Old St. Pat's Podcast

Old St. Patrick's Church, Father Bryan Massingale, Fr. Bryan Massingaleold-st-pats-podcast.simplecast.com
Old St. Patrick's is a Roman Catholic community in Chicago's bustling West Loop neighborhood, founded by Irish Immigrants on Easter morning in 1846. Since then we have grown into a home to a membership of about 4,000 households and innumerable friends. As we grow, we continually redefine what it means to be an urban church. We are committed to remaining open to new visions and possibilities, seeking broader horizons as we journey into our future. We encourage you to encounter the God who loves you, engage in a community that welcomes you, and serve the world that needs you. This podcast aims to welcome all into a Catholic experience like no other. Welcome to the Old St. Pat's Podcast.

Letting God Shine Through Your Life - Fr. Tom Hurley 8.17.25

The world doesn’t revolve around us — a truth that cuts straight through our selfie-obsessed culture. The saints knew this well. St. Bernadette, reflecting on her encounters with the Blessed Virgin at Lourdes, once said: “ The Blessed Virgin used me like a broom. What do you do with a broom when you have finished sweeping? You put it back in its place, behind the door .” She understood herself simply as an instrument of God’s work — nothing more, nothing less. Her example reminds us that humilit...

From Dolton to a Divine Calling - Fr. Jack Wall 8.10.25

As we soak in these hot summer days in Chicago, have you ever thought — Pope Leo grew up in this! He knows what it’s like to walk sun-baked city streets and sit on a front stoop on a hot August evening. Today, Father Wall shares how he, too, grew up in Dolton, Illinois, and recently revisited his old neighborhood to see Pope Leo’s childhood home. He reflects on how a boy from such humble beginnings was called by God into a role that could have seemed overwhelming for any young Chicago kid — yet ...

Rich in the Things God Loves - Fr. Pat McGrath 8.3.25

Have you ever found yourself clinging to a title, a job, a situation, a lifestyle—or even an identity—that deep down isn’t giving you life? Maybe it feels empty, like you’re wearing a mask just to keep up a charade. Or you find yourself constantly busy with activities that drain you, not fill you, all in an effort to maintain an image or a certain status. God invites us to confront the illusions we so often chase—wealth, security, status, success—and instead ask ourselves: What really matters? A...

Prayer That Transforms - Fr. Jack Wall 7.27.25

Have you ever tried to pray and wondered if you’re doing it right? You're not alone—and the good news is, you don’t need to have it all figured out. Prayer isn’t about perfection. Jesus gave us the Our Father as a simple, tender way to speak to God—like a loving parent who sees you as absolutely perfect, just as you are. And if that’s true—if God really sees us with that kind of unconditional love—how would it change the way we treat others? The ones who annoy us. Our enemies. The outsider, the ...

Sacred Encounters, Simple Moments - Fr. Pat McGrath 7.20.25

Have you ever stopped to think—when was the last time you truly encountered someone in need? We may say we support the poor, or care about those who are struggling… but support from a distance is different than standing face to face. As Dale Carnegie once said, "The sweetest sound to someone’s ears is the sound of their own name." It’s a reminder that at the heart of every person—regardless of what they have or don’t have—is the desire to be seen. In today’s episode, we explore the sacred act of...

The Sitcom of the Soul - Fr. Joe Simmons 7.13.25

Have you ever felt like you’re living inside a sitcom? You know—those moments where you’re faced with a decision and you know the right thing to do… and yet somehow, you still don’t do it? Maybe you delay, make excuses, dodge the situation entirely, and then things spiral into full-on Seinfeld-style chaos? Maybe it’s that idea you had to help a neighbor or a cause, but you never followed through. Maybe you meant to check in on a friend, volunteer, speak up, give a little more—but you didn’t. Why...

Walking Without a Map: Trusting God in the Unknown - Fr. Pat McGrath 7.6.25

Do you ever feel the need to be in control? Maybe you like to have a plan—or three—before stepping into the unknown. Whether it’s a job interview, a first date, or a financial investment we all crave certainty. We want the outcome before we even take the risk. But life—and faith—doesn’t work that way. In today’s episode, we explore the tension between our desire for control and God’s invitation to trust. Sometimes, we’re called to step forward without a map, to move even when the path is unclear...

A Church That Heals - Fr. Pat McGrath 6.8.25

Have you ever longed for a place where your soul feels at home — where faith isn’t just practiced, but lived with joy, purpose, and healing? That’s the vision we’re stepping into here at Old St. Pat’s. Rooted in the love of the Holy Spirit — we are embracing a renewed mission. To be a church that welcomes and a church that heals. A field hospital, as Pope Francis reminds us — out in the world, tending to one another with compassion and courage. Old St. Pat’s has always been a place where people ...

Before We Breathed - Fr. Jack Wall 6.1.25

Have you ever wondered what it really means to be one with someone, to be connected in a way that shapes who you are? Before we ever spoke a word or took a breath, we knew communion. We just didn’t know we knew it. We sat there in the womb — totally in communion with our moms — totally one, totally dependent. Our whole biological reality took shape through that oneness, that quiet, unseen nurture. That’s communion. And the mystery is — that kind of communion never stopped. God is still forming u...

Threshold Moments - Fr. Jack Wall 5.18.25

It’s that time of year when caterpillars complete their quiet transformation and emerge as something new - butterflies, ready to spread their wings and fly. We have moments like that, too. Times when life reaches out and invites us to become something new—to lead, to serve, to show up in ways we never have before. These are threshold moments. Turning points that call us to step forward with courage and faith. Just like when Bob Prevost stepped through the doors of St. Peter’s and emerged no long...

A Story of Mercy & Second Chances - Fr. Pat McGrath 5.4.25

Have you ever felt like you messed up so badly that there was no coming back? Like you disappointed someone—or even God—so deeply that forgiveness felt impossible? This past Sunday, we heard the story of one of the most powerful moments of mercy: when the risen Jesus meets Peter, the same Peter who denied even knowing him, and offers not punishment but restoration. Three times Peter said, “I don’t know him.” And three times, Jesus asks, “Do you love me?” Not to shame him, but to heal him. In tod...

Liberating Mercy - Fr. Pat McGrath 4.27.25

Today, we’re talking about fear—the kind of fear that doesn’t just make us nervous, but locks us up. Fear can freeze us in place, tangle us up in knots, paralyze us, and make us feel like we’re letting ourselves and others down. It’s easy to get stuck, to feel stagnant and shut away from the life we’re meant to live. And often, we put pressure on ourselves to work up the courage or force ourselves to move forward, thinking it’s all on us. But here’s the truth: we don’t have to carry that burden ...
