EPISODE 33 -
How To Get Your Guest To Share Their Appearance On Your Podcast
So you want your guest to share their appearance on your podcast episode - how do you do that? Is there an effective way to do so? Is it really their responsibility as a guest to share their episode with their community?
Here are 7 Things to Consider when working with a guest on your show!
(1) Be tactful when sharing their episode on Social Media
One example of a way to leverage this is to tag your guest in an Instagram story. The guest will likely repost the story and put a swipe up to allow their followers to check out the interview
(2) Make their interview with you on your show worth sharing
It's great when a guest makes comments such as “no one has ever asked me this” or “I can tell that you did your homework.” The guest can tell if you are genuinely interested in what they have to share or if you are attempting to cash in on their skill or notoriety.
A prepared interview will immediately allow you to stand out and increase the likelihood that the guest will share the episode because it makes them look good.
(3) Create easy to share assets for your guest
When booking the interview, ask if they need images or audio clips to promote the episode. I love Canva for this
(4) Ask - You do not have because you did not ask
One way to treat this is only to require a guest to share if they approach you to be on your podcast. If you've invited the guest, you shouldn't need them to share the episode.
(5) Give sincere appreciation for their time
Our gratitude for those helping us in any way spurs them to do more favors for us or pay it forward—and research even proves this when you express your gratitude to someone, and they're likely to help again.
(6) It is not - I repeat - it is not their responsibility to share the episode with their community
It is a good rule of thumb never to expect a guest to share the episode. Your responsibility as a host is to market your show. It is a “cherry on top” moment when the guest is gracious to promote your interview with their network.
(7) Provide your guest with an interview that they haven't done anywhere else - don't repeat another interview elsewhere
My go to question for my guests in the pre-interview - What would serve you in this episode? Is there anything that you haven't had the opportunity to discuss on a podcast that would add to the library of content that you have already created elsewhere? What topic would make this episode unique for you as a guest?
As a podcast host YOU become a part of your guests promo team - your guest has paid you with their time, your listener pays you with their attention - it is your job to promote the episode - not theirs!
