Welcome to the Sounders FC Postmatt Show. Sounders FC Sucker is brought to you by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders FC postmat Show starts now. So final from Kansas City. Your Sounders have fallen tonight by a final score of two to one. This game went into halftime with a score of one to one. Goals in the twelve minute from Jordan Morris, the nineteenth minute from Johnny Russell, and then the second half was
not good. We saw a red card from Reid Baker Whiting, we saw consistent pressure from Sporting Kansas City, and then in the eighty fifth minute we saw a massive mistake from Stephen Frye as a shot from Vargas of Kansas City somehow gets through our goalkeeper and somehow gets through our captain and your Sounders despite a couple of chances late good chance on the left side for Josh Atensio from Obed Vargas, Cody Baker, excuse me, and unfortunately not able to find
the winner. As You're Founders have fallen tonight. They now go to five two and three in their last ten games, and maybe the hardest part to swallow is the fact that Sporting Kansas City, with the win, get their first win since March thirtieth, their first win in eleven MLS games. Pete Fewing Jackson Feltz here for the postgame show. Pete, I since final whistle, I might have said about five words before we took the air. I
mean, I really don't know what to say. There's a lot of conversations we have to have on this postgame show, one very very difficult one. We'll get to here in a little bit, but let's just start right now with your opening thoughts on this very very disappointing loss. Oh, the game can be cruel. It can be cruel Seattle, It's unfortunate, you know. I think either Danny said it or Stevie said it. That when Baker got his second yellow card, that you'll learn right. We saw Jackson Reagan
go through that. The young man who was taken down, I think it was Vargas was taken down. He he was so elated that they got the second yellow and that at that moment, Kansas City was putting Seattle under a lot of pressure. But then when we went to ten men, they're momentum
even kicked up even more so. Yeah, it's a tough one. And you know, I know that locker room is going to be dead silent because I thought, I thought Seattle honestly, once the yellow the red card in the seventy fourth minute came, I thought, Okay, hold on for sixteen minutes, you get one point out of this. You can keep your head up. But that's it's a tough loss. And it is interesting. We
said it in the pregame show. In MLS, any team can beat any team on any day, and well, but sure, but like this isn't This isn't top of the levers, the bottom of the league team. Yes, Kansasity's at the bottom, but Seattle right now is not even playing like a playoff team. That's just the reality of it. We're not in a playoff spot. We don't hold the payoff spot. We're not playing like a playoff team. And frankly, yes, we're five to one and three in
the last nine. That was good points wise. I mean, you average that out over the course of a season, you're looking at near sixty points. That's great. But at the same time, we talk about the form of this team right not holding onto late leads and today, I mean this wasn't anybody can beat anybody. This was a home team at home, I think against at one one of the half. You know what, we didn't say it, but I thought this, you know, very clear in my
mind, this feels fair. This feels like it's gonna be a point of piece, and two teams that are right neck and neck fighting for a playoff spot. It really comes down to that red card and a couple of mistakes in this match that that costs two I think very even teams when they're at eleven on eleven. Yeah, and that, and again that's why the game is so cool. It does come down to one play here or one play
there, a little bit of luck on one side. We were lucky at Saint Louis when Christian Rolldon hits the cross it and goes in over over the goalkeeper. And I think even Brian Schmitzer said that, you know, maybe that was the beginning of it, you know, and then and then you get unfortunate. I have never seen Stephan Fry have a ball go through his legs like that. Yeah, And I remember Casey Keller against this Sporting Kansas
City team in whatever year twenty ten. Maybe ball goes past him and he goes to scoop it out of bounds and he scoops it into his own net, right, And I think everybody was shocked by that. That was something you'll never see, I've never you know. And he hit it well, it was a knuckle and it went through and it's unfortunate, you know. And I think I think step Steph will raise his hand. You mentioned he's
the captain. Of course he's going to raise his hand in the locker room and you know, and you'll have the backing of Tommy du Trenhill, the black backing of his teammates. It was a rare one tonight, right, But think how many times we missed. Albert Rusnik has a good opportunity, skies it over the crossbar, has another good opportunity, skies it over the
crossbar. The dilemma when you're the last guy is that is that if you're the last guy back the goalkeeper with the using using your hands and it gets through, then it feels like a lot of pressure. But I know Brian will say you can't throw that all on Steph because we miss chances. So it's unfortunate. It is and and the young kid getting the second yellow for our red. Yeah, you know that's a that's a teachable moment, as
they say, but gosh daring, it's a cruel game. The conversation between Brian Schmitzer and and Peter Urmes after the game, you could tell Peter was like, look, I know we're both in tough spots right now as far as where our teams are at on the table. And sorry that we got We got the better half of it tonight, so tough one. And and and now we're coming back home for what four games at home in five and we got to regroup. So that is a tough one. Let's say.
It is funny how you know this year they haven't won in what'd you say, ten games? Right? They were eight eight losses and two ties. And last year is a similar thing. And I remember last year thinking I don't like this at all, especially out of Peter Burme's team, and with Johnny Russell and Alito, those are good players who aren't going to back down. Sporting Kansas City get the win tonight two to one red card for Reed Baker Whiting puts Seattle at ten men and then a goal getting by Vargas of Sporting Kansas City there in the eighty fifth minute gives them the two to
one winner. You talked about, Stephen Frye. We got to have a hard conversation that'll come up next on Sports Radio nine to fifty KJR AM. Jackson Feltz and Pete Hewing Here after a night like
tonight, I like to have dessert before any veggies. I just want to know, dig into the chocolate cake. I want to get to the dessert. I want to feel good for a moment. So let's get to our
Emerald Queen Casino. Play of the match this game, the first twelve minutes were great Sounders had chances, and then the twelfth minute, Jordan Morris, who has been on a heater for the last four or five games, he scores on a great ball from Joel Paolo's Jordan Morris one on more has he got a chance and he puts it in there, looks across to the assistant
referee. No flag and that's the Sounders first goal and Jordan Morris's fifth goal in Kansas City in the last two games, spawning casees Neil sound as one. The play of the match was presented by Emerald Queen Casino. It's the betting capital of the Northwest. Two things to talk about here, A the great ball from Juel Polo, the fantastic timing by both of those guys, and be the fact that you know, listen, a few games ago we talked about listen, Jordan Morris, we need more from you. Over the
last few games, we are seeing it from him. Yeah, I think you just told me three goals in four games. And it was a It was a clinical finish, It was efficient. He didn't take an extra touch, he didn't get too close to Mila, you know, taking away his angle. He looked to Mela's left and then he's and then he really he didn't tuck it away. He punched it into the back of the net to his right. And so that was a great goal, great pass from That's
what we get. JP does two things really well. One he he unlocks defenses. That was a great ball that unlocked the defense. And two on the defensive side. He picks off a lot of passes. That was the first note I wrote about three minutes in JP picking off a pass. So and Jordan and he have a good connection together and it was a terrific finish. Again, you know it's interesting. It's right down the middle of the park. Yeah, the wing. We need him on the wing to get
our best eleven in there. But when he can float inside and get into that spot, he's money. That was a great goal. He burned saying the same way, and it burns Kansas City tonight one was from RUSNK. Tonight was from JP. Just great and we need to see a lot more of that from Jordan and from everybody else offensively. So nice to eat some
dessert their congratulations for Jordan on that goal and JP on the assist. Speaking of food, time to get to the vegetables and time to get to a difficult conversation because you know, you look at social media, you know it's
funny. I'm on vacation the next few days with KJR. I'm taking next Monday through Friday off. I'll be back for the Saturday Minnesota broadcast the fiftieth anniversary match. We'll talk about that in a little bit. But I decided just a few minutes ago, I think I'm just gonna delete Twitter for the next six days. I'm getting out of town. I'm just gonna delete it.
But I'm not deleting it yet because it does help, you know, just understanding what the fans are thinking and what people are saying right now. And Pete, the conversation right now is about Stephen Fry because the reality is is that in the nineteenth minute, Johnny Russell shot from distance, and we all set at halftime and we all agreed, that's one Fry's gonna want back. That's a tough one for Fry. You know, he should have made
the play there, and that's one he made a few years ago. So that was already in the nineteenth minute goal and in the eighty fifth minute, you know, yes, and we'll be talking about it right after the final whistle about how Jackson Reagan could have helped and done more to not allow that goal, but also when the SHOT's taken there from Vargas, that's a ball that Stephen Fry needs to get it. He's at the near post there,
it goes right at him and somehow skips by his chest. No matter how the shot, it didn't skip or anything, it just got right by him. And the conversation is becoming with Stephan Fry having an increasing number of these moments where you go, oh, Steph, oh, you gosh, you
should have made that play. There's been increasing number of that this year, and with Andrew Thomas on the rise and with him making big plays and making statements, the questions are starting to be asked and people are starting to say, start Andrew Thomas, bench Stephen Fry. It's an interesting conversation and it's one we need to have. Well, I'm not ready to go to bench
the captain yet, he's done too much for us. You think about I've seen a replay of that goal several times now, probably six or seven times, and I've seen other goalkeepers around the world make that same kind of non safe right gets through the wickets. It's a well hit balls from a tough angle and Fry, yeah, it went through, but I'm not ready to say he's not the guy. And I think about my coaching hat and I think about what he's done, and I don't know that there's been too many
of those moments. I can't think of other ones that he's had this lay Galaxy fourth minute against Gabrielle Peck, who slides it past him in a similar way. Okay, okay, so yeah, I don't recall that one, but I trust you on that for sure. So I'm not quite ready for that yet, and I don't think the coaches are, and I don't I think the players still. Well, I'm trying to put my player on if I'm Christian Roldan or alex Or or Gomez Androtti. And we talked about this
before the game too. He needs a little more help from the guys in front. I think the the second goal, even though it went through his legs, was a tougher save than the first one, and I think for I would say you should have made that first save. So I'm not ready for it yet. I don't think the coaches are ready for it yet. I don't think the players are ready for it yet. But I understand the
question. Yeah, I totally do. And that's good insight to you know, to get into the minds because obviously you're tight with guys like Tommy and Brian, you know them very personally, so getting into their heads, you know, understanding where they're coming from in these situations as well, and obviously knowing these players very you know close as well. Well. Let me let me play the other side. Let me play this side that says Andrew Thomas
should be starting. And and I listen, we're a few minutes out of this game. I'm not sure you know of I needed to take a few minutes to actually think if that's what I truly believe. But let me play the other side, because it's it's conceivable that driving home tonight, my long drive to Tacoma, I think to myself, you know what, I think it's time for a change. So let me play this side here, because you use the reasoning here he's done too much for us and he's the captain.
Yeah, and my rebutt debate right now. My rebuttal would be, just because a player has done so much for us in the past, why does that mean that he must start for us in the future. My second thing is we've seen Christian rolled on have the captain's arm band a number of times. We've seen his impact and frankly, others impact Roul Jordan, et
cetera. Why is it not conceivable that a field player like like a Christian could take the captain's arm band if if Andrew Thomas was to slide in, Yeah, and I'm I would be fine if Christian was the captain as well. I think, uh, had he been healthy all season and last season, he probably would be. So it's not so much just that he's the captain and he's got the armband. You're right, there's other capable people that
could take that and do a good job with it. And frankly, I think coaches would prefer not to have a captain as a goalkeeper because you're not in the middle of the park. Correct. So but I think I look at the the whole season and again I go back to we haven't been playing
well in front of him. I thought the Johnny Russell shot should have been blocked or cleared, and and then we've dilly dalied early in the season and given up some goals where all we had to do is kick it out and then it gets shoved right down the right down the middle of the eighteen yard box. So I look at it. I'm not quite ready yet, and I totally understand why you're saying it. I'm not on the social media listening to it right now. Good idea, and I feel for stuff. He's
a very, very capable goalie. That's why they signed him for another two years. Andrew Thomas is proven in the US Open Cup and some of the games. He's really good. Yeah, yep. And I like him as well. And but I think right now you I would say, I personally would stick with Fry another game, see where we are. That's what I would do. I think I think that's fair. I think that's that's a fair take, especially since the next game is the fiftieth anniversary game, you
know, when you're celebrating the fifty years of the club. I don't think you bench you're, you know, one of the greatest sounders of all time for your fiftieth anniversary match. I think that's completely out of the question. I think this is more of a general thought of you know, if Fry continues to have these moments over the next few games, do you have to make the switch at some point? I think you're right for for Minnesota coming
up in a week. I don't think you can possibly make a change there past, you know, just because of because of what the game means. And I know some fans will be like, but it's just another game. It's not. It's a fiftieth and versary game. It's a big deal. It's a big celebration. You can't do that to Steph and Fry. But let's just see how that goes. Yeah, And and because we've consistently seen great things out of Andrew Thomas last year in Tacoma, he was exceptional this
year obviously we've seen in the Open Cup exceptional. Right. So it's it's these things that that are making you know, I'm not sure if it's the closest Maybe it is the closest competition at any one spot on the team right now. There's there's a few guys in there. Read Baker Whiting, we thought he could have taken a step towards knew who. Maybe he did, but the red card's tough to ignore after this one. But that I think,
and let me see, we'll wrap it up with this. Would you say that goalkeeper A should be or B is a full on competition right now. It always is, Yeah, it always is. Yeah, it has to be more more now than before. Though. I think Steph would be the first to say, hey that I gotta do better. I should have say both those. Yeah, and he knows. I mean we talked to Bryan sometimes He's like, hey, we got to win, you know. He says, this is a competitive league. We got to win. I'm
the head coach, we got to win. And the fry says, hey, I got to get shutouts. Right, So it's always going to be a competition, and you're always looking for answers. I mean, right now, record wise, what are we four seven and three? Is that what it is? It's we are now? We are four to seven. I can't I can't see my own handwady. I saw it a few minutes ago on the graphic and I immediately forgot it. We are four seven and six, Yeah, four seven six. You always have to ask questions when you're
in that situation. Right, Winning covers a multitude of sins, right and uh. But right now they're they're going to hop on a plane and get back and that will be the discussion that coaches are having. But it's everywhere across the field right right. We had chances to put shots away and we didn't do it. The dilemma for Fry is he's the last line so when it goes in. But I I respect him too much as a goalkeeper and a leader and that I wouldn't pull that trigger yet. But but he would
be saying. Fry would be saying, I understand people saying what they're saying. Yeah, I think it's he and he'll and he'll raise his hands in the locker room say absolutely, I gotta save those and yeah, he'll be he'll be sick. Oh yeah, And I listen, I I no matter, no matter my take on the situation, I think we can all agree Fry right now. We gotta feel for him because he right now is in
a very tough spot. Flying back from Kansas City. After those two goals go in the back of the net and it's a two to one win for Sporting Kansas City, we'll take a break and talk about the game ahead for the Sounders. It is the fiftieth anniversary match against Minnesota. You can also watch the match via MLS Season Pass on the Apple TV app and of course get your tickets soundersfc dot com slash tickets for the big fiftieth anniversary match. That will be a ton of fun out there at Loomin, a bunch of cool fan things going on. And Pete for the product on the field. We had that great
debate. I really do think it was a great debate over the goalkeeping position here for the Sounders, but across the rest of the team right now, I think you know, we're seeing a team that has flashes of moments. If you say, oh yeah, they can do more that that's going to be a team that you know, can go far in the Western Conference.
I'm wondering if if you can continue to roll out this same lineup that we saw tonight, no added injuries, knew who will be back from international duty, so he'll slide in at left back, or if there's any other changes Brian Schmitzer and his staff could make to get more out of this team and
get three points next Saturday. It's a great question, but I'm looking at the starting eleven, I'm looking at the bench, and I think that lineup tonight was the best lineup we can put out with the players that we have. I agree, I think it's tough to I think Chew could be a spark for us, you know, but I don't feel like anybody in particular is that's on the bench is hot right now. We don't have a guy who's come off. You know, we're hitting the fiftieth anniversary of the Sounders.
We used to have a guy named Dave Butler, Davy Butler, and he was a starter and then he became the super sub is what the fans called him. And it was great. I mean, he'd be on the bench and the Kingdom would be channing Davy Butler and he'd have his arms on either end of the bench and he'd be he'd be conducting right, he'd get him started, and you know he'd come off. But I don't, we don't have Misovski's had a couple of good chances, but hasn't put him away.
So you don't say, okay, he should be in that starting eleven because if you were to get Leo in the field, he'd play on the left, Jordan would flip to the right, Christian would slide back and obit has to come off the field. And it was an Obed Vargas played his way in good yeah, exactly. He played his way into the game, and I thought he had a good second half, you know, one of the few guys that had I think a good second half, especially when they
went down to ten men. We saw good moments. He led a couple of charges to maybe get it back to two to two. I thought, you know, I don't all of it is that I don't think you can take off Obed Vargas to put on Leo cho I don't think that there's And we talked about Stephan Fry. The previous segment being the fiftieth anniversary, I don't think there's a change to make for this next match. I would agree, I would agree, and I think it's again, We've said this a
number of times this season. They got to come together as a group, yes, and say we have to own this. And all those guys know that. I mean, if if I was coaching the team, I would be saying, and I'm sure Brian saying, hey, come on, you guys, you are better than what you're performing and we have got to find a way, and we need some leadership, and we need some guys to step up, and we need some guys to to com finish a chance,
make something special happen. The goal you said it at the beginning of this segment. That goal was if we can do more of that, right, yeah, right, If we can do more of that, create more chances for Jordan to be getting one on ones, whether it's a diagonal run, whether he's cutting inside. You know, he cut inside from the left and had a good opportunity as well, and we had the good one from Baker, Cody Baker. He just missed Josh. Yeah, I missed Josh Atencio
in like the eighty six minute. And if he puts it on Josh's foot, Josh has a good clean look. He's in open space six yards out. So they've got to they've got to take the good that they're doing and create more of it, and then they've got to eliminate any of the mistakes. I think you're absolutely right that it's about leaders stepping up. It's about players stepping up, veterans and and and taking charge and saying we're not going to take it and we're gonna, you know, step up, and you
come together have a big performance. And listen, Stephen Fraser captain. Yeah, he's your captain. And if he's gonna wear that armband, he step up and be a captain right now in this moment. Now that's not only you know, you know, raising his hand for the two goals. It's
it's it's stepping up and bringing this team together however that's needed. And you turn to your roles and Christians and your veteran leaders JP and and get this team together and get this team on the right track because you know, again we can see these moments, but the moments are not consistent this year. So uh, you know, final final thought here as we look ahead to Minnesota next week, Well, Minnesota's third in the league right now, it's
a chance to go up the table. And I don't necessarily like celebrating things at Lumen because the last time we celebrated Champions League, we got thumped by Portland. Forget about what happened after the banner. So I think it's the most important that we put that we go and yeah, maybe they do that after the game, but it'll be a fun celebration. I said to Stevie Zachwani before the game. I said I could, I could sit down with
a pen and paper and name one hundred NASL Seattle Sounders. That was what it meant to me. I tell people this a lot. The NASL Memorial Stadium, you know, in its current configuration, holds eleven eleven thousand, five hundred. The Sounders packed eighteen thousand people into those games. Wow, And we used to go. My dad smoked and I'd use the game program to get the smoke out of the way. And you know, it was
really peppy. Fernand his wife was one of the cheerleaders, got rest her souls she passed away, And but those guys were our heroes and they came into the town and Frank McDonald's done a good job of some storyboards that are going to be fun in the stadium. I was reading some of his stuff, and those guys came into town and they did appearances, They went to
birthday parties. Jeff Wall who's fire chief, Jeff's retiring, and he played for the Sounders, And when he was nine, a bunch of starting Seattle Sounders came to his house for a birthday party. Jeff's dad, Jeff Senior, English Right, a new bunch of the guys, and as a matter of fact, Jeff's little brother, Rabbit. John Roland would go and get Rabbit and bring him down for the warm up on the field. I mean, there was just this love fest and it was Woodstock It. If you
were there, you knew what it was. And if you weren't there, you're like, oh, I've heard about it. But so I'm excited about that fiftieth anniversary. Those guys were my heroes growing up, and I got to end up playing with some of them and playing for some of them. And I said earlier, I coached a bunch of Sounders kids, which one year we went undefeated, never lost, and I had to face Jeff Stock Sr. Jimmy McAllister, Tony Chersky and Tommy Jenkins after most games and explained
why we did what we did. And finally at the end of the season, Stocksy God bless him, just said, hey, they're undefeated. We end up winning the national championship and none of those guys did. If you're listening to you guys, none of you guys have national championship rag. So there, so I'm excited about that. Minnesota's gonna be good. Yep.
They've really rebounded with their new coach and Sawni, a local kid, got a goal today, the Oregon State product from Federal Way, and they're won one tie with Dallas, So that'll be a good It's an important game because we got to get on track. We do. We have to get on track for the Sounders. That'll be a fun fiftieth anniversary match once again, seven o'clock, Providence, Swedis pre match shows seven to thirty kickoff ninety three
point three Kids Your FM, Luminfield Sounders, Minnesota United. By the way, if I can just say really really quick, the decision a couple of years ago to raise the CONCACAFT Champions League banner when Portland was in town. I don't care how much he done. I'm gonna get for this because I'm going to delete twittery for the next six days. Right after I say this, I thought that was a fantastic decision to raise that banner in front of
their faces. Yes, you can say Portland got all the you know, the feelings and whatever, and you know they were clearly wanting to take it to us after we raised the banner and so much, you know whatever. I love that decision because guess what, Portland, you don't have a CONCA cat title. Ah, no you don't, and you had to watch us raised in front of your fat faces, So you know, I love the decision. I love the decision that that banner went out before that Portland game,
regardless of what happened afterwards. And again I completely forget what happened afterwards. Love that decision. I just get that off my chest here. I know I'm gonna take a care of it. I do feel better. I love that. I've always loved that anyway, regardless, That's one of the great moments in our club's history.
