Oh my gosh, yeah. So I have always been super driven as a person. I don't know if any of the listeners are as well. But they wanted more, whatever their nine to five was, it just wasn't good enough. And I had my nine to five, I was working with my dad, I had my own businesses on the side, side hustles whatever form that was at the time. And I was just burned out, I was so overwhelmed. I was never following through, I was not permitted. I wanted everything.
But there was something that was constantly holding me back from actually doing that last step. Whether it was my fear of success, which I've now identified, whether it was me not being able to keep track of my time, there was just so much vagueness in my life. I didn't feel like I was achieving, I was here to achieve. And I didn't feel like I was actually going to bed at the end of the day happy. I couldn't remember the last time I fell asleep, satisfied and happy and was so
lit up about my day. And that's when I knew that I just had to change I had to step out of trying to do it all and just focus on my passion.
This is The MindShift Podcast where we share real stories, real strategies that will help you find real success. This is the place to hear from people just like you who have taken their ideas, goals and dreams from a point of inspiration to realization or when life knock them down from a point of breakdown to breakthrough. I'm your host Darrell Evans. Let's get started with today's episode.
Hey, everyone, welcome to another episode of The MindShift Podcast. I'm super excited to have you here if this happens to be our first time meeting. My name is Darrell Evans. I am your host. And in today's conversation, I'm super excited to have with me, Abi Kinghan. She is a serial entrepreneur in her 20s. And she has actually figured out how to juggle it all some of those things that we as entrepreneurs who've been around like me, 30 years are still trying to figure
it out. Listen, she's overcome the hurdles of leaving her safe nine to five jobs starting her first businesses alone, like many of us have done and she's learned some hard lessons along the way, many of which could have shortcut her journey to the life of her dreams. But all that being said, now she runs her solopreneur to CEO coaching business called Impact paid. Her goal is to teach others how to create impact within a work life balance without FOMO and we all
know what that is. She's also the host of the overscheduled millennial masterclass you guys listen, this is a 22 day masterclass series, where she's bringing in experts and thought leaders to really help those solopreneurs and wannabe X nine to fivers. Step out and take charge of their business and their life while creating the life and abundance they desire. Abi, welcome to the show.
Thank you so much.
This is gonna be fun. I'm super excited to talk to a millennial in the world of entrepreneurship. And let's dive in quickly with just tell everybody about your backstory and background. How'd you get here?
Yeah, so I, I started my first business when I was probably around 17,18. I've always wanted to help people. And where my dad's always been an entrepreneur, I never wanted to go to uni, I always wanted to do something different. I never saw this nine to five job to invest my whole life in as a journey for me. I could see other people's parents struggling in their whole lives, living paycheck to paycheck, and then retiring and living off of this pension that the government
gave them. I just always thought that there was something different like that I was destined for more that there was more of a purpose for life. So my first business was actually printing children's clothing and selling it which I managed to get a stall straightaway. I was we'd literally just started the business get a store at the biggest shopping center in Europe, I managed to actually sell there for I think it was around three months, which was a major learning curve for me. I
had no idea what I was doing. I knew that the opportunity was there. And I just had to jump in and take it. And then a few years later, people started asking, like how do I manage my business? How do I get customers? How do I actually understand what the customer
wants? So impact Bay was unofficially born a few years ago, which now brings us to today where I help entrepreneurs solopreneurs actually step out of being chained to the desk and embrace the growth embrace the change and the risks that you get with entrepreneurialism and the abundance that you get to have with it.
Nice Tell us about your work life before you made the jump.
Oh my gosh, yeah. So I have always been super driven as a person, I don't know if any of the listeners are as well. But they wanted more, whatever their nine to five was, it just wasn't good enough. And I had my nine to five, I was working with my dad, I had my own businesses on the side, side hustles whatever form that was at the time. And I was just burnt out, I was so overwhelmed. I was never following through, I was not permitted. I wanted
everything. But there was something that was constantly holding me back from actually doing that last step. Whether it was my fear of success, which I've now identified, whether it was me not being able to keep track of my time, there was just so much vagueness in my life, I didn't feel like I was achieving what I was here to achieve. And I didn't feel like I was actually going to bed at the end of the day happy. I couldn't remember the last time I fell asleep, satisfied and happy and
was so lit up about my day. And that's when I knew that I just had to change, I had to step out of trying to do it all. And just focus on my passion,
You know, for a lot of stuff that I can think about. And I share a common ground with you in that I started my first business at 20. And so I definitely kind of understand where you're going with this. Let me ask you this, you're in your 20s still a long road to go. What would you say? And that's probably my message for you. And many of the other millennial entrepreneurs listening is you do have some time on this journey. Right? Yeah, a lot of times, we just
want to go go go. But congratulations on taking the leap. Let me ask you this question. What was the hardest thing when you decided to leave the nine to five about starting an entrepreneurial journey?
Well, I'll start with the easiest thing, the easiest thing was reframing my mind from the space that this nine to five, what's the safest option, because now looking back, that's the riskiest option. And I feel like we've learned that in the past two years, that businesses will do whatever they need to do to survive, and you can be cut just
like that. So the hardest thing for me was actually managing what I was to do in my day, where I've always been told whether it's from my dad and his business, whether it was from my nine to five, you always were working on this task that someone was giving you. So the hardest thing for me was to actually plan ahead, like think what was gonna come in in the next couple of months? What do I need to do, and start using a goal based system rather than a
task based system? And that completely changed the game when I did that.
That's such a great point, goal based versus task based such a big, big Distinction. Congratulations on that.
Thank you.
What would you say is the trap that many entrepreneurs in their 20s fall into, will get into this idea of over scheduling. But what is one of those things that is a time suck, it's dangerous. And one of those things you had to maybe overcome?
Yeah, and it was a thought it wasn't actually an experience, it was just a thought of, I'm going to start my job at 18. Or whatever time I'm going to work for them for 10 years get to where I want to be, then I'm going to want to start a family. And then what I have to choose between family or that I'm going to have to give it up, I'm going to have to put everything into my child, I'm going to lose my identity, I'm going to lose my purpose. And I
just did not want to do that. So what changed was, I decided to embrace the change now get messy now learn the lessons. Now, while I still had a roof over my head, while I still had everything that I still had that safety, I had that safety net, that I didn't have a mortgage, I didn't have a family to provide
for. So the thought was getting it done getting to know what I wanted to do, finding my passion, monetizing it, figuring out a way while I still had this 10 year buffer, and then it would already be set up by the time I have a family rather than me trying to scramble and do everything and decide what I'm going to do and where I'm going to spend my time. Every day when it was just too much the thought was too much, let alone the actual practice.
Yeah, it was really that that thought initially that hey, I can see my future and it's gonna end up causing me to make a decision and a distinction. I'm just gonna address it now while I have the cushion. I think about the work that you do, I think about where I was some 30 years ago at this point in the same conversation. And we think about this cushion, right. I don't have the mortgage, I don't have all the bills, but still, some will have that entrepreneurial calling, and they won't accept
it. Hmm. What do you think it is that holds them back?
Well, this is something that I work through with my clients then you can give them as many strategies as they like, but instead of just giving them the strategy of saying Get on with it now just take the leap jump implement it, you have to really find out what the root causes. And that's something that takes time. And it's an ever growing experience that you actually have to work with to manage your time to get to where you want to be to take that leap into
entrepreneurialism. So it's really finding out what the root causes. So for me, it was the fear of success, what would it look like? It's the unknown. And really working through that, and finding that it's okay, it's safe, whatever stage of owning your own business that you're at, you're still going to have to take risks, you're going to have to get uncomfortable. So let's, that kind of conditioned you into taking miniature risks and getting comfortable with getting uncomfortable, basically.
Get comfortable with getting uncomfortable.
Yes.
I love it. Can you tell everyone a little bit about your fitness journey? I know we talked as we got to meet, and you had an interesting fitness journey.
Yes, I did always strive to do more and to do better and to try new things. And I've always been that type of person. So I actually went to a pole dancing class with my friend, we're into all these crazy fitness, like exercises and classes. And she just said come along. So I was like, okay, something new, something uncomfortable, might as well
step into it. And so I started pole dancing, and eventually, they needed some help, I actually stepped up to be a coach, I put myself forward, and then a few years down the line. And now I'm actually coaching pole dancing, which I find is a massive stretch, because you need that mental game. It's a whole it's a whole mindset thing. Again, you need to know that you are like striving for more, you can fail, you can fall you can hurt yourself, but it's
the getting up that counts. It's that are you willing to keep continuing? Are you willing to risk that? That injury, that embarrassment, that humiliation, and I think pole dancing is a massive, massive area in my life that has given me that push, and that has given me that strength and courage and everything that you need, again, to start a business. It's really given me that trial and error experience.
And I would love for everyone who hasn't done it any of your listeners to really embrace a stretch, whatever the stretch is, if it's to go to a pole dancing class, if it's to sign up for six months coaching, if it's to do whatever, and just really get out there, play big and see what happens. Because nine times out of 10 In my experience, you'll want to keep going you won't want to be that person who's just given up on that first try, you'll want to keep trying to get better and
just moving forward. And I think my pole dancing journey and fitness journey has made me realize that
What's the biggest injury you've had to overcome with pole fitness?
Oh, gosh, embarrassment probably is Yeah.
Okay. So the fall wasn't the pain, it
was the embarrassment. And just to be like, You know what that happened? I messed up, I messed up big. Let's just carry on.
You know, it's interesting, you talked about fitness. And my world of fitness certainly didn't cross pole fitness. But I find that in entrepreneurship, what I've gotten from fitness after my playing sports days in high school, and even playing through post high school is that the idea of sports and fitness, they really parallel to entrepreneurship, you said it earlier, every level of fitness will stretch you if you're in your comfort zone, you're not doing it right is what I've
learned. And in business very much you are dealing with stress. And I think a fitness you are in some level of stress. Again, as you mentioned, it may be mental stress, that you are trying to stretch yourself to overcome the fear that you may fall that you may hurt your shoulder, land on your head, whether it's other things like I'm a runner, now at 51 years old, 50 years old, I started running for the first time I ever got flat feet like that doesn't seem to make a lot of
sense. And I did it because of the pandemic. But the reality is you've got to stretch yourself. And I find it to be a very, it's very synonymous with business because you don't grow a business if you just stay comfortable, right? Yeah. And you take on stress and risk in business. And so if you don't have another area of your life where you can sort of have an opportunity to handle stress, I find it just very interesting, at least in my journey. So very, I thought that was very
interesting. And I saw that in your background with the pole fitness. So talk to us about this idea of over scheduling, what are we over scheduling, and burning ourselves out with today in our 20s as entrepreneurs and by the way, if you're not 20 listening to this, you're probably still doing some of these things. So what are some of those things that we're we're over scheduling?
Yeah. So from my experience, all I have seen my clients people around me in my life generally, they try and do one thing to the max weather that'd be work wherever that be relaxing, wherever It'd be one thing or another. And they don't have this balance that works for them. A lot of people are creating systems as well that are totally new, implement a morning routine, implement this, implement that. But it's really about getting to know the person
and when they function best. So the overscheduling might look like to one person, I'm really productive in the evening, that's when I'm going to have my deep work, getting done and everything like that. But to another person, it might be get up at 5am, make a cup of tea, go for a run, and start your day. And that's this blog and the overscheduling really comes into what do you want out of your life? What is your goal? How do we get you there? And how does your calendar reflect that? How
does your time reflect that? And I do have a freebie for you guys. And I'll go into that in a little bit. But it is about really getting clear on where you're spending your time. Where do you want to spend your time? What do you actually want out of your life? Because if your time that you're spending in an average day isn't reflecting what you want? Why are you doing it? If you're gonna get unhappy,
why are you doing it? let's reframe figure out what the root causes why you're actually creating 24 hours a day of work and nothing else. But you're desperate to meet that person, you're desperate to fall in love, you're not actually going to get it. So it's all about reframing, reevaluating, because a lot of people I think did in the pandemic, reflect on where they're spending their time and what they're spending their time
doing. But again, I can see people falling back into old habits and just kind of getting comfortable again. And the worst thing for me is I don't want anyone to wake up one day and think, oh, my gosh, I've wasted my life. You hear about it people on their deathbed saying I haven't done what I wanted, I need more time. Our time is now we only get one life. And it actually last night really hit me I was watching the new Jumanji. And they have three
lives on their arm. And when they die, they lose a life and our thinking, of course three lives really isn't that many like, they've down to one life, Everyone's panicking. But we only have one life. Wow. So why make yourself overscheduled in every area of your life that you don't want, and it doesn't make you happy. When you actually you want to start a business. Okay, so how can we start your business? You want to find that one person that you can spend the rest of your life with? How
do we get you to that. And it's all about figuring out and reevaluating your time so that you don't wake up one day and regret it at least you've tried. You are putting yourself out there in whatever form that is, and get into the goals that you actually want to get to.
Wow, you're just speaking to the power of intention, like let's set. Let's figure out yeah, what would I really want design your dream life, I learned something in my 20s. And it was called Dream building. And dream building wasn't necessarily this idea of this fantasy land thing. But it was a practice of visualizing the ideas and dreams of what you want in your life. And I think it goes back to what you're saying. You're saying Be intentional, if you're feeling
some kind of way. Recognize that and understand that that's a place where you can evaluate. I know for me when I left my nine to five, if you want to call, you know, when I finally made the leap, it was like, you know, I was able to visualize what I wanted. And I was able to say this, isn't it. Now, the journey leading up to that point, I was blessed that I had that journey. I was blessed that I learned all the things I was blessed at the experience. I was blessed at the
opportunity. But I realized that I was able to clearly identify that this isn't it. And so, but it is fearful, right? What do you say to the person who's still holding the nine to five? And they've got this sort of they're like, Okay, Abi, I'm with you. And by the way, whether you're millennial, whether your ex whether you're Boomer, this applies to you, right, you're maybe still holding on that nine to five and you've got this thing in you and
you feel it. Like you can tell in your gut you can tell in your spirit, you can tell in your soul. What do you say the person's still holding on to that nine to five who's just afraid to let go?
Oh my gosh, yes, I would tell that person that it is 100% intention. mechanism. Is there a percent you can find if you want to go on holiday to wherever and you're so committed to it, its commitment and intention and you can make it work. The mechanism isn't important. It's purely commitment and intention. I'd like to isn't the same as I will move heaven and earth to make this happen. I am so committed
to making this happen. And just pouring everything in your being into that commitment with your intention using your intention. That's what I would say to that person.
You My gosh, such a great set of words. One of my mentors says it this way that says just decide the how is none of your business? Oh, they just decide the how is none of your business the How will take care of itself. But until and unless you're willing to make a committed decision, then this wishy washy I my die wavy should I could I would I know just decide and let the universe figure it out for you. But in the absence of commitment and decision, like you said, so I love that idea. Just get
committed. Yes, I am really curious. I'm always curious about a leader and entrepreneur who's willing to be such an abundant giver. When they're in the midst of growing their own business. It is just, first of all, I believe in it. 110% But you're putting together let's talk about the overscheduled millennial masterclass series. It is 22 days of you bringing in different experts and thought leaders to share with your solopreneur and want to be x
nine to fivers audience. I'm really blessed that I was asked to be one of those 22 people. So thank you so much. share with our audience why you decided to put this masterclass series together?
Oh, my gosh, I just, I feel so strongly about stepping into your purpose. Like I've said so many times, I can't imagine for someone to wake up one day realize that they're actually on their deathbed and think they haven't fulfilled their life. And they haven't created that purpose. So a few again, it all starts with that little bird in your ear saying, How did you do it? How have you actually managed to figure this one out? I'd really like to do it. But I don't know how. So I
just thought embrace it. Let's give out this amazing gift of knowledge. Because for me stepping into that entrepreneurial journey, I was so so convinced that I was not having my last year be my next year. And that was literally the only decision I had to have. And we're at that time of year again. Do you want to step into next year? Like you were this year? Last year? COVID, whatever? Or do you want
something else? So I've brought together 22 experts they are talking about everything to do is leaving the nine to five, stepping into your power, how to actually stay confident in your relationships, how to communicate with people, how to build those business relationships, how to get your family on board, there's so much goodness that can be brought with this masterclass, and I just wanted to share it with everyone because for me, it's
incredible. But for everyone else who hasn't even got to that stage or just starting out in their solopreneur journey, entrepreneurial journey. This really can propel them into that next stage that CEO, instead of being that doer, they can delegate, they've got the time they've got the energy, make it count. Like it's really to inspire people to just be and live in their purpose.
You know, I gotta salute you to put together an event of any kind online or offline over a 22 day period of time to coordinate all the speakers to coordinate the legal to coordinate audio to coordinate it all and pull it off is a feet and a half for even seasoned companies who run events. My company being one of them. And you're here you are as a solopreneur pulling it off with team. I know you've got some team. Yeah, but congratulations.
Thank you.
What is the cost of this event?
It's totally free. It's free for everyone.
It's free. Yeah. Unbelievable. Unbelievable. Abi, it's an amazing gift that you are providing. How can people learn more about signing up for the masterclass? Let me ask this. Are there going to be replays? Maybe for people who are listening to this show after the event has passed? How are you going to handle that?
Yeah, so the replays will be live for 72 hours anyway. So if anyone's missed out, they can reach out to me if they jump on on day 20. They can be like, Oh, I've missed data. And don't worry, you can have it, it's totally fine. But in the meantime, if you want to sign up, go to www.theoverschedulemillennial.com. That's where you can put in your name, your phone number, your email address, and you get access immediately. So come the first of December when it's
starting. You will be getting that email in your inbox.
Awesome. So you're gonna leave every day's episode up for 72 hours so that way people can play catch up a little bit. It's gonna span 22 days, which really probably means 25 days. So you've got plenty of time to take advantage of that. If someone misses this recording and they're not around during this time and They really haven't been inspired by what you've said, by your mindset, your thought leadership, I'm inspired by young entrepreneurs.
I think it's just an amazing passion of mine to see more and more young entrepreneurs disappear from the nine to five, and follow their dreams earlier. And I think a lot of times our parents talk us out of it. They say, hey, go to school, get a job, you know, do all this stuff, get good grades. And I'm a believer in that. But I'm also a believer in doing what feels right for you. And so congratulations on that. Where else can people connect with you online?
Yeah, so I'm mainly on Instagram. So if you go to @impact.babe, that's where you can find me. That's where I'll be posting everything to do of the masterclass, and everything else, all the other goodies, I also have a free gift for you. So I'm going to share that with Daryl and you get to go from chaos to clarity with my workbook. And that really gets you evaluating your time where you're spending it. Where do you want to spend it? What do you
want your goals to be? So we can step into this new year all together, get into where we want to be living with purpose. If you want to send me a DM on Instagram, I will get back to you. So @impact.babe
Awesome. Well, everyone listening, we will get all of the links into the show notes so that you can find and connect with Abby, hopefully you're hearing this and are able to be a part of the 22 days series. I guarantee because I've been a part of the series before, as always saying my shift there, you're just one shift away from the breakthrough you're looking for. And Abi has curated 22 people, in addition to herself to really share and give. And so Abi, thank you so much for making that gift
available. It's an absolutely huge gift. I mean, just mind boggling. So congratulations on your journey as an entrepreneur. I know you're going to impact entrepreneurs, and nine to fivers who want to you know, get away and follow their dream, you're going to do some amazing work. So I'm super excited that you were able to take time out of the show. I always ask my guests a final question. And that would be if for whatever reason, you were unable to be here on this planet that we love
so much. Tomorrow. What would you want everyone to remember you for?
Oh my gosh, I think it would just be to inspire commitment and messy action. I think that is just so important because it feeds into every single aspect of your life. If you're starting a business, if you're dating, if you're doing whatever it is just stay true to yourself be aligned. Doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. Stick to your purpose and just do it anyway.
