Welcome back to schooled in socials. If you're listening to this episode on the day it drops, Merry Christmas. But honestly, I hope you've taken the day to enjoy the holiday with your family, and you're circling back with your energy focused on the new year, because that's exactly what we're going to be tackling today, all of those shiny new business goals you have set or are working on setting for yourself for the new year. And I want you to go into this brand new year with a solid plan for how your social media marketing is going to support those goals.

And in order to do that, the first thing we have to do is make sure that your big business goal that you have in mind is specific enough to help you make an effective social media plan. Pretty much all of us are looking to increase our revenue in one way or another, but just saying that you're going to make maybe x amount more dollars this year isn't going to be specific enough for us to really hone in on the content you want to be creating on social media. So I like to think of increasing revenue as the ultimate goal of business, and then our big business goals help us to get there. Things like growing an email list, increasing traffic to your TPT store, launching a course or membership, increasing your networking and visibility opportunities. Those are the kind of big goals I want you to have in mind as we move forward to create your social media goals that will actually help you move the needle in your business.

Now that you have your big business goal in mind, we need to translate that goal into a social media goal - things we want to see happen on social media that will move us towards that goal. So for example, if you're looking to build your email list this year, what would we want to see happening on your social media account in order to support that? Well, we would want to see people accessing your lead magnets, maybe through your link in bio, maybe through your stories, or commenting on your posts or asking for it in your DMs. So we could create a social media goal around, let's say, increasing the number of people who comment on posts where you promote a lead magnet. Awesome. So now we know we're going to focus on sharing our lead magnets in a way that makes people interested in grabbing them specifically that gets them to comment for the link to get on your list. But we don't want to stop there, because in order to have a strong strategy, we need a few more supporting social media goals that will make the impact of your post about your lead magnets even bigger. So for example, if we want more people on your email list, we should probably be getting your content in front of more people in general, which means we want to see an increase in the number of people who see your content. The more people who see your content, the more likely we can get them to comment on those lead magnet posts. And then beyond that, we would want to be able to have people see a variety of your lead magnets, so we have even more of an opportunity for them to choose one and land on your email list. A great way to do this, get people to follow you so that they're more likely to see your content. Think of these social media goals as a build up. What is the first action I need my audience to take, or the first thing I need to happen in order to stack the deck in my favor when it comes to the social media goal that directly correlates with your big business goal? So in this case, getting more comments on those lead magnet posts, then what would be the next action or thing we would want to see increase, etc, etc? Having that one main goal and two to three supporting goals will help you hone in on if you're making progress and how you can make even more progress towards your goal. Now, you know, we can't just say, Okay, I want to increase the amount of people who comment on my lead magnet posts, and not make a plan to get that to happen. And to make that plan, we need to look at your data.

So the final step here is identifying the KPIs, those data points you want to be keeping your eye on to make sure you're making progress towards your main goal. In our email example, the KPI would be comments specifically on those posts about lead magnets as well as reach because that shows us how many people are seeing our content, and follows because that shows us what content is bringing people into our community so that they can be further exposed to those free offers. When starting out with your new goals, you're going to head into your dashboard and find out which content has performed best for each of those data points. So which content has gotten the most comments in the past? Which content has gotten the highest reach, which content has brought in the most followers? Then you look for trends in that content, like the type of media you use, the topics you covered, etc, and from there, you create more content like that to get those KPIs to increase. Then, as you work towards your goal, you check in on your KPIs every now and then to make sure you're moving in the right direction, to see what has been working so that you again can create more content like that and get better results.

So when it comes to using your social media data to support your business goals this New Year, think of it like a hierarchy. You have to start with your overall big business goal. Then you need to identify a few social media goals that will help you get there, and then you identify the KPIs you need to track to prove you're making progress. Doing this helps you hone in on the content you should be creating, eliminating that decision fatigue and making you feel more confident about your social media strategy. Now, if you want to learn more about how you can get your social media data to support your goals, this is something I explicitly cover in my course post and profit. I'll leave the link to it in the show notes, in case you're curious and want to take a peek.
