Let me tell you, I haven't had a nervous worry about losing my voice in a while. But we are right in the middle of the five day podcast challenge. And I literally said to my mom, I talked to her pretty often on the phone. I talked to her after day one and said, I don't know how to tone it down. Like I don't know how to just show
up on a live stream at 50%. And not go all out like full blown energy, like, like high energetic, all the things I don't know how to show up and just be 50% and save my voice for the whole week. I may not have a voice by the end of this week. And that's why I was like, Oh, wait, I have to record this before that happens. So I make sure that another podcast goes out this week. But I wanted to share with you a little behind the scenes of what's going on in our five day podcast
challenge. So let me do our little intro, and then I'm going to explain exactly what all that is. So let's get right to it. Welcome to the Proffitt Podcast where we teach entrepreneurs how to start launch and market their podcast. I'm your host, Krystal, Proffitt, and I'm so excited that you're here. Thanks for hanging out with me today. Because if you've been trying to figure out the world of podcasting, think of this show as the
time saving shortcut you've been looking for. So let's get right to it, shall we?
Okay, so I hit a point in doing the introduction, where I was like, wait, should I just go ahead and explain it? And then I'm like, No, hang on, we got to play the theme music, and then we'll come back. So we're back. And I want to explain real fast what the five day podcast challenge if you're in it, awesome. I hope you're having a blast. But I created the five day podcast challenge to be something that really just gets more people starting their podcasts, getting their podcast
questions answered, and launching their show. So I'm just going to run through the different five days. And then I'm actually going to share with you some clips from the trainings that we had on day one and day two. So day one was all about setting your podcast goal, what are some of the things that you need to consider whenever you're creating your podcast and having this goal in mind is going to help you have a solid foundation for your show. The next day, too, was all about how to
pick your podcast topic. Day Three is naming your podcast. day four is the common mistakes most new podcasters make. And then on day five, we're touching on how to launch a podcast and actually get it out into the world. So I did this challenge. Because I've wanted to do it like just very plain and simple. I've been a part of challenges that have been a lot of fun. And I thought I just want to do that one day. So it's on my bucket list of things to do for our audience.
So I'm really excited to be doing it. But like I said, I wanted to share some of the behind the scenes of the big takeaways that people have had on day one and day two. And if you're listening to this in real time, and the challenge is still happening, then I encourage you to come join us. It's not too late. We have replays of everything. And we're having a lot of fun. I'm just going to be really honest. We're having a lot of fun over there. So you can go to
KrystalProffitt.com/challenge to join us. But here is a little behind the scenes from the five day podcast challenge.
We're gonna have a freaking blast this week, like so much fun. I have been in planning mode for this challenge since 2020. I know that sounds like a big stretch. But I have been wanting to do something like this where it's not really a workshop. But it's not like something where we can just sit and like, just do all of this in 20 minutes and say here, good luck, like
See you later. The point of the challenge this week, and for you showing up here every day is to get those quick wins that help you like jumpstart your podcasts. There's a lot of you the intake questions to get into the group or what's the number one thing you want to get from this challenge and a lot of you said, I want to have a better understanding of podcasting. I want to pick my topic I want to decide on a name. I just want
to get my show going. I've been talking about this forever, like I have read every single one of your responses. And I'm just really excited for more people to podcast so if you have questions At any time, put a queue in front of them. I have a little. Let me see. So we're gonna have this later on to where we're gonna have a q&a at the end. Don't worry, do not worry. That is a part of why we were here is to get your specific podcast questions answered. But if at any time you do have
a question, put a queue in front of it. As you can see, there's already lots of comments happening. I don't want to lose your important question. Even while I'm presenting. I'm planning to do about 30-45 minutes of teaching and then have 15 to 20 minutes at the end for some rapid fire q&a, if we have a ton of questions or to go really deep, if there aren't as many but y'all I'm so excited. So this is gonna be so much fun, so much fun together. So let's get started. Y'all, we are here
to lay your podcast foundation. So first and foremost, let's talk about what is your podcast goal? I think that when you're really starting to cover what your number one podcast goal is, see, look, I can't help it, I go in and out I like, like being on screen, because then you can actually see the emotion in my face. As we talk about goals.
Goals are something that I believe is the driving force behind accomplishing anything, because you don't just by happenstance, accomplish a goal in your personal life in your professional life, right, you have to have something that you're aiming at. And today we're going to explore why you're creating your podcast. First and foremost, why are you doing this? Why are you doing this, we're gonna dive deeper into that. But if you feel compelled to tell everybody why you're creating
your podcasts, you can go ahead. But how having a goal will keep you motivated? Right, because life happens, I'll be the first to tell you that I have been too tired to podcast, I've had Sick Kids, I've had dogs that I've had to take care of I have had unexpected family emergencies, or people come into town and you're like, Oh my gosh, like I was gonna record my podcast, I was gonna do this, I was gonna batch a bunch of episodes. So life will
happen. And I love the idea of creating a podcast that works around your life, not vice versa, right? I don't want you planning your entire life around, what am I going to record? Again, when I'm going to do my podcast, I'm going to do this, I love to lay the foundation of a podcast. having in mind the goal that is really keeping me moving in the right direction from now until I decide to pivot change directions do something different with a podcast. But really just getting started
with that initial goal is crucial. So what will you focus on the next 30 days, we're going to dig into this and actually talk about how you can choose which goal is right for you. And then of course, we talked about your assignment today, your homework is going to be to share your podcast goal. So we're going to talk about that here in a little bit. But let's get started. I wanted to do a quick tutorial of how podcasting actually works. Because if you are brand new, then maybe you're
like, Can we start at the very basics. I don't know about y'all, but this is often me when I'm like a little nervous to raise my hand to ask a question. I'm like, yeah, I'm here. For really, I don't even know how podcasting works. I don't even know the very, very basics. So for you season, people, you're probably going to understand some of this information. But I wanted to lay it out there for everyone else that may not know the very basics of podcasting. So traditional podcasting,
this is how it works. You're going to record an episode, right, you're either going to sit down with your co host, you're going to be behind the scenes doing a solo episode, and you're recording your podcast, you have a audio file at that point. This is either an mp3 or a WAV file. And that is a podcast episode at its core. But it's just on your computer. Or maybe it's on your phone, right? I mean, I'm definitely not going to discriminate discriminate against recording a podcast episode
on your phone, because I've done it. So many times. There's different ways that we can record a podcast. But at the end of the day, it's not distributed to anyone. It's just recorded. It's just an audio file. So then you have to upload this episode to a hosting site. I use buzzsprout like you saw earlier, I have all this awesome swag. I'm a partner with them and I do lots of fun
things with their organization. But buzzsprout is the hosting site that I have used since the very beginning of my podcasting journey back in 2018. So this is what I have used and then they will take it and distribute this audio file to all of the podcast players to Apple podcast, Spotify, Google Play Stitcher, overcast pocket cast good pods, like all the different players. So you're not manually each week having to submit your podcast to all the possible places that someone
could listen to it. Okay, so this is how traditional podcasting works. And I know you're like, wait, what do you mean by traditional? Like, what are Is there a different way? Yes, there are many ways you could set up a subscription and do all these other fancy things. But for the purposes of this challenge, I just want to cover the basics and the most important things that you need to know to get started. So this is traditional
podcasting, in a nutshell. But like I said, at the beginning, the question of the day today is to talk about why are you creating your podcast? Why is this message all of a sudden, something that
you feel compelled to share with the world. And maybe it's one of those things where you're like, well, I've already been doing this, I have a YouTube channel, or I have a social media outlet that I have been using to share my message, I have a blog, I have a different type of content, that I want to pivot to a podcast and now feels like the right time. There are lots of reasons for creating
a podcast. But I wanted to go into some that are a little bit deeper than just to create content, we are going to have a few of those reasons to those, those are going to be some of the goals because I see you I know some of you, the one of these is really going to resonate with you in a second. If you're like, I really just want to create content, I definitely have one for you. So what is your podcast goal? fear about keeping notes, if you're taking notes like this is when you're going to
like start writing things down. You can put your notes in the comments, you can definitely have a Google Doc open, you can write it with a pen and paper y'all. Okay, just if you're new around here, you don't know this, y'all. This is my notebook. This is my daily life planner notebook. But I could show you all the journals that are off screen. Oh, wait, hang on, I actually have two more right here. So what I do his back to school just happen, I will go and do back to school
shopping for myself, for my supplies. These are like 25 cents at Target or wherever you shop. And I've just stocked up on them. I'm like, Well, I'm gonna need about 20. So go ahead and buy them all, when they're on sale. Because I go through these, I'm a note taker. So if that is you go ahead and get your notes out. Because we have some stuff. We're gonna do a recap in a little bit. But I think it's important to understand the different reasons why someone would create a podcast. So
making a deeper connection with your audience. I know that the world that I'm in when it comes to the online space, there's a lot of people who want to make a connection with someone else, whether it's their customer or the potential audience that they want to reach. And I think that creating a podcast is a fantastic way to make that intimate connection with someone else. It's just different. It's so different than watching someone on
YouTube. I mean, I'll give you an example. My kids, I have three boys like I mentioned earlier, they watch the guys from Dude Perfect all the time. We've been watching them for years. They actually are based in North Texas. So we've had ideas. We're like, Oh, you know, should we go? Should we go see where like their headquarters are and all the things like they feel this connection with them through their YouTube channel. But I have to tell you, my podcast experience is even
more connected to the host. I listened to it's so silly. I listened to the smartlace podcast. It's one of my favorites. I love the office ladies as well. But on the smartlist podcast, it's Sean Hayes. Jason Bateman Will Arnett. And they're just so goofy. I am a student of comedy. I love to watch comedies. It's my favorite. My husband and I just binge watch a bunch of stand up this weekend. We're actually going to take Jim gaffigan this
weekend. I'm really excited. But I think that having that connection of just people say stuff and you're just you're laughing like do you do this too when you're listening to a podcast and you're like, Oh my gosh, did they really say that? And I'm laughing out loud. Or I've had this emotional connection of oh my gosh, I could cry from the story or Oh, I deeply feel that there's something special about podcasting that allows To
have this deeper connection with your audience. So this could absolutely be one of your goals for starting your show. And then to kind of flip that on its head, you're like Krystal, I'm here for the leads, I'm here to drive more traffic to my business. I know that a podcast could be the marketing arm for my organization, and it's going to be how I get traffic to my website or get
people interested in what I do. I can say, hey, you have questions about this, why I have 10 podcast episodes that you can go listen to that answer these specific questions. And they're actually in sequential order. So go listen to my podcasts. Because Yeah, it'll be it'll be fantastic. And people will have that connection with you. So if you're creating a podcast that speaks directly to your potential customers, they already feel like they know you. There's not so
much of a cold call anymore. When you tell someone to listen to your podcast. And they're like, yeah, I listened to like, 20 episodes, like I know all about you and your dog and your favorite kind of coffee. Like Yeah, like, I know, you like I'm just ready to do business with you. That is a legitimate reason to start your podcast and put it out into the world. The next one is one of my favorites. And this is to educate, entertain, and
or inspire. And the reason why I say and, or because I feel like this is the reason why I have my podcast, I love sharing the message that I have about podcasting, because I feel like it's a gift for me to be able to give to other people. It's not just about sharing my message and my story, it's about me putting the tools in the hands of other people who have even more powerful messages. I have a student of mine, her name is Laurie. And she speaks to pod, she speaks to podcasters. She
speaks on her podcast, to grieving moms. It's all about moms who have lost children and how to really go through that process. And I remember when she came to me, I just thought, Oh my gosh, like, that's when I knew that my podcast and what I was doing was so much bigger than just me. You know, people often come to me and say, I don't like to market. I don't like to talk about myself,
it feels weird. Whenever I just talk about me go listen to my podcast, do like, go check out my social media do all the things and I said, Yeah, but how can you make it about them? How can you make it to where the impact is being seen in the other people who are receiving the message. That's where the education, the entertainment, the inspiration really comes in. And it's one of the reasons why I have my show. So that's one of those
goals that really hits home for me. And if that is one of yours, then I encourage you, if you have more than one goal, that's totally fine. But I think that having that deeper connection to the passion behind your show is really important. And we'll get to that in a second as to why. Okay, so a creative outlet or a hobby. There's a reason why there were so many podcasts that started in 2020.
There's a reason. And y'all know the reason everyone was stuck at home, everyone was all of a sudden forced to be at home with all of these questions. And all of these just like, what do we do now? Like, what's what's actually happening. And I just want to think about something else besides the news or interacting with my family who I've been stuck with forever, or, you know, you just need this creative outlet, because we all are
our own person. We all have ideas, we all have hobbies, or we all just have something that we want to do. That's just for fun, or just because just because so I think that having a creative outlet or a hobby is awesome. My mom, she actually has the edible gardens podcast, shout out mom, but it's all about gardening. And she really saw an uptick in her numbers in 2020 because of how many people wanted to start gardens as their creative
outlet. And she had already been podcasting for about a year and a half, when she was just like, Oh my gosh, like I didn't realize how important this message was to get to other people so that they could support their hobbies and their dreams by listening to what I'm talking about with gardening. Plus, she also will relate to another one. I'm going to bring mom back here in a second. I promise I'm not picking on my mom. We have conversations about this all the time. But it's
really important. I'll share with you here in a second but get your ideas, knowledge and expertise out into the world. This is one That everyone if you're like, I don't know what goal to pick, pick this one, pick this one. Because this is probably why you're here or number one, making a deeper connection with your audience. Hopefully, you want to make a deeper connection with the people that you hope to inspire and bring motivation to one day, but just getting your ideas and your
knowledge out into the world. And I think it's really fun. Whenever you have something that is really precious, or maybe special to you, and you're like, I'm really good at this. Actually, I have a friend and her husband, it started this fantasy football podcast last year. And she was like, Man, you know, they really want to do this podcast they were in and my husband is fantasy
football. I don't know anything about it. But my friend Teresa, she was like, Yeah, like he wants to start this fantasy football podcast, because, you know, they won number one in their league last year. And they got like a bunch of like, press about it. And everyone wanted to know, like, well, how did you know this? And how did you pick this guy? And how did you make your trades? And so they thought, you know what, why don't we just start a
podcast. And so they did that just because they had knowledge and ideas, and they wanted to share it with other people. There was no other reason they thought, hey, it'd be cool if we could monetize this thing. But we don't really know. Like, what it's going to turn into why don't we just get started. And it turns out, they just had so much fun, they get to sit around and talk about fantasy football even more, and they didn't have to bug her about it. So but it was a win win for
her. For sure. Because she was like, I don't even know what what this is all about or what? I don't I don't get it. So I let him like talk to his friends about it and do their thing. So that is another reason. And then the last goal that I have, and this is probably relatable to many people here. But you just love to talk. So I want to bring my mom back into this. And like I said, I'm not gonna pick on her because I get this from her. And we are just we're totally in sync on
this. But she told me that her podcast is it's almost like therapy for her. Because she loved gardening so much. So so much. And she sent me in every time I would go to a family dinner or I would go somewhere. I just felt like I wanted to talk to people about gardening and share with them all the things. But then I was like, Oh my gosh, I don't I don't like they don't get it. They don't want to talk about the dynamic accumulators and hang on I can get this I promise. We've had so
many conversations about gardening. It's ridiculous. I feel like I know all the things about gardening. But she said, before I started my podcast, I felt like I was 11 months pregnant in the month of July in Texas. What's like, well, that's pretty descriptive mom. And she's like, No, I just felt miserable that I had all this information. She had all this passion. And she didn't know who to get it out. She's like, I just needed a word vomit on somebody. And speaking was
the way for her to do that. So if you just love to talk, that is okay. You can pair just loving to talk in your creative outlet together. And I mean, those are fantastic goals to have.
Okay, so let me get situated here. So we are here for day two of the five day podcast challenge. And we are talking about your podcast topic. Alright guys. So we are going to get started. If you have any questions, put them in the chat. But we're going to get started on your podcast topics. I'm going to make it where everybody can see this a little bit easier. I always try to clean this up. Before we get started. We are talking about your topic today is
gonna be so much fun. It's so much fun because I love it when we can really go deep in one subject and your podcast topic is one of those that's often I don't want to say it's overlooked, right? Because people they know that they have to decide on their podcast topic. But I always get the question, how do you decide maybe you have five different ideas? Maybe you have two ideas? Maybe
you have 500? And you're like, how can I just pick one maybe this is the thing that is keeping you from starting to record your podcast starting to design your artwork, because you can't think of a name because you can't don't know nail down your topic. Like I get it. It's a big decision. So I'm going to help you walk through things to consider as you pick your podcast topic. Then we're going to talk about the intersection of speaking and passion because this is very, very important. I'm
not going to give you a spoiler alert. I'm not going to give you a spoiler, we're just we're gonna have to wait. You're going to be patient and we're going to get to that because it is one of my favorite things to talk about and it's to talk about talking Well, you'll get it, you'll understand a second. And then why choosing one topic is super important. I cannot stress this enough. When people come to me with 17 ideas, and they want to shove all of them into a podcast.
There are some strategic reasons why you don't want to do this. But there's also some practical reasons why this can make your podcast journey a lot more complicated. If you don't pick just one topic. So we're ready. Are y'all ready? Tell me in the chat. Let's just go ahead and do our first giveaway. Oh, you got to be on your toes paying attention. Tell me in the comments. I'm ready. Tell me I'm ready in the comments. And the first person that I see respond is going to win our
first door hanger. Who's gonna be who's gonna be who's gonna be that's gonna get the door hanger. Who's gonna get it? Who's gonna get it? I'm waiting. Oh, Eric. Eric is the first one. I see. He says I'm ready with a smiley face. Okay, Eric, send an email to Krystal at Krystal Proffitt calm with your email address. I'm gonna get this in the mail to you today, but yeah, okay, Jonathan's ready. So, here's Eric. Jonathan's ready Kevin's ready. Theresa's ready. Diane's ready, OSHA.
Shauna, I don't know why I want to say OSHA Shawna Osho Sanya, I'm going to get this I need you to spell this phonetically. Because I want to get your name correct. I'm gonna get it correct. before Friday. It's gonna it's gonna happen. Yeah. Jonathan says Congrats, Eric. Awesome. So let's do this. Let's do this. Okay, how to decide on your podcast topic. What should you talk about? What should you talk about? Like I said, I get the question. Like, I don't know how to decide on just
one. I love them all. I want to talk about all the things. But there's a reason why we decide on just one podcast topic. So let's go from the top. And then so we're gonna think of this is like super high level. And then we're gonna bring it down to granular because it's a lot easier when you approach it this way, as opposed to trying to think of one super, super specific niche thing, and branching out. So this is what I was talking about earlier. I didn't want this was my spoiler.
I didn't want to say what can you talk about for hours, because you're literally going to be talking about your podcast for hours, and hours and hours. And I don't say that to scare you.
Hopefully, that gets you excited. But I just want to hit you with the hard reality that you're going to be talking about your podcast, probably when you're recording your podcast topic, you're going to be like, Hey, you know, this is, this is what I'm recording about, then you're going to be possibly getting guests for your podcast, that's another way you're going to be talking about it, then you're going to be planning content around this topic, then you're going to be marketing this
podcast topic, then you're probably going to be doing even more marketing. Do you see where I'm going with this? This podcast topic is going to be a really big part of your life. And you need to think about what is something that I can talk about for hours, because as a good podcaster, it is your job as the host as the leader of the show, to really go all in on your topic and on your show and not be afraid to talk about it. I just get so many people that say I don't I don't really know
how to talk about my show. Well, you have to get comfortable talking about your show before you can do it. And I just have to tell you, whenever people come to me, and they're like, well, I recorded a show, and I'm putting it out there. Okay, well, are you marketing it? No. And it's not really growing? I'm like, well, there's, there's a reason why there's a reason why. And they're like, well, I already already do the recording I don't
have to talk about anymore. In order to be an effective podcast marketer, you're going to have to be comfortable talking about your topic. So get comfortable. Like, here's your hard truth. You got to get comfortable talking about this topic for a long time. But then I also want you to consider what are you passionate about? And maybe you're like, well, I could talk about this for hours, but obviously I'd be passionate about it. Not necessarily. I wanted to give you a clear example.
So I love to cook it's one of my decompressing things which for most people, it stresses them out. I love to cook because it's like my time in the kitchen. I can just put it in a podcast and listen to it or watch shits Creek on replay for like the 1,000th time or the office or anything like that. Like I just love to cook, but I wouldn't want to talk about it on a podcast for hours. I'm passionate about cooking, but I would not want to talk about it because y'all I'm not a
trained professional cook. I it would be a boring podcast, people would say, Krystal, you don't know what you're talking about. And I'm like, Yeah, you're right. Because I throw a lot of stuff together. I read the Pioneer woman's recipes. And then I'm like, Okay, well, I don't really like that. So I'm gonna, I'm gonna substitute this little dash that little bit of this, but I
wouldn't want to talk about it for hours. So even though you may have a passion for something, you have to have that intersection of what you can talk about for hours, and something that you're passionate about. And that is this space where I want you to have that overlap for your podcast topic. Well, I hope you enjoyed this sneak peek behind the scenes of the five day podcast
challenge. Like I said, we have been having a blast and if you still want to join us, there is time you can go to the show notes. KrystalProffitt.com/episode284. If you're listening to this way, after this episode has aired, then I hope you enjoyed this little sneak peek behind the scenes. But we may have already taken the recordings down if this is way in the
future. But for those of you listening in real time, it isn't too late to still join us and come hang out with us for the last few days of the challenge because we're having so much fun and so many people are having, they're taking massive action and already getting lots of results just by discovering and thinking about their podcast in a new way as they lay the foundation for their show.
Again, the show notes for today, KrystalProffitt.com/episode284. But that's all I have for you today. So make sure you're following this podcast wherever you're listening to it. And I encourage you to leave a rating and review wherever you're listening to the show. Tell me what your number one takeaway was from this. And I will see you again next time. But that's all I have for you today. So remember, keep it up. We all have to start somewhere.
