守母章第五十二天下有始，以為天下母。既得其母，以知其子；既知其子，復守其母，沒身不殆。塞其 兌，閉其門，終身不勤；開其兌，濟其事，終身不救。見小曰明，守柔曰強。用其光，復歸其明，無遺身 殃。是為習常。
第 五 十 二 章
天 下 有 始 ， 以 为 天 下 母 。
既 得 其 母 ， 以 知 其 子 ，复 守 其 母 ， 没 身 不 殆 。
塞 其 兑 ， 闭 其 门 ， 终 身 不 勤 。
开 其 兑 ， 济 其 事 ， 终 身 不 救 。
见 小 曰 明 ， 守 柔 曰 强 。
用 其 光 ， 复 归 其 明 ， 无 遗 身 殃 ﹔ 是 为 袭 常 。
Dì wǔshí'èr zhāng
tiānxià yǒu shǐ, yǐwéi tiānxià mǔ. Jìdé qí mǔ, yǐ zhī qí zi, fù shǒu qí mǔ, méi shēn bù dài. Sāi qí duì, bì qí mén, zhōngshēn bù qín. Kāi qí duì, jì qí shì, zhōngshēn bù jiù. Jiàn xiǎo yuē míng, shǒu róu yuē qiáng. Yòng qí guāng, fùguī qí míng, wúyí shēn yāng﹔ shì wèi xí cháng.
52. Clarity
The origin of the world is its mother;
Understand the mother, and you understand the child;
Embrace the child, and you embrace the mother,
Who will not perish when you die.
Reserve your judgments and words
And you maintain your influence;
Speak your mind and take positions
And nothing can save you.
As observing detail is clarity,
So maintaining flexibility is strength;
Use the light but shed no light,
So that you do yourself no harm,
But embrace clarity.
世界有一个开始，那开始的，就是世界的母亲。既晓得有一位母亲，就知道我们是儿子。既知道我们是儿子，就应当回归守候母亲。若能这样，纵然身体消失，依旧安然无恙。
塞住通达的感官，关闭认识的门户，你就终身不会有劳苦愁烦。敞开你的通达感官，极尽 你的聪明能事，你便终生不能得救了。能见着精微才叫明亮，能持守柔顺才叫强壮。借着大道洒下的光亮，复归其光明之中，就不会留下身后的祸殃了。这就是承袭永恒、得 着永生的意思。
