1. The Way
The Way that can be experienced is not true;
The world that can be constructed is not true.
The Way manifests all that happens and may happen;
The world represents all that exists and may exist.
To experience without intention is to sense the world;
To experience with intention is to anticipate the world.
These two experiences are indistinguishable;
Their construction differs but their effect is the same.
Beyond the gate of experience flows the Way,
Which is ever greater and more subtle than the world.

道可以说，但不是通常所说的道。名可以起，但不是通常所起的名。
可以说他是无，因为他在天地创始之前；也可以说他是有，因为他是万物的母亲。
所以，从虚无的角度，可以揣摩他的奥妙。从实有的角度，可以看到他的踪迹。
实有与虚无只是说法不同，两者实际上同出一源。这种同一，就叫做玄秘。
玄秘而又玄秘啊！宇宙间万般奥妙的源头。
