Are you a smooth Are you a Qunti person? Peanut butter has been a pantry staple for as long as I can remember, Susie. Unfortunately, my little girl has a peanut allergy, so it's gone from our pantry, but I know a lot of our listeners absolutely love it. So today on the Nutrition Couch, we are talking about our

favorite types of peanut butter. Hi, I'm Leanne Walk and I'm Sizzy Burrow and the s two of astrayas leading n aeticians, we bring you the Nutrition Couch, cutuct review, weekly chat and new products and old favorites that you can find in the supermarket. So we'll dive straight in, Susie, but quick yes or no peanut butter fan.

Speaker 2

I like peanut butter and banana, but my little boys are more of a fan than I am, probably, but I do. It's great, you know, stable to do some healthy baking with as well, and I think I'm with you. I think a lot of people will enjoy this episode because they love nothing more than dipping their spoon in the peanut butter and having a little cheeky chop up through the.

Speaker 1

Day or a couple of chiky top ups really.

Speaker 2

Yeah, you've picked some great ones. I have to say.

Speaker 1

Can we just say the price of peanut butter has gone up so much?

Speaker 2

Yes, I noticed the first one we chose.

Speaker 1

I'm just looking six dollars forty. Anyway, that's a whole nother story.

Speaker 2

I think there's international shortages of peanuts actually, and I think this is bumping up the price in particular. But yeah, that I noticed that too. That is a lot of money for a spread, isn't it.

Speaker 1

It's like everything now, everything's just gone up so much. But we can sit there and we can wind, or we can talk about peanut butter. So let's go. The first one that I've chosen is the bigger light smooth peanut butter. So it's four hundred and seventy grams, so it's a larger jar for six dollars forty. It's retailing four now. Per serving size is twenty two grams. But I think we probably let me check the serving sizes of the other ones. Twenty grams. Well, maybe we'll just

do a serving size then. Yeah, So it's roughly out twenty grams.

Speaker 2

Which I think is a decent serving size too. Because on my male pants I always put a teaspoon or two for my clients, and they're horrified. They're like, oh, you said teaspoon table.

Speaker 1

Yeah, it was supposed to be in there.

Speaker 2

Yeah, because it is very calorie dents, as we will our listeners will learn today.

Speaker 1

So the first point I want to make about this bigger light one is that the front of package labeling say's light and big bold letters. There's twenty five percent less fat and it's a smooth and the color is blue and white, and to me, blue and white for whatever reason, just to me and my brain signifies like

a lighter, low fat option. So automatically I would grab this off the shelf without reading the nutrition label and think this is a better optional, this is a lower calorie option, and I'm sure many people would think the same thing. So it's quite interesting to actually review this. One'soozy because if you look at the ingredient list, it's sixty two percent roasted peanuts, which my brain automatically goes, well, what's the other what's is only sixty two Yeah, it's

only sixty two percent peanuts. The second ingredient is nato dextrin, which is a sugar, followed by sugar which is a sugar followed by vegetable oil and some salt and some emulsifiers. So we have a couple of types of sugar and some vegetable oil which just don't need to be in there, let's be honest. And it's made from less than ten percent Australian ingredients, so it's definitely not we're not sporting

local either. Now when we look at the nutrition analysis, so per serving, it's twenty two grams, which is roughly a tablespoon. Energy Wise, we've got five hundred and twelve kilogi protein. We've got three point eight total fat is eight point three grams, with one point seven grams being saturated fat. Carbs are seven point eight grams. Sugar, which I must say is mostly added, is three point four grams of sugar. Sodium is one hundred and thirty six

milligrams in a serfs in a tablespoon. So not my favorite products, Uzy. I think a lot of people are unaware that, I mean. Peanut butter's come a long way. Certainly, Like ten years ago, most of the peanut butter on the market had added sugar and added salt in there. But these days you can easily easily find just one

hundred percent peanut butter with no additions in there. But this one was an interesting one because you would think that it is a better option, but it's still got the added sugar, it's still got the added salts in there.

Speaker 2

It's a calorie dense food. Now, if you get the right mix, which we'll move on to, it can be nutritious. And I add its source of good fat, but it's basically one hundred calories per tablespoon. So if you're someone who has a couple of those a day, that's half a meal because it is primarily fat. So it's it's you know, got not shy of you know, a teaspoon of sugar in every tablespoon. I would not buy this product. I one hundred percent. I'm looking for no added sugar

peanut butter. You're then paying for the quality. So yeah, certainly not a healthier product, even though it's musk, reading is lighter, or it tastes good. But certainly there's much better peanut butters out there nutritionally.

Speaker 1

And if you listen to the latest Sunday episode, which is episode one three nine, we actually talked about added sugars and this is one of the perfect examples of you think you don't eat that much sugar, but it really creeps in through sauces, through spreads, through breads and cereals. Even like if you're having two three tablespoons of this, and let's be honest, if you're having two pieces of toast for breakfast, you're very likely to put two or

three tablespoons of peanut butter on it. You're consuming two to three teaspoons of added sugars into your diet already, let alone what else you might have throughout that day as well. So it's very easy to creep in. So you need to be very careful to read your nutrition labels as well. Certainly in something like peanut butter, we

don't want added sugars. If we're looking at something like jam orna tella, naturally there's going to be sugars in there, and we're aware of that, hope fleet and accepting of that if we're using something like jam on toast, But in something like peanut butter, we're really wanting those those fats in there, not the added subbers.

Speaker 2

True, true, true, But it was a good fine to talk about.

Speaker 1

Now. The second option is the Maver's smudgy protein plus five seed peanut butter, so three hundred and seventy five grams, so a smaller bottle, but six dollars fifties, so no smaller price point, and again made in Australia from less than ten percent ingredients. We don't do many peanuts here do.

Speaker 2

Or seeds, nuts and seeds, we don't have a whole lot.

Speaker 1

Although I think this is an Aussie brand, isn't It's just unfortunately we can't get the assy ingredients.

Speaker 2

It is an Australian brand. But as I said, my understanding is that it's very difficult in general to source these products, and things like for pedas and sunflower seeds which really improves the nuditional profile, just aren't available here or they can't. Basically, the demand for this in Australia is really high and they just can't service it with what we're currently growing. So it's really interesting actually from a food provision for companies and what they do with

cost and price points. So yeah, interesting thing that will happen. But this is a really interesting product because the Mavers range generally do one hundred percent nutspreads. But I actually love it because it's got such a beautiful mix of added seeds through it, which you would argue are really improving the fat profile. But they haven't given us any detail on that fat profile. But mind you, I think

they do on the label. This is just the Woolies profile. Okay, I should say I have been a consultant to Mavers for a number of years, so just to for full disclosure, but the first ingredients is peanuts and then followed by peanut flower and then cheer seeds, linse seeds, sun flower seeds, per peters, and kin white five percent, so it's about ninety five percent peanuts with the addition of these extra seeds,

which is a beautiful profile. But there's take home message for me here leand is it similar calorie wise per serve at for sixty eight killo jeels, which is just shy of other hundred or just over one hundred calories similar to the bigger variety, but it's double the protein at six point four gram so you're basically getting and paying for a better quality product. The fat is eight point four grams per serve, which the total fat is similar,

and I'm just looking at the saturated fat. It's one here, but you would argue the long chain good fats would be much better in this product, and no added sugars here, so they're still coming in at one point three, but there's nothing added, and you're getting close to two grams of dietary fiber per serve, which is not insignificant from a nut spread, and particularly if you are trying to get a range of different fats in your diet each day.

This is a really strong product. And I have to say that the reason I am an ambassador for Mavers is that all of their products are really strong and there's a range of great nuts spreads. In particular, I love the unhold Tahini because it's so rich in calcium for all my plant based diet people. But this is

a really strong product. Like if you like it and it's in your house, nutritionally superior to one hundred percent peanuts, absolutely, and there's a whole different range, And when they're on half priced sale at the supermarkets, I would stock up because they're very really strong products.

Speaker 1

In general, I really like it. I would recommend it I do for my clients. Sure the price pond is a little bit higher, but you're paying for quality. Put it that way, You know, two grams nearly two grams of fiber per tablespoon is excellent. You've got some great diversity in there for you got health. Although you know five percents of the seeds is smaller amount, but you're

still getting a little bit of diversity through there. And the sodium is quite low despite the added salt, like seventy five milligrams in this jar compared to the bigger which advertised as a light option one hundred and thirty six milligrams per tablespoon in the Biger.

Speaker 2

One, it's got almost double, So it definitely.

Speaker 1

Ticks all of the boxes. And I think a little bit of added salt in your diet is fine if you're healthy, you have a mostly whole food diet. I wouldn't even be concerned about that for my client Susie, so.

Speaker 2

I would not worry if a peanut butter has got a little bit of added salt. That's a really good point, I agree. And it's just interesting that even though it's got it added, it's still less than the other brand, so it's certainly a minimal amount going through the kind.

Speaker 1

Of percent Yep, we like it. And then the final one is a good little Aussie brand Sanitarium. So we've got our Sanatarium natural crunchy peanut butter made from one hundred percent peanuts. So this one was a lower price at Wolws. It wasn't on sale. They've just naturally reduced their price and kept it a little bit lower. Is their sort of promise or their marketing spend. So three dollars fifty to three hundred and seventy five grams, So

from a budget perspective, I think this one's excellent. It's five style hous rating as well, which is good because the ingredients are one hundred percent roasted peanuts, so no added salt, no added sugar. It's great. I can't fault it.

Speaker 2

Like what it says. I've never seen this before. I delabel Sanitariums are fantastic food company with big fans, but it says made in Australia from zero percent Australian ingredients because the peanuts are coming from overseas. I've never seen a label say that. Being honest, now, we haven't got enough peanuts yet, no peanuts in Australia.

Speaker 1

One hundred percent roasted peanuts and the ingredient label, which is exactly what we want to see when it's it's marketed as a natural peanut butter. It's a crunchy one, which I've chosen crunchy susy because that's my preference when it comes to peanut butter.

Speaker 2

Me too. I'm crunchy all the whalien, all the way.

Speaker 1

I've got waste macrors on that. I'm one hundred percent the crunchy girl. I could eat crunchy out of the jar with the spoon. It's delicious. And then looking at the serving size, it's twenty grams, which is roughly a tablespoon depending how heavy handed you are and quantity per serving.

Nutrition wise, we've got five hundred and sixteen kilogills five point nine grams of protein, so the prot the Mavor's one was higher due to the addition of peanut flour as well, So we're adding a more concentrated form of peanuts in there, which drove up the protein and the fiber profile as well, which is quite good. So protein a little bit lower, but still good, nearly six grams per tablespoom that is nine point nine grams with one

point two of that being saturated. Calbs are two point three grams with sugars naturally occurring at zero point nine grams. So all in all, I would use it. I would

recommend it. I have my clients. It tastes very good as well, and it doesn't get as much separation as I find some of the Mavor's ones get like I love Mavas, I use it, I recommend it, but it really annoys me how there's so much oil separation and you try to stir it and it's so dense at the bottom it just flows over the jar, and you guys, me insane. So I quite like this product.

Speaker 2

I don't disagree. And that's the sort of thing when you get sort of fresh whole ingredients, in particular the seeds which are quite unstable. You know, it does mean you've got this sort of fresh product which is almost like dairy. You know, it's fresh and changing, and you're right. I find with my Mavers I have to eat and use it in the house quite quickly to try and sort of get the best freshness of it, rather than

leaving it sit there. Whereas I do notice with something like this, which is a very strong product, nutritionally, you can keep it longer at home because it doesn't have that effect, and it is, you know, as clean as it comes. It's one hundred percent peanuts. You know it tastes good. Sanitarium is a fantastic astrain brand, and I think you know it's a fantastic price point as well, leanne So I think again, different streets for different folk.

You know, you might love the runniness and that texture of Mavors or be using it in making protein balls, which for which it's fantastic because it bakes really well into that product. Or you might be someone who likes a thicker, kind of heavier peanut butter on your toast and has such you would use this, or you know, had the peanut butter for longer. You might not have

teenage boys or kids in the home. So if you buy peanut butter, it's got the last three or four months well for you that this is probably going to be a better product because it will be a bit more shelf stable good points.

Speaker 1

All right, Well that was pretty quick and easy, Susie. Big peanut butter fans here at the nutrition cat and two which tick all of our boxes.
