彼のロングスローは、学生時代に槍投げのチャンピオンに輝いたことがあるという経歴にも起因しており、そのスローの犠牲者となったアーセナルのアーセン・ヴェンゲル監督が、スローインの不公平を主張して、スローインを廃止してキックインを採用することを提唱しました。

速く直線的なボールを確実にゴール前に送り込むデラップのスローは対戦相手にとって大きな脅威となり、直接的・間接的を含めて多くのゴールがその形から生み出された。
