When to use "tell" and "say"

Did you notice that we only have one translation for these two verbs? That is to say, both "say and tell" are translated as "decir" (one verb in Spanish, two in English). This is also the case in French, Italian and Portuguese. Again, all of the languages that come from Latin (so, we are not alone…) And you may be wondering, so what? Where is the problem? They both mean "decir" and that's it! Well, not really, you have to be very careful when to use one or the other, and how to use them!

Es decir, tanto say como tell se traducirán como "decir": dos verbos en inglés para uno en español. Y este es el caso también del francés, italiano y portugués. Todos ellos idiomas provenientes del latín (es decir, que no estamos solos...) Y puede que estés pensando, ¿y cuál es el problema? Ambos significan "decir" y ya está.
