Liam Naden

So it's the same with your brain, when you understand how it works, you realize fear is the fuel that's putting you in the wrong state. You do everything you can to avoid anything that makes you fearful. So you turn off the news. And sometimes it's big stuff and sometimes it's little stuff. Big stuff, remember, I've had 18 businesses in my life. I'm an entrepreneur too. And I

know the difference. It's about getting rid of that part of your business that isn't working, getting rid of that staff member that you know on a gut level is just the wrong person for the wrong job. But I had salespeople, I used to spend all my time with the ones who were no good. We've all been in that situation and stress and struggle and try and teach around us accepting it's the wrong person for the job. Now why didn't I get rid of them?

While I was worried that I wouldn't find someone else.

And today, my guest has a goal of sharing with others the secrets of how the brain works, and things about it that we've never been taught. How to use the brain the right way, understanding who we really are, and our place in this entire universe. He is the host of the podcast Using Your Brain For

Success. He's the author of Rebalancing Your Brain For Success, the creator of Neural State Rebalancing, a process which automatically gets the four parts of your brain working the right way to bring you the life that you want. Liam is also an experienced marriage and relationship coach, host of the Growing In Love Life Podcast, author of more than 20 books, and a creator of four relationship coaching programs. Welcome to the show, Liam Naden. How're you doing Liam?

Liam Naden

Hi, Darrell. I'm doing very well. Thanks so much for having me on your show. It's a real honor. Looking forward to it.

Darrell Evans

Thank you for being here. This is an incredible honor for me. When we saw your bio and your background, and we had picked out some topics on the show that we had not covered in a rich depth. One of them was brain science and the neural aspects of how we evolve as humans. And you came across our path. I was like, let's have a conversation with this gentleman. First of all, as we jump in, and we were just chatting offline a little bit. Where are you joining us

from? Tell our audience this unique nomadic lifestyle that you have, let's start there.

Liam Naden

Well, actually, I live on a boat and I have done for the last few years and not really based anywhere. We just go where the wind and the weather takes us. And yeah, it's, it's quite a, quite a fun way to live.

Darrell Evans

So yeah, that's interesting. Right, so I live on a boat, seven years or so now, right?

Liam Naden

Yeah, roughly. Yeah.

Darrell Evans

Yeah, we don't have any place to be except where the wind takes us.

Liam Naden

Well you know the funny thing is, when you use your brain the right way, and I'm not saying I'm perfect at it, you know, your life flows in the right direction. You don't need to struggle. And that's what we're going to talk about, I think.

Darrell Evans

Ohhh, jeez, that's such a great way to start

Liam Naden

I always like to go with the current . . this thing off.

Darrell Evans

That's right, go with the flow.

Liam Naden

. . . of least resistance.

Darrell Evans

Absolutely. It's so interesting uou just mentioned that to start us off, because we hear the phrase go with the flow, right, the path of least resistance. And I think today will hopefully uncover how we can all move ourselves back more into alignment so that we can flow with the current.

Before we dive into what I think is going to be a fascinating conversation about the brain, and it's something that I'm just super intrigued about, which is why I wanted to chat with you, introduce yourself to our audience, give them a little bit of your backstory, and how you got here to be this sort of brain expert, this neuro expert. Let's start there.

Liam Naden

Okay, well, I've pretty well all my life like most of your listeners, I've been somewhat interested in being the best that I can be, and studying all sorts of things from personal development, self help, self improvement, and religion, philosophy, psychology, spirituality, all of these things. I've acquired lots of different things, but I had a bit of a life changing moment in my mid 40s when I lost

everything. I went from doing really well, being a multimillionaire having the outward trappings of success, to literally losing everything, becoming homeless, virtually overnight, and I had to move back in with my elderly mother and sleep on the sofa in her living room of her small apartment. She was in her 70s. I had to watch her go to work to earn money just to pay for my food. I mean, that's how bad it

was. But actually, out of that came something really interesting, because although it was a rough experience, obviously, what I noticed after I rebuilt my life, or as my life started to unfold, after that experience, is that things were going in quite a different direction. And what I'd noticed before, so I started to rebuild my life, and I started to set up

new businesses. But whereas before, I'd always chased after success, and really struggled to overcome problems, try and figure everything out, try and understand more, gather more information, set bigger goals for myself, and never really be happy or never really be in control of my life. And dealing with lots of problems and stress. Things were quite different after my so called New Life, because it was almost like success was coming after me. I wasn't chasing success, it was

chasing me. So new opportunities started to come along to set up new businesses. And they were doing things that I really love to do. Sometimes I wasn't even aware of it until it was actually happening that, hey, this is something I didn't realize how much I've enjoyed doing this. And people started to the show up in my life, by coincidence it would seem, or luck, who would come to me and say, Hey, here's an idea. Why don't you do this? And here's an opportunity, why don't you do

that? And things started to fit together in a much, much easier way. And also, I was coming up with better ideas. And I'd come up with inspirational ideas on what to do or how to do something. And everything seemed to just work in a much better way. And one of the best things of all was, I really didn't have any problems or stress, I noticed, in this new life. You know, it wasn't like, I used to wake up dreading opening my

email in the morning. And I used to go to bed at night thinking about all the problems I had to deal with and thinking how am I going to fix that? Whether it was in my businesses, you know, what am I going to do with that staff member, or I've got a problem with this supplier or in this contract, or this deal I'm doing or, and it was just this constant struggle with problems. In fact, it was to the point where I thought this is natural, because isn't it true that problems are natural or struggle

is natural? Isn't it true, that it's all good for you and you grow, and you learn by overcoming struggle and achieving in the face of great hardship. So you know, if you want to be successful, that's just part of the game is dealing with problems.

Darrell Evans

Right.

Liam Naden

So I really thought that was true. With this new post losing everything life. I thought one day, you know, I don't really have any problems, I don't have any stress. I wake up in the mornings looking forward to the day. I go to bed at night, really grateful for what an amazing day I'd had and being excited about what the next day might bring. And I really didn't have any problems or stress. Sure, I had to deal

with things. It wasn't like I was doing nothing and sitting back and all this good stuff was coming to me. I was putting in effort, but it was, if you like, joyful effort, really enjoyable, what I was doing. So what I said to myself was, I need to figure out what I'm doing differently. What's the difference here? Because I don't want to stop doing it. I want to make sure I keep doing this because this

Darrell Evans

Right. is really good. This is what life I always, deep down in my heart thought that life should be like, where you feel in control of your life. Where life's an adventure, not a struggle. And where what you do actually works. And you don't have to constantly deal with unexpected problems. So I thought I need to figure this out. And I went on a bit of a mental journey to back engineer

what I was doing. And I thought, you know, I've got all of this knowledge, all of this information from spirituality and personal development and self help and religion and all of this. I've done all the goal setting workshops, I've been to seminars all around the world. I've read books, done courses, listened to things that help you change your subconscious mind or change your beliefs or write down your goals and

affirmations. I had so much of this knowledge, but it really didn't help me or prevent me from losing everything. So I've got all this, how can I put all this together and figure out what I'm doing that is actually working? And I thought well, I'm going to put all of that aside. And I'm going to start from the beginning with the question: Maybe I'm what I need to know first is Who am I and why am I

here? And I thought well, many people have tried to answer that question and everyone's got a different opinion or a different viewpoint on who we might be. But I thought there's one thing we can all agree on. Doesn't matter who you are. You can't deny the fact that you exist in a physical body in a physical world. It might not be all what we are. But we have a physical body, we're breathing, we're alive, and there's a natural

world that we're a part of. So maybe there's something in the physical world that can give me a clue as to who I am and what I'm doing here. So I thought, What is the purpose then, of my physical life, of my biological life? And funnily enough, Biological Science will all tell you the same answer if you ask that question. There is a purpose to life and there is a purpose to your biological life, it's the same for everything that's alive. And that is, the purpose of your existence is to

survive. That pretty much is the purpose of life, is to survive. Well, that sort of made sense, because the more you survive, the more nature carries on if you like, the more the human species, or any species carries on. And then I thought, well, what gives us the greatest chance to survive. And again, biological science has the answer to that. You, along with every other living thing, has your best chance of survival

when you're at your best. So therefore, being at your best is actually your purpose biologically, because the better you are, the more chance you have of living your biological purpose of surviving. So you can see on a very practical biological level, every living thing, their purpose is to be the best, so that they have the greatest chance of surviving. And of course, being your best, we often call it thriving, you

know, survive and thrive. But for humans, being your best doesn't just mean physically, because we're not just talking physical survival in terms of being your strongest so you fight off enemies or disease or you recover from injury more effectively, or you recover from disease more effectively. It also means being your best mentally, emotionally, and

spiritually. In other words, when you're feeling your best, because when you're at your best mentally and emotionally, that's when you're your most resourceful, your most creative. It's when you contribute the most, it's when you're the most loving. And it turns out, that's when you're feeling the best as well, when you're feeling your happiest. So in a really strange sort of way, it sounds a bit ironic, but our biological purpose is actually to be happy.

It's to be the best that we can be, the most fulfilled that we can be, and to be happy, because that gives you the greatest chance of survival. So I thought, well hang on a second, there's a couple of things that come out of this. One is, why aren't most people happy? If this is our biological purpose, we're supposed to be happy, then why does nearly everybody have stress and problems, and literally aren't being happy. And so I thought, well, another clue is what has nature

provided? If that's the purpose of biological life is to be the best that it can be, so that it has the greatest chance of surviving, and for humans, because we have an emotional and mental and spiritual component, that means being happy, what has nature provided, what mechanisms has it provided to ensure that could happen because it wouldn't make sense for life just to exist without the evolution or whatever you want to call it of the mechanisms to ensure, or to strive for, that organism being

the best that it can be. And it turns out, every living organism has a mechanism whose sole purpose is to make it the best that it can be, to give it the greatest chance of survival. And that mechanism, of course, is the brain. The brain's sole purpose is to ensure that you survive to the best of your ability, which means being the best that you can be. So your brain, every creatures brain, is constantly working to ensure that organism is the best that

it can be. And the human brain is designed, and it's constantly trying to make us the best that we can be emotionally and mentally and spiritually as well. It's trying to make us happy. That's what it's designed to do. It's literally a machine designed to give us a happy and fulfilling life being the best that we can be. So I thought this is all quite interesting stuff. Yeah. Wow, a lot to unpack there. So let me go back to the time when you lost

it all, right? So clearly what you've just given us this broad rainbow of the journey of this, this physical purpose, biological purpose that leads to the brain. And when we talk about this balancing and how to get the brain back on for success, what have you learned about that moment of disaster or setback or failure that where you lost everything, you said, though I had done all the work spiritually and done all the work personal development wise, it didn't prevent me from losing

everything. What have you learned from that moment? What was wrong at that moment? Like what didn't prevent you from losing it all?

Liam Naden

The difference was, and it's actually biological how the brain works. But to answer your question, the difference was, how I was using my brain and the shift is based around fear. Fear is the mechanism that stops you from living your ideal life. It prevents your brain from operating the right way. And it's a purely biological mechanism and I hope I can explain how the brain works and

how it does this. But that's literally it was the difference what happened to me and I didn't really realize it at the time. But when I back engineered, I thought, aha, that's, that is the difference. And now I understand biologically, why that's the case.

Darrell Evans

What were you afraid of? What did you learn that you were afraid of?

Liam Naden

Well, that's the funny thing isn't it? The two things I was afraid of, which are probably what most people are afraid of, and remember, I wasn't aware of this.

Darrell Evans

Sure.

Liam Naden

It had been driving my life until my mid 40s. And it had caused all the problems in my life. The things I was afraid of? Firstly, of having nothing, of losing everything. And that's what had continually driven me to seek more, to make set higher goals and never be happy with what I had.

Darrell Evans

Interesting.

Liam Naden

Always need more and more and more and read more books and go to more courses and learn more and, but when it's all based on fear, all you're going to do is create problems.

Darrell Evans

Wow!

Liam Naden

It's never going to give you the results that you want. And of course, what did I experience? The one thing I was afraid of, losing everything.

Darrell Evans

100% Wow.

Liam Naden

And the other thing was, afraid of not being loved. And that drove me into the wrong relationships, you know, with the people weren't appropriate for me, not just personal relationships, but business relationships as well, because it's that approval, that love, that acceptance, but I was afraid that I would lose. And of course, I lost all that as well. And one of the most important things that I teach these days, how to help people to uncover what it is they're subconsciously afraid of.

Because if your life has an undercurrent of fear, one thing that's going to be for sure is you're going to have problems in your life. And because it's how you're using your brain, it's a biological machine. As I say, we'll explain how and why that works. If you've got problems in your life, it's because you're operating from an undercurrent of fear. And that's what you

need to get rid of. That's the foundation that will unleash the part of you that is there, the part of your brain that is really in waiting to do its job to give you an amazing life. It's what it's job is to do.

Darrell Evans

Liam, that's so interesting. I know someone listening on the other side of this, I can think back to when I lost everything 2008. And you're saying that there was an undercurrent of fear that was likely one of the causes, or likely a catalyst, or at least assisted, right? And I think back to . . .

Liam Naden

Yeah.

Darrell Evans

. . . yeah. And I think back to what was going through my mind in '07 leading to '08, obviously, back then anyone who was around in the real estate and financial services world, economic Wall Street world knows what happened. And it's interesting, because I identify with what you're describing leading up to the loss. And I also identify with the days after the loss in that there was no more weight. It was interesting, because when you lose it all, there's nothing

else to carry. There's no burdens to carry.

Liam Naden

Absolutely.

Darrell Evans

And I think back to and I don't think you know this, there's no way you could know this, but there was a time when I was living on my grandmother's couch.

Liam Naden

Right.

Darrell Evans

There's no way you knew that, right? It's just very interesting. That was a earlier season. But anyway, that's very interesting. So fear is one of those mechanisms. And so all of the personal development and all of the chasing the spirituality of the law of attraction, could in fact, not just be because we say we're growth driven, or that we're always trying to be at our best. In a way that's what the brain is trying to get us to do. But you're saying we're maybe chasing it out of fear of

losing. Oh, that's interesting. Oh, geez, that's interesting. So, Liam, you talk about not just using your brain for success, but there's this idea of neuro state rebalancing. What are we doing on a daily basis to take us out of balance from this natural biological rhythm and desire of our biology to lead us in the right direction? Because so many of us struggle with, whether it's success or not success, everyone has their own

definition of that. But there's no reason to rebalance unless we somehow are getting out of balance. What are we doing to ourselves that we don't actually recognize, that takes us out of balance?

Liam Naden

We're using our brain the wrong way. Because the brain, firstly, it's the most powerful machine that exists on the planet, probably in the universe, and there'd be many books, and they're all written about the brain, they all come to that same conclusion. It's vastly more powerful than any computer system. You know, they did an experiment a few years ago, where they compared a supercomputer in Japan, it was the fourth largest supercomputer

in the world at the time. And they carried out an experiment to see how long it would take for it to do the neural activity that your brain does in one second. One second of human neural activity, and it took this computer 40 minutes to do it. So your brain is just so much more vastly powerful. And if we realized how powerful the brain was, we'd start to want to know how to use it. Because the other thing is, even though it's vastly powerful, and remember, its purpose is to give you an

ideal life. You've got at your disposal, the most powerful computer network on the planet whose sole job is to know everything about you, everything about what you want, everything about what you need, and it knows how to get it for you. That's its biological job. And it's perfectly designed to do that. Here's the other thing about the brain, even though that is its job, and it's so powerful, it is just a machine. And you know, if you have a motorcar, for instance, that's a

machine. You know, it has a specific purpose, it's to get you from where you are to where you want to go. And you know it's going to do that. And it'll be efficient. It'll be a smooth ride for you, predictable, it's going to get you there. All of those things without struggle, if you use it the right way, if you know how to drive it the right way. And if you use it the

right way. You know, so your son comes along, your 12 year old son and says, Can I borrow the car tomorrow night to go to a party, so well you have to learn how to drive it, it's not going to get you there if you don't have to drive it. But you know, our brain the most powerful machine of all time, no one's ever said to us, well, if you want to get to where you want to go, you have to know how to drive this machine. It's designed to get you there. So

this is the problem. And this is why most people, because we don't understand what our brain is, we don't even know that it's a machine. We don't even know what its purpose is, what it's designed to do. And we certainly don't know how to use it the right way. So we just pick up these ideas about life is hard and life is a struggle, and you have to learn more, and you have to read a book a day, and you have to go on all these courses. And you have to set all these

goals. And I'm not saying there's anything wrong with any of that. But if you haven't worked out how to use the machine the right way, then it's what happens with the machine when it's not used the right way? Creates problems, and stress and struggle. It's a bit like saying I don't know how to use the car, but I see that it's got four wheels, perhaps I

should get out and push. Maybe that's how and you get behind the wheel, this enormous effort and struggle, and you're determined, you're motivated, you're believing, I will do this. What happens? You just get worn out and exhausted, and you don't get anywhere near the results you want. So it's the same with your brain, it's this perfect machine, which, and it's not that hard to know how to use it.

Darrell Evans

Yeah. Liam, I love the analogy because anybody listening to this, who's ever run out of gas or had some sort of disablement in the vehicle, electronically, battery, whatever the case is, you know, the first thing we have to do is if we're stuck in a place, we have to put it in neutral, get out and push the thing and then run and jump into the front seat to turn it. I know someone listening to this can identify with that story, right? But that's the hard way to operate the vehicle, right?

Liam Naden

It's all struggle, we're not here to struggle. There's no struggle in the natural world. There's life, death, decay, growth, but there's no struggle, we're not supposed to struggle.

Darrell Evans

So if we're doing it wrong, let's help the listening audience understand how to drive this machine better. I'm with the analogy, I love it. We need to know how to drive this car, the most powerful car that's been given to us. How do we begin? I know we can't uncover and unpack the entire process. But how do we begin to operate this magnificent thing called a brain better?

Liam Naden

Well, I will give you the entire process because it's not that complicated, funnily enough. You know, we think the brain must be really complicated. And there's the mind and the subconscious, and all this sort of stuff and all the technical terms. What I've actually done is I've drawn this all together and created a model for the brain in very simple terms, which explain how your brain works. And it's a bit like

a motorcar. You don't need to know what every wire does, or every little bolt or bit, you just need to know a few things on how to use it. And that's the beauty of the brain, it's designed for us to be able to use it naturally, we don't have to be the greatest genius in the world. Although, if we realize how powerful our brain is, we'd realize we're all geniuses just by being here. We don't need to

know all the technical stuff. So what I'll give your listeners, just a quick introduction, or an overview of how your brain works. And I think people will see quite clearly and quickly how they're using it the wrong way and how to use it the right way. And that's the beauty of it. So, is that right?

Darrell Evans

Oh, please, by all means, I'm ready.

Liam Naden

Okay. So essentially, your brain is this complicated thing, but it has four basic parts. And I call it

Darrell Evans

Right. the four parts of your brain. So the first part is what I call the thinking brain. Remember, this is all physical. This isn't a an airy fairy idea. This is a physical function that take place in the part of your brain near the top of your head. It's

the thinking brain. And what the thinking brain does, is in every second of your life, every bit of information that comes to you from your environment, whether it's through your five senses, so what ever you see, smell, taste, touch, or hear and any idea or thought that you get. This comes into your thinking brain and is stored there, like in a vast library or database. So that's what it is. It's basically a library of every experience, every bit of information you've gathered

throughout your life. That's in your thinking brain. The second part of your brain is your feeling brain, your emotional brain. And this is actually located just below the thinking brain inside your head. And this is the part that obviously creates our emotions and determines how we feel. It decides how we feel, whether it's really good emotions, or negative emotions such as fear,

stress, worry. And it does that by producing chemicals, which we know as hormones or neurotransmitters that when they're released into the body, they make you feel a certain way, that's all handled by the feeling brain, the emotional brain. The third part of your brain is what I call the survival brain. And this is at the back of the head. And what the survival brain does, this handles everything to do with

your survival. So everything you don't have to think about such as your physical survival, your breathing, your heart rate, all of the organs, all these things, this is all just managed automatically by your survival brain, everything to do with pure survival. And there's one really important function, which is misused, which is at the heart of using the brain the wrong way, actually, and I'll explain why shortly. But there's a really important function in the survival brain that is part

of our survival. And that is to deal with an immediate threat or danger that might come unexpectedly into your life. So while you're living your life whatever your brain is designed to make you the best that you can be when it's operating perfectly. But every now and then that might be something that comes along, like we talk about in prehistoric times, you're walking in the forest, and the lion jumps out at you from behind the rock. So there's an immediate threat, an immediate danger to your

survival. Your brain has a mechanism to deal with that, and that's contained in your survival brain. And it activates this thing that we sometimes call the fight, flight, freeze response. And we react, and we do whatever it takes, there and then, without thinking, to get rid of that threat, or danger. So we might find ourselves shouting for help or running away, or standing to fight. And, you know, getting all the strength that we didn't know we

had to fight off an attacker. So this is all managed by the survival brain, absolutely brilliant for what it is, to get rid of an immediate threat or danger, so that you carry on surviving, obviously. Now, the fourth part of the brain, this is only more recently become identified as a separate part of the brain. And it has a separate function. And it operates in a separate way. And it's what I

call the creative brain. And this is the part of your brain that actually runs the show, when you're in your ideal thriving state. Because this part of your brain is where your intuition comes from. It's where your inspiration comes from. It's where you get those new ideas, those creative ideas. It's also where you make the right decisions, and you stop making the wrong decisions. Because you get that gut feeling, or you know the right thing to do, and you do it. Because this part also has your

motivation. So you not only know the right thing to do, but you find yourself that you're actually doing it. So you become enormously productive when you're in your natural creative state, using your creative brain as the driver. And this is you being in the zone, as is sometimes described. This is your natural state. In fact, science has a word for the state, and it's called homeostasis. And homeostasis means the perfect functioning of

the organism. So it's when you're functioning perfectly for your thriving state, if you like. But the other thing about the creative brain because from a very limited level of awareness, and the other thing I should say about the creative brain, it's from a place of expanded awareness. It's where you see the truth about who you are. Sometimes they call it enlightenment, religion has described this state as enlightenment, although that's

only part of it, really. But anyway, you have a much greater awareness of who you are. And one of the things you realize is that all of those things that you thought were coincidence, luck, synchronicity, chance events, chance people coming into your life, they weren't

Liam Naden

is it says, now being in your natural creative chance at all, they were your creative brain. Remember, we're state, we need to just pause that very temporarily because you've got an immediate threat or danger you need to deal with. talking about a computer that has enormous power. Yes, it has So the brain takes all of the resources from everywhere it the power to control your environment to bring the right needs, and it focuses all that energy on getting rid of that people into your life. You

don't! You don't go, I have a danger. And that's why you react. And that's why sometimes people feel superhuman strength, when they're reacting, it's goal that tomorrow morning at nine o'clock, I'm going to meet taking all of their resources to deal with it. And as soon as a woman I'm going to marry. My woman of my dreams. You don't do it's dealt with, the emotional brain goes, Okay, it's all in the clear, go back to being happy in your natural creative

that. But you meet the woman unexpectedly, you go, Oh, I state, there's no danger in your environment, it's all good. wonder how that happens. And you just know, I'm going to marry Because the problem is one of the things that happens when you're in that reactive state. Remember, I said it takes the that person. Or I'm going to buy that house. Whatever it is, you resources from everywhere else, it also shuts down anything that haven't known this, this is all managed by your creative brain.

is not helpful to you to fight off an immediate threat. And So the way you're supposed to live and the way your brain is this is why one of the things that shuts down is your digestion, because the energy you use to digest is a lot of supposed to operate, is that is your natural state, that is the energy that you use to stay alive. And you need that energy you're being in the flow state. That's the way you're supposed to fight the lion. So your digestion actually stops. But

to live all the time. Because that's when you contribute the the other thing that stops is your creative brain. Because you most not only to your own survival, but to the survival of don't need resourcefulness, imagination, creativity, others. Your imaginative, you're creative, you're resourceful, awareness, gratitude, all of those things, when a lion is about to eat you, in fact,

they're harmful. So it actually you're doing things, you're loving, you're grateful, all of literally shuts your access to all of that resourceful state, those things. And anyone will tell you, you know, musicians, when you're dealing with an immediate threat or danger. That's great when you're dealing with an immediate threat or composers describe the state where they, they hear the music danger. But remember the signal from your brain that you are

and they write it down. They don't know where it comes from. dealing with an immediate threat, it is, it creates fear. And all of a sudden, they've created a magnificent symphony It changes the chemicals, and it creates fear. It says danger, or whatever it is, artists have created a beautiful art. We're warning, there's something about to eat you, experience fear, and designed to be creative in the

state. But there's only one time that kicks in the survival state, this reaction state and when you're not supposed to be operating like that. And that is shuts down your creative brain. Now, again, that's great for when you're dealing with a lion. But what happens? Why? What when the lion comes running out of you at the jungle. happens to most people, they're living in that state most of the time?

Darrell Evans

That was actually where I was gonna go, right. So today, we're not fighting lions.

Liam Naden

No.

Darrell Evans

What you're drawing a bridge to is the fact that we must be doing something in our daily lives, that is triggering this fight, flight or freeze state, which is detrimental to our well being, it's shutting down the mechanism that could give us all the happiness, joy, and fulfillment that we want. What is that? What are we doing in our daily life that's causing this undue fear, stress, uncertainty, confusion, and essentially this light switch to a bad function. And it's a bad context, right?

What's triggering that?

Liam Naden

What we're doing is we're teaching our brain, and we have done since the day we were born, we're teaching our brain that there's something in our environment that is dangerous for us. And we do that by what? Watching something about a war on the television, on the other side of the world, and being fed this idea that a bomb dropping is a threat to your survival. Now, you know that logically it's not. But people believe

that it is. They think, Oh, I could be harmed, war might break out and well, the economy goes down, I could become homeless, I might lose everything, I need to make more money. We're continually filled with all this negative information to tell us that life is dangerous and need to feel stressed and anxious and worried about our existence. And when we teach our brain that we live in a dangerous world, even though we don't really. We live in the safest world in history.

Really, there's, as you say, there's no lions, there's no immediate danger to your survival. But if we're continually teaching our brain, our brain has been tricked to thinking that things in your environment could be dangerous to you or harmful to you, it's going to make that connection. And it's going to continually

create fear in your system. And it's going to activate what's called the sympathetic nervous system, which activates this anxiety and fear and worry and blocks off your natural creative abilities. So if you're trying to solve problems, you can never do it in that state when you're feeling fearful and worried because all the problem solving ability that you have, if you're trying to set goals in that state, which is what I used to do. Oh, I need to make more money, I need to do this, I need

to have a bigger house. And that's not going to work. It's just going to create problems and stress because you're not using the part of your brain that not only knows what you really want, which might not be any of those things. It's just what you think you need to be happy. Nobody knows what you really want, but it knows how to get it for you. It's what is there for.

Darrell Evans

Yeah, let me ask you this. So a lot of people listening to this show are entrepreneurs, they're at the edge of the population where they're willing to take risks, which they know comes with possibility of failure and setback and heartache. And so they already do the things that we've talked about here. They are into spirituality in some ways and shape and form, they are reading the books, studying personal development, I think that they are moving in the direction, at least I know I am.

To activate that creative part of the brain that does the best work for us, that helps us become our best selves. But it sounds like despite those efforts, even those of us who are achievers and leaders and people that are trying to drive change and be a positive light in this world, it sounds as though in yourself even back to the days that led up to to your debacle, we still are tripping up on something. I'm trying to

understand. What is it that we can do that would help us avoid that triggering state that takes us out of that creative brain state. So we had the thinking, the feeling, the, the survival brain. And again, a lot of us listening to this, recognize that the news is negative and that, yeah, there is a war going on in this place, or that place. But even those of us who can identify and separate that, we still find ourselves in this

trap. And I'm trying to see if I can get something that I can actually think about in my own cycle of life. Right? What do you say to those of us who are like, we fight that muscle, we try to build that creative muscle on a, on a purposeful journey. But we also find ourselves back in that survival state, that fear state, stress state. So what do you say?

Liam Naden

Okay, well, the most important thing to realize is to understand how the machine works, because I don't think there are many people listening, who worry when they get into a motor car, about whether the machine is going to get them there. So you don't feel stress, fear and worry about that. Because you know how the machine works. You know, what it's designed to do, you know what

the different parts are. And the most important thing I've found is when you really get it, when you really understand how your brain works, that lifts the weight off your shoulders, if you forgive the pun. Because when you're in a fear state, everything you're trying to do, you're doing with your thinking brain, you're trying to figure it out, you're trying to figure out what to do. What if your brain worked by you not having to try and figure stuff out? That's an interesting concept,

isn't it? But they talk about in the Bible, they talk about that everywhere, let go, have faith, believe, trust, give no thought for tomorrow for tomorrow will take care of itself. Do not worry about, this is from the Bible, what you shall wear or eat because it will be provided for you.

Darrell Evans

Sure, Matthew.

Liam Naden

Exactly. In fact, the Bible is one of the best manuals on using your brain that exists. It tells us exactly what to do. Avoid fear, do not

Darrell Evans

100 percent. be afraid, it's not saying, you know, be a good idea not to be as afraid, try not to be afraid. And, you know, put a little bit of effort into not being afraid and set a few goals and see if you can stop. It doesn't say any of that. It says Be not afraid, because fear is the mechanism or it's the fuel that puts you in

the wrong mental state. So if you know that's how your brain works, it's a bit like another analogy, someone gives you a glass of hydrochloric acid, says drink this, and I'll give you a million dollars. You say, hang on, I'm not going to drink that because I know what it's going to do to me, it's going to ruin my life. And they say but, but if you really believe and if you're motivated, and you're determined, and you say I will overcome this, and I'll give you

$10 million, you'll be fine. You can change your subconscious thinking to know that it's good for you. And you go, Look, I'm sorry, you don't get it, you obviously don't understand how the body works. It's just not how it works, it doesn't matter what you think. So it's the same with your brain, when you understand how it works, you realize fear is the fuel that's putting you in the wrong state, you do everything you can to avoid anything that makes you fearful. So you turn off the

news. And sometimes it's big stuff. And sometimes it's little stuff. Big stuff. Remember, I've had 18 businesses in my life. I'm an entrepreneur, too. And I know the difference, it's about getting rid of that part of your business that isn't working. Getting rid of that staff member that you know on a gut level is just the wrong person for the wrong job. But I had salespeople, I used to spend all my time with the ones who were no good. Hah, right!

Liam Naden

We've all being in that situation, and stressed and struggle and try and teach them rather than just accepting, it's the wrong person for the job. Now why didn't I get rid of them, well I was worried I wouldn't find someone else or whatever and all they had. But whatever it is, it might be a little thing like walking away from a conversation with somebody that makes you feel bad, or not having so much to do with a person that makes you feel bad, might be a big thing.

Getting rid of a relationship, getting rid of a part of your business. But when you realize negativity is continuing to train your brain, that you live in a dangerous world when you don't. It's just going to keep acting, waiting that fear thing, and you're never going to achieve what you really are here to achieve. Now to get rid of fear, you need to do a few things. You can get rid of all the external fear. But you also

need to retrain your brain. And this is what my process, neuro state rebalancing is about, is to get your brain to see the difference between what is a real life danger, and what is an imaginary danger. So your wife telling you they want a divorce, that's not a threat to your survival. So why does it make you feel bad? You know, I do marriage and relationship coaching, people get terribly stressed about it. And because they get stressed they do all the wrong things in their

relationship. So when you realize that when your brain can see the difference between a real and imaginary fear, you are going to live in this creative state most of the time, and you're only going to activate your fear thing when you, for what it's designed to do. Now, operating youor creative state, another word for that is trusting. But you know, what is trust? Because people say Oh, I trust I trust. No, they don't. I

believe. No, they don't. You can only trust something when you understand it and when you have an experience of it working. So you do need to understand how your brain works. And you need to start trusting. And you need to say, if that doesn't make me feel good, it's the wrong thing.

Darrell Evans

Yes.

Liam Naden

And cutting things out of your life. Because the only reason you're not cutting that stuff out of your life is you're afraid that the future, some big problems will arise. For instance, your marriage, if your husband or wife wants to divorce, and I'm not saying you should just say fine, see you later, but, and give up. If it does end, if you're afraid of that, you're not allowing your creative brain to bring you someone much better. You don't know that there's someone much

better out there for you. So when you operate it from your creative brain, and when you understand that it's doing the work, it's going to bring you the right people, it's going to get you to make the right decisions. A lot of them might be things like what happened to me, I had no clue that this is what I wanted, or that was going to happen. My life went in a completely different direction.

Because part of my brain that I was trusting, because what I did when I lost everything I said, I give up, I don't know the answer. I've tried all this stuff, forget it.

Darrell Evans

Yeah.

Liam Naden

And then I'm not afraid anymore. And whatever shows up shows up. I'm done. And that's when the good stuff into my brain said, Ah, thank goodness, you're out of the way. It's got rid of the stress and all the pushing and struggle, now I can do my job. And it's not that you're giving up control, but you're allowing the part of you that does the work to be in control.

Darrell Evans

You're allowing the car to drive.

Liam Naden

Do its job, you're directing it.

Darrell Evans

You're not pushing on the accelerator and the brake pedal at the same time. Right. You've got to let the car do its thing, the

Liam Naden

Exactly. brain is the vehicle. Sounds to me, like if we were to simplify this magnificently complex, but simple to understand, as the way you've broken it down, it seems like the number one Nemesis to our success is in a way, fear, but it's actually a false sense of fear that we're using to either, through imagery that's external, dialogue that's internal, and then associating it with essentially a made up threat, which is triggering the back part of that brain, which

is turning that on. And it's really just hindering our creative ability to work through the real solution that may be actually in front of us, which is this person is not performing well on their job. That's really well put, yeah.

Darrell Evans

And we've made it that they're gonna collapse the business.

Liam Naden

You put it really well. And you know, a really good example of this. We all know people who've got problems. Maybe it's a family member who has a relationship problem, and they come to you and they say, oh, you know, my marriage, or it could be your business. It's not going well, you know, my marriage. And we're arguing all the time. And I don't know, but I'm going to fight for it. And you say, look, you're in the wrong marriage, your marriage has been bad for 20 years, why

are you struggling? Why don't you just give up, just stop, go and find someone else. You're such a great person, you'll find someone far better. It's just not the right marriage for you. And you can see that very clearly. That is the answer. That's what they should do. But they can't see it. Because their brain isn't allowing them to and they say things to you like, no, I'll fight for my marriage, I'll never give up. I'll get through this. I'll get my wife to go to

counseling with me. And even though they've been to a 500 sessions before, and I'll read another book, and I'll do another course. And I'll, I'm not never, why are they saying that? They're afraid. And fear is blocking them from seeing the right answer. Whereas when they release their creative brain, they go, I'm not afraid of being divorced. Because I know my life, my brain is there to make sure I have the best life

possible. Maybe my brain is saying to me, you should be divorced from this person, it was fine for 20 years, but it's no longer fine for you, I've got someone better and something better for you. So it takes trust, which comes from understanding how it works.

Darrell Evans

can say that in any situation where I can visualize myself now going back to those difficult times, it was absolutely fear that what I was about to release or eliminate or end, I was afraid because I wasn't trusting what would happen on the other side. Right?

Liam Naden

Absolutely, yeah.

Darrell Evans

So what, if what I'm hearing you say is, and there's also this fear of what we call fear of failure, right? We don't want to be wrong. We don't want to be humiliated. We On the other side, when the four parts are working the way don't want to look bad in front of our friends, family and associates. And so I can see how this sort of cocktail of thinking all triggers back now

to fear. And that fear creates a they're supposed to, it's wonderful, you're coming up with lot of additional emotions, right, that feeling part of the brain. So it's almost as if the three parts of the brain are working against the one in a way, if we do some bad thinking the right ideas when you need to. You're feeling good, your that leads to some bad feeling, we do some then bad triggering to the mechanism of the car that's not supposed to be used like that unless you're facing a

lion. And it just completely emotional brain is making you feel good. Your survival brain shuts down the creative side. That's just visually how I just thought about what you just said. I could be dead wrong, but that's how I process it. is keeping you in great shape, making sure your organs all Yeah.

Liam Naden

So the opposite is true, as well. As when you are in the right state, those four parts of your brain work function perfectly, which it does. When you get stressed, perfectly the way they're supposed to. But you're not your organs don't function properly. That's the cause of overthinking, you're not struggling, you're not trying to disease, science is discovering. force, it's not about force. It's power, not force.

Darrell Evans

Liam. It's been an absolute pleasure dissecting this imbalancing. And just the way the four parts of the brain work, we could go on and on and on. But where can people connect with you to go deeper? Whether it's coaching with you, your products, your services, your workshops, how can people get in touch with you?

Liam Naden

Well, everything about me, and what I offer is on my website, LiamNaden.com. You mentioned I have a podcast called Using Your Brain For Success, and I go in a lot more detail about how your brain works and why it works this way. And I have a coaching program, which teaches people how the brain works, how to eliminate the fear that's coming at you, because most people don't realize what they're putting in their life. It's physical, not just mental and emotional,

that's making them feel bad. And the third thing is to uncover what the beliefs are that the fears that you have already in your brain. This is through neuro state rebalancing, and getting your brain just to hang on to the only fears that are necessary, which are the ones to your survival. And I also do coaching as well to help people individually. But that's all on my website, LiamNaden.com.

Darrell Evans

Yeah, we're going to link all that up in the show notes. And for those of you listening to this, here's what my takeaway is. My takeaway is, no matter where we are right now, which is also an underlying theme of this show, is that as long as we are willing to stop and accept that I'm at a place where I'd like to change the way I'm currently experiencing life, currently experiencing business, relationship, finances, it's okay to admit where we are

today. And I think the good news that Liam has brought to this conversation today is we can actually begin to change immediately, as long as we understand how the car works, this thing we call the brain, that's how we can get back to using it for success. And so Liam, I thank you for breaking

this conversation down. It's really been enlightening to me, I'm going to be subscribed to your podcast because it is a fascinating discovery in my mind that I can tell when I'm not using my brain for success, I can tell when I've allowed my own thinking to trigger a feeling that also may have triggered the sort of fight, flight or freeze mentality. And I've learned over the years, 30 years now in business and doing other things, how to get out of that state, but I'm not perfect

at it. And I also know that it's one of those habits that I think everyone listening to this show, who is wanting to do more, achieve more and have more balance and fulfillment and as you said, happiness right? I do. I love the book of Matthew. I think about you know, the verses that you just mentioned right? Do not worry about, right? where your food in it, does he not clothe? He feeds the birds. Everybody gets taken care of, why are we trippin? As I like to say like, why are we tripping?

Liam Naden

It didn't say set out a goals list.

Darrell Evans

That's right, that's right. So, I love it. Before I let you go. Last question I always like to ask is, with all that you've done up to this point, your path of discovery, your, your inspiration, realization, breakdown to breakthrough moment, and thank you for sharing your story. If today happened to be the last day on this planet earth that we call home, what would you want everyone to remember you for?

Liam Naden

This is someone who was trying to help people understand who they really are. It's been my life journey to understand who I am. And you know, like with fear, I'm not saying I'm perfect either, in the way I use my brain. But my mission and my passion is to, to make people realize we're so much more than we think we are. We're not this weak victim of circumstance. And we're not designed to struggle, we have this incredibly powerful machine that's designed to make us

thrive. And if I'm known as the person who helped people understand a bit more about who we really are, well, that would be, that'd be nice.

Darrell Evans

Amazing. Liam, so glad to connect with you today. Look forward to our continued collaboration and connection. Thank you so much Liam, for being on the show.

Liam Naden

Thank you, Darrell. It's been wonderful. Thank you.
