Welcome to the Sounders FC postmat show. Sounders FC Sucker is brought to you by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders F scene postmat show starts now. Welcome in, everybody. I'm Keiley Dunning here with Pete Ewing and Marcus Hanneman here to recap an unfortunate one nil playoff loss to LAFC. Quick reaction guys, now that we're about to start our twenty
five minute therapy session on tonight in the season. Yeah, well, I'll try to talk about the referee right away, but uh, you know,
just absolutely bummed. And you know, I know what it's like being at the end of the in the locker room right now for the guys, and you know, not sure whose contract's going to be renewed, who's gone, and you're looking around at your brothers and you know, everybody you've been fighting tooth and nail for all season and to end like this because no one's planned for this, you know, to end today and tomorrow you're cleaning out your
locker. It's it's a crazy, crazy time, a mix of emotions and then frustrations with how the game went and you know, it seemed like it was very on one side of refereeing tonight and you know we'll get into that time. Yeah, well we'll get into that. We have we have twenty three minutes to talk about the referee tonight. But yeah, just just an absolute bummer for for everybody, and you know the fans who you know,
such a great season too. We had a tremendous start and then you know, we lost our way a little bit in the in the middle of the season with how things are going, we couldn't get results that we wanted. And you know, Sounders still found a way to keep themselves in the hunt and you know, found their way into the you know, semifinals tonight and you know, good l a FC team, but the Sounders created enough chances
to win this game tonight and you know, just frustration. Yeah, you got to finish those chances though, right, So I do give LA a lot of credit. Defensively, they were very good on all of the crosses from the right side with both rolled ons the left side Nico Chew, they got to every first ball, second ball, third ball, and then on restarts they were strong. They held position really well. Once they got the goal. You know, again seeing Keiolini, you know, he's been around
forever. It just seemed like they were happy with the one goal lead and they were gonna lock it down and they and they did it. So yeah, starting the season and going into the Champions League play was pretty spectacular,
groundbreaking for an MLS club. And then international call ups or the middle of the season and injuries and all that kind of stuff that but they kept you know, it's so funny because we all as fans of this team kept thinking, well, we're not having a great year, but we were never blow fourth place and enduring a lot of changes to the team, and so you know, I remember Brian about a month ago saying to the media saying, well, we're in second place, right, So the team, you know,
there's a lot of teams that would love to have had a season like this, but not exactly the way we wanted it to go. And and frankly, there was enough talent in R. Eleven and and the bench that you would have hoped we could pull one out. And I thought a goal was coming. I thought when Nico came on, I thought those were good subs at the right time. When Nico came on, he brought energy. When Rooul came in, I thought his first two or three touches were good
and I thought he was going to bring some energy as well. But again I give I give LAFC some real good credit for what they did defensively. They were and talking to Brian yesterday, he thought, whoever wins this game is going to end up in the final. I'd say LA gets past Houston and then we'll see what they do in the MLS company, do you think that as fans we have two high expectations or is that something the Sounders. We expect those expectations, right, we expect to win. That's a gat
question, you know. Oh yeah, no, there's it's as fans we always have higher expectations, right, But I think the organization has set a stand right for sure that we have to be there right. Yes, yeah, Adrian, Adrian plays humble pie a lot, but he wants to win all the time, and he expects to win all the time. And he doesn't think he needs to spend billions of dollars, millions and millions and millions of dollars. He thinks he can do it. I like their system.
I like you know, they get college guys, they get academy guys, they get DPS. The DPS this year, it's tough. You know. We saw it early on with Sporting Kansas City where Peter Vermes didn't have his first choice lineup, right, and then they had the best record in the Western Conference when Polito came back into the lineup. Yeah, yeah, and so so seasons. You never can script them, right, You can never script them. You can you can hope that, Hey, on paper,
we looked great this year. You would think Seattle if someone said, hey, this is your team, can they win the MLS Cup? Yeah, absolutely, But it doesn't always go the way you hope. I do like that. Brian says this a lot. That team never gave up. There was never a hang your head and roll over, and I've seen MLS teams do that. They were in it until the seconds of the game. So
and then on our roster we got ten local players too. I do love that, you know, I heard it Queer are claiming the roll Dands though, Yeah, yeah, because they went to college here. Yeah yeah. And you know what a great stat In the final eight teams in the MLS, the Sounders have had fifty four percent of their minutes played all season by
American players. And you know a lot of guys who played pro and were American have criticized many for many years, and we got to developed the American player and the Sounders fifty four percent of the minutes played were by American players. So the evolution of American soccer and the fact that we had two dp's on the bench is another example of the evolution of MLS soccer because what five even three years ago, how many teams have two dps sitting on their bench.
Yeah, and that's what separates Major League soccer from maybe Premier League, et cetera, is the competition and the bench and the depth of roster. It's it's pretty exciting. I mean, you know, when they came in in the fifty seventh and seventy first minutes, they definitely, you know, try to change the game. But because that's not easy to do, is it. No? And you look at to bench those guys and we're going with these guys Jackson Reagan, Yeahtensio are the main guys I think of who
have you know, really put their name on positions this year. Yeah, Jackson Reagan, I think he's got from first year to second year. His leap forward was tremendous, right and if he can keep going, and I don't see any reason why he can't be the next Chad Marshall in this club. And he and Gomez Androtti were very, very good together and Fry was good. So they've got a lot of pieces coming back that can help them
and now they've got to get maybe a few more pieces well. As you guys can tell listening at home, we have a lot to talk about about tonight, about the future of the team, about the season as a whole. We'll be back with that, the EQC Play of the match, and more after the break. The NFL's back, and there's no better way to stay up to date on the latest from around the league than listening to the

Chance for boo Wonga. I'm not the opening goal for LAFC quick ause you like in transition and Boowonga finds the back of the net to put LAFC one gol up here at Lumenfield. That was our Emerald Queen Casino play of the match, the betting capital of
the Northwest. Excuse me who, It's been a long night, guys. It really only took LAFC one turnover and one moment of brilliance. I was talking to Brad and Danny a little bit. How much would you love to have a guy like Bowonga who it just takes one moment of brilliance to change the entire game. Well, we've had those guys, right, We've had a Clint Dempsey or a ob Fami or Raoul or Nico, and we've had
a lot of those play. We've been Marcus says, you know our expectations to I. We've had some really fun, great talented players to watch. But a guy like that who scores like that is special and it's uh, you know I, like I said, I was behind the goal and his change of pace was was you went from first gear to second gear and no one could get anywhere near him. Yeah, that would be delightful week in
and week out to see someone like that coming to play. But we've had those guys and they've you know, Clint Dempsey to me was a lot of funny. Was Brad said some great things about Ruy Diaz is an assassin of a forward. Some of the goals that Obafemi Martin scored were just spectacular, you know, sixty yard punt and he turned the ball with one touch and then hit it in some of the angles he hit it from. So yeah, we've been very fortunate here, but yeah, you always want somebody who
can put twenty one goals in the back of the net. Those are those make for a happy seasons. Unfortunately, is something it was kind of the story of this season. I don't want to overstate it. Like Pete said, we have been in fourth place since the beginning of the season. We've been succeeding. We had the best minimum of fourth place, ye minimum of fourth place throughout the entire season. Stephen Fry totally robbed, not even in
the top three for voting for goalkeeper of the Year. We'll get into that later. But the goals have been hard to come by. Just that's just being honest. Goals have been a little bit hard to come by. And when we go into the off season, that may be a discussion for you know, if Nico doesn't come back, which he's announced, but we don't know, Like Brian Schmitzer said, we're sports are crazy. You never know. You never know a player, can you know? He could have come
here, seen the fans and you just you never know. But putting on your Craig wible hat is the attack really where we need to start, you know, reforming and whatever, or do we take what we have now and just you know, Jordan learning to do the hold up play, like we have some options. What would you guys do? Well? I do want to state that George almost scored twice, you know at zero zero, right,
which keeper made a great say, especially on the second one. I thought it was in when he finished it, I thought you went high the goal, Yeah he had, he was super solid. All Sounders fans hate him right now for sure, and they're going to be cussing his name as they fall asleep tonight if they can. But that's the way it goes as a goalkeeper. And this game is is is a really hard game, right,
It's hard to score. And that's why the forwards have always made way more money than I have when I was standing in the neck, no matter how good I was, they were always making way more than me. The forwards, right, it's the hardest position and they demand the most money, right, And that's just the way it is. The creative players and the ones who just out and outright goal scorers, right, they demand the most
money. And you kind of touched on a little bit, Keiley, and you know when you is so final like right, you know tonight all of a sudden, you went from planning another two three weeks of the season and next thing you know, you're clearing out the locker room. And when you're sitting around the locker room, you're looking around the faces and you're wondering who's
going to be here next year. Yeah, it's crazy. Coach, I have a question for you, as a head coach of Seattle, you for many many years, and as a coach who has you know, led teams in very important championship type games, when you lose, what is it like as a coach being in that locker room? Yeah? No fun. You thank the seniors, right, you can try to console them a little bit
sometimes at that moment, I'll let some of the seniors talk. I'll certainly make sure they get a chance to talk to and address the team in the in the post game, post season meeting. They kind of know that's their time to say whatever they want to say. But yeah, guys are are are sick about it, and they don't know their future, right, they
don't know can they continue to play? I mean not everybody gets have the al trolled on, you know, the Cozy Tafari career, right, and they want to keep playing, and so some of those guys in the locker room. Yeah, Marcus is right, he's seen it way more than I ever have. But but yeah, you just try to you try to help him through that moment. You thank them, right, you thank them for everything. And Brian I'm sure is doing a good job of that. But
it's a hard reality of pro sports. Not everybody gets to play it at this level. You talk about the goals, Kiley Seattle scored forty one this year. That goal tonight was the fifty fifth. If we had fourteen more goals, that changes everything. I mean, that's a lot of goals. That's a lot of goals in a what thirty four game season regular season. But but yeah, the goals are and Marcus is right, it's just so hard. You got a big cat like this guy with gloves on in the
goal, it's hard to get the ball around him. Case. Do you guys remember that movie? Yeah, yeah, the Marcus could have played in the Big Green, you would have been for sure. Maybe if they do a remake, Marcus could be the goalie. But you got a big guy like Marcus who can cover a lot of area as quick as a cat. Right, it is very very difficult to score those goals. So and Jordan did his chances and and he got eleven on the season. And but that's
tough. It's tough and trying to find every you know, Holy cow, Marcus, in the time that since you've been a pro, so many more pro teams have come in. Just look at the Middle East, right, and and so everybody is hunting and going to pay top dollar for that goal scorer. And and you know, look at me. I think you know when Jordan Morris scored and they had just had their son and he went running
too the camera and he did the t for his little guy. And and we've watched Jordan Morries do a lot of great things, right, and and we kind of forget that, you know, he has scored a lot of goals for us for many years, and he's come off to ACLS. So it'll be interesting to see if you if you're Craig Wible, that's uh, Marcus. I like your kind of people going ahead, going to bed tonight,
kind of cursing about you know, that goalkeeper for La. But I think for Craig and Sean and Corey, they're thinking all the time, where do we find that next guy, right, So of course that's why they make the big money, right Yeah, yeah, yeah, not easy, but you're right. That locker room is tough. It's solemn. There's a lot of humility though in that locker room, a lot of humility, which
is part of what makes the Sounders so wonderful. As an organization. It's a very humble organization from the top down, pivoting a little bit to the refereeing. We will get to that in the next segment, Marcus, I promise we will talk through it. We'll be right back after the break for more on Ted Uncle, our best friend. LAFC in the conference semi final. I'm here with Marcus Hanneman and Pete Fewing, and I think Marcus especially is pretty excited to uh, we're not excited, I don't want to say excited. He's ready to break down the unfortunate referering situation. Yeah, it was really frustrated as a Sounders fan. You, as a Sounders fan, Yes, you'd have been sitting there, going, what is happening right now? I mean we got booked for everything and
rarely a yellow card came out. Fouls that were on one end, you know, it could have been clearly a you know, rolled in was through, you know from the angle beat his man and the guy went down and took rolled down and missed that one k yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, and nothing and then he goes down the other end and there's like an innocuous challenge in the referee. I think booked our guy, you know. I mean it was a really frustrating night from a sounder's point of view, for
sure. Yeah, those are hard because it's hard to get a sense of what he's gonna call and what he's not gonna call, and then he does something that's unpredictable and he I think he really he did miss the one on Christian rolled on and that was in a fantastic spot. It was outside the box, but it was about six yards from the touch line. Seattle would have had a great opportunity. Those are the kind of free kicks that Nico loves to smash as hard as he can, bend him toward the goal and
hopefully you get a little bit of chaos in front of the goal. So yeah, he was a bit and and it it didn't get completely out of hand. It didn't get out of hand as far as players losing it, but he was just un predictable and inconsistent. Unpredictable is a great word. That's actually what Danny Jackson said on his call. It's you either want to
be predictably bad or predicted predictably good and consistent and consistent. So even if you're, you know, making consistently bad calls, at least the players know that you're being consistent. Yeah, you know what Brian Schwetzer will say, though if he heard this, he'd say, yeah, but we're not gonna blame the right. Absolutely, he wouldn't allow it. No, we can't blame the referee. But when you look at the game and the only thing
people are going to talk about it'll be broad. Yeah, especially as a Sounders fan, is how bad the refereeing was. And you know, my wife Amanda, she always made a great point. She goes, you know why referees are so bad because it gives us something to talk about. Oh good, Well there you go. I like that, Amanda. Yeah, she's way smarter than me. Welcome back to the Sounders FC postmatch show. You are Sounders falling one nil to LAFC in the
Conference semifinal. Sounders FC Soccer is presented by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Sounders FC. I am here with coach Pete Fewing and Marcus Hanneman. Guys, as we close out this show and we close out the season, I'm gonna pull out a for all you Bravo watchers anyone who watches Real Housewives. At the end of every season, they give a rose and a thorn, and I would like to ask you, guys, what your rose for the season is and what your thorn is. Coach, I will go to
you first. I think just getting into the champions leage, going and getting that experience, it has to start somewhere. It sets a bar, a new expectation. The glass ceiling gets raised up a little bit. So the fact that Grant we didn't get to win in that, but but I think that I think the other positive is that the team never gave up and there were a lot of times where we're looking at the lineup thinking, wow, we are missing a lot of talent and a lot of our starters. To
Marcus this point, we've had a lot of young American guys playing. So those are all positives. The thorn I think, I you know some of these that Stephen and Frey had a great season. I thought our back line, you know, fifteen shutouts all year, and I think that was kind of left off the marker. I think that was something you had said as well, and so that's a bit disappointing. And then tonight's disappointing. Its disappointing to just not go further. We've been in four MLS Cups and those
are really fun. And so December night is not going to be a Sounders night. It's gonna be uh will be somewhere in Ohio. We do know that. Yeah, yeah, that's right, that's right. So so yeah, that's it for me. Yeah, Marcus, Oh, I don't know.
You look at a season like this, it's always gonna end, right, It's always going to be sudden, right when you're in the playoffs, right, that's the you're always hoping to go on and you know that's always a disappointment, but that's just the way sports are, right, Unless you win the whole thing. Right, it's always just going to be this final We're done. Oh my gosh, like what just happened? And you know, everybody had these plans for you know, the next two three weeks and
and now we don't know what's going on. My highlight of the season, I think, Uh, Pete, you kind of touched on a little bit. And the thing that I'm really proud of the Sounders is how many young guys we have and you know, playing for us, and you know, not just you know, on the squad, but valuable minutes. Right the guys are in there who started tonight, you know, especially you know,
Jackson Reagan and Atensio. Those two guys, for me, that was kind of the highlight of the season, I think to see them and then not not just not just play tonight, but have a valuable, really important impact on the team, and how much better they got all through the season. And you know, because Schwetz gave him an opportunity, and you know it's not always you know, a full game, but what can you give me, you know, and for a Tensio that's easier because he's a midfielder.
Okay, when Nico was tired or somebody. You know, he can go in. It's back four. You don't want to change right in your keeper. So getting those guys experience and for Jackson to be able to get this many minutes at a young age, yeah, you could see what he did tonight. That was that was remarkable, you know. I mean, and you know they're not they're not there yet, but you know their improvement has
been is great. I'd love to see a tenso be able to you know, stronger in the air, right, you know, because you stand next to Tensio and you're like, oh my gosh, you're way bigger than I imagine, right, Jackson Reagan, you know, his understanding of the game, his positioning has improved so much this year. But also I think he should be better in the air, you know. And it's a it's a simple thing, right, and it's win your headers. And for a position
like a center back, it's easy. But as a midfielder for Atensio, because he's got that size, I think that's the one thing that he really needs to get better at for next season. Well to just to add on to that, we've got a lot of guys that were soccer players here right that helped develop this talent, right, so Jimmy McAllister at Seattle United,
those guys were there before they came to the Sounders Academy. Bernie James with Crossfire, right, Chance Fry with and Tom Bileck with east Side that you know, Jordan Morris came through that Seth's bedal out in to Coma with Washington Premiere. It is really cool as a kid who grew up here, you know, and we were season ticket holders in seventy four, right and all the way through so through the Kingdom years, and so to see young guys
getting the chance. I do remember as a player, Ce and Alan Hinton coming out and watching us play and thinking we might get a chance. So that is it's pretty cool. It doesn't you go a little south to Portland, you don't see a lot of kids from the Portland roster that grew up in Portland. We have a lot of young people get to come in here and you hear the Sounders come out onto the field. We're very fortunate to
be a part of this a Quille you mentioned it. The team always tries to do things the right way, and you feel a part of it and you feel connected to it, and the guys, the players also as well as the front office and the ownership they make that happen for our city. So we are fortunate that we are not some of these MLS teams where the crowd gets up and walks out Colorado, right, and some of those they
can do better, right, And I'm not knocking them. I'm just saying, we have a really good thing here and don't underestimate how important that is for young players who you know throughout playing here, yeah, right, and for you like you have you know, a rolled in who went to SU I mean that's a marketing Oh my gosh. So you don't have to do anything right, and like there is this path, right, We've got young kids like Intensio who didn't even go to right who have now made their way
into the first team. You know those things, and the kids who are playing in this area they have that, you know, they're like, oh, I've got this chance that you know, I can see the stepping stone when it's filled up with people from outside the area. It's harder to see that. Corey sins or one of the scouts is in the stands. At a lot of college soccer games, I see him all the time at Seattle you or at Washington, right, and he's even kind of drilling down and
saying, hey, is there anybody at Seattle Pacific? So you're right, it gives kids an opportunity. Yeah, shout out to Corey Sincer. By the way, he joins our Monday calms meeting every Monday, and he's always somewhere else because like you said, he's scouting all over the place. I'm going to give my rose and thorn. My thorn is stuff and fry not winning goalkeeper of the Year. I'm not going to get over that. It's ridiculous. He's a big reason, if not the main reason why we've been
so successful this season. And my rose is being able to work with all of you guys and being able to be you know, be your producer, occasionally step in a host and you know it's it's really there's a larger Sounders family, and then there's a smaller Sounders of C broadcast family, And you guys make my life very easy. You make my job very easy. So
thank you. We're lucky to do it's full. I'm going to keep asking you for more tickets then, yeah, okay, all right, maybe slow down on the sideline past request please, you know it's all good, all right, Well, thank you for joining us from Move and Field.
