Transcript

Welcome to the Sounders FC postmatch show. Sounders FC Sucker is brought to you by Providence, Swedish official healthcare partner of Seattle Sounders FC. The Sounders FC postmatt show starts now. We will go to a Game three on Friday. Sounders fall tonight by a score of three to one in Frisco, Texas FC Dallas, and there will be a deciding Game three Friday at lumen Field six

thirty pre match seven o'clock kickoff. Well broadcast details on Sounders Weekly back on ninety three point three KJRFM on Wednesday night, and we will move forward to that Game three with a Dallas win tonight. So welcome into the postmatch show. Jackson feltzpeeewing here for the next twenty minutes or so. We don't know

how long. We're just gonna talk until we can't talk anymore. From what was a frustrating three to one loss that felt like very easily could have been a two to two game going to penalty kicks, which would have been going on right now. Unfortunately, Obrion scores in the ninetieth minute and that made it three to one Dallas, and that's how it ends. Pete. We're going to dig into that no penalty decision, because that is what everybody is

talking about right now on social media. We're going to dig into that in a moment at what could have been. But for right now, let's just open with initial thoughts from the three to one lost tonight here in game two, Well, I thought Brad said it what ifs right, there are a lot of what ifs. I thought Seattle started very sluggish and kind of fronted Dallas two goals. For I couldn't have done anything on all three of the goals he was. You know, they were just terrific goals. Once a

PK you got a twenty percent chance of saving that. But we had our chances, we had opportunities that we didn't put away, and I think we came out a little bit sluggish. Coach Smetzer said at the game in Seattle. You know, I like the first twelve minutes. I liked the last twelve minutes of the first half, and then the next forty five and the second half we're good. There were some times in this game where I don't

think he liked it. I don't think the players liked it, and I just don't think we were sharp enough, but Seattle had chances, They had chances to score and didn't put them away. And you know, you need that killer instinct. Sixteen and twenty sixteen, twenty nineteen, there was that killer instinct, and they've got to find it. They've got to find out. Thought Nico again came on the field and brought a spark, but yeah,

they just missed opportunities. And gosh, the off side goal looked offside, but it's one step, you know, and so he was off. He was off, Yeah, just a step. Yeah. And I thought the penalty kick call against Nico was legit, right, I thought it was. We both agreed it was legit. But how they got penalty? Knew who they knew who first? Right, knew who, sorry on knew who. I thought it was legit, and I don't think we had any I don't think anybody argued that one. But the one they didn't call, I

don't quite understand that. It's I was thinking, it's like a guy who's a lefty yep, and he gets fouled and he's gonna shoot with his right foot, and the referee says, well, he's not very good with his right foot. Yeah, no, that's not the point. Let's let's let's set this up. Let's set this up because this, this really is where we have to start tonight. Dallas at this point where we're in the seventy sixth minute, Dallas at this point is leading the match two to one.

Jordan Morris, it should be mentioned our Emerald Queen Casino play the match came to deserved. Forty eighth minute, I mean, start of the second half, Jordan Morris takes away an aeron as this mic breaks uh, Jordan Morris takes away an errant pass from FC Dallas in the forty eighth minute. He picks it up, fights off a defender, really fights off with you know, a couple of guys, and then slips it into the bottom left corner

for the goal. In the forty eighth minute. I'll quickly mention that the play of the match is presented by Emerald Queen Casino, the betting capital of the Northwest. That made it two to one. So let's go to the seventy sixth minute. Here. What happens is there's a ball into the box and ral Ruy Diaz, the keeper post comes out. He grabs it, but about I don't know about seventy yards. I think to passa's right.

Ral has his jersey poll by Hayesus Ferrera, who's tracking back from his forward position from Dallas Raul working running into the box trying to catch the corner. He's probably not gonna get to the ball. That needs to be said. Roll would have to have a superhuman element of speed to cut into his right, get in front of pass, and get ahead on the ball. It would have to be superhuman. Maybe not out of the question, but very

unlikely. Rawl gets to that ball. But the cross comes in, and as the cross comes in, Hayesus Frera pulls the back of Rolriedi's jersey. As clear as day. It is as clear of a foul as you could possibly imagine, one hundred percent, without a shadow of a doubt, a foul in the box. But they go to var and the referee rules no penalty, Pete Fewing, make it make sense. If there is a foul in the box, it is a penalty. How in the world is a foul in the box not a penalty? Yeah? That there, it's funny

because make it makes sense. Yeah, it's well, humans, there's humans, and it comes down to a judgment on what the referee thought, and I would say it was closer than seven yards, I'd say more like five and a half, right, And if he doesn't get pulled, maybe it's uh two and a half right, And and then maybe Pause is distracted and

bobbles the ball and it's a little poke in. Never know, So yeah, I just I don't understand because I don't think coach Metzer or any of the staff or any of the players argued with the foul against new who. I think the same would be with Estevez, the Dallas coach. If that happened and he saw it, he say it's a penalty, right, I don't think that there would be a lot of argument. It's a foul in the box. It's a foul in the box. So yeah, I don't

I don't get it. It's so funny because we thought var was going to be you know, this is going to clean up the game, and we have seen in the EPL today you saw it as well, and you see in the in the v ar is still comes down to some very personal decisions, right, you know, it's not it's not going to be black and white. It's not gonna be that clear. So yeah, I don't, I don't understand. And the referee, and I'm this happens all the time

every level of games. Referee says, oh I missed that one, you know, and sure, and so yeah, exactly, and then the next time. Momentum is a big deal in this and if we had tied it up in the seventy eighth minute, now all of a sudden, Seattle is on the ascendancy and they've they've come back from to nothing down and Dallas is saying, oh my gosh, you know, the crowd gets taken out of it, and then you go to PK's and you never know where it goes

from there. So yeah, it's it's a real head scratcher because we all know Brian is just going to look at it and go, well, they got to make those decisions. But privately, I'm sure he's thinking, how do you not make that call? So it's a tough one. And really Dias was clearly ahead of Ferrara and he had no choice but to pull him back like that. But that's penalty. So oh my gosh, if ifs

and butts were candy and nuts, we'd all have a merry Chris. You know we're on a stream channel right now, We're not actually technically on the radio. So like theoretically I could use harsher language as I'm looking at Hannah here, I don't do it. I will not use harsher language, but I will do that on the drive home extensively. No penalty for your sounders there in the seventy sixth minutes despite it going to var and is a three

to one loss for your sounders. We'll take a break, we'll come back talk more about today's match and also game three ahead on Friday back in Seattle. Following a Sounders three to one last to night to FC Dallas Game three coming up on Friday at Lumenfield six thirty Providence. Weish prematched so seven o'clock kickoff. We will talk to yet there on Friday. But continuing the postmatch show Jackson Felt and Pete Fewing here. I should also mention Wednesday Sounders Weekly ninety three point three kJ FM going to talk to the

man who called the match for Apple TV, Brian Dunseeth. He and I are texting right now and eager to get his thoughts on the no call penalty kick in the seventy sixth minute, which I am absolutely irate over spent the last couple of minutes during the commercial break, letting it all out and it

will come out more over the next four days. But looking ahead to Friday here in a little bit, but let's quickly wrap up our conversation on the three to one last tonight, Pete and where I want to go here is what happened in the first twenty minutes, because everything we I mean in the prematch show, I was kind of like, you know, I have a hard time seeing Dallas score an early goal. Well, they scored an early goal and in the sixth minute that completely changed the complexion of this game.

They scored again in the sixteenth minute on penalty kick, and Pete, it kind of felt like Seattle in the squad wasn't mentally up for the first for the start of this match, and it felt like Dallas kind of just wanted it more from from the onset where they went for it, and Seattle kind of just wasn't ready for their level of of what they brought to this game

for the first twenty minutes. Yeah, you're right, that's fair assessment, and that that Dallas had their back against the wall, they had to come out strong and talking to coach today, earlier in the day. Uh, he said they're going to come out on the front foot, and that's a that's we have to we have to absorb that, we have to prepare for that. Then we have to take advantage of it and maybe that means we

can counterattack. But Seattle was not ready and Comungo's assist was really nice, but it was it should have been blocked, and it was on the left hand side, our left hand side, and he just kind of cut back in and hit a ball and Paul Areola comes through and hits it to the back post and it's one of those that goes in anywhere in the world because Fry can't commit one way or the other and it's just a little flick in.

And then knew Who gets a yellow card in the tenth minute, and that was just a sign of hey, we're not mentally engaged, like we need to be kicking the ball away. Kicking the ball away, I mean, come on, cannot do that. It's playoffs, right, And then the penalty kick. And we were praising knew Who last week for being one of the best happy yeah, one on one defender. Se just they weren't engaged. I think they looked past. I think it was such a good

win to nothing at home. I think they thought, okay, this will be all right. But again, it's playoffs. We're playing against a home team that's desperate, and you can't you can't just walk out and expect it for it to go your way, even if you're the Seattle Sounder. So you have to earn it every single time. And they want to win too, right, They want to win. They want their season to keep going. They're playing for a lot of reasons, and they had a full house

and and so they're fired up. Now. The good news is we're back in Seattle. If we can come out from the beginning and get the crowd behind us the whole time, the reverse is possible of what we saw tonight well, because the Sounders are facing FC Dallas in that third mauch here in round one of this best of three series. So Game three is win or season over. It's November tenth, Friday, seven pm, Providence, Swedish

Welcome back to the postmatch show Sounders FC falling tonight in FC Dallas a score of three to one that forces a final, decisive game three here

in the first round of the AUDIMLS Cup playoffs. This is coming up Friday. This is this Friday, not next Friday. This Friday. That's what I think, Like, you know, the sense of next Friday. If I'm talking about next Friday, I'd be talking about the Friday after this next one. So if I say this Friday, I'm talking about the next Friday on the calendar, which is this Friday, five days from now Friday.

These are the debates we have at least on KJR. But listen Friday, lumen Field six thirty, Providence, Swedish pre match seven o'clock kickoff tickets go on sale tomorrow SOUNDERSFC dot com slash tickets. Here we go for the Sounders decisive win or season over game against Dallas. Now, the big question, Pete, as we round out the broadcast tonight is what does Brian Schmitzer do

with his lineup? Because he started the same lineup in these back to back matches which is to you know, I mean we can run through it quickly. Fry, Alex knew Who, Jamar Jackson, Josh Attensio, Jul Polo, Jordan Morris at the top, Albert Russnack in the middle, Leo Chew off the left, Christian roll Done off to the right. The one sub potentially that could be made would be Nicholas Ladero. Whether it's for Leo Chu or rest Neck, I don't know. But the question is A what would

you want to do going into Game three? Would you make a change? And b what do you think Brian Schmitzer will do. It's funny, I've had a couple of minutes to think about it now. My first thought is keep the lineup the same. And because we're back at home, and you saying keep the lineup the same, keep the lineup the same, because we're back at home and we're going back to where we had success, and so

let's keep it going. Having said that, Brian Schmetzer has a lot of respect for Nicol Ladero and maybe he says to Nico, hey, I need you to go ninety minutes. You got to put us on your back, be a legend, and yeah, take us take us to the next round. And I could see or I could see Nico coming to him and saying, hey, coach, I'll go ninety minutes and I'll help us win the

game. And I could see Brian making a gut decision and making that change possibly, but I could see him going the other way too and just saying this. And an assistant coach named Jeff Cook, and he always said, dance with the one who brung you right now. We didn't get it done today, but we got it done last week at Seattle. So I could

see him saying, we're going to stay with that. But if they have a heart to heart with Nico, I mean, he's the kind of guy that has enough clout and respect from the coaches that if he says, let me put the team on my back, and maybe they have that conversation on the flight home tonight and Brian says, Okay, you've been our skipper before, price still the skipper. Let's elevate this because they want to What if you give him the captain's arm band back for a while. I don't Yeah,

I don't think you do that. I think that causes too much. You wouldn't want to do that to step Uh. But but I think you know that could be because there's the interplay between Joe Paulo and Nico, and even Albert Rusnik was just so good and and Jordan Morris in the last game. I could see it, and you could say to a young guy like Chew, hey, you're twenty two years old. I think he's had two plays. You're gonna get a bunch of minutes. You're gonna get time,

right. The one dilemma, though, is is that if Chow starts is off, and he starts fast and gets us going, then Nico can close it out with his experience. I don't think the opposite is true. I don't think Chow comes in and closes it out. Good point, guy, this is a chess match. It's such a funny chess match where they pay

Brian, you know this is where you make your money. I mean, like, like honestly, the reality is like no pressure, Brian, But like this is a big moment, you know, do you and clearly Nico's gonna want to start. Do you start the legend who maybe who could be potentially playing his final game in a Sounders Jersey? Do you start him in a legend moment or do you strategically go with a guy who can you know, come out, stretch the field and potentially get your goal down that left

side in Leo Chu. This is the biggest question of the week because I don't think you take off Rusnack. I don't think you take off tense to anybody else. I think it is Leo Chu or Nicholas Ladero. And that is the million dollar Well, I guess nik will make three point two three point two million dollar question. Yeah, which of the two guys is it? Yeah, it is a really good question. And again the good news

is it's five days. So the five days is great to get home, get rested, put this one behind you, start looking toward the next one. Uh. And it's not ten days where you have to wait too long, So it's a it's a good window to recover and get your mind right and get ready to go. So it is going to be an interesting one, though I would be I'd love to be in the room with Precky and uh, Tommy Deutra and and uh Freddy and Andy Rose and Brian and hear

their thoughts and and they it'll be interesting. It'll be interesting if it's even a topic of discussion because it might be too Nope, that we're going to stay with the group that won in Dallas and then we'll bring Nico in because that worked. Yeah, so you know, it's good options to have. You're not talking about, you know, trying to pull a guy out who's coming off an mcl sprain and you hope he can go for one game. Hey, and really quick, great that that Yamar knew Who, after getting

early yellows didn't get second yellows. It's a good call because knew Who kind of had a rough start to this game between kicking the ball away and getting the in the card, and then he kind of got locked in and that was you're right, that's a very good point because he settled down. So yeah, it'll be interesting to see what the next week. But I'm it's funny how this game is because you always get another chance. You'll hope you

always get another chance. But now I'm excited to see a home game back in Seattle. I'll see you. They're on Friday. Yes, you will see you. They're on Friday, Friday, six o'clock pre match, the six thirty pre match, seven o'clock kickoff, Sounders Dallas win or season over.
