But I hate the sound of my voice. Those are usually the first words new podcasters Tell me, their confidence is shaken. They think they don't have what it takes their mind has misled them to believe they should be amazing. The first time they sit down in front of the mic, you the height, you're supposed to be good right out of the gate. Oh, no, we're all terrible in the beginning. And guess what, you can't change the sound of your voice. So let's fill it
with confidence. instead. This book is meant to educate, inspire and encourage you. I don't have some fancy degree in podcasting, magic. I can't make you sound like you're in a million dollar studio, when you're really recording in your closet surrounded by piles of laundry. But I can teach you how to create content your audience craves, every week, I can teach you how to sit at your mic with your head held high. Because you know you're talking to the exact
person you want to reach. you're delivering valuable content, and you're not agonizing over all the stupid editing, can we stop losing sleep over the editing? I'm not saying podcasting is easy. It takes a lot of work, planning, learning from mistakes, being vulnerable and trying to improve every day. But with the things I'll teach you in this book, at least we'll have a lot of fun every step of the way. So let's get started.

Okay, so I just finished wrapping up doing something different. And usually when we do something for like the first time, we're not always really excited about sharing how it went. Maybe it went a little bit differently than you expected. Maybe it was just a totally different experience all the things right? Well, I just finished recording the audio book for start a binge worthy podcast, which comes out on October 20, 2020. I'm really excited to have this book out
into the world. But I bring this up about how long it took me. Or that's really what I want to talk about today is how long it took me to do it versus how long I thought it was going to take me because time is one of the important things we're going to talk about today. And so when I sat down to start recording this audio book, I'm like, I got this like I talk for a living, right? This is my jam, being able to talk and share my thoughts and
all the things. Uh, no, I was real fast, taken aback and put in my place because recording an audio book, totally not the same as recording a podcast where I can pivot and go in a different direction and share a story that I thought of on the spot with an audiobook. You got to read what you're looking at. It took me way longer than I thought. And there were words in the book that I'm like, I'm like cussing
at myself. Like why did you put that there was much simpler words that we can all pronounce and understand better that you could have used so you know what lessons learned. But the reason why I bring it up is because it took me way longer than I thought it was going to take but it's done. It is done. As of me recording this. I no longer like I handed it off to the editor. She is working her magical wizard powers and I'm so happy
that I've completed it. I mean, who knows she might come back and be like, Oh, you need to change some things. But as of me like we're done, we're done. And I'm excited because it gives me the opportunity to one talk about it and tell you I'm still doing and trying new things even though I've been doing this for a while. But two I want to talk about the time allowance that you have in your day in your life but also with your podcast.
Host This is actually a really fun conversation I've had with several podcasters that I want to get into today. So let's get right to it. Welcome to the Proffitt Podcast where we teach entrepreneurs how to start launch and market their podcast. I'm your host, Krystal, Proffitt, and I'm so excited that you're here. Thanks for hanging out with me today. Because if you've been trying to figure out the world of podcasting, think of this show as the time saving shortcut
you've been looking for. So let's get right to it, shall we?
So like I said, we're talking about time allowance, and what that means for you and your podcast. Now, I could go and do four hours worth of a podcast just on time management alone, which sounds really counterintuitive. But like at its core, I want to make sure that you are budgeting your time, not only for your podcast, but also your podcast listeners. So we're going to get into a few
things today. But we're really focusing on how to use your time with your hosting platform very smartly with how you want your actual show format to go with your podcast. So if you have not listened to that episode, I'll link to in the show notes. I have an episode all about podcast show format, and how you can decide how long your episodes should be so Krystal roffitt.com/Episode 195. And I' a link to the episode about odcast show format. So you ca decide how long does my episod
really need to be. But in buz sprout, that is the platfo m y'all know, I love that we're oing to talk about today. So if ou have a different hostin platform, I cannot speak to eac one individually, I'm going o talk about buzzsprout. So you take all the things I'm talkin about today and apply them i whatever way they work for yo .
So I wanted to break it down to the basics. So when you join buzzsprout, whether you are on their free plan, like you're just in your 90 day trial, or you are like you've been with them for a while, then you know that there is a time constraint around plans. So if you have a free plan, you're on there for free, but you only get a set amount of hours to upload before you get charged or before you're no longer eligible for their free plan, like you went over
the amount of time allotted. So I wanted to just lay that basically, very just plainly out because I wanted us to all be on the same page. So other hosting providers. I don't know if they go by time if they give you unlimited amount of time, but with buzzsprout they do have an unlimited plan, where you don't have to worry about time and then you're like Krystal, I'm just gonna stop this podcast now. I mean, I'm on the unlimited plan. I never had to worry about like, unlimited
nights and weekends. Totally friends reference, if you know, you know where they're talking about. Oh my gosh, what the? What is the actor's name? Oh, I'm gonna have to look it up. What is his name? I'm thinking Jurassic Park. Just like the guy from the Jurassic Park must go faster must go faster. And he guested on Friends. And Joey's like, I love you in those commercials, unlimited nights and weekends. Oh my gosh, I just totally geeked out all my friends fans, you get it? You
know, you laugh with me. The rest of you are just like, you're a little cuckoo today Krystal and that's okay. I am I'll admit it. I'm a little Cuckoo. And that's fine. Okay, I hope you enjoy this anyway. But if you're not on an unlimited plan, then there's a good chance you're on a budget a budget, right? I hope everybody's on the same page with me about what a budget is. But it means that you only have a certain amount of either time, money capacity and your brain.
Like we all have different kinds of budgets. And when it comes to buzzsprout you probably have a monetary budget. You're like, I don't want to spend $500 on my podcast every month, which for the record, none of their plans are $500 but you're looking at it and you're like okay, I can afford $12 a month or I can for afford the $24 a month plan that
works within my budget. But you also look at the time allotment and you say okay, if I publish four episodes per month, and each one of them are 20 minutes, then that is 80 minutes of podcasting that I'm going to do. Where does that time show up in the different options that buzzsprout offers? And the reason why this is important because we're going to talk about what to do with extra time, whenever you have it in
your podcast. So I'm going to assume that everybody here has chosen a plan, whether you're on the free plan, you're on a different plan, whatever that plan looks like for you. Now, imagine you get to the end of the month. Why, right? Whenever the next billing, like buzzsprout will tell you, you have 27 minutes left in the month of October. And then you say, Well, what do I do with this? Like, this is brand new information? What do I do with
this extra 27 minutes? Okay, I've had multiple conversations. It's really funny. So shout out, I'm talking about my mom, shout out the edible gardens podcast, because she's asked me before she's like, Okay, I'm on this plan. And I have 27 minutes left. What do I do with that information? And I say, well, you have a few options. First, you don't have to do anything with it, you just you know, but she's like, no, no. And it's funny, because we're totally
those type of people. Like, if you pay for something, we're going to use every single little bit out of it, like down to the second, we're going to use all the time that we paid for in that month. I'm totally my mother's daughter in this respect, like yes, like, okay, let's figure out how to use this allowance. So you can one ignore
it. And just don't even worry about it, you're like, Okay, well, I just, you know, I lost out on a little bit of time for the month, and then you can adjust, like, maybe you need to go down in your plan, because you have too much time. Or maybe you're can get creative and figure out ways to use it. And that's what we're gonna talk about. That's what I'm really excited about today.
So, options, what options do you have, if you had an extra 27 minutes for the month of October? Well, the first option is you could record a Facebook Live, and then download that audio and then throw it in as a bonus episode all about some bonus episodes. So you could do the Facebook Live, whether it's in stream yard, or on your phone, or wherever you do Facebook Lives, or even Instagram lives. If you can get the audio from an Instagram Live or YouTube Live wherever you
want to go live. And you can teach on something you can talk about something important to you. But the whole point of it is it's like this bonus piece of content that you hadn't planned on doing anyway. So get creative with it, try something new, and record audio. And then you can download that and have that to use as your extra time allotment. Does that make sense? I hope I feel like I'm using bigger words probably because I just said a lot. Man. That's
really not a big word. Anyway, allowance a lot, man, I think that's I'm confusing myself here. So these are my own issues. These are the days of our lives, okay, I just all the friends references are coming out of me today. So I'm just I'm gonna apologize for it. I'm just telling you, there might be more around the corner. I cannot help it today. So that's the first one record a Facebook Live and then throw it in as a bonus...
you could do an extra interview. That's option number two for bonuses. So let's say you call a friend up like a colleague, someone that's not like, Oh, this high profile guests. But I have several people that are in my industry that I say industry. They're not even like in podcasting, but they are very similar in what they do. They teach on how to be a better public speaker. They teach marketing, they teach how to be
awesome at Facebook Lives. They teach personal styling, personal branding, I could call them and be like, hey, do you want to hop on like a quick call with me real fast, I just really want to do this bonus interview, like super casual, I'm gonna ask you five things, or we can just chat about what's going on with you. Like let's do a promotion for your business, whatever. But you have a bonus interview. I think that that is something really cool to kind of keep your
audience on their toes. We didn't even talk about the perks of all these little bonuses that you can do. But it's a fun option that you have if you have extra time in your monthly allowance.
And then the third one is a promo episode. So if you're looking at your content calendar, and you're like, Okay, I did my four episodes for the month. I still have this extra we're pretending right you have 27 minutes, and you're like what do I do with this 27 minutes. You can say okay, I have a big workshop coming up in November or at the end of the year. You could go into details. About this is the workshop I have coming up. Here's how I created it. Here's who it's for, here's all the
detailed information. Or you could do an interview with the previous student who has taken that workshop and say, Hey, tell me about what you thought like, did you? What kind of results Did you have after the workshop? What was your number one takeaway, so get creative with it like that is the whole point of this. But we've talked about these bonuses, what's the most important thing you have to remember, you have 27 minutes, that's the whole point of this,
right? You don't want to go into like this one piece of content that ends up being an hour long interview, you want to keep it short, you want to keep it within that 27 minutes that you already paid for, we're not trying to make you tack on extra dollars every time we are just saying, What can I do in 27 minutes? So that is your goal.
Sit down and tell them if you're going to interview someone or bring someone else into the mix, say, look, this is how much time we have, we're not going over this, this is exactly what we're doing 27 minutes, actually, we're gonna count it, we're gonna go to 2025, likeno longer than that, because I want to stay within this allotment that I have.
So the other option that you have, if you're like, I don't want to do a bonus episode is going into your last episode that you're going to do, then make it a little bit longer than you normally would like, if you have seen repeatedly, like let's say two months in a row, you have this extra amount of time, that's around 25 minutes. And you're like, well, that's kind of short, you know, let's say your other episodes are normally
45 minutes long. So instead of adding additional content, what you could do is just make your regular episodes a little bit longer, right, you're given a little bit more freedom to tell an extra story, or add in a testimonial from another student or client that you worked with in the past. Now, I want to be very clear, this doesn't just give you full range to talk about whatever you want and get off topic and just share, you know, air dirty laundry on the podcast. We don't do that
anyway, right? We're not we're not all about that life at all. But I just want to really reiterate that we're not getting off topic, but you do have the opportunity to share a little bit more, if that's what you
choose to do. But I have a feeling most of you are going to go the route of adding in an extra shorter episode, because that is easier, I'm just gonna be real honest, it's really easy to add in a short, quick 1520 minute episode than it is to drag out an existing episode to 1520 more minutes without adding fluff and other details that people may or may not really be into. So those are your options.
And then the question is, so when do you publish this content? Right? So if you have 27 minutes, let's say you get a notification, you're looking in your buzzsprout account, and you're like, Okay, I have four days until the end of the month. When do I publish this extra bonus episode, this bonus piece of content? Well, the whole point of it is to use it before that time goes away and expires.
Because if you're listening to this and you haven't published a podcast episode, then just know that your time that you have for your podcast doesn't roll over, every single month, you have a set time for that month you pay for it, and then it goes away, whether you use it or not. So I want to make sure that you are utilizing all the time that you've paid for.
So when should you publish this bonus piece of content or the longer episode it's going to be before your monthly allowance expires. And I want you to schedule and plan it out just like any other piece of content, you're going to look at your schedule. And this doesn't have to be a whole, like sit down have to have a strategy session about what I'm going to do with this extra 27 minutes. It doesn't have to be all that you can simply sit down and say, Okay, I normally publish my
regular episodes on Tuesday. So if I wanted to publish this, let's say your time expires on a Saturday, right? When when I put in an extra episode. Well, this goes back to understanding your audience and when would they be most likely to listen? If you have a podcast focused around business entrepreneurs or anything like that, it's likely that they're listening to podcasts either early in the morning before they get started, maybe while they're working out.
Like I want you to know and understand a little bit about your audience. But if you publish on a Tuesday regularly, then maybe publish this bonus episode on a Thursday or Friday, because it gives it a little buffer of not just a publish on Tuesday. Oh, I got to publish on Wednesday like right afterwards. Because it's kind of, you know, who knows? I'm saying all this and I'm thinking, I don't know, maybe you try that, and it works
great for you. But if it were me and I had extra time, I would space it out just a little bit. Only because most of you aren't doing daily podcast every day anyway. So it may throw your audience like, Whoa, what is this? What's this episode? I don't know. Maybe there'll be super excited about it. This is where I love the idea of experimenting and trying new things. And then next month, if you have extra time, you can say you know what, that worked
really well. When I published it right after my other episode. Maybe I'll try that again. Or maybe you're like, nobody listened to that episode, or people were like, Don't ever talk to me two days in a row. I'm just kidding. No one's ever said that to me. If they did, then I'm sorry. They left. I mean, I'm just unsubscribe by. I'll see you later.
But um, that's all I have for you today. Guys. I know this has just been a kooky episode. That's another friend's reference. By the way, if you don't what episode is that? Hang on. You're feeling a little kooky? Oh, it's when they were messing with Monica. About not paying her bills on time. Oh, yeah. And leaving her shoes like out in the, in the launch in the laundry room in the living room. I'm telling you. How just okay, here's, here's the real thing.
Okay. We have HBO max. I stopped watching friends went off Netflix. Then we found out we got some trial of HBO max through something. And I've been watching friends again. And it's starting to show it's starting to come back to me and it is just weaving its way back into this podcast. So I'm sorry, I guess no, I'm not gonna apologize. Because you know what, it just gets me really excited when I make friends references. But what's even better is when people get them. Okay, so Oh my gosh, all the
things we've talked about. So KrystalProffitt.com/Episode195, for today's show notes, but I'm gonna do a quick recap.
So we're talking about what to do with the extra monthly allowance you have in your buzzsprout account, what are your options, you can do bonus episodes, which could be one, recording a Facebook Live, and then throw that in your podcast as a bonus to, you could do an extra interview. And it doesn't have to be like this long thought out thing like ask one of your friends, your colleagues, one of your students, anybody like that to say, Hey, come on, come have a
chat with me on the podcast. Or three, it could be a promotional episode that you put out there and say, Hey, we have a workshop coming up my courses opening soon, whatever you want it to be. But I highly recommend you using that time to get in front of your audience one more time before the month is over. Or you have the option of making that last episode of the month, a little bit longer to allow for you to use the rest of that allowance that you have. So and then the last thing we talked
about is when to publish this. I know I said I would give it a little buffer. But let's be honest, I want you to experiment. I don't want to just tell y'all like this is the rule. This is the rigid way we have to do it this like my way or the highway. I don't do that. Because when people tell me that I'm like, by No, I just I don't respond well to that. So I'm going to encourage you to experiment, explore new ideas, look at ways that you can do
things differently. And that's another way to keep things fresh with your podcast. So you get excited about it every single week. And that is our goal. I want you to be excited about podcasting about getting to know your audience, and connecting with them on a deeper level. But that's all I have for you today. Guys. This was just so silly. So quirky, but you know, Hey, it's me. If you're brand new round here, then I just hope that you
come back. I hope that you come back I hope you're a fan of friends because apparently they're here to stay and they're gonna weave themselves back into our regularly scheduled programming, but go to KrystalProffitt.com/Episode195.
