action, you know, so having that in there, you know, just all those little things, to make sure that it's all coming together into one cohesive podcast. So...
Oh my gosh, like I could just have the biggest smile on my face. I'm so proud of you. This is so smart. And you just gave everybody listening. Like a few like hidden gems. One, you just got started with your content, you're like, Yeah, I just open up like, just got started, like, it's not fancy, I'll probably make it you know, it'll probably be different in three more months from now. But for now, I just had to get started with it.
And do you new strategically like looking ahead, that you need to plan for, whether it's a freebie or you want to grow your Facebook group or you want to, you know, promote your course that you're selling or a service that you're going to be providing. And I can't stress this enough that it does make you feel a lot more frazzled. If you're sitting down to record and you're like, Oh, wait, I forgot, I got to promote this thing. And then I got to shove in this audio clip real fast.
And I have to go back and re edit it like you will feel like a crazy person. But if you sit down and plan it out, like April just described, everything feels a lot easier. When you actually sit down to record you feel more confident, like you just feel like, I know what I'm doing. I know what I'm talking about.
Yes, yes. And so this is the teacher in me to like, so as a teacher, like I had my plan book, right. And I would sit down and I would have the whole week planned. And then I got to once I was a little more seasoned teacher, like I would have like, the whole month planned, you know, like not like, in depth. I knew what I was doing. And so I was like, you know, what, I know how to plan. So I need to do this with my content, because I did feel
better. Like if I was a teacher and I showed up on Monday morning, like I wouldn't, and I wasn't planned, I wouldn't sleep Sunday night because I was like, so nervous. And it's the same thing with your podcasts, like,
you have to be planned. And if you want to build a strategy around what you are doing and really make your podcast so it's, it's working for you, right you want the reason How can we create this content is so it works for us, is you have to have that strategy plan and you have to know like, anytime you put out content, what is the purpose of this content? Is it just to educate and really, you know, like, give them you know, knowledge and all that or is it that you have a launch coming
up? And so you are building your podcast topics based on because you know that you're launching soon. So you want to get your listeners in the mindset of like, Oh, yeah, like I'm ready to you know, take the next step with her because this content she's giving is amazing. So when you have that plan like you can build in strategy, which makes all the difference in the world
my drug oh my gosh, like all that I was like man, I wish so my mics attached to a boom arm. I'm like, I wish I could drop on microphone right now. That was so good. That was like a masterclass in strategy.
It's so smart. I agree. 100% I think that if you zoom out and really look at your content and make every single episode, every single piece of content, have a purpose instead of just I'm going to talk about something today, you know, just maybe something that's on brand, if you take the time to plan and actually have that strategy behind it. Man like April said, put put the content to work for
you. So it's a lot easier when you actually do offer something to your audience and you give them an opportunity to work with you or to buy your product or whatever that looks like. And I'm just yeah, I'm I'm super impressed. That was just that was I'm gonna go back and listen to that again, because that was so good. So good. I love this so much.
Well, that was like, so when I started podcasting, like I had worked one on one with clients, you know, but I hadn't like dove into like really building an online business and funneling, and all that stuff. And then I'm like, oh, like...when you put strategy behind things, and you plan things. And you know, like, this is why I'm creating this. And even if you have a freebie, like you want to be, you know, like, putting that stuff out there and how, like, when you have a strategy, that's when
things can grow. But when you're just like, oh, I've got to record a podcast today. Like, I had my podcast topics, like planned, and I knew what I was doing. But there was no like, like, really, it was like, I'm just gonna put content out there, because that's what I was told I was supposed to do, right? Like you create content, put it out there, and kind of like, you build it, and they will come. Like, that's what I have, you know, like, yes, it can be the best content in the
world. But when you're not asking your audience to take that next step, they don't know how to take the next step, right. So when we build our content, based on the strategy, we know what steps we're going to ask them to take, they can take those steps.
Oh, so good. So good. Oh, my gosh, like, I feel like April, and I could just talk forever. And so I'm not gonna I'm not gonna make you listen to all of our conversations, because we actually already talked for about 3045 minutes before this one, but I do want to wrap this up with. Okay, now that you've been podcasting for a while, and you are rebranding, you're on a brand new part, like a new chapter of your journey. Looking back over the last year, what would you say is the number one
thing that you've learned? And the biggest mistake that you've made to? So it's a two part question.
Yes. Okay. So the thing, definitely, strategy is what I've learned, like, and that's probably the biggest mistake, too, is like not having, like, I would randomly throw things out there, you know, like, I'm like, oh, gosh, if people go back and listen, they're probably like, What is she doing? But I was trying to figure out my own customers journey as well, you know, and so that is definitely what I've learned is like, have that content planned, have strategy planned into it? So it's working
for you? And, yes, when people listen, they have a place to go. So if you build it, they can come. Because when they know where to go, it's like, people would listen to my podcast, you know, and like, I had people reach out to me, and they're like, yeah, I created my course for your podcast and all that.
And I'm like, wow, like, I don't even know, like, anything about you really, because, you know, there was no like, connection between my podcast and like, my business, kind of, you know, so creating that connection would be my biggest mistake that I didn't do.
That's awesome. No, thank you so much for sharing that because there's a lot of people listening that are in creation mode, or they're in launch mode. And actually, that's where I want to pivot into, you know, we've done our rapid fire questions with you before. And so I'm not gonna ask you the same ones. But I, since you're in the season of launching, like, I know, your podcast will already be out there by the time this episode
airs. But I want to know, like, the original rapid fire is what advice would you give to a brand new podcaster? But I want to go even more specific and say, What advice would you give to someone that's launching a brand new podcast?
Okay, that is? So launching a brand new podcast? Well, first of all, do they have an audience or no audience?
This is someone listening to this show, that is like, I they have followed the path. Hopefully, they have built up a little bit of momentum, and they're ready to put it out there.
Okay, so, you know, Christmas, the excitement of building up to Christmas, right? Like, it's so super exciting. Like, you just can't wait, and then, like, it's the excitement, that's the build up to it. Right? That makes it so super exciting. Because let's be honest, Christmas Day is not that exciting. What's the like, Ah, that was great, whatever, you know, but it's that build
up. So building up having a build up to your launch, like, announce it, don't be afraid to say like, I think one place that a lot of us get scared is it's like, oh, well, what if my friends on Facebook, see that? I'm doing this, you know, and it's like, Who cares? Like you are doing something bigger than them. You know, like, don't let that hold you back and announce it and announce it to the world. Like let them know, because they can't grow if you don't say anything.
Oh, that's so good. Oh, my gosh, yeah, that's a totally agree. 100%. That's so awesome. Okay, my next question is, what would be your dream podcasts to be on? And I think I asked you this before, but I want to see if it's different. And who would be your dream podcast guest for your new podcast?
Ah, that is a good question. Hmm, that's a good question. Um, gosh, I'm really into the Hirsch marketing podcast right now. However, she doesn't have guests, but she's all about like, creating, she's Facebook ads. And so I would love to have her on just to talk about like, strategy and you know, building your business online. If I could be on a podcast, I know, last time I said, Amy Porterfield. And we're kind of in the same niche. But I still think it would be fun, because we were definitely
different still. And I think we both bring a lot to the course creation table. And so I think it would still be fun to be on her podcast.
Oh, that's so good. That's so good. Okay, and then my last question, and I know I've asked you this before is Do you consider yourself a perfectionist? But here's the twist. Here's the twist. Okay. If you had to let go of one perfectionist tendency, tendency, because I felt like everybody has one. Where would it be in your business?
Hmm, good question. So, um, I do consider myself a perfectionist in certain things. I'm very detail oriented. And that slows me down, like, so when I'm creating a funnel, like, all of my design has to be perfect. And you know, all that stuff. And so it's like, that funnel could have been out the door, you know, two weeks ago. And here I am
creating all of the graphs. And so, I know that that's where I need to, like scale back that perfectionism, because I always tell myself this progress over perfectionism, because being perfect people are going to buy whether it's perfect or not, right? That b minus work. Have you heard the B minus work? Well, yes, I'm like, okay, b minus work sells. So it's okay, if it's not perfect.
Oh, my gosh. Well, thank you so much for sharing that because I it's funny, because I was like, I think that that's Episode 217 of the online marketing podcast like that is one of my favorite episodes of Brooke Castillo and Amy Porterfield talking about b minus work, and it's like, it's okay. Like it is okay to put it out there. And, y'all, if we just all tried to get a plus plus work all the time, we'd never see anything.
diverse. Nothing. And nothing I found too is like when we, when we think we're being perfectionist, right? We're really just holding ourselves back. Because we're scared. You know, it's like, oh, yeah, this isn't ready yet. And it's like, no, you're procrastinating doing it. And you're hiding behind perfection. And it's really just procrastination in a costume. So
100% Oh, my gosh, April, this was so good. Like I said, I feel like we could just talk about all things podcasting course creation, strategy, all the things. But where can everybody find you? And tell us again? What is the name of your podcast?
