Episode description

Writing a book is a journey.

…and because of my guest Amanda Johnson I have now written 4 that have been released with the 5th one currently on the table. Today we are talking all about the book publishing industry, the journey that is writing a book and the healing that comes through the telling of your story.

Amanda had been writing all through highschool and college, helping others write better papers and editing their writing for publishing. Forever the editor of other people’s stories but never one of her own.

With a little one at home, and a marriage that was falling apart Amanda got her chance to work with her mentor. It was on this part of her writing journey that she came to realize the value she had to offer to the world and her story that was ready to be told.

Are you being called to write your story? There is no time like now to get started and this episode is your inspirational jumping off point.

Join me and Amanda Johnson to learn why you shouldn’t ignore the call and just how possible it is to tell your story to the world.

interesting conversations about business and book publishing. So go back and listen to those shows as well. One of the one or two of them and double your sales now. That is what it used to be called. And then which is still in this quantum revenue expansion lineup. Like you'll find them there. And then also I interviewed Amanda last year, so you definitely want to hear about her journey, because she helps aspiring and seasoned change agents. Right through her individual and collective

stories. She partners with divinely inspired souls to craft messages for maximum impact on their audience brand and bottom line and heal their stories so they can change the world without compromising their health, their sanity, or their

soul. After years of engaging, clarifying and helping others develop powerful messages as a student teacher and master writing coach, Amanda has uncovered her own as well, in addition, she just wrote this great book with a hand like a bunch, not including me, a bunch of other authors called, you can't make this story up, which we're gonna be talking about today. Because you really can't like the stuff that has happened

in our lives. I feel like you can't make this up. And really, when the mess becomes the message, right, like great things can happen. So let's, let's just jump in. I mean, maybe people need to know how we met or kind of our story and your story, you take away and then we'll, we'll see what unfolds. Yeah, that's a great place to start. Because I mean, I originally reached out to you to be in the book, or to write the foreword, I was like, I can't do this book without your story in it,

because you're the first real client that I had. I mean, I was always helping people through high school and college and all my degrees to help people, you know, write better papers and get things done. And I was editing for people. And then there was this moment in time, where I was really kind of at my lowest. And I had a little boy at home, my marriage was falling apart. And I had this opportunity to work with a mentor, and work with her an online writing instruction

company. And it was amazing. And I was doing all this work with her. And then we went out, this is a great business lesson. We went out to shop her business, and she ended up going to NABO. And met a bunch of you. And her business was all about helping people to write well, like learn how to write well. And, and all of you people were like, um, I do not want to learn how to write well, I want someone to fix all of this content that I'm

trying to get out into the world. And so for a while, while she was trying to figure out what she was gonna do with the company, and where she was going to go, I became the primary editor in the company. And so that's why when you had sewing with intention, kind of in its final moments of production, and I know she had edited that for you, but then it was like the workbook, I need a workbook, and I need it in two weeks. I don't remember that, by the way, but I believe you.

This is this is when Ursula talks about collapsing time. She was not joking. I watched her do this for 15 years. It's ridiculous. Two weeks, and I was like, I have my teaching credential. And this lady is talking about tapping back into potential, which is what I have lost. And so here I was, like, I know I have more potential than this. I'm at my deepest, darkest moment here. I have this little kid that I don't want to turn out like this, what am I going to do? And then Ursula shows up.

And she's like, Hey, I have a book about intention and potential. And I was like, Sign me up. So yeah, we did that in two weeks. And I went to lunch, and I met other people who eventually became editing clients. And yeah, I mean, and then I think after selling with intention, one great goal was already pushing out you. Mm hmm. So then it was, you know, deep dive into editing for that. And I had the opportunity to work to be in your, what was it like a coaching program for one great

goals, like a trial, like a pilot something. And that's when my message came through? was during that time, because I was like, Well, I have a goal, I just want to, like, feel like I can survive. And, you know, like, that's really where I was at. I'm not, I'm not exaggerating at all, it was a horrible, horrible phase. And so we get into the one great goal

class, and we're working through it. And I'm like, what these goals are these my goals, I don't know whose goals these are my parents goals, my teachers goals, like, and then I had this moment with my mentor. And she asked me, what value do you have to give to the world today? And I was like, I have no clue. I just did not, I could not reach for it. But in 20 minutes, after a lot of tears, I realized, Oh, that's my message. It was the

the way that I was raising Aaron was extremely important. And I was starting to see the results. I was changing the way that I was messaging him because I was clear enough that I could see all of the words and messages that had kind of messed me up, well, really well intentioned, really well intentioned things that parents and teachers said to me that just kind of got me twisted up in knots. And so I was unraveling that and redoing it with him and getting amazing results. So that's when my

message came through. And then one great goal was, gee, Ursula, I had this idea on my way home. What if I partnered with a teacher from the secret and she was like, I'm sorry, what I mean, of course, but Where'd that come from? Right. And yeah, the rest is history. It'll happen. Oh my gosh, like so many things that I forgotten first of all, necessity is the mother of invention. I remember now why I had to get the workbook done so

quickly. It's because Tim and I owed sickness six mortgages we had to pay in one month and I had to get that class off the ground so that that First selling with intention intensive off the ground. Oh my gosh, yeah, um, one great goal, you know, I just want to kind of throw in for our listeners, you know, to me books are really divine downloads, and they come through us as messages, right. That's what Amanda is talking

about. And we all have our, you know, our pain stories as Amanda's sharing her as we all have the stuff that we've gone through. And I'll tell you like, my pain stories, like my life stories are still coming out in the books. Like, it's still like, the last book that I wrote up level now, which is not in the world, yet. It's sitting, right, it's, I could see it sitting right over there. It's waiting, I definitely share the

most personally and the most. You know, kind of the hardest stuff and stuff that Amanda you didn't even know, and I've known you for years. And so just just so much compassion for everyone who's listening or watching, you know, that we all have messy stuff in our lives. And if you feel like you're called to write a book you are like it's trying to come through you are so follow that guidance. And you know, find people who can

support you. Like one thing I think is great about like you, you know, one thing that man and I are modeling today is this, the support of other entrepreneurs, the support of other mentors and experts. I mean, we're friends today. But I remember when we met, when you said that novel meeting, a bunch of you, a bunch of you, people I didn't know, like, you know, I was, yeah, a bunch of those. And then which you became then right, and entrepreneur as well. Being an entrepreneur is a

lonely journey, like, let's face it, it's a lonely journey. And it's, it can feel like the biggest self development course you'll ever take. And then if you write a book, then you got to write about all your stuff, right? Your storytelling, and all that stuff that's come through being an entrepreneur. And yet, it's also one of the most important healing Journeys you can take. And I have found so much healing, through my business through helping people through helping our clients and

through through writing. And so, I mean, let's, um, we mentioned, you know, you can't make this story up, tell us about the new project that you're working on with, with clients. I'm part of that I'm excited to be part of it. Why did you decide to write this book? Like, why did that book want to come through at this time in the world? Yeah. Well, it actually started about two years ago, almost exactly. And I don't know, you know, how sometimes just, it's

the magic, right? Like, sometimes just a bunch of things planned at one time, and all kind of alchemize into this idea. And I was getting a lot of feedback from my clients that was like, wow, you know, if I hadn't been through this program, I wouldn't have blah, blah, blah. And it had nothing

to do with getting the book done. Once, you know, business, like it was about transformation and healing that was happening for people because they had reengaged their story, and learned how to co author their lives instead of just kind of being in it as the character. And so I just thought, you know, there are enough people that I think we should tell the story, because at the same time, I was hearing from a bunch of creatives who were like, you know, I have this great idea.

And it was so wonderful, and, and I'm stuck. And there's something wrong with me. And I've signed up for all of these programs, and spent 10s and hundreds of 1000s of dollars to try to get people to help me. And I don't understand what it is oh, and then I paid more money to figure out why I was

sabotaging myself. And I still can't get this book done. And, you know, 10 or 15 years of this taught me one thing that this is about way more than building a business writing a book, it's really the soul's call, I believe, to get clear on the things that still aren't working. You know, we think we say we want to write a book because we've overcome this, and we want to share how we did it. And that's friggin amazing, share that. And also, there's usually an area of our lives or

something that is still kind of janky. And the process of writing will show us not just where that is because it usually jumps up and slaps us in the face. As soon as we start

writing, let's be honest, I call them story collisions. But it also if we can actually get into the process and get past the the stress and the stuckness and just write those shitty rough drafts, you know, then we can really begin to see where we keep losing our power, where we keep the story loops going, where we have agency where we could pick up the pen and write a new script or write in a new behavior and the play that we're living here so you know, it's been it was an amazing moment

where I was like, you know, I think we just need to have all these people tell their stories so other people don't feel so darn crazy all the time because There's so much like what's wrong with me? Right? You hear it all the time. What's wrong with me? Why can't I do this? It turns into self shaming, self. flagellation is awful. And so there was that piece. But then there was also a crescendo, let's say, of me realizing that I had never told my parts of the stories. And that was extremely

important to me. Because, you know, oh, Amanda, thank you helped me to heal this. Oh, Amanda, thank you helped me to do this. And, and it's like, well, that's awesome. But these people don't know what they catalyzed. For me. Every message came into my life, like I shared at the beginning with yours,

right? Like, I'm totally divorced from potential and this woman with this business name, potential quest jumps in starts talking about intention, like, no coincidence, you know, I get a one of the first editing projects I had was about, it was a resource for caregivers. Well, I was living with my grandmother at the time. And she right after we finished the book, she ended up falling and needing a lot of support. And suddenly, I was a

caregiver. And I already had a resource guide. Like, I already knew what was coming, I already knew what needed to be addressed. And so there are all of these moments. I mean, people who've had really terrible relationship issues, man, as soon as they enter my world, I'm like, at another level of

healing my own relationship stuff. So I wanted people to be able to see that dynamic first for the creative so that they could see, you know, like, Okay, I'm not, I'm not the only one here, like you said, it's a lonely journey, you're not on it by yourself. And maybe if you stop shaming yourself so hard, you could get into the process, you know, someone will give you permission to say, this is actually perfect. There's nothing wrong with this right now. You just got to keep going.

That would be amazing. And also for all of the coaches out there. How many coaches do you know walk away? Because it's just too hard. The clients are just too tricky. It's just too, like. And I wonder to myself, how much of that is because this is the thing that's happening under the surface, the clients are pushing at our own stories. Yeah. And we don't know it. And so we don't lean in. We call them crazy clients. So we, we back out of contracts, we and then you know, it's all just all

too hard. And so we stopped for a while and we don't push forward. And so, for me, that's what I wanted this book to be was an opportunity for both creatives and coaches, to see the messy magic that can happen when we're open to it. Yeah. So God, I know the end for everyone's wondering, yes, Amanda's gonna tell us how we can get the book with some other

cool things along with it. So let's talk about I mean, I, one ways we could go with this, and we've had you on the show, and you've talked about your own business growth, so people can go back and listen to that. But I'd love to talk about just the, like, kind of the myths and the truths about what it really means to write a book and how that could impact your business.

Because I think there's a lot of beliefs out there. So what what would you like to share with our audience about about that, like, what's, what are the myths about writing a book? And what are some of the truths? Oh, man? Well, I think one of the first things that people have to realize is that when you get inspired to write, it's usually the only part that you see is the writing. Like, it

just needs to get the manuscript done. But then, because you don't know what it's like to write or publish a book, you end up, like I have so many people who just don't finish the manuscript. And when I really dig in and ask why it's like, well, I don't know what comes next. So unconsciously, they're keeping themselves from finishing because they don't know how to self publish, or how to reach out to a publisher what's involved, because that was never what the point was.

Right? It was just to write and get what they needed out of it, and then hopefully get it to someone else. But I'm sure they're like millions of manuscripts and drawers that just are almost there. I could change the world, if they would just finish it because they knew how to move that forward. So there's that piece. There's another funny thing that's out there, like, you know, million dollar authors, and you like, Oh, are you sure you want to get me started on this? It's hard.

So there's all these and you know, I'm the million dollar author thing really gets me because it's like really who's gonna make millions of dollars on a book. When you look when you understand how publishing works, and you understand that you're going to charge $15 or 20. Let's go big $25 per book, and it takes $5 to print and then you got to pay for shipping. You got to pay for production. You got like all of these other things you end up with. You're lucky if it's like

a $10 royalty per book, right? Lucky. So how many books do you have to sell? I'm no good at math. You know that you see me on spreadsheets? I'm all the words, how many books you have to sell in order to become a million dollar author? That's bogus. I hate the way that that's positioned. Yeah, it's so you know, oh, I want to do that. But then people get into those into these programs and, and webinars where it's like, oh, shoot, I have to grow whole business, I was just trying to

write a book. Right. And they don't tell you that, you know, the first six figures can be really, really tricky. It's a lot of work. And so, you know, but, and then in order to do you know, maybe go seven, you have to do all of these other things, you have to hire a team, you have to, you know, Train the Trainer program start popping up, and all of these different things where it's like, people are, their minds are blown, because they just want to write a book, and help people.

So yeah, I want to tie to that. So why write a book? Like why? Why should someone then like, it's a lot of work? We know that? Um, what? What's at the end of the road for someone, after they write it? Well, I think you're the perfect person to answer that question was the end of the road, you have five bucks? Why would you do that to yourself? It's not easy. And I watched you, you know, eat lots of chocolate chip cookies and

drink. Yeah, and have lots of little screaming emails about editing processes. The worst? I mean, I'd love to I mean, I'll, I think we can talk about this for a minute. I think you know that, at least for me. It was more painful to not write the book, because I knew it was going to help somebody. And I felt like, I felt like the message was meant

to come through me. And I think, I think too, like, this is important to talk about, because I did the same contrast and compare thing that everybody else does, like, I'll go out and be like, well, because I have another book that wants to be written right now. It's been sitting in my mind, it's on my list here. And it keeps coming up in a million different ways. People are like, I want you to write x book, like, literally people have said to me, you need to write this book on this thing

that I say. And so it's become, it's again, becoming more painful to not write the book, because I know, here's the other thing, not only is it going to be great for, for whoever gets to read it, it's going to be helpful, it's going to solve some problem, it's gonna be really good for me. And so there's so much transformation and healing that comes through

writing the book myself, and, and getting it out there. And just some of the, the ideas of the processes and the things that are gonna come through to help people it's gonna help me as well. So so it's like, again, I think it's just more painful to not write the book. Now, I but I also want to say, I met you and I met the right people at the right time, like synchronicity definitely happen to say where, like you showed up, you've always said, you've always believed in my books more

than I have. And I and that's really important to find people who could be in your corner and say, Yeah, this is a great book to put out there. And, and to not get stuck in the trap of like, oh my gosh, but so and so wrote this book, like or so and so wrote this book, that is none of your business. That's not your book, that's none of your business. You've got to let your book come through, because that book is meant to help certain

people in the world. So I think that's my, you know, again, more painful to not write it then like to just let it come through. I guess I feel like right now the ideas are coming down. It's like, I got this whole sheet like looking at me. Yeah, well, and I think the other thing, too, that I've seen for you is that it always propels and catalyzes the next

thing for you. So there's something about like when you're hanging on to like the sewing with intention class or the you know, and you're like, I have to do this, because this is the only way that this is getting to the world is me doing this, but when you put it in a book, then it cracks open the next thing that wants to come through you, but we hang on to these things. I was just looking at it yesterday, I'm in calendar, hell, because I was reading. And I was like, there's so much that

I could do. Right? So many programs that I've offered over the years, and I love them all. But what are the things that are needed now? And and so, you know, the next audience is calling view and it has always been calling you look at the audience, the audience of clients, and listeners that you have now are dramatically different than when I met you 15 years ago. Right? I mean, from from income, to personality, to

right, like all of those things. There's completely different and I think part of that is because every book has allowed you to it's like a stepping stone to your next your next level of business. Your next book of clients. And I think that's all a result of healing. You know how many, one of my, my favorite and least favorite parts of what I do is like, well, this awesome is this, this framework is amazing. But there's this one

thing that I feel like is missing right here. You know, and it's like the most natural thing in the world, to the author. And so they don't include it. But it is the magic, because is the thing that is the most natural to the author that they have used to propel their journey forward. It's the unseen thing because they don't put value on it, because it's so easy. But for everyone else, they got to know what that is. And they got to know how to how to embody that themselves in

order to get the same types of results. So with every one of your books, you I've watched you wrestle like, well, this is the way I've done it before. But actually, I think if I, you know, what, there was this one other thing that I did, that isn't even in this framework, and so it's made you even better and even more articulate with how you're really doing things.

And I think, you know, the belief zone was like, getting the, the real juice behind how you've been doing business, you know, it was like, You had all the sales books, then we got the belief zone, and it was like, Oh, this is what's really happening. This is the, the underbelly of, of what's making this go at the level that it goes. So and then, you know, this next book up level now is just another, it's another level of integration. And it's not about just business anymore.

It's about the personal and, you know, I've watched you, I've watched you wrestle with all those things over time, to the point where, like, now it's ready for a book and then who knows what's gonna come next?

I kind of know, but to your point, I just want to say this, like, I think you're so so accurate in that, you know, by for those of us who write a book, or who have them stashed somewhere and need to bring them out again, there's so there's so much clarification that comes not only through the book, but also your right like through the business and what I'm doing with my clients, because we can't, we can't see our own stuff. We

can't like even what we're good at, we can't. But I think so many years, because for those of you who've known me and been on this journey with me, like I'm not a different person, what's different is because of all the healing and peeling, I've done, I'm a lot more confident. And confidence if we go back to selling with intention, confidence is what sells right

just like you, Amanda, all the healing and healing. You've done all the mentors, you've worked with all of the 1000s and 1000s of dollars that you've spent to learn about, you know, writing being an author being just a successful human being exact in your words, peeling, you know, all of that has increased your competence. Like, I would love to be so crazy to see, like if we can put the two of us circa 2004. Up here right now, like, we are not the same people. And it's because we've been

committed to a transformational journey. I mean, to me, writing is really about being in transformation, and being committed to that journey, being committed to being better, being better humans working on ourselves, so that we can help more people. Yeah, I just had a client yesterday, tell me, you know, I felt like a completely different person. And I was like, isn't it interesting that you can feel both ways at the same time, I feel like a completely different person, but more like myself

than I've ever felt. And that's what that is, right? Like, we come into this world. And, you know, most of us are pretty, not damaged when we get here, let's say right, like, right, we come in with like, gifts and talents and super powers and some sort of divine code, and then all the stuff happens, messages get put on us, traumas happen, we create stories about those traumas, and it just keeps creating layer after layer after layer that keeps the real us from being actually interacting with the

world. And feeling like we can be ourselves so yeah, with every, you know, like, I love it when I'm writing. And I'm just like, I don't know if I think that's true. Like did I really like I'm working on this fun little 10 reasons to run away from being a messenger right now. Like, probably great for my business right but like 10 reasons to not do this. These are really good to not do this. Um, and and part of that is this piece of like, it's not easy, but to your point, you know,

what else are you going to do? That's that's what we always get to right and the quitting conversations like what's my How're we each other's quitting coaches? What does that mean? Oh, well, I don't know how many times I think the frequency has has lessened over the years, it has. Maybe once or twice a year, now one of us will get a text from the other. That's like, Okay, that's it. I'm done. Like, this is all too hard. I don't

know what the heck, I was thinking this is ridiculous. I have these things coming up in my business right now or my personal world. And it's just all too hard. Like, I'm done. Yeah. And the other one says, awesome, that's perfect. What else are you gonna do? I just want to add, like we all somehow, we always end up starting a coffee, like a cafe, like a coffee house somewhere.

But then there's a conference room and we end up going back in the conference room, and we start training again, all that to say, we never get to quit, it's like this full. It's just a full circle. So we've tried to quit and it hasn't worked out, which is actually probably a good thing. And speaking of that, we're almost out of time. So I want to what I want to close with just before we talk about the book and how to get it

and the other things that you do. What's your final advice for our listeners, like, we're, we're in this really, we're still in the pandemic, whatever's happening. We're in a weird time in the world. You know, we're two years into that, as we record this, many of us are having, you know, great years in business, like if we're still around, mourn, probably not surviving, we're probably thriving. And maybe there's some who are listening who aren't quite yet and want that, but

what's, what's your best piece of advice for? For listeners, as we close out? Start writing. Yes, yeah, with no agenda, really, like I mean, if you know, you're

supposed to write a book, then just start writing. And, you know, if you're feeling stuck, or you're feeling excited, the writing is so going to expose something to you, that will take you to the next level, whether that's unstuck or, you know, yeah, next level, like something incredible, being able to show itself because we tell ourselves the most amazing things when we

put pen to paper. And if we're willing to look at all of the most amazing stuff with some of that hard stuff that comes along with it, then sky's the limit. Sky's the limit. And you can't make this story up. The book launch tell us about like, if someone wants to work with you, what do you have for us today? Well, if you go to Trudeau intention, comm you will see all the things. The book I'm really excited about, it's gonna launch on my birthday, January 21 2022, fortuitous numbers, I believe.

Yeah. Um, and so what we have done is we have 19, authors, and then myself, and all of us came together to not just write this amazing book that will make you laugh, cry, and maybe cringe a little. But, you know, we wanted it to be more than the book, we want the book to inspire people, we want the book to support and make people feel like they're not crazy for feeling the way that they are inside of the creative or coaching process.

But we also wanted to give them tools because Alo, it's a community full of brilliant people with tools and skills and messages. And so what we did was we combined, we're calling them the creative cocoon kits. And there are four different levels of offering. So the first level is a bunch of digital content that people can get that will help them to move forward. These are classes or PDF reports, or excerpts from books, or even children's books that they can read to their kids like,

amazing, amazing content. And then at the next level, if they want to purchase even more books, they get the opportunity to join us for live classes. So we have people who do yoga and tapping and like all of these awesome things will actually help creatives move through the process and move some energy and get unstuck. And then we're doing you like this, or doing these creative clusters. Because, you know, clusters of people, but also sometimes it feels like a cluster, right?

Like, literally and so we're gonna have conversations with people and kind of put them on the on the hot seat, like give them the opportunity to ask whatever questions they want about books about business, about brandy and about all the things that we collectively have to offer. And so it'll be fun. And then there's of course, huge discounts in the big grand prize baskets for like, huge discounts on my program and a bunch of other coaching programs again, like when people get into this

process. Usually at least one thing pops up a relationship issue, a financial thing, a health thing, like the stories are all tied together. And so collectively, we touch all of those arenas for people. And so no matter what they're going through, they're going to be able to find support.

Someone said about that. Yeah. So the best place to the best place is just to go to true intention calm is there any specific thing you want to point them to or anything else, it should be on the on the home site, you'll see you can't make this story up, you can put your name and email address in and you'll get the introduction in your inbox, so you can kind of get a little taste. And also, we've watched sips of story and sanity podcasts, and that sips of story insanity, like

Insanity, you know. So that's launched. And so we're interviewing all of the collaborators right now. And those are hope areas, laugh, cry, cringe. I mean, I just love hanging out with these people, and them telling like their real stories behind the stories. It's incredible. So awesome. Well, thanks for being here. And our listeners go to true to intention comm check out all this. There's so much stuff like you have so much content you have so much that

you give away. And also to get a copy of that at Nelson. Yeah, yeah, you can't make this story up. Is just like for my Can I pre order? Or what when do I wait until to your birthday, there's no pre order, what you'll do is you'll go to the website, and you'll see the sales page, there's a video and then you just kind of decide what level you want to play at how many books do you want and what kind of content or support do you want as in return. And then you make that commitment.

And then the day of, you'll get a reminder to go and purchase the number of books that you agreed to. And then in order to get all the content, we'll get receipts and stuff for anything. Thank you so much for being here. Again, quantum revenue expansion. Thank you. We always have so much fun, we could talk forever and our listeners all over the world. Thanks for hanging out with us. And I hope you enjoyed our just us talking today about what it really takes to write a book and what that

journey is like and also why it's so important. So if you feel the call, definitely go to Trudeau intention comm learn more there. And in the meantime, I just want to wish you an incredible rest of 2021 Make this your most epic month yet. Bye for now.
