It time for another week of SWAC play and this week we are getting into some SWACtion. 4 SWAC games are on the schedule, these games will go a long way in shaping the early league races. There also 2 D2 games and 1 FBS money game. It's go time,baby!!
Week 3 is in the books and what can I say? I can use a couple of words to say how I feel. #1 is Finish and #2 is ugly, this was a rough week for the SWAC in nonconference play. Only Prairie View claimed a victory in nonconference play and AAMU won an exciting SWAC game. Close the books on this week and move on to week 4.
It's already the third week of September and the season is moving right along. This week we have some FBS matchups (including one that I'm picking as a SWAC victory), some big FCS regional matchups, and a big SWAC game. We will discuss all the action. Apologies to PVU, I forgot to preview their game. The Panthers take on Houston Baptist, I look for them to bounce back from their loss to Incarnate Word and defeat the Huskies 35-31.

The SWAC season started off with a thud as Alcorn was upset by North Carolina Central 23-14 in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge yesterday. This was a game that Alcorn never took control of and allowed NCCU to hang around. Obviously this is only the first game of the season so there is still a lot to play for, but these are the kinds of games that SWAC teams must win. Now we will sit back and watch how the Braves respond to this adversity.

Alcorn takes on North Carolina Central in the MEAC/SWAC Challenge. Both teams missed the 2020 season as well as the spring season so this is both teams first game in 2 years. I think at this point UAPB is probably one of the most disrespected teams in the SWAC this preseason. They are picked to finish 5th place, I don't see that happening. This team is returning a lot of talent and although they've lost some guys, they have added some good pieces thru the transfer portal. Their schedule isn't easy but Coach Gamble and his crew can navigate it with some good breaks. Today we wrap up our preseason previews with the Golden Lions.
The Tigers were unable to get that elusive on field win this spring, playing only two games. Although signs of growth are there, the schedule may not do them many favors. The offense led by Jalen Brown has the potential to be a tough group to stop. And that defense will look to continue it's growth over the past few years. Coach McKinney will make sure his team is a tough out for everyone. Let's talk Tigers!
Southern comes into this season with one of the most experienced teams in the league, but they have a new man in charge. Coach Jason Rollins takes over and he has some big shoes to fill. For Southern the goal remains the same, win the West Division and win the SWAC title. But the schedule will not be easy, can the Jags get the job done? We will discuss it all today.
The Panthers had a very un-PV like spring season, they finished 2-1 but they did it with defense. Instead of their usually high powered offense. Although they lost some big defensive pieces they still return a unit that could be top tier in the league. The questions are on the other side of the ball, can they find a running game? Can their new transfer QB or a returning QB stabilize this offense. The schedule isn't too challenging but it will be important to see offensive improvement if they wan...
It's always tough in the Delta, sometimes more for the home team than the visitors. But coach Vincent Dancy is working hard to change the culture of this team. Valley has been led the past few years by a strong defense. But the offense has been unable to match that success which in turn leads to the defense wearing down late in games. Can Valley get a better all around effort? This season won't be easy, the schedule is very tough. We will talk Delta Devils today.
The Tigers come into this season with all eyes on them, the spring season was what it was. With basically a brand new team, the Blue Bengals are primed to be a force in the SWAC. Coach Sanders has a box full of toys to play with, but it remains to be seen how this team will preform on gameday. So sit back and enjoy my best attempt to predict their season.
The G-Men finished a rough spring season at 0-4, the Tigers will certainly improve on that record. But the question is how many wins will they be able to garner? The schedule is front loaded so any opportunity of early success is almost too tough to predict. Grambling is a very proud program and they will not take a season like the Spring 2021 season lightly. Beware of a wounded animal they can be dangerous. Today we will discuss what I expect from Grambling.
The Rattlers begin their first season in SWAC land with a hungry team and a few questions. The main question everybody is asking is who will be the quarterback to replace Ryan Stanley? It's time to talk about the forgotten new kid on the block, Bethune-Cookman. The Wildcats went 7-5 in 2019 under coach Terry Sims. The have a hole to fill at quarterback but the offense should be solid otherwise. The defense isn't spectacular but they can make plays of their own. The 2021 schedule isn't easy so we will discuss how the Wildcats can navigate their way thru the SWAC East.
As we all know or have heard, Alcorn did not play in the Spring. But the Braves are confident that they can regain the crown that they feel that they never lost. Led by the Triggerman Felix Harper and Coach Fred "Air 1" McNair the Braves will be a tough out in their new home, the West Division. We will discuss how I think the Braves will fare this season. I hope everybody enjoyed their season of not hearing Cherokee, because the Braves are back and they are ready for all the smoke.
The Hornets are coming off of a 3-3 spring season, they head into this season with their coach sitting on the hot seat. Although I like some of the talent on this team, I don't think this team has the consistency to be a factor in the tough East Division. We will discuss how I feel their season will go.
We begin our march to the start of the Fall 2021 season by talking about the Alabama A&M Bulldogs. The Bulldogs led by coach Connell Maynor and QB Aqeel Glass were able to win the Spring 2021 SWAC Championship. The Bulldogs were active in the transfer portal and added some new pieces. Can they repeat as champs? We will discuss it all here.....
We close out our Spring recaps with the West Division Champs, UAPB Golden Lions. In 2019 the Golden Lions were the surprise team of the SWAC going 6-5, under first time Head Coach Doc Gamble UAPB took a huge step in 2020. Earning a berth in the SWAC Championship Game, we will discuss all the action that took place this season.
Texas Southern was only able to play 2 games this spring but I thought they took great advantage of those 2 games. I think they have found their QB of the future and I was really impressed with how well the defense played. These Tigers are ready and hungry for more.
The Jags entered the 2021 season as favorites to win the West Division and to possibly win the SWAC, they fell short of those goals but they did have a season of growth. The Jags were among the league's best on both sides of the ball as they finished with a 5-1 record. We will discuss how their season today.
The Panthers were only able to play 3 out of their 6 scheduled games, and those games were a mixed bag. They could never get their offense and defense on the same page. In fact for most of the season their offense never fully developed. We will talk about what happened to the Panthers this spring.
The Delta Devils certainly had a season that was impacted by the pandemic, they were only able to play 3 games this season. On the field it was more of the same for Valley. Some growth but mostly not enough depth or consistency to truly compete for 4 quarters. This is a tough job for any coach but Valley does not quit and success could be down the road for them.
The Deion Sanders era at Jackson State got off to an unusual start due to the season starting in the Spring. The Tigers jumped to a 3-0 start but finished the season on the field with 3 straight losses. There were some bright spots but there were also some things that needed to be worked on. A foundation for the future is being established, we will discuss how the spring season went.
The Grambling State Tigers certainly had a season they would love to forget, where to start? First they lost two offensive coordinators, Second their starting QB entered the transfer portal midseason, Third their season was damaged by Covid issues and finally they didn't win a game. That all adds up to an historically bad season. We will discuss all the ugly details today.
