Episode description

Time is of the essence. Time is the only resource that cannot be controlled or generated. Because of this reason, many goal-driven people strive to learn how to maximize their valuable time and improve productivity with the finite amount of time available to all of us.

By consistently working on improving at time management, there has been a significant increase in workaholism. Many CEOs and entrepreneurs have blurred the lines between business and their personal lives. Some have simply erased the line that should create the much-needed balance in their lives.

It may seem counter-intuitive for you to carve time out of this limited resource for something as inconsequential as a hobby, but the powers and value of hobbies are not to be overlooked and underestimated.

Many highly successful entrepreneurs carve out time from their busy routines for their hobbies. Others learn new habits and add them to their growing list. What these two types of people can agree on is that having a hobby outside of work is beneficial.

Why?

This is because the prevalence of burnout is high in the workplace, which causes employees and employers to lose creativity, clarity, and focus.

A study of hobbies and their effects on the human body showed that while carrying out your favorite hobbies, dopamine (the feel-good organic chemical in our brains) is released when doing something you like.

This feel-good chemical helps improve your mood and keeps you in the running even in the most competitive careers and stressful environments.

Let’s explore six ways your hobbies can help you be even more successful.

1. Promotes Creativity

The single superpower that your hobbies have is the greatest asset for any career or business venture. The importance of creativity in your business stems from the hobbies you have. If puzzles are your thing, it translates into creative, critical thinking in your business.

Working on your hobby streamlines your focus, gives you clarity, and allows you to see things from another point of view. They also allow you to tune out distractions and to focus on just one thing.

2. Relieves Stress

Stress is the leading cause of burnout and exhaustion. Today's workplace is laden with monotonous tasks that allow no room for creativity, tight deadlines, and impossible expectations.

This environment breeds stress which leads to an unhappy lifestyle. When you have a hobby or two, it means you are taking out time to do what makes you happy. By immersing yourself in a favorite pastime, you can relieve stress and feel refreshed.

3. Supplements Your Income

As a business owner, there are many advantages of having an alternate plan to keep you afloat in business. Sometimes, this alternate plan or Plan B, can be formed and achieved by monetizing your hobbies. While your main business has the ability to take up most of your time, diversification by monetizing your hobbies can complement your main business by providing an alternate source of income to assist the main business. It could be a business that already exists or someone you trust wants to start something that relates to one of your hobbies and you invest in that company.

4. Promotes Networking

Building relationships is a valuable skill in business. Joining the right clubs, groups, charities, or societies, links you with other people with varying skills that may benefit you.

When you join a group with people who prefer the same hobbies as you do, you can pick up new skills quickly by learning from them. The larger and more diverse the group is, the more opportunities you will be exposed to.

5. Encourages Self-reliance

The saying, ‘what is worth doing at all, is worth doing well’ relates heavily when speaking of how your hobbies can help you be even more successful. Because hobbies are generally referred to as things you do when you are free and on your own, it encourages self-reliance and confidence.

By undertaking your hobbies solely, you are able to build self-reliance on your skills that boost confidence, enhances creativity, and builds responsibility in yourself.

6. Promotes Intense Focus

When working on your hobbies, it is possible to get to a time when there is intense flow. When you don’t want to stop doing what you are doing because you feel like you are at peace and can continue that activity for a very long time.

At this point, you are intensely focused on the task at hand, your brain is extremely stimulated, and your focus has been sharpened. You can see things clearly without distractions and intrusions. Participating in a hobby helps you sharpen your motor skills and improves the relationship between your brain and how to translate your thoughts into action, which can be very good for your business.

Your hobbies have a greater impact on your life than just things you occupy your downtimes with. Even the smallest skills impact building your character and providing you with important skills that can be applied to your business and have a significant effect.

Make sure that you pick up a new hobby and run with it, or go back to a hobby you haven’t done in a long time. If it is something that you cannot continue, drop it, and pick another. Exploring the many options help you build transferrable skills.
