EPISODE 19 - Snake Oil, Vacuum Sales, Out Sourcing, and Doing it Yourself

The one person that feels that everyone needs a vacuum is... a vacuum salesperson!

There are so many podcasters out there that use their podcast to sell their wares - it is effective - you have a community, why not?!  I listen to a lot of podcasts - like, a lot.  In this episode I share my distain for podcast hosts that seem to have one gear - they want you to buy their program, plan or service - to be your $1000 a month coach, to help them reach $100,000 each month - look, good on you if that is attainable for you - but I am still podcasting for fun, working a full-time night job, running a small business during the day and podcasting every day.

Your desire to hit $100k per month is admirable but not my thing.  Apps are created daily to help independent podcasters produce their own episodes, hosting sites take care of sending out your podcast, free platforms get your podcast out there - you do not need to buy anything these other podcasts are selling.

What is making me wonder lately is how a podcaster that has a "team" that does all their podcast production and promotion for them can allow mistakes from their "team" to go out as content into the world - poor spelling, bad edits in the podcast, obvious mistakes that should have been caught - yes we are human and mistakes happen - but when an expert with a "team" continues to not improve or fix mistakes it makes me question why I would ever pay for their services.

So yep, a bit of a rant for you - I anticipate that you might not agree with everything said here, but I just feel that 1000 downloads per episode is not necessary, you making $100k per month is not my concern, sending work to a "team" and paying them a tiny amount of money with exchange rates seems off when there are people in your community looking for work!

A podcast is about the listener, not inflated egos, vanity numbers and being beat down if you don't measure up.  If you have 1 listener and your content helps them is that not enough?  Food for thought.

Do your best, forget the rest!
