Derek expresses the challenges in getting hired as a first responder and what it took. While in the profession of being a police officer he brought many studies to his department of the benefits of jiu jitsu, how injuries had gone down, mental well being has risen. With that, his department was not in support. Derek has now left the field and transitioned to establishing his own appeal company called Detached Appeal. Because through his transition of being a police officer to now a civilian he had to detach from his old identity, his old beliefs that were not serving him in his life.
