Are you ready to start making money with your podcast? And all the podcast audience said, Amen. Am I right? Holy moly, this is something that I get asked on a pretty regular basis. It's about podcast monetization. When am I ready for it? And then how do I actually go about it? And the answer to both of those questions is going to be it depends. It really does. Because not everyone thinks about podcasting the way that I
do, and that's fine. But because you're here listening to this podcast, I know that you want to know, Krystal, what are all of my options? And so today, we're gonna talk about monetizing your podcast and what that can look like in 2022. And I'm really excited about this, because I have a lot of resources for you in today's episode, so let's get right to it. Welcome to the profit podcast where we teach entrepreneurs how to start
launch and market their podcast. I'm your host, Krystal, Proffitt, and I'm so excited that you're here. Thanks for hanging out with me today. Because if you've been trying to figure out the world of podcasting, think of this show as the time saving shortcut you've been looking for. So let's get right to it, shall we?
So I used to say that there are five main ways for you to monetize a podcast. But over the years, I really kind of just narrowed everything down to three. And there's a few reasons why. One of the ways that I used to tell people was to sell their own merchandise. But if you've been around here, or you're brand new to the podcast, you will quickly learn that I have no merchandise. I don't have any swag for the podcast or anything like that. So I don't like to teach things that I don't do
personally. Because whenever I put it out there, and I say, oh, you should 100% have swag for your podcast. Then people come to me and say, Oh, well, where are the resources? We're like, what company do you use? Where can I get stickers? Where can I get mugs? Where can I get sweatshirts, and I look like a deer in headlights. Basically, I feel like an idiot, because I'm saying, oh, you should do
this. But I don't know anything about that. So I've kind of taken that off off the plate, it's still a way, don't get me wrong, you can still absolutely use really cool things that you want to sell to your fan base, your loyal listeners. But it's not something that I have first hand knowledge with. So I kind of took it off the
plate. And then there's another one, which is actually what we're going to start off with here today that I've condensed down into one way to make money where previously I would have said it was too. And that is number one. One of the best ways to monetize a podcast in 2022 is going to be to promote your own products and services. This is going to look different for a wide variety of
podcast host. So your own product or service could be a digital course, it could be a membership, it could be a live event that you host once a year, it could be you know, a book, it could be a low ticket offer, there's so many different things that would fall under the category of a product or service. So I'm not going to put it into a box and say here's like two options, you have to pick
which one you want to do. Like maybe you have a coaching service, or you have any other number of things that you are going to create for your podcast audience. But I did want to give you some resources in case you're like, oh, digital courses, that's what I want to do. So I had my friend and mentor come on the show, Amy Porterfield. And she talked about we had this
fantastic interview. It was around the time that she was launching her program, digital course Academy, which only opens a few times a year and when this episode airs, it's actually not open right now. But we had a really good conversation about podcast monetization with a digital course. And I want you to go check it out. So it's going to be linked in the show notes. So
KrystalProffitt.com/episode319. I want you to go listen to this if you've been thinking about, you know, I really want to create some sort of online program or my know that my audience would be really interested in this like she is absolutely the person to learn from. And she's the one who's taught me how to create my own program, which is
profit podcasting. It teaches people how to get started, how to launch a podcast, how to market the thing, and so I have learned in my own product and service creation journey, that if you're creating content on your podcast and you know routinely, what your audience is responding to, then why not explore monetizing your show with a
product. I've also done this, you know, profit podcasting is kind of my intermediate program where it's not, you know, this big, huge robust course, you can absolutely get through the entire thing in a weekend, and then implement it over, you know, several weeks, the idea behind it is to
launch your podcast in 30 days or less. And so in that program, it's it's pretty basic, but I have something that's even simpler, I have my ultimate podcast, launch toolkit, this is another simple what I would call a mini training a mini course. And it's $37. So we're not talking about, you have to create something that's like a $2,000 program, to be able to sell it on your podcast and be
profitable. I know lots of other online business owners and people that have podcasts that make a really decent living off of a $97 product or $57 product. It's just all about how you market it and you present it to your audience. And if it's the right fit at the right time, for where your audience is. So I want you to go to the shownotes.
So go to KrystalProffitt.com/episode319. And it's where I'm gonna link to the interview that I did with Amy as well as some of the other resources because I've done and it's funny, I'm laughing at myself, because I thought I had done like two or three videos on my YouTube channel about making money with the podcast. Oh, no, no, there's a whole playlist. There's a whole playlist about making money with a podcast, I think that there
was probably 20 or 30 videos over there. Some of them are very specific, like they have to do with setting up like your Buzzsprout affiliate marketplace, which we're going to talk about that in a second, or how to use the podcast monetization tools in Buzzsprout. So if you're a Buzzsprout user, or you're just curious to learn more about making money with a podcast, please go watch those videos. I'm going to have the entire
playlist linked in the show notes. So again, KrystalProffitt.com/episode319, you're gonna find all those videos, and you can just go and binge watch them or select through the ones because some of them are about podcast mindset, like what you need to think about as you set yourself up, you and your show up to actually make money with your show. And then the other ones are tips, strategies, resources or things that I have done
to create revenue for my podcast. Okay, so that is way number one de monetizing podcast and 2022 promoting your own products and services. The second thing we need to talk about this one, I don't have experience with either, but I know a lot of people that this is just like a Grand Slam for them. It's like the best thing that ever happened to their show.
So we got to talk about it. And that is having subscriptions or Patreon memberships, like all of those kind of fall into the same category. And there's a lot of different ones. I'll link to them in the show notes. But Patreon buy me a coffee. There's other ones that I've never even heard of that people will come to me and say, Oh, do you know about this? And like, No, I didn't even realize y'all. This is so funny. So I listen to all of my podcast, not my podcast,
but the podcast that I enjoy. You know, office ladies, there's the Yellowstone Can we please talk about the official Yellowstone podcast, I love Yellowstone. I love the new show 1883 If you have not checked it out, go to Paramount plus, I think that's what we watched on YouTube TV. But you can watch on Paramount plus, it's so good. It's so stinking good. But I listened to all of these podcasts on good pods. This is a particular app
that I like to watch my shows on. And I'm gonna link to it a few videos that I've done about good pods in the show notes. Because a feature that they recently added is you can add what is called a tip jar. So I've added it on there where people could leave you know, a tip either through I think that you have to have like a Venmo or buy me a coffee but I just connected my PayPal account just to see if it would work. Let's just be really
honest. I was like, You know what, let's let's just try this out because other people have done it. They've had success with it using buy me a coffee and other things like that. Why don't I just try it out for having good pods connected and having my shows on there. And knowing that I talked to other podcasters and creators. I was like this is my experiment to see how this works.
So I'm gonna link Good pods below. But I think that with Apple making all the changes they did in 2021, like the big changes, they added Apple subscriptions. And then Spotify has something along the same lines as well as some of the smaller companies that are in the podcast subscription services. You could 100% monetize
your podcast this way. I'm gonna link to the bonus episode I did with Jordan Blair, where we talked about like she is one of my friends I talked about earlier, that's had amazing success with Patreon. She has Patreon members for her podcast. She has the dream full podcast. I'm gonna link to her podcast in the show notes. But it's all about bedtime stories. So she reads bedtime stories with she's beautiful voice. Oh my gosh, she's such a
beautiful voice. And people will turn on her podcast as they're going to sleep or as their kids are falling asleep. They'll turn it on. So I love this model for her. Because she's told me she was like, well, Krystal, what you teach other people wouldn't work for my audience, because they're like, they're trying to zone out like this is a meditative practice that they're listening to my show to zone out. So if I put in, you know, an ad for mattresses in the middle of my show, like it,
my listenership would just drop off. So what she has done instead is she has monetized her platform, using Patreon and she has Patreon members. And it was so cute. I actually saw her the other day, I follow her on Instagram, I'm gonna tag all her information will be in the show notes. So shout out Jordan, I love all that you're doing. But she I was following her stories on Instagram. And she had handwritten all of her Christmas cards to all of her Patreon members. And
I thought that's so special. So she had just written out like, this is what they got for being a certain tier and a Patreon member, they got these handwritten notes from Jordan. So, so fun. I think that subscriptions are just a really cool way for you to add extra value to those dedicated loyal fans of your show, and be able to add some extra revenue in your pocket for your podcast.
Okay. Number three. This is a big one, because I went back and I did my revenue report, right at the end of the year, do my revenue report for 2021. And I'm wondering, what how much is all of my revenue coming in? Right? Where's it coming from? Is it coming from creating my own product and service? Is it coming from my affiliate marketing campaigns? Is it coming from book sales? Like what is it coming from? This blew my mind, okay? Because I was just
like, I was really blown away. And this number was actually a lot higher last year. But I'm still surprised that it's like, it's the way that I make most of my revenue 54% of my total revenue for 2021. Was affiliate marketing, affiliate marketing. Yes. So me promoting other people's programs, services, products, all of these things have added up to 54% of my total revenue in 2021. And it just it goes without saying that affiliate marketing isn't going anywhere. Like I've been
using affiliate marketing since day one. It's actually what I used before I even started podcasting I had been using on my back in my blogging days, talking about it like it was 17,000 years ago, right? Back in the day whenever I used to blog. No, I mean, it wasn't that long ago. But also it feels like a lifetime. But I was an Amazon associate, like an Amazon affiliate. And I have been doing affiliate marketing for years and years at this point. And it is the most lucrative
revenue stream for my business. Now, it's not all like all my eggs aren't in one basket. I have them spread out. I have I mean, I have a list. I have a list in my Asana. I'm actually looking at Asana right now it's where I have my show notes are all the notes for today's episode. And I want to say I have at least 10 to 12 affiliate marketing campaigns that I run throughout the year 10 to 12. And they are strategic. Some of them only pay in
what I call like expenses. Just I just call them expense affiliate marketing, because maybe I don't get a direct payment. Like they don't actually send me a check or they don't send me a deposit or PayPal. They don't do any of that. But they will send me a credit to my account for the amount of
money that other people have signed up. So in that rate, I'm getting something that would typically be an expense Since it's getting paid for, so I'm getting free services that I can like that money instead of it going to expenses can be allocated for something else, or it could go into savings. So this is a really big deal. And especially whenever I'm looking at, you know, here's 2022.
It's a brand new year, it's coming up, what kind of promotions and campaigns do I want to run in the new year, I am making time and making time for affiliate marketing campaigns. And there are some that are really big like this year, I participated in Marie Forleo. B School, I participated in Amy Porterfield digital course Academy, I did BC stack, I did podcasters kit, I did a big launch campaign with Kajabi. Like, there was a lot of really big campaigns that happen throughout the
year. And so what I'm doing is I will look at, okay, maybe for this whole month, I just want to talk about one campaign. So I will set aside time for that whole month to just talk about that one
thing. But if you're just getting started, and the reason why I say that is because I'm not telling you to do affiliate marketing, and then every single episode, you talk about the 17 different affiliate programs you're a part of, it's just all white noise at that point, I think that the better way to approach affiliate marketing is to look at a 12 month calendar. And I'm saying this because this is airing, you know, right around like we're
getting ready to go into 2022. And I want you to look at your whole calendar and say, Okay, I have a big launch in this month, I have a big launch in this month, but then I have two or three months where I'm like, Well, I'm not launching anything or my programs not launching or I have another big affiliate campaign. What can I talk about? Well, you could promote stream yard, right? This is one of the programs that I've I love stream yard, this is my streaming service, and they're freaking
amazing. I love stream arts so so much. And I've started creating campaigns around, okay, I want to talk about live streaming, or video podcast in let's say, four YouTube videos in a row. Well, what I will do is I will take a podcast ad or an ad that I've used previously, and I'll figure out what how can I monetize this in the podcast on my YouTube channel and send an email to my email list. And I will be strategic with that, instead of just telling you like a one off like, oh, you
should try stream yard. Here's my affiliate link, you can do that. But it won't be as effective as let's say a small launch campaign for your affiliate promotions. And I know you're saying Krystal, that sounds like a lot of work. There. So I see you. I see you if that's you right now. You're smiling because you're like, Oh, dang, she just she called me out? She called me she knows. Yep, that's me. You're raising your hand. You're
saying that just sounds like a lot of work? Well, I want to tell you about a few ways that affiliate marketing doesn't have to be a lot of work. But the more you plan for it, the more profitable they will be for sure. So I want you to think about what are the companies that you are already affiliate for? Who do you want to be an affiliate for? Like if I just said stream yard? You're like, what? I use stream yard, I need to sign up to Yes, you need to sign up to be an affiliate for them.
And create your own podcast ads to promote what you love about stream yard on your own podcast, y'all. You don't have to wait to get a sponsor. You don't have to wait for stream yard to approach you and say, Hey, will you please sponsor my podcast because it's probably not going to happen. Unless you have a show that is strictly about live streaming and you get millions of downloads. Let's be honest, they're not going to come knocking on
your door until that happens. But what you can do is start making money on evergreen with affiliate marketing. So I wanted to give you some more tools. So I have a podcast episode that's called How to Get Started with affiliate marketing and I'm going to have it linked in the show notes. So again, the show notes. KrystalProffitt.com/episode319. I'm going to have
a link to what I've told you. It's a lot of it's kind of what we talked about here today, but it goes a little bit deeper into my own journey with affiliate marketing. But also, in that playlist for making money with a podcast I mentioned that I would talk about Buzzsprout affiliate marketplace, if you are a Buzzsprout user, you better be using
the affiliate marketplace. Because I use this if you see links in any of my podcast episodes, you'll see where it says, you know, try Buzzsprout out or there's one that I have for there's another program that I will talk about from time to time and some of them sometimes it's stream yard,
sometimes it's ConvertKit. Sometimes it's another affiliate that I think would go well with that podcast y'all all that is setup in Buzzsprout, I don't do that every time I just click a button in a drop down menu and boom, it adds it to a podcast episode. It's super, super simple. So while yes, it can sound like a big complex thing, if you've never done affiliate marketing before, there are strategies, there are ways to learn it. I recommend looking up podcast about affiliate
marketing as well. But I really, really hope that you add it to your list of monetizing for your podcast in 2022. Because you don't have to have 1000s of listeners and millions of downloads to get started making money with your podcast, you can start doing all of this, all of it on day one, all of it. You can tell people hey, we're eventually going to have a digital course for this podcast, or I'm writing my next book, or I really want you to sign up for our event that's coming up
in summer 2022. You don't have to wait, you can go ahead and start promoting it now start talking about it. Now if you have something coming up, start putting that in your dynamic content. I'll link to some episodes and some of information about dynamic content because I think that that has had a lot to do with my success with my affiliate marketing campaigns. Because it's just I love it. If you've been around here, you know.
Yeah, Krystal really geeks out on dynamic content, you should go look up the episodes that we've done about it because it is it i To me, it was a game changer. It was a totally a game changer. And this helped me so much in my podcast journey. But let's just do a quick recap. So best ways to monetize a podcast in 2022. Number one, promoting your own products and services. Number two, subscriptions and memberships. And number three affiliate marketing, please go to the shownotes
KrystalProffitt.com/episode319. To see everything that we talked about y'all, there's so many resources, there's podcasts episodes, there's YouTube videos, there's just so many resources. I don't want you to say Krystal, I really want to make money next year, but I don't know how to do it. No, no, I've I've everything this episode is delivering you ways to make money on a silver platter. So I do not want you to come to me crying, saying I don't know what to do you know
what to do. You know what to do. Now, if you need help with the strategy on how to get there. That's a totally different thing. And we can talk about that. But I really want you to think about how you're going to monetize in 2022.
And speaking of everything that we talked about here today is something that I'm really excited about. We have a new group coaching program coming up in the next few weeks. I'm so excited about it, we are rereleasing the Poddy People, but it's going to be slightly different. So the Poddy People was previously a membership for beginners that I had that I launched in 2020. And it's gone through a few iterations. And now it is going to be called the
Poddy People Co Op. So this is the first time I've really said any of this publicly, which feels kind of scary, but also makes it really real. I've been working on everything behind the scenes for the last few weeks. And I'm putting together what is a group coaching program, it is a six week group coaching program for podcasters that have been creating content for at least three to six months,
this is not for beginners. Like there's actually going to be a process where we're going to talk about who's right for this and who's not right for it right now. And it is for beginners. So if you're just launching your podcast in January, or in the first quarter of 2022, this group will not be for you. It's not because we're going to be going at a pace that would confuse someone that's brand new. So if you're just getting started, profit podcasting, my digital course would be
where you want to go. It's all pre recorded and everything because the party people Co Op is going to be live like it is live group coaching, I'm going to be doing some teaching, we're going to have some breakout group coaching like it's going to be it's an intensive, that's basically what it is. And it's it's going to be something that's going to shake you up in the best way possible and
get you out of your comfort zone. So if you've been listening to the podcast for a while, and I know there's many of you, especially in our Facebook group that have reached out and said, we're ready for the next level and you're ready to learn how to build a community how to get better at SEO, how to increase your organic reach and how
to monetize your podcast. This is it. So I want you to go to KrystalProffitt.com/waitlist and let me know you're interested like put your name in there and that way you get notified as soon as the doors open. So I'm just I'm so excited there. Oh Morning. I want to say I don't want to tell you the exact date that is happening because things might change in the future, but it's coming. It's opening in January. So January 2020. To the party
people Co Op is coming. So go to KrystalProffitt.com/waitlist, but I'll have a link in the show notes as well.
But that's all I have for you today. This is so fun. I love to talk about making money with a podcast and I want more people to be doing this. I want you to be making money with your show. You're working so hard to create your content, and I want you to get paid for it. But that's all I have for you today. So if you have not already, make sure you hit this follow or subscribe button wherever you're listening to this podcast. And as always remember, keep it up. We all have to start somewhere
